Reproductive Health Periodicals collection, 1989-2009

This collection includes a number of periodicals produced by different organizations interested in enabling and protecting a women's right to reproductive healthcare. The organizations are: the Mayo Clinic, the American Civil Liberties Union's Reproductive Freedom Project, the Center for Reproductive Rights, and HealthyWomen. Accession (2009-0236) (300 items; 0.6 lin. ft.; dated 1989-2009) includes the following publications: Mayo Clinic Women's Health Resource (Mayo Clinic); Reproductive Freedom News (Center for Reproductive Law and Policy, now known as the Center for Reproductive Rights); Reproductive Rights Update (Reproductive Freedom Project); and the National Women's Health Report (National Women's Health Resource Center). Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Yehudit Shadur (1928-2011) pioneered the contemporary revival of the Jewish papercutting tradition. Collection comprises a papercut by Yehudit Shadur, entitled "Mizrach" (east wall marker), from the original in the Jewish National Museum and Archives, Israel. Cut blue paper; mounted on brown paper. 15.25 x 18.75 inches.

Thomas Smith was a resident of the burrough of Norfolk, Va. Deed of manumission of "negro Sue," more commonly known as Susannah Mallory, former property of Charles King Mallory, of Elizabeth City County, [Va.?], by Thomas Smith in the Court of Norfolk County, Va., on 1803 July 19. In the document Smith makes it clear that the sixty dollars he paid for her purchase from Charles King Mallory was advanced entirely by Sue and that he acted only as her "Friendly agent" in the matter, with no interest in holding her as a slave. The deed is witnessed by Richard Henry Lee and R. C. Archer.

Collection comprises correspondence, legal papers, business records, bills and receipts, photographs, writings, recipes, clippings, and other items relating to the life and career of businessman M.C. (Marshall Clayton) Stoner, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and three generations of the Brewer and Stoner families from Pennsylvania and Maryland. Includes many speeches by George W. Brewer, a lawyer and senator in the Pennsylvania legislature, 1857-1859, and M.C. Stoner's father-in-law. Much of the correspondence and other items relate to coal mining and specifically to M.C. Stoner's Rocky Ridge Mining Company. There are also letters written to Stoner's daughter, Louise, chiefly from male friends.

M. Almina Stratton was a student in the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia. She received her M.D. in the second class the college graduated in 1859. Collection comprises manuscript notes (61 pages) maintained by M. Almina Stratton for her class in Materia Medica, entitled "Lectures on Materia Medica By Prof. Roerig, delivered in the Female Medical College In the session of 1858-9." Contains an additional 8 pages of her rules and advice for young ladies regarding gentlemen callers, proper behavior, and letter writing.

Tijuana Bibles, also known as eight-pagers or dirty little books, were small eight-page publications of cartoon erotica and pornography that became popular during the 1930s and 1940s. This collection includes about 400 Tijuana Bibles, some of them duplicates; a few folders of erotica drawings and drafts by an unknown artist; and printed material about Tijuana Bibles, published from the 1970s through the 1990s.

Roundell Tristram Toke (1896-1957) was a British Army officer from Folkestone, England who was stationed in China during the Boxer Rebellion, and in Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. Collection comprises diaries and photographs documenting in detail his military service in China and Japan during the Boxer Rebellion, 1900, and Russo-Japanese War, 1905 to 1907. The first diary is set in China; the other three in Japan. All four contain daily descriptions of weather, social and administrative activities, military engagements, rations, medical training, diplomacy, and other details, with some sketches of formations and drill patterns. The diaries are accompanied by 146 photographs from China and Japan. The earlier group shows officers and soldiers from the eight allied nations, ruins and battle sites, and other scenes in Tianjin and Beijing following the Boxer Rebellion, 1900; later images show civilians and street life; military camps; drills; equipment; engagements; Russian war prisoners and their camps; towns; landscapes; harbors; and a few social gatherings. The collection also includes Toke's leather cigar case, inscribed on the inside with his postings with dates, beginning with Weihai, China, 1900.
