Entries describe the social life and travel of a British woman living in India with General Craigie, his wife, and daughters. They left England in November 1854, traveled by ship with stops in Egypt, and arrived in Madras in January 1855. The group lived in Madras but journeyed to other cities in southern India, including Bangalore, Mysore, and Vellore. There are references to the Sepoy Rebellion, 1856-1858, before Wilson departed India in 1860.

Accession (2009-0196) (1000 items; 2.0 lin. ft.; dated 1919-1984) consists of pamphlets, newsletters, newspapers, brochures, and other publications and periodicals from a variety of pro-libertarian and right wing organizations, including the American Economic Foundation and the National Economic Council, Inc. Topics include free market capitalism, price stabilization, the elimination or reduction of taxes, anti-communism, the Federal Reserve, inflation and the gold standard, the Marshall Plan, and foreign aid.

Tijuana Bibles, also known as eight-pagers or dirty little books, were small eight-page publications of cartoon erotica and pornography that became popular during the 1930s and 1940s. This collection includes about 400 Tijuana Bibles, some of them duplicates; a few folders of erotica drawings and drafts by an unknown artist; and printed material about Tijuana Bibles, published from the 1970s through the 1990s.

Roundell Tristram Toke diaries and photographs from military service in China and Japan, 1900, 1905-1907

Roundell Tristram Toke (1896-1957) was a British Army officer from Folkestone, England who was stationed in China during the Boxer Rebellion, and in Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. Collection comprises diaries and photographs documenting in detail his military service in China and Japan during the Boxer Rebellion, 1900, and Russo-Japanese War, 1905 to 1907. The first diary is set in China; the other three in Japan. All four contain daily descriptions of weather, social and administrative activities, military engagements, rations, medical training, diplomacy, and other details, with some sketches of formations and drill patterns. The diaries are accompanied by 146 photographs from China and Japan. The earlier group shows officers and soldiers from the eight allied nations, ruins and battle sites, and other scenes in Tianjin and Beijing following the Boxer Rebellion, 1900; later images show civilians and street life; military camps; drills; equipment; engagements; Russian war prisoners and their camps; towns; landscapes; harbors; and a few social gatherings. The collection also includes Toke's leather cigar case, inscribed on the inside with his postings with dates, beginning with Weihai, China, 1900.

Diary of military service in China, 1900 January-December 1 Volumes (In custom box with two other volumes.)

One bound commercial diary filled with almost daily entries by Toke, detailing his service in China during the Boxer Rebellion. The life of an officer at the camp Wei-hai-wei included much dining, sightseeing, and playing sports, until Chinese anti-colonial militias began their violent uprising. In March 1900, Toke writes of dispersing unlawful assemblies in neighboring villages, followed by battles to put down the rebellion, and scenes of destruction, with dead and wounded soldiers as well as many civilians.

Two bound commercial diaries, filled with almost daily entries recounting Toke's service as an attaché to the British Embassy in Tokyo. Besides numerous entries concerning the weather, his travel within Japan, his dining companions (including notable government officials and nobility), and living arrangements, he also includes some insights into military matters, including details relating to the Battle of Mukden, although does not appear to have seen any action himself.

Disbound but with the original upper wrapper present, this diary of approximately 212 pages covers a brief period following the Russo-Japanese War in which Toke was attached to the 1st Regiment of Imperial Guard at Takehashi Barracks. His detailed observations concern the military maneuvers and exercises of the regiment, as well as their outfitting, arms, daily rations, and organization. He also comments on social gatherings and individuals he meets.

Haiti Tourist Bureau photographs, 1950-1955

Collection consists of seventeen glossy 8x10 inch black-and-white photographs of tourist destinations and activities in Haiti, marked on the versos with the associated name of the Haiti Tourist Bureau in New York City, established sometime around 1950. These images served as visual components for the island's 1950s tourism campaigns, and show white tourists in various posed scenes, visiting handicraft shops and outdoor markets, riding donkeys, enjoying the beach, and watching folkloric dances. There are also several views of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and smaller towns such as Cap-Haïtien, as well as resorts, beaches, town streets, and mountainsides. Noted Haitian photographer Edouard Peloux's name appears on a print signed "Ed. Peloux, 19-7-53." The rest are unsigned and undated. Several of the photographs appear in a 1955 publication, "A Guide to Haiti, Star of the Caribbean," also by the Haiti Tourist Bureau.

American Song Sheets collection, circa 1830s-1920s, bulk 1850s-1880s

In the mid nineteenth century, publishers printed the lyrics to popular songs, without their tunes, on small sheets called song sheets, handbills, or broadsides. These sheets were often illustrated with a woodcut scene or portrait and sold at gathering places where people sang together. Duke's collection of American song sheets includes 1,982 of these ephemeral productions, from "The Star Spangled Banner" to "Pop Goes the Weasel," forming a rich source for research on American society and culture. The American South and the Civil War era are especially well documented, including well over one hundred Confederate broadsides. The collection also includes carrier's addresses, non-musical poetry, and other ephemeral verse. Publishers represented in the collection include: J. Andrews, A. W. Auner, Bell and Company, James D. Gray, Johnson and Company, Charles Magnus, H. de Marsan, T. M. Scroggy, St. Clair Smith, John T. Thorne, H. J. Wehman, J. Wrigley, and others.

The Arabic Film Posters collection comprises more than forty color movie posters published between 1957 and 2008 in Egypt. The posters publicize popular film productions by major Egyptian film directors that were shown in Arab countries. Film genres represented are drama, comedy, adventure, historical fiction and war. The information in each entry is transcribed from the poster, and may include actors, producer, title in Arabic and in English, date released or date of poster publication, and country of origin. Title transcriptions and English translations supplied by library staff. A few of the posters are undated and some have not been positively identified. Smaller posters are housed in an oversize box and the larger sizes in two oversize folders; the smaller posters are currently undescribed but are open to access.

Charles L. Abernethy, Sr. (1872-1955) was a Democratic Congressman representing eastern North Carolina from 1922-1935. His professional papers consist chiefly of correspondence and records from his law practice and legal cases, with smaller amounts of writings and speeches, financial papers, printed materials, diaries, and some personal papers, including early deeds. There is also a large group of photographs, photo albums, and clippings scrapbooks chiefly documenting Abernethy's political career. One album from 1907 contains postcards of Beaufort, N.C.; another contains photographs of a three-month Congressional trip to Alaska, 1923, and includes images of President and Mrs. Harding and a diary transcript of the trip. Other items include some papers of his son, Charles Laban Abernethy, Jr., also a lawyer, and a volume of his poetry.

The volume is title "Jeanette Reid Healy, Srinagar, Apr. 1921," and begins with an entry dated May 15, 1921. This volume describes the Healys' journeys around India and Pakistan, including the following places: Kuari Pass, Deosai Plains, Shizar, Khalatse, Himis, Nimu, Leh, Nurla, Kharbu, Pahalgam, Bawar, Bemi Sama, Kanabal, the Pir Panjal mountain range, and ending in Peshawar. The majority of the diary discusses their travel conditions, with some description of Augustus's hunting expeditions for ibex, bear, marmots, and red fox (of which he was largely unsuccessful). While in Bemi Sama, the couple participated in a bear beating: villagers beat the brush and forest, driving the bear toward the hunters. Healy describes this event in great detail. The volume ends on Nov. 21, 1921.

Alabama family whose members were instrumental in founding the Alabama School for the Deaf in Talladega. The Johnson family's papers chiefly contain letters (1927-1930) from Nellie Hall Johnson (wife of Joseph Henry Johnson Jr.), of Talladega, Alabama, to her son, Seaborn Johnson, while he was a student at Alabama Polytechnic Institute and elsewhere. Other papers represent three generations of the Johnson family in Alabama and Georgia, and include correspondence, some legal and financial papers, student papers from the University of Alabama, and printed material. Of particular interest is the 1861 muster roll of the Alabama Rifles, and items referring to the sale of slaves. Other topics in the family papers include life in Cave Spring, Georgia and the history of Hollins College. Persons represented include Abner Darden, Joseph Henry Johnson Jr., and the Asbury and Darden families.

Nathan Carter Newbold family papers, 1848-1952 and undated

North Carolina family active in education, law enforcement, farming, and slavery. The bulk of the papers relate to Nathan Carter Newbold and his relatives, including his father William A. Newbold and grandfather William Newbold (Sheriff of Pasquotank County, North Carolina), his first wife Mabel Wooten, and his second wife Eugenia Bradsher. Nathan Carter Newbold was the Director of the Division of Negro Education for the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction from 1913-1950. The collection includes personal and professional correspondence, photographs, financial and property records dating from the 1840s, and recorded speeches given at Nathan Carter Newbold's retirement dinner. Some photographs have been identified as being of South Carolina during the late 19th century-early 20th century, which include portraits, street scenes (in Charleston), sail boats, as well as a few photographs of people of color, including photographs of "Lascar Sailors."Some photographs are of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point during the 1890s. Many of the legal and financial papers were generated by Nathan Carter Newbold's father and grandfather. The bulk of the correspondence relates to Nathan Carter Newbold's role as an administrator for North Carolina public schools and to his tenure as the Director of the Division of Negro Education during segregation and Jim Crow.

The Memory Project Oral History collection | 民间记忆计划口述史, 2009-2016

The Memory Project Oral History collection comprises digital video recordings and written supporting documentation of interviews spanning 2009 to 2016. The interviews were conducted by filmmakers associated with the Work Station, a film studio run by Wu Wenguang in Caochangdi, Beijing, China. Memory Project interviews were conducted with Chinese people about mid-20th century rural life, primarily experiences during the Great Famine (1958-1961), but also the Land Reform and Collectivization (1949-1953), the Great Leap Forward (1958-1960), the Four Cleanups Movement (1964), and the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Wu's studio in suburban Beijing, known as the Work Station, is the home for this project. More than 150 young filmmakers have joined the project, and since 2010 they have visited 246 villages in 20 provinces and interviewed more than 1,100 elderly villagers. These filmmakers, many of whom returned to their families' rural hometowns, developed new intergenerational relationships with elderly relatives. During the process of interviewing the villagers, they reconciled the official history taught in schools with each family's experiences.

Wu Dayu (b. 1924) is a resident of Liudian Village, Madian, Woyang, Anhui Province. Wu recollects that in 1960, some people collapsed on the road and died of hunger. If people worked slowly or stole food, they would get beaten up. For her kids, Wu once walked miles to digged for frozen sweet potatoes. Still, two of her children died of hunger.

This is a handwritten note in black ink on letterhead from the 1st Permanent War Council of the 17th Military Division for the French Government. Written during the French Revolution, the document is dated as 26 Messidor, l'an 6 (July 14th, 1798).

The Russian Posters Collection is divided into three series spanning the years 1919 to 1989: 30 posters emphasizing the benefits of communism and the first "Five Year Plan" for workers, the achievements of the USSR under communism, religion as an enemy of the people, and the struggle against and decline of capitalism; 14 placards from the 22nd Congress of the Communist Party of the USSR describing and depicting the strength of the country in industrial development, consumer goods, agricultural production, electrification, and the national welfare; and the collapse of the colonial system of imperialism and the problems facing capitalism; and last, ten posters from the "perestroika" period of the 1980s, most of which were exhibited in Moscow in 1988. In addition, the collection houses nine facsimiles of Russian posters from the 1920s-1930s. The posters have been digitized and are available online.

Other firms frequently mentioned include Hugh Bolton & Co., Geo. D. Wetherill & Co., and Clark & Jones. Album contains 51 albumen silver prints taken in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka); Bellary, India; Constantinople (Istanbul), and Egypt. A few images are from Nice, France, and Monte Carlo. The album bears no owner's name, but likely belonged to an individual in the British Army. On the first leaf is pasted a large coat of arms with a motto from the Isle of Man. The Sri Lanka images date from 1894-1895 and include: images from Colombo of military barracks, the hotel Mount Lavinia, Galle Face Green, the British Governor's palace; monsoon waves on a breakwater, polo grounds, and a racetrack; views from the town of Kandy and its lake; images from Trincomalee from an Officers Mess; and race scenes from Nuwara Eliya and Colombo. Views from Egypt show the Great Sphinx, streets in Cairo, and palaces in Alexandria. Images from Constantinople include street scenes, mosques, the port, and the arsenal, while those from India include servants with racehorses, and British men and servants at private residences. There are also images of the hospital ship "Spartan"; portraits of the B and C Companies, 4th Royal Warwickshire Regiment, Dublin, 1902, and the 1st Royal Warwicks in Bellary, India, 1899; a military camp "Marachah," possibly in Afghanistan; and images of military buildings in Sri Lanka. Many of the Sri Lanka images are credited to William H.L. Skeen, a commercial photographer based in Colombo and Kandy; several prints bear his studio's imprint, while others are unattributed but are probably his. The Middle Eastern views are all prints by commercial photographers: the Zangaki brothers (one print), Schroeder & (three prints) and Sebah & Joaillier (five prints). Collection contains diaries of Martha (Foster) Crawford as a young woman in Alabama, 1845-1851, and later as a Baptist missionary to China. Topics include conditions in Shanghai from 1852 to 1864 and afterwards at Tengchow, Shantung, and her reactions to the Civil War in the United States. The Shanghai period covers the Taiping rebellion and discusses the hope that the rebellion might furnish a means for converting the Empire to Christianity. One hundred fifty-three video files of interviews with 149 former detainees and others -- attornies, chaplains, guards, government officials, human rights advocates, journalists -- who witnessed the impact of the Guantanamo Bay detention center in the post-911 years. An additional 346 files, short clips extracted from the interviews featured on the Witness to Guantanamo site, are also included.

Nathan Ockman programs collection, circa 1949-2006

Nathan Ockman was born on December 29, 1926 in New York City. As a child in the 1930s, he was brought by his parents to an event that featured pioneering choreographers in modern dance, among them Anna Sokolow and Sophie Maslow. Though he received no formal dance training himself, this childhood exposure to modern dance sparked a lifelong passion for dance spectatorship. The collection contains the dance-related memorabilia (circa 1949-2006) saved by Nathan Ockman. Materials include performance programs and newspaper clippings, which are arranged chronologically. Many of the materials are annotated by Mr. Ockman.

Stephanie Reinhart (1944-2002) began working at the American Dance Festival in 1977 as the Director of Planning and Development and became Co-Director with Charles L. Reinhart in 1993. While on the board Stephanie traveled to many countries to view dance and lecture on American modern dance and arts administration, and in 1993 she was awarded a Fulbright research grant to study modern dance in Argentina.

Contains the personal and professional records of Paul Magnus Gross, a Duke University administrator, researcher, educator, and scholar. Gross was an Assistant Professor of Chemistry (1919-1920), William H. Pegram Professor of Chemistry (1920-1965), Chair of the Chemistry Department (1921-1948), Dean of the Graduate School (1947-1952), Dean of the University (1952-1958), and Vice-President in the Educational Division (1949-1960). The Paul M. Gross Chemistry Laboratory was named in his honor. Gross was also an independent consultant with the United States Army and various commercial companies. Types of materials include correspondence, clippings, reports, research papers, meeting notes, conference materials, contracts, speeches, dedications, eulogies, lecture notes, financial information, postcards, and building plans. In 1942, Duke University created the Department of Aesthetics, Art and Music. In 1960, the Department of Music formed as a separate department. Allan H. Bone, Duke professor from 1940 to 1983 and conductor of the Duke Symphony, was instrumental in the formation of the department. British composer Iain Hamilton was a faculty member for seventeen years. The Dept. of Music audiovisual materials collection contains audio and video resources made between 1951 and 1996, primarily on open reel audio and video tape, of the Duke Symphony Orchestra, the Duke Wind Symphony, the Duke Glee Club, the Ciompi Quartet, and the Duke Collegium Musicum, as well as other recordings related to the faculty and students of the Duke University Department of Music. There are also audiocassettes and a few videotapes. Faculty members represented include Jane Hawkins, Penelope Jensen, Randall Love, Robert Parkins, Fred Raimi, Claudia Warburg, Mary Lou Williams, and Ruth Friedburg. Picture File, 1700s-1980s, bulk 1814-1950

The Picture File was created and maintained beginning in the 1950s by the Duke University Manuscript Department staff and its institutional successors as a vertical file of pictorial works separated from manuscript collections as well as acquired individually. The collection is large and diverse, with images dating from the 18th through the 20th centuries. Engravings feature prominently, with photographs a close second. The predominant genre is portraits of political and military leaders, authors, artists, physicians, scientists, and others. Members of the Duke family and others from Durham, N.C. are also present. In the Socialist Party Series there are numerous images of leader Eugene Debs. Topics range widely, with a focus on American history, including the Revolutionary and Civil Wars; history and culture of the southern U.S.; and U.S. and European politics. A significant number of individuals in the People Series are African Americans, ranging from individual studio portraits to groups of individuals and racist caricatures and cartoons; a smaller number are of Native Americans.
