Nathan Ockman was born on December 29, 1926 in New York City. As a child in the 1930s, he was brought by his parents to an event that featured pioneering choreographers in modern dance, among them Anna Sokolow and Sophie Maslow. Though he received no formal dance training himself, this childhood exposure to modern dance sparked a lifelong passion for dance spectatorship. The collection contains the dance-related memorabilia (circa 1949-2006) saved by Nathan Ockman. Materials include performance programs and newspaper clippings, which are arranged chronologically. Many of the materials are annotated by Mr. Ockman.

Stephanie Reinhart (1944-2002) began working at the American Dance Festival in 1977 as the Director of Planning and Development and became Co-Director with Charles L. Reinhart in 1993. While on the board Stephanie traveled to many countries to view dance and lecture on American modern dance and arts administration, and in 1993 she was awarded a Fulbright research grant to study modern dance in Argentina.

Patricia Edison Powers Jones (1924-2011) was born in Waterbury, CT. Jones attended Bennington College, graduating in 1946 with a BA in Social Science. She moved to Chapel Hill, NC, in 1957. Powers was an avid supporter of American Dance Festival until her death in 2011. Collection includes photographs, programs, clippings, books, and musical and choreographic scores.

Cordel literature are popular and inexpensively printed booklets or pamphlets in Brazil containing folk novels, poems, and songs. They are a grassroots form of communication and serve as a conduit for popular opinion. This collection contains booklets of cordel literature written by various authors in Portuguese. These booklets primarily address political topics such as elections, contemporary Brazilian presidents, and high-profile corruption; others contain profiles or stories from Brazilian history.

Contains the personal and professional records of Paul Magnus Gross, a Duke University administrator, researcher, educator, and scholar. Gross was an Assistant Professor of Chemistry (1919-1920), William H. Pegram Professor of Chemistry (1920-1965), Chair of the Chemistry Department (1921-1948), Dean of the Graduate School (1947-1952), Dean of the University (1952-1958), and Vice-President in the Educational Division (1949-1960). The Paul M. Gross Chemistry Laboratory was named in his honor. Gross was also an independent consultant with the United States Army and various commercial companies. Types of materials include correspondence, clippings, reports, research papers, meeting notes, conference materials, contracts, speeches, dedications, eulogies, lecture notes, financial information, postcards, and building plans. Major subjects include Duke University, the Graduate School, the Department of Chemistry, University Council, the Board of Trustees, University Research Council, Duke University administration, University Committee on Long-Range Planning, Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, study and teaching of physical sciences, military training, war education, munitions development, United States Navy, United States Army, Office of Ordnance Research, universities in the southern United States, and the Gross-Edens controversy. Major correspondents include J. Deryl Hart, Robert Lee Flowers, Douglas M. Knight, Marcus Hobbs, Charles E. Jordan, and Arthur Hollis Edens. Materials range in date from 1935-1979. English.

Collection is a set of postcards (including photograph postcards) from late 19th and 20th century Turkey, depicting scenes and people in İzmir (Smyrna), Turkey. The first folder of postcards have been individually numbered. The subsequent folders list the postcards by titles that are either on the postcards and/or were supplied by the dealer who sold the postcards to the library. The postcards are described in English, French, and Turkish.

Sugoroku are Japanese games similar to snakes and ladders, which in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were sometimes included in newspapers and children's magazines. Includes 26 sugoroku games (some items are double-sided), primarily dating from the 1910s to 1930s, with a few earlier and later.

In 1942, Duke University created the Department of Aesthetics, Art and Music. In 1960, the Department of Music formed as a separate department. Allan H. Bone, Duke professor from 1940 to 1983 and conductor of the Duke Symphony, was instrumental in the formation of the department. British composer Iain Hamilton was a faculty member for seventeen years. The Dept. of Music audiovisual materials collection contains audio and video resources made between 1951 and 1996, primarily on open reel audio and video tape, of the Duke Symphony Orchestra, the Duke Wind Symphony, the Duke Glee Club, the Ciompi Quartet, and the Duke Collegium Musicum, as well as other recordings related to the faculty and students of the Duke University Department of Music. There are also audiocassettes and a few videotapes. Faculty members represented include Jane Hawkins, Penelope Jensen, Randall Love, Robert Parkins, Fred Raimi, Claudia Warburg, Mary Lou Williams, and Ruth Friedburg. Other featured musicians are Milton Babbitt, Barbara Lister-Sink, Claudia Bloom, Boaz Sharon, and Bruce Berg. English.

The Radical and Labor Pamphlets Collection (1896-1977) includes pamphlets and other ephemeral publications relating to communism, socialism and other left-wing movements, labor organizations, trade unions, feminism and the women's movement, and Black power. There are some additional pamphlets related to anti-communist movements and some examples of Soviet propaganda.

The Picture File was created and maintained beginning in the 1950s by the Duke University Manuscript Department staff and its institutional successors as a vertical file of pictorial works separated from manuscript collections as well as acquired individually. The collection is large and diverse, with images dating from the 18th through the 20th centuries. Engravings feature prominently, with photographs a close second. The predominant genre is portraits of political and military leaders, authors, artists, physicians, scientists, and others. Members of the Duke family and others from Durham, N.C. are also present. In the Socialist Party Series there are numerous images of leader Eugene Debs. Topics range widely, with a focus on American history, including the Revolutionary and Civil Wars; history and culture of the southern U.S.; and U.S. and European politics. A significant number of individuals in the People Series are African Americans, ranging from individual studio portraits to groups of individuals and racist caricatures and cartoons; a smaller number are of Native Americans.
