St. Joseph African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in Durham, N.C. in 1869. The church fan collection consists of 16 fans distributed to congregation members. Fans depict on one side devotional and pastoral scenes; on the other side are religious and promotional messages from various Durham, N.C. African American-owned businesses. Businesses represented include automotive repair shops, bakeries, flower shops, funeral parlors, grocery stores and laundry services. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

The Scrolls of Fire screen prints is a partial collection of the images created by Israeli painter and graphic artist Dan Reisinger (1934-2019) to illustrate verses by Israeli poet Abba Kovner. Reisinger's illustrations and Kovner's verses were published with parallel Hebrew and English text in 1981 as Megilot ha-esh [Scrolls of Fire: a nation fighting for its life: fifty-two chapters of Jewish martyrology].

Interdisciplinary Studies at Duke University became an office under the direction of the Provost with the appointment of the first Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies in 1998.
