The collection contains correspondence and other papers relating to Mrs. Barton's activities in the Protestant Episcopal Church in her home town of Winchester, Va., and on the state level. There are also letters from her husband, Robert Thomas Barton, lawyer and state politician, discussing political matters in Virginia, the stationing of troops along the Mexican border during Woodrow Wilson's first administration, and Wilson's election campaign of 1916. Other correspondents include Philip Alexander Bruce, Lucian Carr, Robert Atkinson Gibson, and Marie Elizabeth Jeffries Hobart.

    Henry Charlton Bastian papers, 1841-1932 and undated bulk 1870-1920

    Prominent British scientist active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for his work on spontaneous generation (abiogenesis) and neurological science. Collection dates from 1841-1932 and documents Bastian's rise as a neuroscientist, biologist, writer, and researcher, and encompasses typed and manuscript correspondence, research notes, offprints, handwritten drafts, early scientific photographs, pencil and ink drawings, and professional reviews and accolades. The largest series contains correspondence dating from 1856 to 1932, from prominent scientists, neurologists, scholars, publishers, assistants, and friends, including Louis Pasteur, Caleb Saleeby, Thomas Huxley, Sir John Bretland Farmer, Aristide Pratelle, William Paton Ker; there are also letters written by Bastian, including exchanges with the Académie des Sciences in France. The materials chiefly concern Bastian's early 20th century work on abiogenesis, but also on aphasia and paralysis. The collection also contains numerous pieces of correspondence addressed to Bastian's daughter, Sybil Bastian, who was also a scientist, and his wife Julia. Other materials include obituaries, condolence letters, Christmas cards, and newspaper clippings. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

    James H. Pou Bailey papers, 1901-1970

    The James H. Pou Bailey Papers span the years 1901 to 1970 with the bulk of the papers dating from 1948 to 1965. The Law Practices: Clients Series (CLOSED), which contains papers relating to specific clients in his law practice, comprises the bulk of the collection. The papers also document Bailey's political interests and pursuit of political office, financial and legal matters pertaining to himself and family members, and his involvement in civic organizations. These concerns are documented by the Correspondence, Subject Files, Legal and Financial Papers, and Writings and Speeches Series. While the collection contains a few speeches to various organizations and civic groups, there are not as many as one might expect from a person who ran for the North Carolina State Senate three times and held the office for two terms (four years). Also, there are not many papers relating to his tenure as Judge of Superior Court from the 10th Judicial District.

Michael Barker (1886-1943) of Wilson, North Carolina. Topics represented in the scrapbooks include family life, relief efforts for Jewish victims of World War I in Europe, the Zionist movement, Nazi atrocities against Jews in Europe, and the speeches of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Barker's approximately 49 pages of memories (circa 1942-1943) detail his financial troubles, family updates, and feelings on the treatment of Jews in Germany.

      Prominent businessman and banker from Farmington, New Hampshire; established and managed multiple business investments in New Hampshire, the Dakota Territory, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Minnesota in the late 19th century. Collection consists chiefly of business correspondence dating from circa 1871-1886, almost all directed to Hiram Barker in New Hampshire, although in some cases Barker was the author. Correspondents include managers of Barker's businesses and investments in the Western territories and states of Dakota, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Minnesota, and other firms with whom Barker did business. Topics revolve around business matters and trends in New Hampshire, the Western states and territories, including but not limited to real estate loans and investments, land investments, banking and loans, financial difficulties such as loan defaults, and ranching or farming in the Western states listed above. A smaller group of letters concern personal and family matters of both the Barker and Hayes family, into which Barker had married. Arranged by state in alphabetical order.

      Collection consists of original black and white prints (thirty-nine 11x14's and one 8x10) and original color prints (thirty-one 11x14's) taken by Bamberger documenting the closing of the White Furniture Company of Mebane, N.C. These are the original prints used in the production of the book Closing: The Life and Death of an American Factory (1998) by Bamberger and Cathy N. Davidson. There are also proofs, primarily 3x5 machine proofs and 8x10 proofs of images selected as firsts, alternates, and seconds for the book; and related materials. Also included is a dummy of the book.

      Baltimore Pathological Society records, 1853-1872

      The Baltimore Pathological Society was formed in May 1853 by physicians Francis Donaldson, Charles Frick, Thomas H. Buckler, Thomas F. Murdock, Christopher Johntson, William C. Van Bibber, David Steuart and others. The first meeting of the society was held on June 11, 1853. Collection contains two manuscript volumes kept by the secretary of the society that provide a detailed record of the society's proceedings. Volume 1, dated 1853 to 1858, includes a membership list of the organizing members of the society, minutes of the first meeting held on June 11, 1853, and minutes of 84 additional meetings held from 1853 to 1858. Volume 2, dated 1867 to 1872, includes meeting minutes, roll calls, and the society's constition and by-laws. Both volumes document the society's discussion of cases and diseases and methods of treatment as well as medical demonstrations given at meetings. It appears that the society was re-organized in 1867 after an initial period of activity in the 1850s.
