Railroad investor and land speculator of Defiance, Ohio. Family, business, and legal papers (chiefly 1799-1887) of William C. Holgate, of his father, Curtis Holgate, and of William's daughter, Fannie Holgate Harley. Papers before 1852 relate mostly to legal and business affairs of Holgate and his father, including investments in Ohio land and New York railroads; papers of his daughter begin in 1872 and are concerned with family affairs, but also include references to birth control, abortions, a smallpox epidemic, and the education of women. Includes letters from students at Hamilton College and the University of Vermont in the 1830s; papers relating to land speculation; and material pertaining to the economic development of Defiance, Ohio, and internal improvements and education in Ohio for the period from 1830-1840.

Her second husband was a poor baronet, Sir William Holford, who died before her. Lady Holford died on 3 November 1720, without an heir. Collection comprises a handwritten manuscript copy (70 pages; incomplete, the text ends mid-sentence) of Lady Holford's will and codicils, created around 1720, following her death. In the will, large sums of money are bequeathed to several Oxford colleges, including Christ Church, Pembroke and Worcester Colleges, and Hart Hall, along with Charterhouse School. There are also lesser legacies made to various London charity schools, along with other amounts left to individuals.

    The non-profit agency International Monitor Institute (IMI) operated between 1993 and 2003, primarily to assist international war-crimes tribunals by collecting, indexing and organizing visual evidence of violations of international human rights law. The International Monitor Institute Records span the dates 1986-2006, and primarily comprise audiovisual materials related to IMI's documentation of contemporary conflicts and human rights violations around the world. Countries represented include: Burma (Myanmar), Bosnia and Hercegovina, Cambodia, Kuwait, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Thailand. Includes master and use copies of approximately 6000 videocassettes and 100 audio tapes and audiocassettes. The video and audio material is indexed by an extensive database developed by IMI which includes keywords, air dates, segment producer, segment title, and in some cases, transcripts and stills from the video. There are also many photographs and slides taken in the same regions, depicting destruction in areas of conflict, forced labor, refugees and refugee camps, and protests. The majority of the photos were taken on the Burma/Thai border, in Bosnia and Hercegovina, and refugee camps in Rwanda. Finally, there are extensive organizational records, including an extensive database of the audiovisual components. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive.

The International Monitor Institute Records, Middle East Videotapes span the dates 1991-2008, and comprise audiovisual materials related to IMI's documentation of contemporary conflicts and human rights violations in the Middle East, including Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Israel, Palestine, and Lebanon. The collection includes footage regarding the Iranian revolution, the Kurdish genocide in Iraq and refugee populations in Lebanon, chemical warfare, the September 11, 2011 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the war on terror, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The International Monitor Institute Records, Rwanda Videotapes and Audiotapes span the dates 1992-1999, and comprise audiovisual materials related to IMI's documentation of contemporary conflicts and human rights violations in Rwanda. The collection contains videotape segments of news broadcasts as well as documentaries of the Rwandan genocide, including footage of massacre sites and refugee camps, and interviews with both victims and perpetrators of the genocide. The collection also contains audiotapes of broadcasts from Radio Télévision Libres des Milles Collines (RTLM) and Radio Rwanda, classified as incitement to genocide, as well as several recordings produced by Reporters without Borders. The bulk of materials in this collection are audiotapes of RTLM broadcasts.

    • This report begins with Rwandans being interviewed at a grave site and follows with churches being accused of not showing a strong moral conscience, as well as denying any responsibility. An interview is featured with a Tai Chi professor, showing how he works to instill in the minds of Rwandans the 4 qualities of Tai Chi discipline: softness, humility, realism and patience. A close-up of a classroom follows, where Rwandans are learning self-discipline and self-control. It is believed that had the Rwandans taught self-control, the massacres would not have happened. The program focuses on Tai Chi training as a method to help heal the ills of the society and prevent future killing.

The International Monitor Institute Records, Burma Videotapes span the dates 1992-2002, and comprise audiovisual materials related to IMI's documentation of contemporary conflicts and human rights violations in Burma (Myanmar). These audiovisual records largely document the activities, interviews, speeches, press conferences and ceremonies of political figures, especially Aung San Suu Kyi, and document the activities of political and military institutions such figures represent, including the All Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF), the National League for Democracy (NLD) and the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC). Records also include extensive network and independent story packages of Burma and footage of human rights conflicts. Topics and footage cover life in Burma under military regime, refugees and refugee camps (especially Karen refugees), political prisoners, survivor stories, forced labor, Japan's role in the refugee situation, and Los Angeles protests against the SLORC and Unocal.     3. This video portrays a general picture of Burma's struggle for democracy and the Junta's human right abuses, and includes interviews with refugees, deserters and soldiers from the student army and an exiled student named Htin Aung.
    4. Behind the peaceful landscape and holiness of the pagodas, we see evidence of the torture of Burmese people. The people's demand for democratic changes in 1988 resulted in thousands of deaths.Thousands of students fled Burma in order to plan a coup against the regime.
    5. In 1992 reporters visited Manawplaw HQ of Karen National Union on the Thai border. The student army, All Burma Students' Democratic Front (ABSDF), joined them.
    6. Htin Aung was from a family of 10. His brothers and sisters were scattered and jailed.He could not attend the funerals of either of his parents.
    7. Htin Aung fled Burma with his family and left his little sister behind with villagers and never saw her again.
    8. Chatate's parents were killed by the army. He ran away and ended up joining ABSDF. He said, "I am not scared. I am holding a gun not a stick...."
    9. Kevin, an American living in Manawplaw said, "Nonviolent? After your father was taken as porter and your mother was raped and you were forced to watch? What can you expect?"
    10. In 1994 Htin Aung married San San Aye and had twin daughters. "As long as Burma is not free," he said, "we won't go back.We will stay here. We will fight if not in our generation then my daughters will carry on."
    11. An interview was conducted with two deserters from the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) who talked about abuses to porters.
    12. In January 1995 Manawplaw fell. Htin Aung was in the jungle at the time and his two daughters were hit by malaria.
    13. A reporter in Rangoon met San's parents with Aung San Suu Kyi.
    14. The National League for Democracy's (NLD) stand on ABSDF is as follows: "Unfortunately we can't stop them from taking up arms because we can't guarantee their safety here."
    15. During Christmas 1995, Htin Aungwas in Bangkok. In 1996, he left for Australia where he stayed in the Refugee Processing Camp for a year.
    16. At the end of the interview with one student and Myint Myint San about torture in prison, Htin Aung said: "My country will win finally." The reporter remarked, "The picture records the moment of truth before they are changed."

Thailand, Japan, United Kingdom and USA are trading with Burma and China has supplied arms.
    6. Burmese refugees who have escaped to Thailand: Unidentified male 2: "When we arrived at the monastery and looked back we saw some young women cowering; they fell into the gutter. The government thugs bayoneted these young women and beat them up with batons."; Unidentified female 1: "The soldier ordered my brother to dig his own grave.Then they cut off his arms and then his legs. Then they cut out his tongue and gouged out his eyes. Then they pushed him into the grave and shot him twice through the head and then filled in the pit."; Unidentified male 7: "I was not fed. They asked me if I wanted to eat. I said I did, so they said, 'Here's some food' and they stood on my face until blood came out of my ears.The sergeant asked me if I realized who he was, and I said I didn't. Then they tied me up to a tree and left me there for seven days."

In August 1997, Aung San Suu Kyi discussed various economic and political issues taking place in Burma and the National League for Democracy (NLD): "Investment in Burma won't be a success due to instability and inflation. Dialogue is the best possible solution to the problems in Burma." She expressed the NLD's readiness for comprehensive dialogue with the government, not merely a meeting. Although Suu Kyi's movements were restricted and her speeches were not reaching the public,people could get the updates through Radio Free Asia, BBC, VOA or theDemocratic Voice of Burma. Regarding the political stalemate, Suu Kyi said, "Politics is not a drama, it is everyone's life.The regime-sponsored National convention will not bring genuine democracy because their members do not truly represent the people." When generals accused her of being a dictator in NLD, she said generals did not understand democracy.

    5. November 1996: Burmese citizens do not have the right to file a complaint when they are deprived of political rights by the government. Although the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) signed the United Nations Convention on Child Abuse,they did not prevent children from working in government projects.       Robert A. Hill Collection, 1890-2014

      The Robert A. Hill Collection covers the period of 1800 to 2014 and documents Hill's research, writing, and publications about Marcus Garvey's life and work and the founding of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), as well as Hill's many other projects. Items in the collection include research material assembled by Hill, writings by and about Garvey, manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, clippings, microfilm, photographs, video and sound recordings, and objects. Series 1-4 contain the production papers of the Marcus Garvey Papers Project: American Volumes (AM), African Volumes (AF), Caribbean Volumes (CA), and Project Administration (PA). Hill's other projects and writings are included in Series 5-6 as Other Works by Robert A. Hill (OW) and Hill Personal (HP). The remaining Series 7-10 consists of Microfilm (MF), Primary Sources (PS), Research (RE), and the unprocessed Jamaica (J). The collection was acquired by the John Hope Franklin Research Center in 2015.

      Doris Duke audiovisual collection, 1899-2012 and undated

      Doris Duke was the only child of James Buchanan (J.B.) Duke, a founder of the American Tobacco Company and Duke Energy Company and a benefactor of Duke University, and Nanaline Holt Duke. Although Doris did her best to live a private life, she carried on the Duke family's pattern of philanthropy by contributing to a number of public causes such as the arts, historic preservation, and the environment. Doris Duke died in October 1993 at the age of 80. In her will she left the majority of her estate to the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. The Doris Duke Audio Visual Collection was created by combining 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm film reels, vinyl recordings, audiocassettes, and associated manuscript materials relating to Doris Duke's travels, her various estates, and her interests in jazz and gospel music, dance, history, and culture. The collection covers the years 1899 to 2012 and is organized into three series: Moving Images, Audio, and Sheet Music and Index Cards.

      Allyson Kay Duncan is a U.S. Circuit Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. She is the Fourth Circuit's first female African American judge. This collection consists largely of personal and professional correspondence from Duncan's nomination, induction, and service on the Fourth Circuit, with letters from family, friends, and colleagues across the legal profession. The bulk of the collection dates from the 2000s, but includes some assorted materials from her work as an attorney for Kilpatrick Stockton and the NC Utilities Commission in the 1990s.

          Wylanta Duke Strayhorn Aycock Holt (née Rochelle, 1881-1980) was the daughter of Durham merchant Leander Sydney and Jeanette Stanley Rochelle. Her first husband was Brodie L. Duke, and she later married four additional times. The Wylanta Duke Strayhorn Aycock Holt Papers date from 1889 to 1980 and chronicle the personal life of Wylanta as well as the business and financial transactions which she conducted as a landowner in Durham. Materials include correspondence, photographs, and financial records.

          Family with members in both Ripon, Wis., and Ann Arbor, Mich. Collection contains letters and photocopies of letters between family members, naturalization papers; a poem by Helen E. (Richley) Healy; copies of an undated memoir by Gertrude (Clark) Dunlap; an undated chronicle of the early years of James E. Dunlap; several other memoirs, journals and diaries; descriptions of a voyage in an American clipper ship; Civil War letters; genealogies of various families including the Dunlap, Dunlop, Life, Clark, Cooke, and Delamere families; original photographs; and a land deed. The 2007 addition (2007-0168) (600 items; 2.5 lin. ft.; dated 1821-1910 and undated) contains genealogies and family histories of the Dunlap and Life families and biographies of the family members; diaries dated 1865, 1867, 1873-1898, and 1910; autograph books; letters and a scrapbook from the Civil War; daguerreotypes and ambrotypes; and a bayonet presumably from the Civil War. Also included are transcripts of several of the letters and diaries.

          Dula Family papers, 1894-1946

          Lenoir, N.C. residents. Collection consists primarily of letters from Alfred Weimer Dula to his wife Adelaide (Mast) Dula and letters from Harry Stuart Hickman to his wife Elizabeth (Dula) Hickman. Many of the letters deal with experiences during WWII. Alfred Dula was one of the first optometrists in N.C. and wrote to his wife while travelling to small towns. Harry Hickman wrote from Aviation Medical School, San Antonio, Tex. There are other miscellaneous letters to and from various family members, some from abroad. There is one travel diary of a trip from Montreal to points in Europe.

Files of editors Jay Woodruff, Rob Odom, and other editors contain correspondence with writers whose work they were interested in publishing and editing. There are postcards and transparencies used in various issues; and a complete run of the magazine through spring 1999. There are two unidentified files. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

          Collection comprises three bodies of color and black-and-white work by photographer Jess T. Dugan: To Survive on this Shore: Photographs of Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Older Adults (2013-2017); A Moment Collected: Photographs at the Harvard Art Museum (2006-2008); and Look At Me Like You Love Me (2020-2021). Nearly all the images are portraits ranging from staff at the Harvard Art Museum, one of Dugan's earliest projects, to gender non-conforming people, gay men and women, and transgender people. The 120 prints are signed, dated, and titled by the artist. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke Unviversity.
