Fred Chappell (1936-2024) was an author and poet. He was an English professor at UNC Greensboro for 40 years, and he was the Poet Laureate of North Carolina from 1997 to 2002. Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) was one of the oldest and largest advertising agencies in the United States. It was headquartered in New York. In 2023 the agency was absorbed into marketing and communications firm VML. The collection includes newspaper and magazine print advertisements for companies and consumer products that competed with those of JWT clients. Product categories include airlines; alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages; bus and cruise lines; cosmetics; food; hair preparations; health products and drugs; household appliances and furnishings; radios and televisions; railroads; shaving preparations and toiletries; and tobacco products. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Consumer Reports is a product testing and consumer advocacy nonprofit organization based in Yonkers, N.Y., founded in 1936. Collection includes: black-and-white and color photographic prints; contact sheets; cartoons and line art; graphic designs; magazine page layout art and designs; posters; slides; and other visual materials. Images depict products and product testing methods photographed for inclusion in Consumer Reports' magazines and other consumer education and protection publications; office, library and testing facilities in Mt. Vernon and Yonkers, N.Y.; staff and Board of Directors members; and corporate events. Posters include Consumer Reports anniversary events; speaking engagements; and post-World War II consumer advocacy messages from organizations in England and India. Cartoonists and illustrators represented include Art Glazer, Bob Bugg, Bob Engelhart, Gary Larson, Joseph Farris, Joseph Mirachi, Marty Norman, Richard Guindon, Roy Doty, and Tom Bloom. The LeRoy T. Walker Africa News Service Archive is an extensive resource file assembled by ANS over the course of two decades in support of its news gathering efforts about Africa-related issues and U. S. foreign policy towards Africa. The collection spans the years from approximately 1960 to 1995, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1978 through 1994. Newspaper clippings, magazine articles, press releases, newsletters, brochures, and reports comprise the collection. Much of the material is gathered from mainstream media sources and government documentation in the United States, Europe, Africa, and other parts of the world. In addition, the collection includes significant resources from alternative, minority, and special interest presses world-wide that may be difficult to locate elsewhere. The archive contains scarce and difficult-to-locate materials such as numerous publications produced by non-governmental organizations and grass-roots/community groups that are/were involved in efforts related to independence movements, economic development, and human rights issues in Africa.
