Collection of photocopies of thousands of daily columns on advertising and closely related subjects appearing in major newspapers, primarily the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Tribune, and the New York Times. The most frequently represented authors are: George Lazarus ( Tribune, 1985-1999), Nancy Millman ( Sun-Times, until 1992), and Philip H. Dougherty ( NYT, died 1988 September), as well as Randall Rothenberg, Kim Foltz, and Stuart Elliott, who succeeded Dougherty at the Times. Various guest columnists also wrote occasionally for the NYT. For the time period covered, the files appear to contain most or all of the columns that were published in the three papers. The collection also includes several folders of articles and columns from the Wall Street Journal and other business publications, especially concerning management turmoil and succession at J. Walter Thompson Company in 1987. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, and Marketing History.

Family and personal papers, primarily Bevington's personal and professional correspondence (1931-2001), which includes letters from Ray Bradbury (1976-1993); typescripts of diary entries (1959-1989); 22 heavily annotated books of modern poetry, and research notes. There are also correspondence and professional records for Bevington's husband, Merle. Other items include one color and 9 black-and-white photographs, a scrapbook, passports, geneology information/records, awards, newspaper clippings, class records, and unpublished manuscripts.

Seven complete and five fragments of handwritten sermons dealing with various Biblical texts and subjects.

Collection consists of typescripts of Rev. Kenneth Johnson's sermons, many containing handwritten notes and accompanying material on which the sermon topic was based. Sermons are numbered and are arranged by date, according to the church Johnson was serving at the time. The 2002 accession also contains card indices of sermons (ca. 3600 items), which arranges sermons by title, topic, and scriptures and texts. Johnson's sermons were delivered at United Methodist churches across North Carolina, including McKendree Chapel, New Mt. Vernon-Shady Grove, West Bend, Oak Summit, Asbury Memorial, Green Street, Saint Andrew's (Charlotte), Central (Mooresville), Leaksville (Eden), First (Newton), Burkhead (Winston-Salem), Aldersgate Methodist (Shelby), and Grace Methodist (Greensboro). Johnson also preached several sermons in Indonesia (1995, 1998).

Collection comprises seven bound typescript volumes containing Lyons' daily accounts of his trips. There are postcards, brochures, and other materials related to his travel that were placed in the volumes. Destinations include Washington, D.C.; New York City; Boston; Nashville; Charleston, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago; the White Mountains; and the Adirondacks. Topics include destinations, the people he meets, hotels, train travel, and scenery. The collection also contains a postcard scrapbook; a pamphlet by James M. Gillis entitled, "The Ku-Klux Klan" (1922); and a bound typescript short story entitled "The Irony of Fate," which fictionalizes Lyons' father's participation in and life immediately after the Civil War. Primarily incoming and outgoing personal and business correspondence, bills and receipts, bank statements, and deeds (1890-1950). The material documents Newsom's real estate activities and Durham N.C.'s economic and urban development from the 1920s-1940s. Also includes financial ledgers; scrapbooks of Newsom's newspaper real estate advertisements; notebooks in shorthand; various Newsom family estate papers; and a poem by Newsom, "To the Men of the Golden Star," read by him at a World War I memorial service held at Trinity College (1919). The collection contains few records of Newsom's tenure as an official of Trinity College and Durham County. (02-102)

Collection consists of covers and advertising sections only taken from several decades of Commentary magazine issues. The material illustrates products, pitches, and endorsers marketed to the readership, primarily well-educated American Jews. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Accession 2002-0149 (778 items, 22.0 linear feet; dated 1971-2001) contains files of abortion, pregnancy, and hysterectomy malpractice cases in which Crist served as a consultant or codefendant along with the Crist Clinic. There is also printed material on reproductive topics. Also includes 2 VHS videocassettes; 6 color slides; 30 black-and-white and 2 color photographs. Addition 2003-007 (67 items, 7.3 linear ft.; undated) is composed of 16mm films used by "Crist Clinic Audio Visuals" in health education programs (undated). The clinic also offered the films for sale or rent to educators, students, doctors, parents, and others. The majority of the films focus on sex education for children and teenagers. Topics include puberty and menstruation, sex and sexuality, sexual orientation, lifestyle choices, and sexually transmitted diseases. Other topics include abortion; pregnancy and childbirth; infant care and nutrition; marriage and parenting; and drug and alcohol abuse.

Primarily consists of Executive Board and Sector and Advisory Groups correspondence, memoranda, and meeting records; financial and planning documents, including grant applications; and workshop, seminar, and presentation materials that document the organization's activities to raise awareness of and promote action on the causes of poverty in N.C. Also includes correspondence, memoranda, reports, and other writings by the executive director, J. Gordon Chamberlin; telephone logs and appointment books; various printed material concerning poverty in NC; 11 audio and 15 videocassettes; 134 black-and-white and 10 color prints; 10 color negatives; and 8 data cartridge tapes. Collection created by the JWT Chicago Office Information Center as a reference and research tool for business use. The term "non-proprietary" is JWT's term for research prepared or collected by the company but not on behalf of specific clients. The collection includes market and consumer research reports arranged alphabetically by subject. A small number of items represent JWT research done, but most were created by market research firms (e.g., Yankelovich, Elmo Roper and Associates), cable TV stations (e.g., MTV Networks), or magazines (e.g., Seventeen, Good Housekeeping), and others. Topics include consumer demographic analyses for the United States, especially of food and beverage products and restaurant services. Marketing to women is a major subject; there is also information on marketing to men, baby boomers, teens, and children. Acquired as part of the John W. Collection consists primarily of manuscripts and research materials related to Turnipseed's writings (1902-1960s), in particular his multivolume, unpublished autobiography I Tried: An Autobiography of Andrew Spencer Turnipseed. The collection documents Turnipseed's ancestry, early life, and roles as a theologian and activist. Includes many folders of personal and professional correspondence (1929-1980s); lectures and sermons (including 13 audio cassettes); course materials; and travel files. In addition, there are subject files on topics such as Methodism; civil rights; race relations and Southern politics; and public education, including higher education for African-Americans in Alabama. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

The Duke University Center for Documentary Studies Literacy Through Photography Records comprise negatives, contact sheets, and written work (generally handwritten or printed observations, comments, stories, poems, drawings) documenting school children’s views of their community, Durham, NC. The materials would be useful to those interested in visual culture, the psychogeography of children, and Durham history, society and living environment, as well as those interested in pedagogy and developing an arts-based curriculum in public schools. The units collected and organized in the Records are LTP class projects, sorted first by format, then chronologically.

The first accession of the collection comprises diaries (39 volumes) written by Ruth Finlay documenting the details of and her emotional reactions to her daily life, activities, behavior, social life, and family life between 1960 and 1994. Topics include her hospitalization, ongoing treatment for, and life following cancer (1985 and onward); her relationships with her husband, children, and grandchildren; and the death of an adult son (December 1988).

The collection consists largely of professional papers including subject and research files, correspondence, and writings. Materials pertain to Hulka's involvement in the education, promotion, innovation, and application of women's and reproductive health. Specific topics include laparoscopy, abortion rights, contraception, professional organizations, medical procedures, and educational materials. The collection also includes examples of medical instruments (some of which were developed and patented by Hulka), especially a variety of international IUDs and other forms of contraception including the eponymous "Hulka clip." Also contains drawings and photographs of surgical procedures; educational and presentation slides; blueprints of medical instruments; and correspondence and essays provided by colleagues and students. The collection contains primarily correspondence and greeting cards, including correspondence with John Craig Wheeler (considered the father of "black holes") on parapsychology and its intersection with theoretical physics. Also includes news clippings and scrapbooks documenting McMahan's life; illustrations she made describing her travels aboard Pacific-traveling cargo ships; several of her self-published children's books; and compilations of her cartoons from "The Meadowlark, " a newsletter published by Carolina Meadows, a retirement community in Chapel Hill, N.C.
