The British Patent Office was established in 1852 to analyze, approve, and record patent applications and patent rights. It operated as a division of the Department of Trade and Industry. In 2007 the name changed to the Intellectual Property Office. Collection consists of patent applications received by the British patent office between 1887 and 1904 which appear to have been removed from bound volumes such as "Patents for Inventions." Each application included an attestation from the applicant; a description of the design and function of the innovation; and usually a set of drawings for any mechanisms involved. The bulk of applications originated in Great Britain, but applications were also submitted by American, Australian, Belgian, French, German, and Swedish inventors. Applications address a range of advertising applications (direct mail, newspaper, outdoor, point of sale, postal stationery, retail, matchbooks and other specialty and novelty items, vending machines) that involve innovations relating to display boards and cases; lettering and typography; lighting and projected images; shop window fixtures; and sign construction. Inventors and patent clerks represented in the collection include Alfred Boult; Arnold Fraenkel; Elihu Thomson; Emanuel Spitzer; Frederick Rawson; Frederick Vine; John Frederick Marshall; Levi Yaggy; Richard Henry Brunton; and William Phillips Thompson. Several women inventors are also represented: Allison Bell Lennox; Emily Hand; Florence Chinnery; Josepha Schielle; and Sarah Jane Rollason. Acquired as part of the John W. The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Edward G. Wilson was an executive with JWT from 1930 until his retirement in 1971, and held the positions of General Counsel, Executive Vice-President and Secretary of the Company. The Edward G. Wilson Papers span the period 1906-1991 and includes clippings, correspondence, inter-office memoranda, reports, writings, speeches and personal diaries that highlight Wilson's 40 year career (1930-1971) as an executive with the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT). The bulk of materials fall between 1946 and 1971, and covers the period from Wilson's return to JWT following military service in World War II until his retirement. As General Counsel and head of JWT's Legal Department, Wilson oversaw contractual relations pertaining primarily to the sponsorship of radio and television programs for a number of clients--including DeBeers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., the Eastman Kodak Company, the Ford Motor Company, the Scott Paper Company and Unilever. The collection reveals JWT's relationships with radio and television personalities--such as Fred Allen and Edgar Bergen--and professional organizations including the Radio Writers Guild and the Television Writers of America. In addition, materials in the collection touch on the anti-communist movement and blacklisting within the U.S. entertainment industry of the 1950s--involving personalities such as Jean Muir and John Henry Faulk, among others. The collection also includes records from a number of JWT international offices, with heavier representation from offices in London; Bombay (Mumbai), India; and Johannesburg, South Africa, along with records kept by some of Wilson's predecessors, such as Donald Foote and Sam Meek, and the South African advertising executive and politician James Hamilton Russell.

Walter H. Smith donated this collection of Beat Literature. The majority relates to the career and life of Allen Ginsberg, a founding member of the Beat Generation. Other writers represented include Anne Waldman, Diane di Prima, and Anselm Hollo. Accessions (2009-0113) and (2009-0130) (200 items; 3.5 lin. ft.; dated 1959-2003) include books, compilations, journals, magazines, and other publications with works by and about Allen Ginsberg. Also included are posters and broadsides advertising events, readings, or publications by Ginsberg; many of these are signed. Accession (2010-0098) (25 items; 0.6 lin. ft.; dated 1950-2009) includes writings and some correspondence from Diane di Prima, Anselm Hollo, and Anne Waldman; also includes some Allen Ginsberg materials. Accession (2011-0045) (27 items; 1.5 lin. ft.; dated 1963-2007) includes pamphlets and publications by Gary Snyder.

The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) is an international human rights advocacy organization headquartered in Washington D.C. It partners with local organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean to raise awareness of human rights abuses in the region and to influence the foreign policy agenda of the United States government. The WOLA records span 1968-2023, with most materials dating from 1980-2009. Contains research and project files on nearly every country in Latin America, administration records, clippings, correspondence, printed material, audiovisual materials, and other assorted materials related to the work of WOLA. Major subjects include political and government issues such as coup d'etats, dictatorships, elections, human rights abuses, and policy; economic topics such as aid, development, labor and poverty; documentation and advocacy related to human rights cases such as violence, forced disappearances, and truth and reconciliation; security issues and police reform, including demilitarizing police, the School of Americas, and violence against women; drug policies; Hurricane Mitch; advocacy training for other NGOs and lobbying work; and various events and conferences in which these topics are discussed. Additional topics include the role and influence of the United States throughout Latin America by means of government and economic policy, military actions, and human rights work. Jack Faust Matlock was US Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1987-1991. This collection includes materials from him and his wife, photographer Rebecca Matlock, dating largely from the 1940s through the mid-2010s. The bulk of items relates to their work for the US Foreign Service; they were officially stationed in Washington, Moscow, Prague, Accra, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar and traveled extensively throughout the world. Jack Matlock was a key figure in the Ronald Reagan administration and participated in almost every US-USSR summit from the 1970s until his retirement in 1991. Also present in the collection are diaries, writings, memoranda, reports, clippings, interviews, photographs, event files, audiovisual materials, and other documents regarding the Matlocks' career, travels, interests, family life, and scholarship.

Feminist and author. The Sallie Bingham Papers provide rich documentation of the personal life, literary development, and philanthropic activities of Sallie Bingham, feminist and writer. The papers, dated 1900-2011, with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1940s to 2011, are comprised of correspondence, speeches, writings, subject files, personal papers, diaries and notebooks, legal and financial papers, audiovisual recordings, and photographic media. Included also are some records of The Kentucky Foundation for Women, a philanthropic organization founded by Bingham; The American Voice, a literary journal founded by Bingham and published under the auspices of The Kentucky Foundation for Women; and Santa Fe Stages, a regional theater founded by Bingham. Arranged into the following series: Audiovisual Materials, Correspondence, Diaries and Notebooks, Kentucky Foundation for Women, Legal and Financial, Miscellaneous, Photographs, Poetry, Santa Fe Stages, Speeches, Subject Files, Writings, and Oversize Material, with the Writings, Diaries and Notebooks, and Correspondence Series composing the bulk of the collection. The Carolina Justice Policy Center (CJPC) was a nonprofit organization founded in 1975 under the name Prison and Jail Project in Durham, North Carolina, whose primary mission was criminal justice reform in North Carolina. The collection comprises CJPC's office files and records documenting its staff and activities over the span of four decades, as well as the work of other local, regional, and national organizations. The records include correspondence, including exchanges with inmates and attorneys; meeting agendas and minutes; operational files; court records and case files; research files; books, articles, reports, and clippings; some photographs; a few born-digital items; and analog audio recordings, films, and videos. Includes a group of materials on Velma Barfield, executed in 1984. Topics include criminal justice and sentencing reform; the death penalty; prison conditions and construction; juveniles and women in the court and prison systems; prison-related statistics; alternatives to incarceration; racial justice; violence prevention; and rehabilitative programs. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

Charles Reinhart Management, Inc. (CRMI) was involved in dance company management, festival production, grant-funded projects, and assorted professional services. Collection includes correspondence, printed material, and business and financial records created by Charles L. Reinhart and the employees of Charles Reinhart Management, Inc., 1951-2008.

The Feminist Women's Health Center in Atlanta, Georgia, was founded in 1976 by a group of women dissatisfied with the health care options and information available to them and who desired to change this situation. The clinic started in 1977 with self-help groups where women were able to learn from each other and themselves through open discussions. It expanded to offer a full range of clinical services (including providing access to birth control and contraception, abortion, donor insemination, and pregnancy care) as well as educational, outreach, and advocacy programs, addressing subjects such as sexual hygiene, sex, and sexually transmitted diseases. Collection is comprised of files documenting the development and daily operations of the Feminist Women's Health Center, a feminist non-profit women's healthcare center, from the years 1973-2003. Major components of the collection include files from research studies conducted at the center, policies and procedures for maintaining the center, and incidents of anti-abortion protests at the center, specifically involving the group Operation Rescue. The National Abortion Federation, the professional association of abortion providers in the United States and Canada, also figures prominently throughout these records. The collection is organized into six series: Administrative Files, Clinic Files, Subject Files, Financial Material, Legal Files, and Audiovisual Material. The collection also contains a physically separate Closed Series, comprised of materials from the prior six series that are currently closed to research.

In 1968, Doris Duke established the Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF) with the express purpose of preserving, interpreting, and maintaining landscape and objects reflecting the 18th- and 19th-century architectural culture of Aquidneck Island (Newport, R.I.). In creating the foundation, Doris Duke had a simple plan: to purchase dilapidated 18th century homes and meticulously restore them so that every detail was as historically accurate as possible. During the next three decades, preservation remained a major focus among her many charitable endeavors. Saving eighty-three properties was an undertaking on a scale and scope that has never been repeated. Doris Duke gave $21.9 million to the Newport Restoration Foundation, the largest philanthropic gift she made to a single organization during her lifetime. The collection documents the daily business activities of the Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF), including purchases, renovations, and renting of various NRF homes, photo inventories of the furniture and other household items at each restored NRF home, weekly progress reports, and other routine matters. The architectural records in this collection are related to the renovation of several of the NRF homes. The materials in this collection are arranged chronologically and alphabetically thereunder.

Consumer Reports is a product testing and consumer advocacy nonprofit organization based in Yonkers, N.Y., founded in 1936. Leland Gordon was Professor of economics at Denison University who served on the Board of Directors of Consumers Union from 1942-1949. The Leland Gordon papers include correspondence, manuscript of papers and book chapter drafts for Economics for Consumers, conference proceedings and other printed materials. Topics include consumer education and protection, consumption, economic aspects of burial and funeral practices, packaging and labeling of products, weights and measures, and World War II-era wartime economies. Institutions represented in the collection include Denison University, the National Council of Churches, Office of Price Administration, and Stephens College. Acquired as part of the John W. This collection includes 39 photographic prints comprising the series Aunties, by Nadia Sablin, the 2014 CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography Award Winner. Aunties is a series of photographs detailing the lives of two unmarried sisters living in a Russian village.

Counselor, special advisor, director of communications, and speech writer to U.S. Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton. Gergen has also worked as a journalist, serving as Editor-at-large of U.S. News and World Report and as a regular analyst on the "MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour" and the "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer." A native of Durham, N.C., Gergen graduated from Yale University and the Harvard Law School and served for three-and-a-half years in the U.S. Navy. The collection includes materials from Gergen's career in politics as well as his journalism career. Among his political materials are presidential campaign materials for the 1972, 1976, 1980, and 1984 elections; subject files; office memos; chronological files and telephone logs; daily planners; and legal and financial papers; as well as drafts and transcripts of Gergen's and other's speeches. The collection includes 86 black-and-white and color photographs, 16 audio cassettes; and 106 video cassettes. Other materials document his journalism career, including editorials, interoffice memos, and other U.S. News and World Report documents; financial and subject files relating to his work as an analyst on the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour; speeches; correspondence, chronological files, and telephone logs; and financial papers. The addition contains 445 electronic computer files; 5 color and 40 black-and-white photographs; 16 slides; and 82 video cassettes; as well as 35 audio cassettes. The audio and video cassettes include interviews with Richard Nixon and Ross Perot.

Kristine Stiles is the France Family Professor of Art, Art History & Visual Studies. Her main field of research is contemporary art with a focus on experimental practices, as well as representations of destruction, violence and trauma in art. The collection includes several different series, including Stiles' personal and family papers, projects and writings, correspondence, photographs, and an artist archive documenting her correspondence and relationships with hundreds of contemporary modern artists from around the world. This archive has been sorted by each artist's last name and includes such artists as Chris Burden, Lynn Hershman, Allan Kaprow, Gustav Metzger, John Latham, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Yoko Ono, Raphael Montañez Ortiz, Dan and Lia Perjovschi, Carolee Schneemann, Wolf Vostell and many more.

Established in 1926, the Divinity School is one of 13 seminaries founded and supported by the United Methodist Church, and attracts students from around the nation and several different countries. The Divinity School has from its beginnings been ecumenical in aspiration, teaching, and practice. This collection contains information and materials documenting the operations of the Divinity School, including the activities of its deans, faculty, students, as well as various councils, committees and organizations within and associated with the school.

Bill Communications, Inc., a subsidiary of Dutch publisher VNU Business Publications, is a business-to-business publisher and organizer of trade shows. Sales and Marketing Management is one of their main trade journals. The Bill Communications Sales and Marketing Management Vertical Files cover the years 1960-1994, with the bulk of the material dating 1975-1985. Topics include advertising, black middle class, finance, food industry, hiring, legal perspectives, management, marketing, media, packaging, product trends, real estate market, research, the Robinson-Patman Act, salesmen and salesmanship, research, telephone industry, training, women consumers, youth market and youth alcohol use, and zip codes. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Collection consists of a photograph album containing 25 developing-out gelatin silver prints of early airplanes and aviators. The album is labeled, "Aero Meet, Lambert Field, St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 1910," and the photographs were taken during this St. Louis Aero Club's meet. The images range in size from 6.25 x 4.5 inches to 7 x 5 inches. Fifteen photographs include views of one or more Wright Brothers' biplanes or parts of them. There are three views of the Bleriot monoplane. Three photos include Theodore Roosevelt, one in a biplane. Aviators pictured include Achibald Hoxsey, French pilot Alfred LeBlanc, Walter Brookins, and Ralph Johnstone. All of the Wright biplanes that are clearly discernible in this album appear to be the Model A or what has been referred to as a transitional model. One negative is available.
