Collection of letters to and from Sir Henry Thompson (1820-1904), an English surgeon and a founder of the Cremation Society of England. Most letters in this collection are largely polite and perfunctory notes between Thompson and peers; some correspondents include his wife, the pianist Kate Loder; Empress Frederick of Germany; King George V of England; and King Leopold II of Belgium. The collection documents Thompson's social status and activities between the 1850s and early 1900s. It contains few details about his medical practice, aside from some materials advocating for the adoption of the practice of cremation. Some materials are addressed to members of his family, including son Herbert Thompson. Letters are numbered and itemized inventory is included with the materials.

Thompson, as well as small diaries discussing his daily life and observations while his unit was stationed in Washington D.C., throughout Virginia, and the vicinity of New Bern, N.C.

"Stewardess" aboard the ship; resident of Grimsby[?], England Collection comprises a manuscript journal and log book (59 pgs+ blanks) authored by Thompson while on a voyage between England and Jamaica from March 25 to April 28, 1935. However, the journal actually closes with a description of her train trip home on April 29. Includes Thompson's 33 black-and-white photographs, 2 telegrams she received from a Captain Greenhill, her certificate of discharge, and an Irish sweepstakes ticket for the Derby syndicate (dated June 5) that she purchased during the voyage. In addition, Thompson copied into the journal a 3-pg informational article on bananas, written by H.C. Bower, and kept a record of the ship's log for the trip. The S.S. Tetela was a cargo and occasional passenger ship that belonged to the banana-importing firm Elders & Fyffes, a wholly owned subsidiary of the United Fruit Company.

W.W. Thomas was a merchant active in the Cincinnati, Ohio area from the 1890s to the early part of the 20th century. Collection consists of newsprint prospectuses that advertise incentive awards to potential sales agents who met time-sensitive selling goals. Bicycles were prominent rewards for sales performance, in lieu of paying salaries or commissions, but dinnerware and a range of lesser premiums were also offered. Frequently, the items for sale themselves were offered with a premium of goods such as teaspoons or condiments. Acquired as part of the John W. The papers of tobacco industrialist and philanthropist James Augustus Thomas (1862-1940) primarily concern his commercial and diplomatic dealings in East Asia, and the opening of the tobacco market in China and other countries in the early 20th century. Materials include many boxes of correspondence, print and ephemeral materials, and photographs. Correspondents include Herbert Hoover, Robert Lansing, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Sun Yat-sen. Includes materials relating to U.S.-China foreign and economic relations; the marketing of U.S. cigarettes in Asia; the British-American Tobacco Company; domestic policies and financial development in China; political events in East Asia and Europe; and philanthropy in China, including Thomas' efforts to bring Chinese students to Duke University. There are also some personal letters and three audiocassettes of an oral interview with Dorothy Read Thomas, Thomas's widow, with a typed transcript; interview topics include her life in China and St. Petersburg, Russia in the 1920s.

Collection contains the records of the firm of Terrasson Brothers, established in Philadelphia by Antoine and Barthelemy Terrasson as a branch of their father's firm, John Terrasson and Company, headquartered in Paris and Lyons, France. Early business letters reflect the trade of the firm in grain, the furnishings of supplies to the French and American armies, and the purchase of tobacco at various places throughout the South. The letters contain information on the American Revolution, especially on naval operations, and on post-Revolutionary business conditions. Papers after 1800 concern the family of Mark Prager, members of which apparently married into the Terrasson family. Prager was owner of a trading firm in Holland. These papers contain information on Prager's trading activities until 1820, and on the family of Harriet Prager of Philadelphia. The later letters contain references to family affairs, slavery, politics and sectionalism. Approximately 100 Civil War letters describe conditions in the North.

Cookie Teer (Dorothy Foster Teer, 1941- ) is a radical feminist, activist, and speaker from Durham, North Carolina. The papers date chiefly from 1983-1997, providing in-depth documentation of the social, cultural, and political debates over pornography in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, with materials from both proponents and opponents of anti-pornography, as well as detailed documentation of the pornography industry, and transcripts from hearings organized by the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography, and other legislative activities. Other material relates to feminist activists, including Nikki Craft, Catharine MacKinnon, and Andrea Dworkin. Teer's extensive subject files also contain clippings, correspondence, interviews, and other materials pertaining to women's rights, feminists, feminist organizations and events, and social issues related to women and children such as rape, pornography, incest, prostitution, domestic violence, child custody, and child abuse. Walter J. Taylor (1934-2002) was a Black man from California who was incarcerated multiple times from the 1950s through the 1970s, including a period at San Quentin and Folsom prisons (1968-1973). During this latter period in jail, Taylor founded the Sisters of Motivation and the Community Concern for Prisoners organizations to help Black Americans convicted of crimes. Collection consists largely of materials from Taylor's time in prison and later as a community activist in Berkeley, California. Most of the materials comprise Taylor's incoming correspondence during his incarcerations in the 1950s through the 1970s, which includes letters from a variety of people, especially women participating as pen pals in the Sisters of Motivation organization. Other frequent writers are Taylor's wives, girlfriends, family members, and community organizations that he had contacted regarding his imprisonment and the general condition of Black men in prison. Other materials include personal items documenting Taylor's life, as well as writings and creative works by Taylor. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

This collection contains a variety of items including variant manuscripts of the 79 poems included in Harry Paul Taylor's book, IMAGERY IN POETRY. There are notes of ideas he incorporated into the poems, revisions, and some layout instruction. One folder contains a brief biographical sketch and a review in which Taylor explains how his poetry is written, what his poetical theories are, and what he hopes to accomplish. There are other poems, letters from Dr. Jay B. Hubbell to Taylor; and other correspondence and clippings concerning Allan Halladay and Gustave Whitehead. There is also an autographed copy of a book about Whitehead, HISTORY BY CONTRACT: BEGINNING OF MOTORIZED AVIATION by William J. O'Dwyer and Stella Randolph. There are three versions of SPACE AGE POETRY and a number of other poems on miscellaneous subjects. Included also is the volume A LIFE SCENARIO WITH ARTIST ANTONIO CIRINO by Charles Movalli, poetized by Taylor; and typescript copies of "The Lady of Liberty." This collection is a part of the Jay B. Hubbell Center for American Literary Historiography.

Also featured prominently in the collection is Charles Taylor's brother, Laurie, who was also a minister, pianist, and composer who often accompanied Charles Forbes Taylor on evangelistic crusades. Much of Charles Forbes Taylor's work was for Baptist churches in the U.S. Includes a calendar of Taylor's engagements in 1982-1983.

Meredith Tax (1942-2022) was a feminist writer and organizer whose activism began in the 1960s. Collection includes many files documenting Tax's feminist activism and her role in founding feminist organizations; drafts and manuscripts of her writings, music, and art; personal and professional correspondence; research materials; and subject files. Organizations represented in this collection include Bread and Roses; Women's WORLD; CARASA (Committee for Abortion Rights and Against Sterilization Abuse); PEN American Center Women's Committee; and the International PEN Women's Writers Committee, as well as other organizations. There are also audiocassettes, VHS tapes, and optical media containing Tax's research interviews as well as interviews with Tax. There are also electronic records formats, mainly documents and email correspondence. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

This collection contains family, personal, literary, and business correspondence and other papers (chiefly 1830-1886) of Taveau, of his father, Louis Augustin Thomas Taveau, and of their family. The collection centers around Augustin Louis Taveau and relates to his education, activities as a poet, European travels (1852-1854), career in the Confederate Army, postwar condemnation of Confederate leaders, removal to Maryland (1866), and agricultural efforts. Other subjects include family and legal matters, social life and customs in South Carolina, the education of Southern girls, rice planting before the Civil War, planting in Mississippi and Louisiana (1850s), agriculture and scientific farming in Maryland, Charleston during the Civil War, postwar politics, and other matters. Florence Tate (1931-2014) was a civil rights and pan-African activist based in Washington, DC. Involved in activism in support of Angolan independence, she later worked in support of the UNITA faction in the Angolan Civil War. In the United States, she worked as a press secretary for the first mayoral administration of Marion Barry and subsequently for the 1984 presidential campaign of Jesse Jackson.

Vincent Tapp (1757-1824) was born in Frederick County, Va., and served as a soldier in the American Revolutionary War and as clerk of Augusta County (Va.) Court. This collection contains business, family, and official correspondence of Vincent Tapp, including information about the Tapp family; Tapp's career as a soldier; and an account book for the construction of the hall of Masonic Lodge No. 13, of which he was an active member. It also contains a volume, "Overseers of the Poor," which contains records of caring for poor people in Augusta County, Virginia, 1791-1822.
