Collection of letters to and from Sir Henry Thompson (1820-1904), an English surgeon and a founder of the Cremation Society of England. Most letters in this collection are largely polite and perfunctory notes between Thompson and peers; some correspondents include his wife, the pianist Kate Loder; Empress Frederick of Germany; King George V of England; and King Leopold II of Belgium. The collection documents Thompson's social status and activities between the 1850s and early 1900s. It contains few details about his medical practice, aside from some materials advocating for the adoption of the practice of cremation. Folders of materials arranged loosely chronologically, with some undated materials in later folders. Includes an 1851 letter to Kate Loder, called "Kit", which contains a doodled self-portrait by Thompson and describes his current illness. An undated letter from Henry James in the House of Commons seeks to secure a vote from MP W. H. Leatham, then suffering from gout and under Thompson's care. There are letters to Thompson from King George V (a thank you note, 1893), Empress Frederick of Germany (1891), and King Leopold II (1869, 1872, 1875, 1876, 1880). Some letters are directed to Henry's son Sir Herbert Thompson, including a condolence note from King George in 1904, following Henry Thompson's death. One letter from Thompson advocates the adoption of cremation.

Collection contains the records of the firm of Terrasson Brothers, established in Philadelphia by Antoine and Barthelemy Terrasson as a branch of their father's firm, John Terrasson and Company, headquartered in Paris and Lyons, France. Early business letters reflect the trade of the firm in grain, the furnishings of supplies to the French and American armies, and the purchase of tobacco at various places throughout the South. The letters contain information on the American Revolution, especially on naval operations, and on post-Revolutionary business conditions. Papers after 1800 concern the family of Mark Prager, members of which apparently married into the Terrasson family. Prager was owner of a trading firm in Holland. These papers contain information on Prager's trading activities until 1820, and on the family of Harriet Prager of Philadelphia. The later letters contain references to family affairs, slavery, politics and sectionalism. Approximately 100 Civil War letters describe conditions in the North.

Collection comprises primarily invoices and book claims and requests, along with correspondence, company balance sheets, flyers, booklists, and catalogs, literary proposals and prospectuses, and other printed and manuscript materials related to the bookselling and publishing activities of The Tenth Muse. Much of the material is routine in nature and documents day-to-day work. Includes a folder of letters to and from Isabel Fraire, along with partial translations from the Spanish of her poems. Also contains letters or other material from poets and authors Bill Bissett, Robert Duncan, Tom Clark, and Tom Pickard. There is a copy of Lynn Lonidier’s manuscript for the second part of “A Lesbian Estate.” Among the catalogs is a Shameless Hussy Press catalog, with a handwritten note from poet and publisher Alta Gerrey on the front cover, as well as two 20-page copies of Ganglia Press Index, 1972, compiled by B. P. Nichol, with handwritten comments. Many items feature handwritten dates and notes.

The papers date chiefly from 1983-1997, providing in-depth documentation of the social, cultural, and political debates over pornography in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, with materials from both proponents and opponents of anti-pornography, as well as detailed documentation of the pornography industry, and transcripts from hearings organized by the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography, and other legislative activities. Other material relates to feminist activists, including Nikki Craft, Catharine MacKinnon, and Andrea Dworkin. Walter J. Taylor (1934-2002) was a Black man from California who was incarcerated multiple times from the 1950s through the 1970s, including a period at San Quentin and Folsom prisons (1968-1973). During this latter period in jail, Taylor founded the Sisters of Motivation and the Community Concern for Prisoners organizations to help Black Americans convicted of crimes. Collection consists largely of materials from Taylor's time in prison and later as a community activist in Berkeley, California. Most of the materials comprise Taylor's incoming correspondence during his incarcerations in the 1950s through the 1970s, which includes letters from a variety of people, especially women participating as pen pals in the Sisters of Motivation organization. Other frequent writers are Taylor's wives, girlfriends, family members, and community organizations that he had contacted regarding his imprisonment and the general condition of Black men in prison. Other materials include personal items documenting Taylor's life, as well as writings and creative works by Taylor. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

There are other poems, letters from Dr. Jay B. Hubbell to Taylor; and other correspondence and clippings concerning Allan Halladay and Gustave Whitehead. There is also an autographed copy of a book about Whitehead, HISTORY BY CONTRACT: BEGINNING OF MOTORIZED AVIATION by William J. O'Dwyer and Stella Randolph. There are three versions of SPACE AGE POETRY and a number of other poems on miscellaneous subjects. Included also is the volume A LIFE SCENARIO WITH ARTIST ANTONIO CIRINO by Charles Movalli, poetized by Taylor; and typescript copies of "The Lady of Liberty." This collection is a part of the Jay B. This collection contains business, family, and official correspondence of Vincent Tapp, including information about the Tapp family; Tapp's career as a soldier; and an account book for the construction of the hall of Masonic Lodge No. 13, of which he was an active member. It also contains a volume, "Overseers of the Poor," which contains records of caring for poor people in Augusta County, Virginia, 1791-1822.
