Major General Lloyd Brinkley Ramsey photograph albums of service in South Korea, 1959 July-1960 May

Lloyd Brinkley Ramsey was a U.S. Army three-star general who served in South Korea from 1959-1960 as Senior Military Advisor to the Korean National War College in Seoul, South Korea. The three spiral-bound albums house over 300 black-and-white mounted photographs, chiefly in 4x5 and 8x10 sizes, all with typed captions and commentary. The images document the War College campus, Ramsey's quarters, South Korean and American officers in group portraits and in military meetings, dinners, and parties, as well as official tours and visits, including to the DMZ and a U.S. guided missile base; and visits to Seoul streets and tourist sites, rice fields and markets, and to Tokyo, Japan. Ramsey often appears in event photographs. There are a few snapshots of Ramsey's family. Also includes about 20 close-range photographs documenting the violence and bloodshed at student and civilian street protests in Seoul against President Syngman Rhee, known as the April Revolution of 1960.

This spiral-bound album houses approximately 121 page-mounted and 5 loose sleeved photographs with typed captions and dates from July to October, 1959. Then-Colonel Ramsey came to Korea to serve as the U.S. Army advisor to the Korean National Defense College, near , South Korea, in July 1959.

    This album includes approximately 82 photographs with typed captions and some newspaper clippings, and dates from October 1959 through March 1960. It includes many group photographs of Korean and American military officers, including officials from the Chinese embassy, as well as many snapshots of then-Colonel Lloyd Ramsey. Other images show interiors at the National War College near Kisan, Korea, including the NDC library, auditorium, typing room, and leadership's offices. There is one photo of General Paik Sun-yup, Korea's first four-star general, who died at 100 on July 10, 2020. In Korea, Paik's death sparked a controversy on his pro-Japanese activities during the colonial period.

      This album includes approximately 134 photographs with typed captions and commentary. They chiefly document South Korean and American military personnel during meetings, relaxing in quarters, and posing for snaphots and group portraits. Events documented include the Korean Military and Naval Academies graduations. There are also many images from touristic trips to towns, to the Chang Gyung Won (Changgyeong Palace) Gardens, and to Tokyo, Japan, just before Ramsey departed for the U.S. from Taiwan. The first photograph is the only color image in the collection - a snapshot of Korean children playing with a seesaw on the street. Included is a large brochure for the Atami Hotel in Tokyo as well as a publicity magazine about the Tokyo Tower, a record-height communications structure built in 1958.

        Virginia Passmore Beaujean Scrapbook, 1938-1942

        Virginia Passmore Beaujean, a native of Nottingham, Pennsylvania, was a 1942 graduate of the Woman's College at Duke University. She was a member of the Kappa Sigma sorority, the Freshman "Y" Council, the Sophomore "Y" Council, the Woman's Glee Club, and was named to the Dean's List her Freshman and Sophomore years. The scrapbook contains clippings, programs, catalogs, and other ephemera. Also present are artifacts and other assorted memorabilia. Due to its brittle condition the scrapbook has been disassembled with each page housed in a separate folder.

The title page indicates the work was done by Louisa Wright during a "Second Year" at an unnamed institute or training facility. There are illustrations for hemming and seaming, stitching, sewing on a tape, gathering, setting-in, making a buttonhole, herring-boning, darning a thin place, tacking, making a gusset, making a calico patch, darning a hole, whipping, using a print patch, crosscut darning, Swiss darning and grafting, and stocking-web darning. The volume has a sewn cover in khaki cloth featuring two pink ribbon closures with bows, buttons, and thread button-loops. The title "Needlework" is emboidered in pink thread.

                Lucretia Mott was a Quaker teacher of Philadelphia, Pa.; a Hicksite; an abolitionist; and a promoter of women's rights, temperance, and peace. Collection includes a quote accompanied by Mott's autograph, along with three letters, including one regarding arranging a meeting, one regarding the death of Margaret Pryor, and one written by Mott to Thomas M'Clintock regarding the death of her brother and with news of other mutual acquaintances. There are also five items from an 1879 autograph book, including albumen photographs of Mott and an unidentified man, a copy of the same quote and signature of Mott, an address for a letter, and a newspaper obituary for John G. Saxe. Includes a 5.5"x7.75" albumen studio portrait of Mott that has some hand-tinting, taken by F. Gutekunst in Philadelphia in 1861, along with an undated carte de visite of Mott, also taken by Gutekunst. There is an additional undated carte de visite of Mott, by Broadbent and Phillips of Philadelphia.

                          Founded in 1937 in Clarkesville (Habersham Co.), Ga. by Morris Randolph Mitchell; took name from nearby Baptist Church; comprised of families and individuals who worked collectively on the dairy, agricultural, forestry, and woodworking projects which provided the economic underpinnings of the community; originally an economic cooperative, Macedonia later passed through two distinct phases before its demise in 1958; at end of WWII an infusion of former civilian public service men, including conscientious objectors who had served prison sentences, joined the cooperative bringing an emphasis on pacifism; last stages of cooperative lasted from 1953-1957 when members of group explored the possibility of merging with the religious community known as the Society of Brothers (Bruderhof); in 1958 Macedonia ceased to be a separate community and property was sold at public auction on June 27, 1958. Collection comprises 4 flyers regarding the various wooden block sets made by the community for children.

                                    Stuart Walter Case (1819-1876) was a white store clerk, originally from Indiana, who moved to Arkansas in the late 1830s. This collection consists of his letters home to his father, Thomas Case, which describe Stuart Case's experiences in Fayetteville, Arkansas between 1838-1840. The letters document his eyewitness account of the Trail of Tears through Fayetteville, with discussions of the animosity between different Cherokee factions; the exploitative businesses that sprang up to provision the forced emigrants along their route; and the bustling, diverse, and increasing violent community in Fayetteville.

                                    Manuscript letter from A. Case, in Clinton, Alabama, to Thomas Case, in New Albany, Indiana, 1837 November 25 Folder 1

                                    Letter believed to be from Abram Case (Stuart Case's brother) to his father Thomas Case, describing his route and travel to Clinton, Alabama. He describes traveling through Louisville and then suffering through poor weather and a lame horse. He also describes the local population in Clinton, noting "the people are rough and disapated drunkness prevails." He uses a racist slur to describe local Black citizens.

                                      Stuart writes with an update on the circumstances surrounding him in Fayetteville, describing "this county, and town in particular, has become one of the most lawless and uncivilized places in all creation.... Shooting, stabbing, knocking down and dragging out, appear to be the order of the day and present in this place. In fact the Cherokee Nation is almost (to use a horse racers phrase) distanced, in the race for savageness -- Great many honest well-meaning men are leaving the country, selling their property at considerable discount rather than to stay."

                                        Case explains that he has taken a new position, managing a grocery for Mr. James Sutton in Fayetteville, and that he now boards at the Fayette Ville Hotel and has moved away from Oakland. He disparages Oakland, describing the stores there as "being the most doggish, dirty holes you ever had any conception of, drunken Indians laying all about... there has been three men killed within the last two weeks within a compass of ten miles...." He continues, "where I am now there is great difference, the people being generally very civil and orderly, some very fine and have been well raised, and all uncommonly friendly."

The images mainly portray women at work, as textile and other industry workers; as scientists, medical professionals, and academics; and as participants in Communist Party education. There are also images that pertain to improvements in women's status, whether for minorities or workers in general. The majority of the photographs bear captions in both Chinese and English. Several have Hsinhua News Agency markings; beyond such markings, the photographer is unidentified. A few have sizing information for reproduction, and many were likely used in an exhibition on the status of women in modern China. Loosely organized according to amount within the following topics, based on the caption provided for the photograph: factory workers, professional women, Communist Party workers, commune and other workers, and minorities.

Communications in the collection are chiefly directed to the Spanish Consulate in Charleston, S.C., by the Madrid government, by Spanish diplomats and consular representatives in the U.S., and by governing officials in Florida, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. The papers of the 1790s and early 1800s are largely concerned with Spanish interests in Florida. The papers of the 1830s, except those dealing with routine commercial matters, are largely concerned with political affairs in Spain. As is made clear by the text, the intent of both voyages was to join her husband who was probably located in Zanzibar at the time.
