U.S. naval surgeon and medical historian. Pleadwell's correspondents include fellow military physicians and medical historians, who write on personal, professional and political matters. Correspondents of note include Arthur W. May, R.C. Munday, Charles Loomis Dana, William W. Keen, Charles Marsh Beadnell, Horace Manchester Brown, J. Chalmers Da Costa, Henry Barton Jacobs, Francis R. Packard, D'Arcy Power, Arturo Castiglioni, Fielding H. Garrison, and Henry E. Sigerist. A complete list of correspondents is available in the collection. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Records consist of a presentation dated October 2005. The presentation is made up of 18 slides featuring images and notes related to the Flowers Drive slump landslide in 1984.

Madame de Rhinfeld, née St. Clair, grew up in a convent in France, where she was instructed in the construction of artificial flowers. She later used this skill to make a living in England. Collection comprises an handwritten, unpublished manuscript volume (256 written pages, plus 45 watercolor and 5 pen and ink plates of illustrations) by Madame de Rhinfeld, written around 1830. In the manuscript, Rhinfeld provides detailed instruction on how to create 24 different artificial flowers, and describes the tools used to make them. Flowers include pomegranate, hyacinth, roses, pansies, narcissus, geraniums, and orange flowers, among others. Includes watercolor diagrams regarding the construction of each flower, with additional paintings of the finished piece. The instructions are accompanied by a chapter of poetry, stories, quotations, and commentary related to each flower. Scattered throughout the manuscript are other pen and ink drawings. Includes an index to flowers and to poets.

Papers include letters to William Howell Reed, thanking him for the gift of his Hospital life in the Army of the Potomac; to Lady Marian Alford, relating to the Lord Stratford de Redcliffe Memorial Fund; and a series of personal and very affectionate letters to Miss A.P. Lemon, later Mrs. L. Roscoria, a colleague and personal friend, regarding her health, as well as the illness of her mother, and affairs of the hospital. Other items are newspaper clippings about Nightingale and a postcard bearing her portrait.

The Black on White Steering Committee was appointed by Malcolm-Gillis, Vice-Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School. Its composition consisted of key faculty, student leaders, administrators, and staff whose purpose was to gather institutional support for a university-wide symposium that would address specifically the kind of environment provided for black students at Duke. The collection contains correspondence, memoranda, agendas, clippings, the final report of the committee (February 1989), and other materials associated with the planning and execution of the campus-wide Black on White Symposium. Materials range in date from 1988-1989.

David Edward Gatten is an American experimental filmmaker and moving image artist. Collection consists of one film reel: "Film for Invisible Ink case no. 323: ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" (dated 2010; 20 minutes, black-and-white, sound, 16mm). Also includes two copies of the catalog from Gatten's 2012 travelling retrospective of his career: "Ex Libris: Texts of Light," as well as an announcement for the 2012 premiere of his first digital film "The Extravagant Shadows". Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection comprises two letters written by Garrison. In the first, he writes to Dr. Lewis S. Pilcher about George Jackson Fisher as a pioneer in medical history. In the second, he responds to Professor Frederic Lee's inquiries after English and/or German translations of the Mount Ebers Papyrus.

The Fallout Preparedness Committee was appointed by President Deryl Hart in September of 1961 to prepare Duke University for a possible nuclear attack. The collection contains miscellaneous reports on the effects of a nuclear blast; diagrams of shelter spaces in Duke University buildings; second (1962), interim (1963), and third (1963) reports of the committee actions planned at Duke in the event of a nuclear attack and surveys of facilities; engineering design study for fallout shelter areas.

ALS. Requests copies of the minutes of those committee meetings of the Antislavery Society to which Mr. Price and Mr. Thompson refer.

The organization Facing History and Ourselves National Foundation was formed in the U.S. in 1976 to offer support for teaching about social justice in the classroom and in the community. Collection comprises seven regional calendars of programs offered in 2006-2007 by the Foundation. Printed as color brochure mailers, the calendars list detailed entries for classes and workshops for teaching the history of African Americans, civil rights, social justice movements, genocide, the Holocaust, and transitional justice; and to address injustices and violence in the present day by studying human behavior. The programs were held in Chicago, Cleveland, the Denver area, Los Angeles, New England, New York, and the San Francisco/Bay Area. Included are two printed notices about the course listings; one is addressed to the Board Members.

Busse's holograph translation of sections from Alois Eduard Kornmuller's "Einfuhrung in die klinische Elektrenkephalographie," whose focus is electroencephalography. Accompanied by an 11-page typescript of holograph translation. Both were received as part of Busse's gift of a copy of Kornmuller's book to the History of Medicine Collections. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Cataloged from item. Collection comprises a diary (124 pgs.) maintained by an unidentified woman who was educated, knowledgeable about sailing, and quite religious, during her voyages and travels around the northern coast of Scotland to cities in Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, France, and Spain.

Collection consists of approximately 400 labels taken from packages of cheese and cheese spreads. Brands represented include Aplin & Barrett, Bel, Cow & Gate, Kraft, Libby, Plumrose, St. Ivel (Unigate, later Uniq), Swift, Surrey, Tolko, Tollose and Wilts. Cheeses originated from a variety of European countries including Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Norway and Sweden. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Eugene and Margaret Triman both served in the United States military during World War II; Eugene was a sailor and was stationed on submarines, and Margaret was a member of the Women's Army Corps. The majority of this collection consists of Eugene's letters to Margaret while the couple was dating and engaged to marry. There are also five photographs of their wedding day, in April 1946, as well as some newspaper clippings about Margaret's WAC service and two booklets on birth control.

Mostly ALS. W.D. Alexander writes on Hawaiian history and refers to Goodhue's book. Drs. Fontoynont, Miyajima, Jeanselme, Montizombert, Nemorin and Anpeville write in reply to Goodhue's requests for information on literature on leprosy in their respective countries. M.F. Obregon writes regarding an appointment. Drs. Lie and Hansen of Bergen writes with reference to the Second International Leprosy Congress held in 1909. Among the letters is a typed manuscript, with answers to question on leprosy, signed by an unknown person.

The Duke Climate Coalition is a student-run organization founded in 2015. The group focuses on educating Duke's community on climate change and advocating for environmentally sensitive policies and business practices at Duke. The collection consists of research materials, project planning materials, photographs and records related to the organizations fossil fuel divestment campaign.

Collection comprises an pin with the text "American Women's Voluntary Services" on a background of red, white, and blue enamel. The back of the pin is marked "Bastian Brothers Co, Rochester, N.Y."

3 letters (ALS) and a postcard, signed. Correspondence relates to their work with toxoids, inactivated toxins which retain the property of stimulating antitoxin formation and which are used in immunization.

In this letter (TLS), Abderhalden acknowledges the receipt of a letter, speaks of the general conditions in Germany, and solicits Dr. Strauss's contribution to the "Handbook of methods in biological investigations."

TLS. Refers Goldwater to his book, Non-venereal syphilis, in which he discusses the use of mercury inhalations for the treatment of bejel among Syrian Bedouins, and other practices of Arab medicine.

May be the author Eliza Wilson (Mrs. Robert Wilson) of Kirkdale, Liverpool, England. Entries describe the social life and travel of a British woman living in India with General Craigie, his wife, and daughters. They left England in November 1854, traveled by ship with stops in Egypt, and arrived in Madras in January 1855. The group lived in Madras but journeyed to other cities in southern India, including Bangalore, Mysore, and Vellore. There are references to the Sepoy Rebellion, 1856-1858, before Wilson departed India in 1860.

Harrogate College Union is the alumnae association for Harrogate Ladies' College in Harrogate, England. The Union was established in 1895. Elizabeth Wilhelmina Jones, or M. E. Jones, was headmistress of the school 1898-1935. Collection comprises materials related to a celebration, hosted by the college union in 1959, of Elizabeth Wilhelmina Jones' 90th birthday, along with items related to her memorial the following year.

Resident of New England. Collection comprises a 1-page bill detailing the costs incurred by Elizabeth Parry during childbirth, including charges for a midwife; food and board; sugar, bread, spices, oatmeal and fruit; a "watch on fixed nights" and candles; the child's linen and clothing; two cords of firewood; a fire wood cutter; and two trips to Boston during the lying-in. Also includes the cost of "time spent to go to authority to make complaint of Edward Dix the father of my above[said] child." The bill is signed by Parry, and witnessed by John Phillips, Joseph Lynde, Jonas Bond, and Edward Emerson.

Eliza Beckwith appears to have been a student in 1860 at an unidentified normal college (a school created to train high school graduates to be teachers) in an English-speaking country, most likely Great Britain, Canada, or the United States. The collection consists of a single commonplace book with the name Eliza Beckwith or perhaps Eliza Beckwith Burton on the front cover. Twenty manuscript pages contain 30 poems and short phrases collected from college acquaintances, some with titles such as The Enquiry, Happiness, Remember Me, Prudent Simplicity, The Old and New Year, Friendship, and The Rights of Woman. A few of the poems are extracts taken from Tennyson and Wordsworth, but most appear to be original pieces from fellow students including Annie Kemball, Martha Ardley, Louisa Gillingham, Annie Morris, Helen Taylor, and Lizzie Capez. A few pieces are signed and dated College 1860, Christmas 1860, or Normal College.

Manuscript pages from a proposed, but never published second and revised edition of North's book, "A treatise on a malignant epidemic, commonly called spotted fever". Available are photographs of the title page of North's own copy of the book, which bears marginal notes in his hand. Reader is referred to the article by Pleadwell, "A new view of Elisha North ... ", in Annals of medical history, 6 (1924). The manuscript and North's copy form the basis of this essay.

ALS. Informs Childs, Philadelphia publisher, that he leaves his present host, the New York merchant and philanthropist Henry Grinnell, for Europe in a fortnight in a last attempt to recover his health.

Eleanor King, possibly of Liverpool, England. Commonplace book, 13 pages; 31 cm x 19 cm, dated 1781-1784, kept by Eleanor King. The book contains poems--some original, others attributed--interspersed with cooking and medicinal recipes. King typically signs her name and gives the dates with each entry. Recipes range from "Raison Wine," to "Sherif Cake," to her "Elixer of Health." One poem, possibly written by King, is devoted to the pleasures of breastfeeding and is titled: "On Seeing a Lady Nursing her own Child." The commonplace book once included several other pages which were cut away from the book at an early date.

Autograph document, signed. A deposition presented to a grand jury, in which Lawrence accuses his servant, Peter Tom, of theft of opium and other patent medicines, and a Dr. Heerman of selling the stolen goods.

ALS from Morse relating to his collection of Japanese pottery. Attached is an undated newspaper clipping regarding a lecture delivered by Morse at the Lowell Institute. Morse was professor of zoology at the Imperial University, Tokyo, between 1877-1880.
