Abstract Or Scope: Hannah Hutchinson married Samuel Mather in 1731; the couple settled in Boston, Mass. She died in 1781 (some sources have the death date 1752) and Samuel died in 1779. Collection comprises a request written by Hannah Hutchinson Matter on 3 April 1858 to Edward Hutchinson, asking him to fulfill the pecuniary bequest made to her by his father and to give the sum (4 pounds) to her son, Samuel Mather, Junior. The back of the request contains Samuel's note, dated 3 May 1858, stating that he received the money.

Abstract Or Scope: This collection documents the case of Joan Little, an African-American woman from Eastern North Carolina who was tried for the capital offense of first-degree murder when she killed a jailer who had sexually assaulted her. She was aquitted of this charge, and her story became a flash point for women's rights, prisoner's rights, and the issue of racism in the criminal justice system. The collection contains of materials used by Southern Poverty Law Center counsel and documentary filmmaker Morris Dees, including exhibits for the defense and official court documents. Also included is original poetry written by Little while incarcerated, print media clippings, and an original screenplay, "Free Joann Little."

Metamorphic tobacco trade cards, approximately 1868-1880s

Abstract Or Scope: Collection consists of 12 metamorphic tobacco and cigarette cards. Most of the cards were printed by Donaldson Brothers of New York or Calvert Lithography of Detroit. Cards were produced by a number of American tobacco companies, including C.A. Jackson, E.H. Pogue, Duke, and W.T. Blackwell. Images on the cards include advertisements for the tobacco companies and local retailers; caricatures of politicians including Benjamin Butler, Bismarck, George Washington, Samuel Tilden, and U.S. Grant. Cards also feature jingles and poems along with depictions of racial and ethnic stereotypes. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Abstract Or Scope: The Memory Project Oral History collection comprises digital video recordings and written supporting documentation of interviews spanning 2009 to 2016. The interviews were conducted by filmmakers associated with the Work Station, a film studio run by Wu Wenguang in Caochangdi, Beijing, China. Memory Project interviews were conducted with Chinese people about mid-20th century rural life, primarily experiences during the Great Famine (1958-1961), but also the Land Reform and Collectivization (1949-1953), the Great Leap Forward (1958-1960), the Four Cleanups Movement (1964), and the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Wu's studio in suburban Beijing, known as the Work Station, is the home for this project. More than 150 young filmmakers have joined the project, and since 2010 they have visited 246 villages in 20 provinces and interviewed more than 1,100 elderly villagers. These filmmakers, many of whom returned to their families' rural hometowns, developed new intergenerational relationships with elderly relatives. During the process of interviewing the villagers, they reconciled the official history taught in schools with each family's experiences.

Wu Dayu (b. 1924) is a resident of Liudian Village, Madian, Woyang, Anhui Province. Wu recollects that in 1960, some people collapsed on the road and died of hunger. If people worked slowly or stole food, they would get beaten up. For her kids, Wu once walked miles to digged for frozen sweet potatoes. Still, two of her children died of hunger.

Several of the stereographic photographs are also portraits, most often showing Maxwell positioned within displays of her taxidermy birds and mammals; however, the majority of the stereographs depict her displays at the Centennial Exhibition and at the Rocky Mountain Museum in Boulder. The clipping describes the birds and mammals represented at her Centennial Exhibition display and provides a review of her work.

This is the personal stationary of Joseph Léopold Sigisbert (Hugo) who was the father of Victor Hugo. The header features a French Republic crest between two words: Liberté and Egalité. This is a handwritten note in black ink on letterhead from the 1st Permanent War Council of the 17th Military Division for the French Government. Written during the French Revolution, the document is dated as 26 Messidor, l'an 6 (July 14th, 1798).

Abstract Or Scope: Printed form in German language for proof of smallpox vaccination, filled out in manuscript hand with the name of the patient, a P[?] Maurer, 49 years of age, and the date of vaccination, August 12, 1872, and the date when the vaccination was declared successful and the certificate signed by the physician, a Professor Zelinder, August 20, 1872. The entry for the location may be Balaton, Hungary. In 1872 there was a very severe smallpox outbreak in England; in 1874, a compulsory vaccination law went into effect in Germany. The certificate bears a decorative border and a small shield. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Campaign to Free Mrs. Rosa Lee Ingram collection, 1954 February-May

Abstract Or Scope: The collection includes three publications related to the campaign to free Mrs. Rosa Lee Ingram, an African American sharecropper and widowed mother of twelve in southwest Georgia, along with two of her sons, Wallace and Sammie Lee Ingram, who were serving life sentences for the 1947 death of their white sharecropper neighbor, John Ethron Stratford. The handling of the case aroused concern about racial injustice in the southern judicial system which led to the formation of a national campaign for clemency. Through the efforts of the African American community, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the communist-influenced Civil Rights Congress (CRC), the Ingrams' original death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment in 1948 and eventual release in 1959. The three items in the collection were published in 1954, when publicity for the case was largely coordinated by the Women's Committee for Equal Justice, an off-shoot of the CRC headed by the civil rights activist, Mary Church Terrell. Although not explicitly dated, two items were clearly issued in early May: A broadside from the Women's Committee for Equal Justice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a four page newsletter from the New York headquarters of the Women's Committee for Equal Justice designed to raise support for the May 9th and 10th Mother's Day crusade for the freedom of Mrs. Rosa Lee Ingram and her sons. The earliest item is a four page newsletter published in February 1954 by the Pennsylvania Civil Rights Congress, Let Freedom Ring, volume 1, number 3. The cover page includes an article titled Goal for '54: Free Mrs. Ingram that recounts earlier efforts in the fight to free Mrs. Ingram and her sons and announces future campaign activities including plans to demand support from the Attorney General, Herbert Brownell, and the Secretary of the United Nations.

Abstract Or Scope: Roundell Tristram Toke (1896-1957) was a British Army officer from Folkestone, England who was stationed in China during the Boxer Rebellion, and in Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. Collection comprises diaries and photographs documenting in detail his military service in China and Japan during the Boxer Rebellion, 1900, and Russo-Japanese War, 1905 to 1907. The first diary is set in China; the other three in Japan. All four contain daily descriptions of weather, social and administrative activities, military engagements, rations, medical training, diplomacy, and other details, with some sketches of formations and drill patterns. The diaries are accompanied by 146 photographs from China and Japan. The earlier group shows officers and soldiers from the eight allied nations, ruins and battle sites, and other scenes in Tianjin and Beijing following the Boxer Rebellion, 1900; later images show civilians and street life; military camps; drills; equipment; engagements; Russian war prisoners and their camps; towns; landscapes; harbors; and a few social gatherings. The collection also includes Toke's leather cigar case, inscribed on the inside with his postings with dates, beginning with Weihai, China, 1900.

One bound commercial diary filled with almost daily entries by Toke, detailing his service in China during the Boxer Rebellion. The life of an officer at the camp Wei-hai-wei included much dining, sightseeing, and playing sports, until Chinese anti-colonial militias began their violent uprising. In March 1900, Toke writes of dispersing unlawful assemblies in neighboring villages, followed by battles to put down the rebellion, and scenes of destruction, with dead and wounded soldiers as well as many civilians.

Two bound commercial diaries, filled with almost daily entries recounting Toke's service as an attaché to the British Embassy in Tokyo. Besides numerous entries concerning the weather, his travel within Japan, his dining companions (including notable government officials and nobility), and living arrangements, he also includes some insights into military matters, including details relating to the Battle of Mukden, although does not appear to have seen any action himself.

Disbound but with the original upper wrapper present, this diary of approximately 212 pages covers a brief period following the Russo-Japanese War in which Toke was attached to the 1st Regiment of Imperial Guard at Takehashi Barracks. His detailed observations concern the military maneuvers and exercises of the regiment, as well as their outfitting, arms, daily rations, and organization. He also comments on social gatherings and individuals he meets.

Abstract Or Scope: Collection comprises a handwritten copy of the Gazette (11 pgs, handstitched), plus an envelope. The Gazette contained a personal and detailed account of the marriage of Charlotte Elizabeth Octavia Collinson (1817-1850) to Charles Stansfield Rawson (1812-1863). The writer of the account was unidentified, but was probably one of Collinson's sisters. There are sections on the bridesmaids, ceremony, cake, wedding breakfast, and other celebrations, as well as desciptions of various family members. Rawson lived at Nether Wasdale, Cumberland, and married Charlotte at Boldon Church on Feb. 18, 1840. Later, two of their sons went to Queensland, where they made a fortune in ranching and pioneered the settlement of Mckay. The envelope, postmarked 1895, is illustrated and addressed to E. Rawson, Imperial Hotel, Brisbane, Queensland.

There are views of parades, athletic teams, a Baptist group, a first-grade Harlem classroom, and the interior of Van Der Zee's studio, as well as fictionalized settings and poses conveying hopes, dreams, and humorous situations. Subjects include an elegant couple in raccoon coats, a soldier, a female impersonator, a funerary portrait of a man in an open casket, Black Hebrews, Black Cross nurses, Marcus Garvey in regalia during a parade, entrepreneurs Madam C.J. Walker and her daughter A'Lelia, boxer Jack Johnson, and entertainer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Included is a self-portrait of the photographer playing a violin, circa 1930. An early portrait of Van Der Zee's first wife and daughter was taken around 1908, in Lenox, Massachusetts, his birthplace. Average print size is roughly 10 3/4 x 12 inches. Almost all are exhibit prints created mostly in the 1980s from original negatives. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

Abstract Or Scope: .Admittance, matriculation, and "Order of Lecture" cards are from a number of medical students from 1811-1880 in the University of Pennsylvania, Jefferson Medical College, Long Island College Hospital (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Harvard University Medical School, Philadelphia School of Anatomy, New Hampshire Medical Institution, Berkshire Medical Institution, and St. Bartholomew's Hospital (London, England). They contain the autographs of the most eminent professors of the day: i.e., Samuel Gross, Franklin Bache, Benjamin Rush, Austin Flint, Samuel Jackson, S. Weir Mitchell, J. K. Mitchell, Charles D. and James A Meigs, John Barclay Biddle, et al. The St. Bartholomew's Hospital card is signed by Ludford Harvey, John P. Vicent, and John Abernethy, the latter (1764-1831) being an eminent English surgeon and founder of the Medical School of St Bartholomew's. The "Order of Lecture" cards from Jefferson Medical College and the University of Pennsylvania list curricula, faculty and their residences, schedules of lectures and texts.Admittance cards, 1850-1853, are for courses at the Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. They include two matriculation cards for William D. Watson of Chatham County, N. C., dated Nov., 1850, and Oct., 1852, and an examination card Oct., 1852-1853, which is signed by Dr. S. Weir Mitchell as professor of Anatomy, Surgery and Physiology. Dr. Watson returned to Chatham County after his graduation. His house was destroyed during the Civil War. The portion of his medical library saved and stored in a neighboring attic eventually was placed in the historical Collection of the library of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.

Abstract Or Scope: Collection comprises 176 Turkish political posters, including three duplicates. There are seven series of posters: Korean War, NATO, Historical significance, Commemoration of Ottoman historical figures, Republican-era historical figures, Leftist, and Presidency of the Turkish Republic. In the first, sixteen posters extoll the achievements of the Turkish Armed Forces command or Turkish Brigade in the Korean War between November 1950 and July 1953. In the second series, one poster represents Turkey's relationship to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and another reflects the naval and air force maneuvers of NATO's Southern Command, Greece, and Turkey at Weld Fast in 1953. The third series includes 27 posters that celebrate events of historic national significance and depict international political figures together with Turkish leaders. The fourth series includes four posters that commemorate Ottoman historical figures, including admiral Barbaros Hayrettin, and sultans Mehmet V, Mehmed II, and Selim I. The fifth series includes 14 posters of Repulican-era historical figures, including portraits of World War II generals and political figures. The sixth series contains 63 leftist political posters with political slogans, as well as calls for meetings and demonstrations; most of them date from the second half of the 1970's. The seventh series contains 50 posters issued by the Presidency of the Turkish Republic regarding the failed coup attempt of 15 July 2016.

Sixteen posters, including 2 duplicates, extoll the achievements of the Turkish Armed Forces command or Turkish Brigade in the Korean War between November 1950 and July 1953. These posters show battle scenes and portraits of Brigadier General Tahzin Yazıcı and assistant Brigade commander Celâl Dora. Another shows an American officer, General Walker, decorating Yazıcı with the Silver Star. Ten of these posters are signed by graphic artists, including M. Işık, Cemal Baki, M. Baki, and Mehmet Tekdal; the remainder are unsigned.

Abstract Or Scope: Collection comprises a bill of indictment for perjury against "Blender," an African-American woman who allegedly falsely accused a man of rape. Contains a list of 10 witnesses in the case, including seven women. In 1807 Blender accused Jonas Fairlamb of raping her, resulting in pregnancy. The indictment also mentions the alleged crime of "bastardy," but those words have been crossed out. Blender appeared before the justice of the peace for Delaware County, Pennsylvania, but now, some months later, it appears that she perjured herself. The indictment contains a description of the alleged sexual assault, and lists the contradictions in Blender's account of the rape and the timeline of events. Blender is charged with committing "wilfull & corrupt perjury to the great displeasure of Almighty God." The docketing on the bill lists the foreman of the jury as Thomas Smith, and notes that the defendant, having been arraigned, pleads "non cul[pabilis]," or not guilty. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Abstract Or Scope: Collection contains three volumes relating to the life and political career of George Meade Bowers, Congressional member for West Virginia, 1916-1923: a scrapbook (1898-1914) of clippings and a few other items concerning the United States Fish Commission, fish culture, the fishing industry, and politics and elections in West Virginia, with a few items relating to the Bowers family; a scrapbook of congratulatory telegrams sent after Bowers's 1916 election to Congress; and a photograph album from a 1917 visit to Hawaii by a congressional delegation, which included Bowers, containing gelatin silver photographs with views from the islands of Hawaii, Oahu, and Kauai, photographs of officials and Japanese and Hawaiian inhabitants, and an image of Queen Liliuokalani lying in state following her death November 11, 1917.
