Harriet Sanderson Stewart diaries, 1906-1911

Abstract Or Scope: Traveler, diarist, daughter of Reverend Francis Stewart. Three diaries written by affluent British woman traveling with her father. Ms. Stewart recorded her impressions of people and events aboard ships as well as describing accomodations, entertainments, plants, and ways of life in the places she visited. In "Westward Wanderings, 1906-1907" (2 v.), she described her travels in the West Indies, Canada, and the United States (New York City, Boston, and Washington D.C.). Volume I includes a description of the 1907 earthquake in Jamaica. In both volumes Ms. Stewart wrote of her impressions of Black West Indians and her interactions with them. "Eastern Impressions, 1907-1908" (2 v.) documents her journey through Sri Lanka, India, Burma, and North Africa. A third diary, "Scenes from Southern Spain" (1 v.), was written during 1911. Entries are illustrated with numerous watercolors and photographs (including cyanotypes and albumen prints) by Stewart, as well as clippings, postcards, maps, menus, and dried flora.

Abstract Or Scope: Collection comprises correspondence, legal papers, business records, bills and receipts, photographs, writings, recipes, clippings, and other items relating to the life and career of businessman M.C. (Marshall Clayton) Stoner, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and three generations of the Brewer and Stoner families from Pennsylvania and Maryland. Includes many speeches by George W. Brewer, a lawyer and senator in the Pennsylvania legislature, 1857-1859, and M.C. Stoner's father-in-law. Much of the correspondence and other items relate to coal mining and specifically to M.C. Stoner's Rocky Ridge Mining Company. There are also letters written to Stoner's daughter, Louise, chiefly from male friends.

Abstract Or Scope: The Du Bois family and the related Gomer family identified as African Americans of mixed-race descent and were based in Massachusetts and Iowa. Collection consists of eleven albumen and early gelatin silver photographs dating from the early 1860s to the early 1910s, featuring portraits of Alfred Du Bois (circa 1833-?), father of African American author, educator, and activist W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963); Nina Gomer Du Bois (circa 1870-1950), wife of W.E.B. Du Bois; and Nina Yolande Du Bois (1900 or 1901-1961), daughter of W.E.B. and Nina Du Bois. Other images are of unidentified women and children, some African American and some of indeterminate race. There are also two group photos: an elementary school class that includes W.E.B. Du Bois as a child; and one of the Carnegie Hall Conference "Committee of Twelve," all African American men, with Booker T. Washington and other men and women. Abstract Or Scope: Collection comprises 176 Turkish political posters, including three duplicates. There are seven series of posters: Korean War, NATO, Historical significance, Commemoration of Ottoman historical figures, Republican-era historical figures, Leftist, and Presidency of the Turkish Republic. In the first, sixteen posters extoll the achievements of the Turkish Armed Forces command or Turkish Brigade in the Korean War between November 1950 and July 1953. In the second series, one poster represents Turkey's relationship to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and another reflects the naval and air force maneuvers of NATO's Southern Command, Greece, and Turkey at Weld Fast in 1953. The third series includes 27 posters that celebrate events of historic national significance and depict international political figures together with Turkish leaders. The fourth series includes four posters that commemorate Ottoman historical figures, including admiral Barbaros Hayrettin, and sultans Mehmet V, Mehmed II, and Selim I. The fifth series includes 14 posters of Repulican-era historical figures, including portraits of World War II generals and political figures. The sixth series contains 63 leftist political posters with political slogans, as well as calls for meetings and demonstrations; most of them date from the second half of the 1970's. The seventh series contains 50 posters issued by the Presidency of the Turkish Republic regarding the failed coup attempt of 15 July 2016.

Sixteen posters, including 2 duplicates, extoll the achievements of the Turkish Armed Forces command or Turkish Brigade in the Korean War between November 1950 and July 1953. These posters show battle scenes and portraits of Brigadier General Tahzin Yazıcı and assistant Brigade commander Celâl Dora. Another shows an American officer, General Walker, decorating Yazıcı with the Silver Star. Ten of these posters are signed by graphic artists, including M. Işık, Cemal Baki, M. Baki, and Mehmet Tekdal; the remainder are unsigned.

Abstract Or Scope: Roy C. Trimiar was an African-American U.S. Army veteran, who served as a private in the Q.M. Det. SC-CASC, Colored, and the Ser. Det. SC-4th, Colored, 1942-1943. He was born in Homer, Georgia and lived much of his life in Cooleemee, North Carolina. He was married to Lola Wood Trimiar (1909-1996). Collection primarily includes letters from Trimiar to his wife in Cooleemee and Mocksville, NC (89 items). The letters begin with their courtship (1939) in Cooleemee, but mainly date from Trimiar's service in the U.S. Army Colored Troops stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., and Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.

Abstract Or Scope: John Willis created these six composite color images to articulate and consider the connections between photographic portraits taken by the Khmer Rouge of young people in Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Penh, where an estimated 14,000-20,000 victims were executed from about 1975-1979, and images of deteriorating mural frescoes at the Emperor's Palace, also in Phnom Penh. The portraits are said to be of prison workers, and were exhibited in 2008 at the prison, now a genocide museum. Five of the historical photographs are portraits; the sixth shows a group of what appears to be Khmer Rouge soldiers in uniform. The photographer's images show that the original photographs on exhibit were defaced with graffiti and other marks by visitors to the museum. The neglected Emperor's Palace frescoes, whose images flank the victim's portraits in Willis' work, depict scenes from the Cambodian epic poem, the Reamker, which speaks to human issues of love, revenge, loyalty, and trust. The color inkjet prints were created from 2009 to 2011. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Abstract Or Scope: Collection comprises a handwritten copy of the Gazette (11 pgs, handstitched), plus an envelope. The Gazette contained a personal and detailed account of the marriage of Charlotte Elizabeth Octavia Collinson (1817-1850) to Charles Stansfield Rawson (1812-1863). The writer of the account was unidentified, but was probably one of Collinson's sisters. There are sections on the bridesmaids, ceremony, cake, wedding breakfast, and other celebrations, as well as desciptions of various family members. Rawson lived at Nether Wasdale, Cumberland, and married Charlotte at Boldon Church on Feb. 18, 1840. Later, two of their sons went to Queensland, where they made a fortune in ranching and pioneered the settlement of Mckay. The envelope, postmarked 1895, is illustrated and addressed to E. Rawson, Imperial Hotel, Brisbane, Queensland.

Abstract Or Scope: Roundell Tristram Toke (1896-1957) was a British Army officer from Folkestone, England who was stationed in China during the Boxer Rebellion, and in Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. Collection comprises diaries and photographs documenting in detail his military service in China and Japan during the Boxer Rebellion, 1900, and Russo-Japanese War, 1905 to 1907. The first diary is set in China; the other three in Japan. All four contain daily descriptions of weather, social and administrative activities, military engagements, rations, medical training, diplomacy, and other details, with some sketches of formations and drill patterns. The diaries are accompanied by 146 photographs from China and Japan. The earlier group shows officers and soldiers from the eight allied nations, ruins and battle sites, and other scenes in Tianjin and Beijing following the Boxer Rebellion, 1900; later images show civilians and street life; military camps; drills; equipment; engagements; Russian war prisoners and their camps; towns; landscapes; harbors; and a few social gatherings. The collection also includes Toke's leather cigar case, inscribed on the inside with his postings with dates, beginning with Weihai, China, 1900.

One bound commercial diary filled with almost daily entries by Toke, detailing his service in China during the Boxer Rebellion. The life of an officer at the camp Wei-hai-wei included much dining, sightseeing, and playing sports, until Chinese anti-colonial militias began their violent uprising. In March 1900, Toke writes of dispersing unlawful assemblies in neighboring villages, followed by battles to put down the rebellion, and scenes of destruction, with dead and wounded soldiers as well as many civilians.

Two bound commercial diaries, filled with almost daily entries recounting Toke's service as an attaché to the British Embassy in Tokyo. Besides numerous entries concerning the weather, his travel within Japan, his dining companions (including notable government officials and nobility), and living arrangements, he also includes some insights into military matters, including details relating to the Battle of Mukden, although does not appear to have seen any action himself.

Disbound but with the original upper wrapper present, this diary of approximately 212 pages covers a brief period following the Russo-Japanese War in which Toke was attached to the 1st Regiment of Imperial Guard at Takehashi Barracks. His detailed observations concern the military maneuvers and exercises of the regiment, as well as their outfitting, arms, daily rations, and organization. He also comments on social gatherings and individuals he meets.

They contain the autographs of the most eminent professors of the day: i.e., Samuel Gross, Franklin Bache, Benjamin Rush, Austin Flint, Samuel Jackson, S. Weir Mitchell, J. K. Mitchell, Charles D. and James A Meigs, John Barclay Biddle, et al. The St. Bartholomew's Hospital card is signed by Ludford Harvey, John P. Vicent, and John Abernethy, the latter (1764-1831) being an eminent English surgeon and founder of the Medical School of St Bartholomew's. The "Order of Lecture" cards from Jefferson Medical College and the University of Pennsylvania list curricula, faculty and their residences, schedules of lectures and texts.Admittance cards, 1850-1853, are for courses at the Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. They include two matriculation cards for William D. Watson of Chatham County, N. C., dated Nov., 1850, and Oct., 1852, and an examination card Oct., 1852-1853, which is signed by Dr. S. Weir Mitchell as professor of Anatomy, Surgery and Physiology. Dr. Watson returned to Chatham County after his graduation. His house was destroyed during the Civil War. The portion of his medical library saved and stored in a neighboring attic eventually was placed in the historical Collection of the library of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.

Abstract Or Scope: Collection comprises 42 photographs taken by James Van Der Zee, known for his portraits and documentation of daily life in Harlem, N.Y., especially during the Harlem Renaissance (1920s-1930s). There are views of parades, athletic teams, a Baptist group, a first-grade Harlem classroom, and the interior of Van Der Zee's studio, as well as fictionalized settings and poses conveying hopes, dreams, and humorous situations. Subjects include an elegant couple in raccoon coats, a soldier, a female impersonator, a funerary portrait of a man in an open casket, Black Hebrews, Black Cross nurses, Marcus Garvey in regalia during a parade, entrepreneurs Madam C.J. Walker and her daughter A'Lelia, boxer Jack Johnson, and entertainer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Included is a self-portrait of the photographer playing a violin, circa 1930. An early portrait of Van Der Zee's first wife and daughter was taken around 1908, in Lenox, Massachusetts, his birthplace. Average print size is roughly 10 3/4 x 12 inches. Almost all are exhibit prints created mostly in the 1980s from original negatives. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

Abstract Or Scope: The Women's Guild of Arts was founded in England in 1907 by textile designer and jeweller May Morris, and grew to about 60 members. The organization offered female artists an alternative to the Art Workers' Guild, the artists' association established in 1884 to encourage excellence in the fine and applied arts, and from which women were excluded until the 1960s. Collection comprises primarily 81 letters from 29 members of the Women's Guild of Arts between 1902 and 1949. There are 7 additional documents, including draft resolutions, certificates, lists, and notes.

Entries describe the social life and travel of a British woman living in India with General Craigie, his wife, and daughters. They left England in November 1854, traveled by ship with stops in Egypt, and arrived in Madras in January 1855. The group lived in Madras but journeyed to other cities in southern India, including Bangalore, Mysore, and Vellore. There are references to the Sepoy Rebellion, 1856-1858, before Wilson departed India in 1860.

Abstract Or Scope: Collection comprises a scrapbook (96 pages) featuring primarily newspaper and magazine clippings that document the leaders, activists, actions and activities of the Women's Social and Political Union between 1908 and 1917. The unidentified compiler was likely a member of the organization, for she included handwritten labels identifying unnamed participants and often provided handwritten commentary on actions taken or the treatment of women imprisoned. In several cases, she was also able to obtain autographs of individual suffragists. Events documented include the 1913 Suffrage Pilgrimage, the memorial for Emily Wilding Davison, Rosa May Billinghurst, the Coronation procession, and the suffragist's bombing of Westminster Abbey. Other topics include what men did to get the vote; voting as a right; forcible feedings and other injuries the women sustained; marches, speeches, and gatherings of support; the work of the Pankhursts; women's activities in support of the war in Europe; the organization's offices; and international supporters of women's suffrage. Includes several items laid-in.

Abstract Or Scope: In 1990, Bridget Booher began research on Duke alum, Sheldon Robert Harte, for a final paper for her history course. Harte worked as a secretary and security guard for Leon Trotsky. Harte was killed following a raid of the Trotsky compound in 1940. This collection contains Booher's research materials including correspondence from alumni with recollections of Harte, Booher's notes, and copies of Harte's submissions to the literary magazine, The Archive.
