Charis Books and More, founded in 1974 in Atlanta, Ga., is the oldest feminist bookstore in the Southeast. Charis Circle is a non-profit organization founded in July 1996 that furthers the mission of the bookstore by offering free educational and cultural events and programs to the community. This collection documents the daily operation, programs, and mission of Charis Books and More and Charis Circle, and the interrelated nature of these two organizations. The financial records include those for Charis Books and More and Charis Circle. The ephemera include bookstore flyers and announcements, t-shirts, banners, framed posters, and book bags. There are also board minutes, log books, instructions, and reports for the bookstore, records for community programs (Sister Girls and Young Writers); poetry workshop materials for "Leaving Home, Becoming Home"; 2,500 photographs; and some digital materials. Mark Danner is a writer, journalist, and professor at the University of California at Berkeley. His work covers politics and foreign affairs, with a focus on war and conflict. The Mark Danner Papers date from 1970 to 2004 and focus predominately on Danner's coverage of Haiti during the period of unrest that followed President Jean-Claude ("Baby Doc") Duvalier's exile in 1986. Additional materials document Danner's interest in the Balkan Wars during the 1990's and preliminary research on the El Mozote massacre in El Salvador. These materials include research notes, travel information, newspaper clippings, and VHS tapes.

The Duplex Advertising Company. Billboard Images and Records spans the period 1964-1993 and documents the outdoor advertising work of this company in the central Texas area, primarily through photographs, negatives and slides of billboards. Many of the images are in color. A large number of the images are of national campaigns advertised in central Texas, as well as billboards, signs and posters of local Texas business services. In addition, a handful of articles written by R. V. Miller, Jr. for a number of publications, as well as other printed material and miscellaneous items from the Duplex Advertising Company, are present. Some of these articles, along with the images themselves, provide examples of commercial art and design in the outdoor advertising arena. The collection includes outdoor advertising images from national clients such as Kentucky Fried Chicken, Chevrolet, Coca Cola, Coors, Wendy's, Hardee's, and Taco Bell, and Texas clients such as Lone Star and Pearl beers.

The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Thomas Sutton was an executive in charge of JWT's international operations during the 1960s-1970s. The Thomas Sutton Papers span the years 1965-1975 and document Sutton's career, especially his role in JWT's international expansion and the establishment of global advertising markets. The papers provide insight into JWT's international financial matters--budgets, salary structure, stock incentive plans and market shares--as well as personnel policies, client relations, product launches, television advertising projects and marketing research and strategies, seen from the perspective of Sutton's position as JWT chief executive for international operations. The papers also contain marketing plans, evaluations and reports for a number of JWT's international offices, that provide a detailed glimpse into JWT's operations within the respective countries' economic and socio-political contexts. Undergraduate Faculty Council records, 1952 - 1972

Formed in 1952, the Undergraduate Faculty Council (UFC) was responsible for the governance of undergraduate education at Duke University. The Undergraduate Faculty Council of Arts and Sciences succeeded the UFC in October 1971, when undergraduate education in engineering and nursing formed separate governing bodies. Collection includes minutes, memoranda, correspondence, questionnaires, reports of standing and ad hoc committees, and other papers pertaining to faculty oversight of undergraduate education. The bulk of the material consists of the records of the Subcommittee on Curriculum, a part of the Committee on Undergraduate Instruction. Other committees include Honors, Program II, the Faculty Advisory System, Residential Life, Study Abroad, Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid, and Academic Standards. One of the major accomplishments of the UFC was a report called "Varieties of Learning Experience," or the Krueger Report (1968), which led to major changes in the undergraduate course of study known as the "new curriculum." The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Don Johnston held many positions at JWT, beginning his career as a trainee in the Detroit mailroom and retiring as CEO and President. The Don Johnston Papers span the years 1964-1996 and document his career in various positions with JWT. The collection includes international and domestic inter-office correspondence, personal and administrative files, management manuals, presentations, speeches, budgets, billings and profit reports, and video-cassettes that relate to planning for JWT projects, committee meetings, marketing research, contracts with clients, management directives, and JWT's corporate mission and philosophy. The papers also touch on Joseph O'Donnell's attempted hostile takeover of the JWT Group, and the purchase of JWT by the WPP Group.     The Milo Guthrie Papers consist mainly of periodicals and printed materials produced by American politically left organizations and document a range of issues including civil rights, feminism, environmental defense, nuclear freeze and disarmament, gay and lesbian rights, Latin American and Puerto Rican politics, labor issues, and various political parties and candidates, particularly the Socialist Party. Included is a small amount of original material, primarily correspondence with members of various organizations concerning support for issues and activities. Much of this is directly related to the political campaigns of independent party candidates as well as Guthrie's own political campaigns in Tennessee in 1982 and 1984.

The Alianza Civica folders include citizen guides to voting and manuals for poll observers. One set of folders houses extensive publications and documents from the offices of the Mexican Instituto Federal Electoral (IFE), including a full-length report on the 1994 elections. A set of files contains background readings, preparations, and reports from a WOLA delegation trip to Mexico at the end of 1994; the final report from the delegation on the 1994 Mexican elections (Jan. 1995) is included.     African-American family based in Greensboro (Guildford Co.), North Carolina. Waldo C. Falkener served on the Greensboro City Council from 1959-1963. His wife, Margaret, was also politically active. The collection primarily documents the political career of Waldo C. Falkener, and comprises minutes and reports from Greensboro City Council meetings. There are also materials from his campaigns for office and items that document his successes as a council member. In addition, there are documents relating to other family members, including photographs, news articles, correspondence, and deeds. Hans Ihlefeld was financial manager and director of JWT's branch offices in Frankfurt, Vienna and Zurich in the 1960s and 1970s. The Hans Ihlefeld Papers document Ihlefeld's tenure as financial manager and director of the Frankfurt, Vienna, and Zurich offices of JWT, where he oversaw the expansion of the agency with regard to number of clients, subsidiaries, and financial volume. The collection includes correspondence, telexes and telegrams, memoranda, tables of results, charts and graphs, client and account lists, profit plans, computer printouts, invoices and receipts, contracts, clippings, articles and other printed material.         Radio Haïti-Inter was Haiti's first and most prominent independent radio station from the early 1970s until 2003. Under the direction of Jean Léopold Dominique and Michèle Montas, Radio Haiti was a voice of social change and democracy, speaking out against oppression and impunity while advocating for human rights and celebrating Haitian culture and heritage. The Radio Haiti papers contain mainly the station's on-air scripts and research materials covering a wide variety of subjects.                 Collection consists of research materials, correspondence, writings, clippings and other printed materials, and a few photographs, mainly from the latter half of Gohdes's career. The earliest date (1811) refers to reproductions of original research materials. Correspondence with other American Literature teachers and authors, combined with other materials relating to Gohdes's institutional and organizational affiliations, in particular with Duke University, the Modern Language Association (MLA), and the journal AMERICAN LITERATURE, comprise the most substantive aspects of this collection. They provide insight into American literary scholarship in the early and mid-twentieth century. Noted authors and scholars of the time whose letters and other writings are in the collection include Alexander Blackburn, Oscar Cargill, Lewis Chase, Robert Elias, Norman Foerster, Arthur Rubin, Arthur Quinn, and Upton Sinclair. Original manuscripts by Gohdes, inscribed reprints of writings by his colleagues, and materials relating to many major British and American literary figures, make up the rest of the collection. There is substantial material on Edgar Allen Poe and American humor. The collection primarily provides a record of advertising campaigns Sosna developed as a copy supervisor, creative director, and advertising executive at Gershuny Associates, Leo Burnett, Grant Advertising, Doherty Clifford Steers & Shenfield, Sullivan Stauffer Colwell & Bayles, Norman Craig & Kummel, and J.M. Mathes, from 1948 to 1973; the collection has limited material relating to the specific agencies for which he worked. In addition, the collection documents Sosna's later writings, lectures, and seminars as an independent consultant in retail and supermarket advertising from the 1970s through 2001, including a complete run of the Supermarket Advertising Newsletter (1981-2000) and a copy of his book Dodge #9: How to Never Make a Mistake: Achieving Success in a World That Is Always Looking for Someone to Blame (2001).                     The Duke University Office of Cultural Affairs was created in 1969 as part of the Division of Student Affairs and existed until 1993, when, as part of a reorganization of the Division, it was superceded by the Office of University Life. The Office of Cultural Affairs Records, 1931-2002 (bulk 1958-2002), consist of budgets and financial reports; calendars; contracts; correspondence; meeting minutes; printed materials; black-and-white, color, and 35mm photographs; and videocassettes, audiocassettes, and digital audio tapes. Materials primarily span the years of the OCA's official existence, 1969-1993, but also contain earlier materials about its first director, Ella Fountain Pratt, and later records created by the Office of University Life. Arranged in five series: Subject Files, which provide a broad overview of the OCA's activities, including early correspondence between Duke University and the American Dance Festival, which moved to Duke in 1977; the Chamber Arts Society, a group that promoted chamber music performance in Durham and surrounding areas; the Duke Artists Series, a concert series that began in 1930 and came under the oversight of OCA upon its creation in 1969; the Summer Session, programming for which also became one of the OCA's primary responsibilities; and the Triangle Dance Guild, a group independent of Duke that coordinated with the OCA to promote dance performance on campus and in Durham and surrounding areas from 1976-1984.

                      Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) of Durham, NC records, 1894-1992

                      The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) of Durham was founded in 1920 and served the larger Durham community from the 1920s until the 1970s. The Harriet Tubman branch of the Durham YWCA served the African-American community in particular and, through collaboration with the Central branch, fostered integration in a racically segregated Durham. In the 1970s, the YWCA became the home of the Durham Women's Health Co-op and the Durham Rape Crisis Center, which operated out of the YWCA Women's Center. These organizations were central to reform movements throughout Durham, from women's health and childcare to fair wages and civil rights. The YWCA of Durham records reflect both the administrative history of the YWCA, as well as the programs, projects, social events, and community outreach that formed the backbone of the organization. For example, a series of scrapbooks, put together by Y Teen groups, program participants, and residents of the YWCA's boarding houses captures the strength of the YWCA community. The broader impact of the YWCA is evident in their range of programming, especially the clubs they hosted, from PMS and Single Mothers groups to a "Matrons Club." The YWCA's impact is also reflected in administrative and financial materials that tell the story of the Y's work to serve the people of Durham that needed a safe place to build community for themselves and their families.

Collection contains mainly papers pertaining to his work in the field of education. Prior to his position at Marist College, he taught history in Danville, Va. He was active in the Danville Education Assoc., and became the Virginia Education Association's president. In addition to professional correspondence, there is a great deal of personal correspondence with family and friends much of which relates to his life as a homosexual. Included also are financial papers, printed materials, clippings, addresses, writings (including a draft of his dissertation), and other records. There is some memorabilia from Olson's school days. Included among the volumes are diaries from his youth.

The London office first opened in 1899. Advertising executive Judie Lannon was a marketing research specialist at JWT London and the first woman named a Director in JWT's European region. Collection includes correspondence, articles and clippings, company policy and operations manuals, management training materials, texts of speeches and presentations and other printed materials.                             In 1989, Duke University's Board of Trustees approved the formation of Duke Management Company (DUMAC) as a separate, non-profit support corporation of Duke University. DUMAC recommends investment policy and strategy, seeks and analyzes specific opportunities, and manages ongoing operations and activities. DUMAC operates under a cascading delegation of authority from the Board of Trustees and the DUMAC Board of Directors. Records include materials pertaining to Chief Executive Officer Eugene McDonald's office, including minutes, memoranda outlining proposed agendas, reports on past meetings, draft resolutions, studies, correspondence; staff meetings and memoranda; and long-range planning initiatives. Other major subjects in the collection include investment, athletics, information technology/computing reorganization, land resources, internal audits, policies, budget forecasts, and compensation. A significant part of the collection (found in boxes 3 and 4) includes materials related to discussion in the late 1980s about possible commercial use for part of Duke Forest.

                            Professor of American Literature at Columbia University, 1925-1953. One of the founders of the journal American Literature. Married Clara Gibbs in 1915. The Ralph Leslie Rusk Papers span the years 1782-1981, and chiefly concern Rusk's teaching and research in American Literature, notably the life and letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson. The collection contains research papers and notebooks, and travel diaries related to Rusk's research and teaching; a large series of correspondence covering the years 1912-1963; teaching materials such as lecture notes; clippings files and articles related to Rusk's publications and related activities; many photographs; Rusk, Gibbs, and Emerson family papers; and papers relating to his wife, Clara Gibbs, including a scrapbook and wedding mementoes. Some of the papers and photographs refer to a period of time spent teaching in the Philippines, around 1912-1914. Acquired as part of the Jay B. Hubbell Center for American Literary Historiography.

                                          The President's Advisory Committee on Resources was established by President H. Keith H. Brodie in the summer of 1989 following a recommendation of the Academic Council's Task Force on University Governance. Its predecessor was the University Committee on Resources (1988-1989). PACOR was a broad-based committee, chaired by a faculty member, which advised the President on the allocation of the University's financial, human and physical resources.
