    Board of Trustees records, 1860-ongoing

    The Duke University Board of Trustees has existed since 1924, and grew out of the Trinity College Board of Trustees that existed from 1859 to 1924. The Board is responsible for making major steering decisions in the administration of the school. The Board of Trustees records contain minutes, agendas, correspondence, reports, subject files, trustee handbooks, and other records of the Board and Executive, standing, and ad hoc committees. The minutes include reports, correspondence, resolutions, recommendations for the conferring of degrees, for employment and renewal of employment, and other material. Reports include those made by University officers, Board committees, and outside consultants. The Board's records also include statements of funds and scholarships, investment reports, correspondence, audits, bylaws, petitions from students, and other material. English.

    Gennett Lumber Company records, 1832-1954, bulk 1920-1945

    Lumber company founded in 1902 by Andrew and Nat Gennett, headquartered in Georgia and South Carolina, later in Asheville, N.C. Correspondence, contracts, legal documents, and other records of the Gennett Lumber Co., mostly for the years 1920 to 1945. The two Gennett brothers Nat and Andrew, founders of the company, were part of the effort to establish the South's national forest system. Subjects covered by materials in the collection include Civil War reminiscences, life at Nashville and at Tulane and Vanderbilt universities shortly after the war, the lumber business after 1890, economic conditions in the U.S. after 1900, forest conservation, U.S. politics and foreign relations during World War I, and travel in Europe after the war.

      Henry Horenstein is an American photographer, author, teacher, and filmmaker based in Massachusetts. The collection comprises of approximately 250 black-and-white and color photographic prints selected from his projects, a large series of about 2500 contact sheets, and a few other related materials. Subjects in the project prints series include Horenstein's family and friends; beachgoers in Havana, Cuba; blues and country musicians, the venues where they play, and their fans; the human body in extreme close-ups; horse and stock car racing; burlesque and drag performers; and historic tri-racial communities in Maryland. Together, the prints and contact sheets offer landscapes, street scenes, storefronts, theaters, highways, museums, concerts, bars, nightlife, fairs, and people and animals in Cuba, Dubai, Germany, Los Angeles, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts and all of New England, Missouri, New York, Paris, Tennessee, Texas, Venezuela, and other places. The dominant format is gelatin silver, with some chromogenic and digital work; print sizes range from 8x10 to 20x24 inches. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

      In 1989, Duke University's Board of Trustees approved the formation of Duke Management Company (DUMAC) as a separate, non-profit support corporation of Duke University. DUMAC recommends investment policy and strategy, seeks and analyzes specific opportunities, and manages ongoing operations and activities. DUMAC operates under a cascading delegation of authority from the Board of Trustees and the DUMAC Board of Directors. Records include materials pertaining to Chief Executive Officer Eugene McDonald's office, including minutes, memoranda outlining proposed agendas, reports on past meetings, draft resolutions, studies, correspondence; staff meetings and memoranda; and long-range planning initiatives. Other major subjects in the collection include investment, athletics, information technology/computing reorganization, land resources, internal audits, policies, budget forecasts, and compensation. A significant part of the collection (found in boxes 3 and 4) includes materials related to discussion in the late 1980s about possible commercial use for part of Duke Forest.

One general file consists of status reports on multiple campus building projects in the 1970s, and an estimate and plans for a proposed East Campus Recreation Center written by James A. Ward, University Architect and Director of Physical Planning.

      Frank C. Brown papers, 1899-1943

      Frank Clyde Brown (1870-1943) served as Professor of English at Trinity College and Duke University, and as Comptroller and University Marshall of Duke University. He oversaw the initial construction of Duke University's West Campus and the renovation of East Campus. Brown also founded the North Carolina Folklore Society. The Frank C. Brown Papers contain correspondence, logs, diaries, reports, lantern slides, notebooks, clippings, a scrapbook, and other materials. While some papers relate to teaching and English department activities, the bulk of the collection concerns the construction of Duke University, including correspondence with the Horace Trumbauer architectural firm, builder and manufacturer information, construction progress reports, travel diaries of visits to other campuses, and records of James B. Duke's views on architecture and involvement in campus planning. English.

      John Lakin Brasher (1868-1971) was a white Methodist preacher, evangelist, and leader in the Wesleyan holiness movement. The John Lakin Brasher Papers, 1840s-2005 and undated (bulk 1917-1970), are comprised of church-related and personal correspondence; records of the Iowa Holiness Association; records of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Alabama Conference; religious writings and speeches (including sermons, diaries and manuscripts of published works); printed material (tracts, religious brochures, serials, and hymnals); photographs (including many of camp meetings); transcriptions of tape recordings; legal papers; financial papers; and miscellanea. Most of the material concerns the religious career of John L. Brasher; the Holiness (Santification) movement in the Methodist Church, particularly in Alabama; Holiness education and the administration of the John H. Snead Seminary in Boaz, Alabama and Central Holiness University (later John Fletcher College) in University Park, Iowa; and camp meetings in the South, particularly Alabama, and the Midwest. Includes biographies of clergy and accounts of religious and family life in rural north Alabama. Among correspondents are Joseph P. Owens, F.D. Leete, John Paul, and missionaries in Eygpt, India, China, and Japan. Contains letters and printed material concerning the separation and reunification of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

The Presidents' files contain chiefly correspondence, but programs, membership rosters, and leadership information are also present. Records are arranged alphabetically by file groups.

        Mathematics Department Special Programs records, 1955-1971

        The Mathematics Department at Duke University has sponsored several special programs to train high school and college math teachers. Two of these programs were the Summer Institute in Science and Mathematics and the Retired Officer Program. The Summer Institute in Science and Mathematics, supported by the National Science Foundation, helped secondary school teachers upgrade their skills in the sciences and in math. The Summer Institute trained teachers from 1957-1970. The Retired Officer Program trained retired military personnel to teach mathematics in high school or at the introductory college level. It was also supported by the National Science Foundation and trained teachers from 1958-1967. The collection contains yearbooks, program records, course lists, photographs, government reports, and information about these special programs. English.

        The Howard Scott Papers span the years 1921-1984, although the bulk of materials covers the period from the 1930s to the 1950s, documenting Scott's career in outdoor advertising as a billboard designer and graphic artist. The papers include correspondence (including two letters from Norman Rockwell), newspaper and magazine clippings, awards, and school yearbooks relating to Scott's personal and professional life, in addition to photographs, sketches, lithographs and reprints of outdoor advertising images for clients such as Amoco, Chesterfield (Liggett and Myers), Esso and Mobil oil products, DeSoto, Ford, and Nash automobiles, H.J. Heinz Co., Lever Brothers, Pabst and Schlitz beers, World War II-era programs such as the USO and Navy recruitment, and the 1939-1940 World's Fair.         Dr. Robert Edward Dawson (1918-2008) was an African American ophthalmologist and citizen of Durham (Durham County), North Carolina. This collection primarily documents Dawson's professional and civic responsibilities, both local and national. Materials include meeting agendas and packets; reports; memoranda; correspondence, speeches, and writiings. The collection details Dawson's medical practices, teaching, and board memberships at Lincoln Community Health Center, Lincoln Hospital, and Durham County General Hospital/Durham County Hospital Corporation. It also documents his lengthy and high-level involvement with Meharry Medical College and the National Medical Association, as well as a wide array of other organizations and institutions. Personal materials involve Dawson's military service, memorabilia, his documentation for building his house, and his retirement.The collection also contains black and white and color photographs as well as negatives, mostly of family members.         Bailey Daniel Webb papers, 1845-2003 and undated, bulk 1950s-2003

        Early female graduate of Duke University School of Medicine (M.D., 1946) and pediatrician in private practice in Durham Co., N.C., 1949-1987. The bulk of the papers of Bailey Daniel Webb consist of histories and geneaologies of the Webb and Daniel families of North Carolina, going back to the 18th century. Materials include drafts of historical research, memoirs, clippings, pamphlets, programs, 20th century photographs, and many folders of Webb family correspondence dating from the 20th century. Family history material comprises primarily incoming and outgoing family correspondence and geneaological records (1845-2001) for the Webb, Daniel, Smith, and Stinson families and others. Some of this material was gathered by Bailey Webb's father, J. W. Webb, for his book, Our Webb Kin of Dixie. Also includes Webb's 1941 doctoral thesis and other school records (1925-1933); as well as binders and scrapbooks compiled by Webb detailing her youth and schooling, private practice and hospital career, international trips, Durham history, chiefly in community medicine and governance, and various ancestors and relatives, including N.C. judge Susie Marshall Sharp, James E. Webb, and Stephen Moore. Records containing personally-identifiable medical information, chiefly pediatric case histories, have been separated and are closed to use.

Other items include legal documents, stock reports, tax statements, clippings, school report cards, church programs, pictures, photo albums, and three volumes of memorabilia from the school days of her children.

        Muriel Henderson papers, 1900-2009

        Muriel Henderson (1920-2009) and her husband, Lawrence (Larry), were originally from Tacoma, Washington. They served as missionaries to Angola from 1947 to 1969 and eventually retired to Durham in the 1990s. The bulk of the papers relate Muriel Henderson's personal and family history (for the Woods and Henderson families). She lived with her husband Lawrence (Larry) Henderson in Angola doing missionary work from 1947 to 1969 and the collection includes many materials from this time (including journals and letters). Henderson kept in touch with people from Angola throughout the remainder of her life. The collection also includes many materials documenting her family's life in the early 20th century in the Pacific Northwest (mostly in or around Tacoma, Washington), including photographs, diaries, children's drawings and letters, school report cards, diplomas, letters, recollections (many typed) from family members, and ledgers of household expenses. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

        McFadden Family papers, 1921-2002

        William Allen McFadden (1904-1991), Methodist minister from Indiana, graduate of DePauw, Boston University School of Theology, and Union Seminary in New York. He was a lifelong pacifist and social justice worker. His wife was Glenora English McFadden (1910-2001) and her mother was Estella Graves English (1885-1960). The McFaddens had three children: Margaret McFadden (whose papers are also housed in the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture), Edith Collins, and David McFadden. This collection consists of numerous accessions containing correspondence, audiocassettes, diaries, photographs, yearbooks, printed materials, newspaper clippings, and other miscellaneous materials, largely produced by William and Glenora McFadden during their courtship and marriage, 1921-1991. Also included is correspondence from Glenora McFadden's mother, Estella Graves English, and correspondence from Margaret McFadden, the McFaddens' daughter.         The SPLC Intelligence Project Collection includes printed materials, serials, organizational literature, pamphlets, clippings, catalogs, fliers, and correspondence from a variety of groups monitored by the SPLC and its contacts between the 1980s and 2010. Included within the collection are many groups falling within the SPLC Klanwatch and Militia Watch projects. Organizations represented in this collection typically promoted anti-semitic, white supremacist, racist, separatist, or anti-Communist views and policies. Other organizations promoted Second Amendment rights, right-wing Christian and American nationalism, Y2K and survivalist preparations, and the rise of the Confederacy. SPLC's interests expanded across the political spectrum to include both right-wing and left-wing extremist literature.

        Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) is one of the largest and oldest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Joseph O'Donnell was an executive with JWT and served as the company's Chief Executive Officer during 1986. The Joseph O'Donnell Papers cover the years 1947-1987, with the bulk of materials from 1986, the year O'Donnell served as Chief Executive Officer of JWT. The collection primarily consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports of company performance, presentations and company policy information. The collection also includes personnel-related records, photographs, and videocassettes of television commercials of JWT and competing agencies. Companies represented in the collection include Beatrice Foods; Kodak; Ford; Hyatt Hotels; IBM; Kellogg's; Kraft; Pepsi-Cola; Sprint; Unilever; and U.S. Air. Acquired as part of the John W.           Consumer Reports is a product testing and consumer advocacy nonprofit organization based in Yonkers, N.Y., founded in 1936. Esther Peterson (1906-1997) was a leader in consumer, labor and women's movements who served as the first Special Assistant to the President for Consumer Affairs. The Consumer Reports Esther Peterson papers include correspondence, clippings, photographs, texts of articles and speeches, reports, white papers, and other printed materials.               Dean of Howard University School of Communications, 1975-1985; founder of the Minorities and Communications Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Collection includes materials from Lionel Barrow's advertising career, his teaching and tenure at Howard University, and his involvement in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). The earliest materials include student work from Barrow's youth and his studies at Morehouse College, as well as materials from his service in the 24th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. Another significant portion of the collection is Barrow's newspaper clippings and subject files, dating largely from the 1960s-2000s. His research on an unfinished book about the Freedom's Journal is also a large component of the collection.                 The Edgar Marquess Branch Papers span the years from 1939 to 2003, with the majority of the materials dating from 1960 to 1990. Through correspondence and writings, they document Branch's lifelong research on nineteenth-century American author Mark Twain. Important correspondents include such Twain scholars as Fred Anderson, Louis Budd, Cyril Clemens, Robert Hirst, and Henry Nash Smith. Topics chiefly focus on issues concerning academic writers, and Twain's life and literary output. Although the bulk of this collection concerns Branch's work on Twain, it should be noted that Professor Branch was also an eminent scholar of James T. Farrell, a twentieth-century American novelist best known for his "Studs Lonigan" series (1932-1935). Branch's papers are organized into three series: Correspondence, Special Projects Files, and Writings. Although Branch taught for many years as a Professor of English, there are no teaching materials in the collection. However, the correspondence may contain some references to teaching American literature and to activities as a faculty member at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

                                  Kay Leigh Hagan papers, 1955-2012

                                  Kay Leigh Hagan is a writer, teacher, and feminist. Much of her early career focused on raising women's consciousness by teaching how to recognize various forms of internalized oppression in private classes she called "Feminars". In addition to her writing and teaching, this collection documents Hagan's many public speaking appearances and workshops, including those at womyn's music festivals (1988-2000). Her published works include Fugitive Information: Essays from a Feminist Hothead (1993), Internal Affairs: A Journal Keeping Workbook for Self-Intimacy (1990), Prayers to the Moon: Exercises in Self-Reflection (1991), and Vow: The Way of the Milagro (2003) with photographer Richard Downing. She was also the editor of Women Respond to the Men's Movement: A Feminist Collection (1992), and co-author of A Peculiar Alchemy (2007), a centennial history of the School for Advanced Research, with Nancy Owen Lewis. She has been active in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was affiliated with Forrest Avenue Consortium (later Nexus Contemporary Art Center) and Charis Books & More; and Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she worked with Los Alamos National Laboratory and the School for Advanced Research, among other organizations.

                                  Frank Slaughter was a white surgeon and author who published 65 novels mostly focused on medicine, historical fiction and biblical history. The collection includes personal and professional correspondence and writings, primarily manuscript drafts and some published works of Frank Slaughter as well as some manuscript drafts of Jane Slaughter, Frank Slaughter's wife and a children's book author. Also included are research and publicity materials. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collection.

                                  Duke Mathematical Journal records, 1924-1988

                                  This collection is largely comprised of correspondence of the individuals and organizations who communicated with the editors of the Duke Mathematical Journal. All correspondence related to accepted papers was kept, as well as a significant amount of correspondence related to rejected papers before 1970. Referee reports are also included, as well as billing and correspondence between the Journal and various publishing houses. Topics covered include edits to papers, requests for offprint copies, correspondence between editors, correspondence with the American Mathematical Society, and the Journal's budget and funding. The collection ends with a series of record books recording each paper received and reviewed by the Journal.

                                  Charles E. Jordan papers, 1942-1966

                                  Charles E. Jordan (1901-1974) served Duke as Assistant Secretary from 1925 to 1941, as Secretary from 1941 to 1957, as Chairman of the Athletic council from 1949 to 1963, and as Vice President for University Relations from 1946 to 1966. He was also active in community organizations, including the Durham County and North Carolina Boards of Education and various Methodist Church organizations. Jordan retired from Duke in 1966. The collection includes correspondence, subject files, audiotape, and other records relating to administrative and athletic matters at Duke University. Major subjects include scholarships, public relations, intercollegiate athletics (NCAA, ACC, Southern Conference, Duke Athletic Council, and Duke Athletic Association), the Angier B. Duke Memorial Scholarship Program, the Woman's College, and university publications. There are also materials relating to the proceedings of the North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church and to educational matters in Durham and North Carolina. English.

                                  The Dept. of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) was created in 1975 by the merger of the Men's and Women's Physical Education Departments. However, formal physical education at Duke University dates to 1902 when President Kilgo invited Wilbur "Cap" Card to return to Trinity College as Director of a new program in physical education. The collection contains printed material on intramural athletics, personal recreational programs, physical education, and materials related to Duke sports clubs. The John Friedrich papers series consists of administrative records pertaining to his chairmanship of HPER from 1963-1986.

                                  Hertha Sponer papers, 1917-1967

                                  Hertha Sponer, 1895-1968, was a German physicist who immigrated to the United States and came to Duke University in 1936, where she became the first woman on its Physics Department faculty. She conducted research and taught at Duke until 1965, supervising thirty-five masters and doctoral degree graduates. The Hertha Sponer Papers span the years 1917-1967 and comprise the correspondence, research, speeches, writings, and teaching materials of German physicist Hertha Sponer, who in 1936 became the first woman appointed to the faculty of the Duke University Department of Physics. The collection primarily documents her American career, especially her work in the areas of chemical physics, spectrum analysis, and molecular spectroscopy. Arranged in five series: Correspondence, Printed Materials, Professional Files, Research Files, and Writings and Speeches. The Correspondence Series covers the final two decades of her career, from the late 1940s to 1967, and primarily consists of letters about research with her numerous collaborators and co-authors. Some of her final letters discuss death of her husband, physicist James Franck, in 1964, and also allude to the death that same year of her Duke Physics Department associate and fellow German refugee, Hedwig Kohn. The Printed Materials Series holds offprints and reprints of Sponer's articles from the 1930s-1960s, plus a few articles by Franck. Sponer's teaching and administrative files, including correspondence with graduate students, appear in the Professional Files. The Research Files make up the largest series in the collection; these files document her research on many topics and articles and also contain much of the collection's correspondence. The Writings and Speeches Series gathers several papers and talks from the last half-dozen years of Sponer's professional career.

                                  A small group of articles and speeches from the last years of Sponer's career (note: other writings and speeches can be found in either the Research Files, by topic or collaborator, or in Printed Materials, by year). Also included here is her work translating James Franck's Nobel Prize lecture, originally given in German in 1926; requests for this translation came to her following Franck's death in 1964, when various scientific organizations were preparing memorials to his career.

                                    R.C. Maxwell Company records, 1891-2001 and undated

                                    R.C. Maxwell Company of Trenton, N.J., was one of the earliest enduring outdoor advertising companies, founded in 1894 by Robert Chester Maxwell (1873-1955) and continued to operate primarily in the New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania area until the company was sold in 2000. The R.C. Maxwell Company Records span the years 1891-2001 and include photographs and negatives, videocassettes, ledgers and account books, scrapbooks, correspondence and legal papers relating to the company's operations in outdoor advertising. Photographs and negatives in several formats (film, glass negatives, polaroid prints) document billboard designs for a variety of advertisers as well as depicting billboard and electric sign structures and their location relative to the surrounding environment. Urban locations include Times Square in New York and the Atlantic City, N.J., Boardwalk, where a number of photographs also document the Miss America beauty pageant parade and other parades in which the R.C. Maxwell Company participated. A few photographs document billboard construction and erection; there are also photographs of the Maxwell family and of Maxwell company staff and employees. Scrapbooks contain images of billboards and wall paintings produced by the Maxwell company as well as by David L. Clark, a High Point, N.C. artist and sign painter who was R.C. Maxwell's guardian. Other scrapbooks document primarily Coca-Cola signs of the early 20th century, as well as World War I support efforts including the U.S. Food Administration (under the direction of Herbert Hoover), the U.S. Fuel Administration, and Liberty Bond campaigns. Companies represented in the collection include the Boardwalk Advertising Signs Co., C&B Electric Signs Co., Trenton Advertising Co., and Trenton Poster Advertising Co. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

                                    Italian Cultural Posters collection, 1930s-1980s and undated bulk 1970-1989

                                    Collection consists of 115 Italian cultural and political posters, the bulk of which date from the 1970s and 1980s. Nearly half of the posters were printed by the Italian Communist Party (Pci) offices in Milan and Rome, chiefly in the 1970s, and address themes such as control of the media (particularly television and newspapers), the environment, elections, educational reform, political radicalism, labor issues, voting rights, patronage and other forms of corruption, and taxation. Many posters display the images and words of political activists from around the world. Some posters refer to Francoism, to American leaders such as President Nixon, and to the Vietnam War. Many of the latter express an anti-American position. Other posters in the collection advertise art and design exhibits, and announce celebrations and civic events. Also includes a set of 38 color slides of elections broadsides (1986-1987) posted in public spaces in Italy.

                                    Collection of fine art print and graphic design projects by Horse & Buggy Press in Durham, North Carolina, commissioned chiefly by non-profit organizations, small firms, individual authors and artists, and community events organizers. Formats include catalogs, broadsides, posters, newsletters, pamphlets and brochures, programs, and jacket and packaging designs for six audio and film recordings. Smaller projects include exhibit and book announcements, business cards, invitations, and menus for local restaurants. Chiefly consists of letterpress work, but there are also examples of offset and digitally printed items. Many projects involved the work of other artists and designers, and many were printed in limited editions. Content often includes poetry, prose excerpts, and quotes. Books and zines printed by Horse & Buggy Press have been separated from this collection and individually described for the Duke University Libraries catalog.
