Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) was an author, lecturer, abolitionist, and suffragist, best known for authoring the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Collection comprises a letter dated 1909 September 22 from Julia Ward Howe to Magister H.R. Sanborn in which she discusses her plan for reading an unnamed poem at the Hudson-Fulton celebration.

W. C. Lloyd was a photographer. Collection comprises a gelatin silver photograph taken during the trail at Fort Sam Houston following the Houston Riot of 1917 or Camp Logan riot. It shows 64 African-American members of the Army's 24th Infantry being court martialed for mutiny and the murder of 17 people during the riot. The photographer included description written onto the negative. The back is stamped with the Lloyd Photo Co. address.

Collection contains a wide variety of material documenting different medical topics, specialties, institutions, education, and people throughout history, and it is largely but not entirely focused on Western, Euro-centric medicine as practiced by white men. Women, people with physical and mental disabilities, and non-Western medical practices are represented in select materials. The collection consists mostly of publications (article reprints, theses, dissertations, and journal issues), speeches, histories, and profiles of medical professionals and organizations, as well as a large amount of material advertising patent medicines and devices. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collection at Duke University.

The Duke University History of Medicine Collections acquire, preserve, interpret, and make available for research and instruction, materials documenting the history of medicine, biomedical science, health and disease in the global context of the Western medical tradition. The collection was assembled by Duke Medical Center Library staff, and contains newspapers and other oversize print materials related to the history of medicine. The earliest date comes from a modern reproduction in black-and-white of an anatomical treatise from 1628. Newspaper issues from the 18th and 19th centuries carry advertisements related to physicians' services, medical practices, and medicinal products. Single sheets from the London Illustrated News concern the activities of Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War, 1855-1856, and are illustrated with large black-and-white engravings; one issue reproduces a piece of music with verses praising Nightingale. The items were acquired from various sources as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

The Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo papers comprises interviews with female domestic worker residents of Los Angeles between 1993 and 1996. Most of the interviewees come from Latin America. The interviews address a wide variety of topics: job searching and recruiters, relationships with employers, employment history, work-related injuries, job content, food habits, childcare, motherhood, wages, and transportation.

George Henry Hood papers, 1857-1895

The papers of George Henry Hood span the years 1857 to 1895, although the bulk of the material falls in the period 1861 to 1863. It consists primarily of correspondence between Hood and his wife "Etta" written while he was travailing on business selling rubber goods for a variety of firms, including the Beverly Rubber Company of Beverly, Mass., and the Rubber Clothing Company of New York and Boston. There are also a few letters from other family members and business associates and some miscellaneous items. The letters indicate that Hood's travels took him to Philadelphia (1861), St. Louis (1862), New York (1862-1863), Washington, D.C. (1861-1863), and other places. Letters from St. Louis and Washington, in particular, contain some observations on Civil War activity in those places.

Resident of Harlem, N.Y., advertising executive, and bibliofile. Collection comprises one spiral-bound portfolio (21 pgs.) containing clippings, drawings, and typewritten notes, intended as a prospectus for a proposed new magazine supplement targeted at African Americans, to be carried in newspapers nationwide. In the prospectus, Holte explained the historical role played by African American newspapers in their community, as well as economic growth that made them stable consumers and an attractive targeted market. The advertising opportunity was directed at Lever Brothers Company. Includes 5 pages of correspondence between Holte, Lever Brothers, and THIS WEEK MAGAZINE, all laid-in at the end of the prospectus, that made it clear that Holte's proposal was rejected. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

The oral history video recordings, audio recordings, and transcripts in this collection were produced or collected by the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina (JHFNC) and historian Leonard Rogoff as source material for various projects related to the history of Jews in North Carolina. The collection consists of individual and group interviews of Jewish residents of urban and rural North Carolina, including rabbis. Topics discussed by interviewees include family and community history, religious education, participation in Jewish congregations, anti-Semitism and race relations the civil rights movement in North Carolina, World War II military service and the Holocaust, family businesses, and philanthropy. Interviewers include Rogoff, Robin Gruber, and Steven Channing.

The Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina (JHFNC) is an independent organization dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of the Jewish people of North Carolina, and transferred its archives, including these materials, to the Rubenstein Library in 2014. Since 2019, the organization has been known as Jewish Heritage North Carolina (JHNC). This collection consists of historical material created or collected by Jewish individuals, families, and social and religious organizations of North Carolina, and donated to the JHFNC. Types of material include scrapbooks, certificates, pamphlets, catalogs, correspondence, photographs, World War II-era Nazi weapons and military paraphernalia collected by Jewish American soldiers, and other artifacts and manuscript materials.

Milo A. Jewett was a physician, amateur photographer, and American consul in Turkey (Sivas, 1892-1905 and Trebizond, 1905-1911). Collection comprises 19 images of various locations in the northern provinces, including 18 mounted albumen photographs probably taken by Jewett, along with one published view of Sivas attributed to Franklin Eng Co, Boston. All but one of the images is captioned, and several photographs an additional information written on the back of the mount.

Jennings include business documents of Samuel Jennings, David Fouch, and Samuel Jennings Jr., farmers and millers of wheat in Washington County, Maryland; land deeds and surveys; debts; tax listings; correspondence concerning family matters and social life in Maryland, Iowa, Illinois, and South Dakota; papers related to the English estate of William Jenners; Sunday School lessons of the 1870s; and genealogies of the Fouch and Jennings (or Jenners) families. Volumes include an account book, 1852-1853, of David Fouch (?) for milling flour, and a route book, 1882-1883, of Fred O'Brian.
