This collection of print materials, many of them rare and ephemeral, was assembled over many decades by Guido Mazzoni, an Italian Senator, Dante scholar, professor, and bibliophile. The approximately 49,648 pieces span the years 1572 through 1946, with the bulk dating from the mid-18th to the early 20th centuries. Topics range widely and include Italian politics, particularly the rise of Socialism and Fascism; Italian humanities, especially poetry, theater, and opera; Dante studies; patriotic writings, including some by Mussolini and others in his regime; and the history and context of both World Wars. Popular literary and cultural serials abound, many with writings by noted authors, including women writers. Given Mazzoni's background in academics, his friendships with publishers, and his residence in Padova and Firenze, many of the authors are Jewish. Many of the pieces were sent to Mazzoni from former students or colleagues and are inscribed to him. Mazzoni collected many rare pieces from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries; broadsides from Napoleonic, Medicean, and Borbonic Italian regions are numerous. Formats represented in the collection include: pamphlets, offprints, clippings, full-issue newspapers (many from the Piedmont), libretti, scores, manuscript items, small cards, periodicals, small volumes, political broadsides, epithalamia (pieces produced on the occasion of a wedding), and one handmade photo album. There are many illustrated publications, fine engravings, woodcuts, and items with map inserts. About 80 percent of the material is in the Italian language: other common languages include Latin, French, English, German. There are also some publications in Greek, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, and Eastern European languages.

Author and professor at the University of Florida. Published works include Edisto, A Woman Named Drown, Typical, Mrs. Hollingsworth's Men, and The Interrogative Mood: A Novel?. Collection includes writings and drafts of Powell's early novels, including Edisto and A Woman Named Drown, as well as essays, short stories, and articles for popular magazines and literary anthologies. Some of these appear in Typical, a collection of Powell's short stories. The collection also includes correspondence, publishing contracts, reviews, interviews, and travel files, many relating to the publication of Edisto.

James T. Powers was a well-known comic actor, songwriter, playwright, and vaudeville entertainer based in New York City. The materials in the collection cover the entirety of his career, from the 1880s to the 1930s, when he retired. There are also items relating to the acting career and family of his wife, Rachel Booth Powers. The materials are arranged into the following series: Correspondence, Financial and Legal Papers, Photographs and Other Images, Print Materials, Rachel Booth Powers Papers, Sheet Music, Volumes, and Other Writings. The collection contains over 260 images, including tintypes, several lithographs, gelatin silver photographs, and albumen prints, dating from approximately 1860 to the early 1940s. The rest of the collection includes scrapbooks, autograph albums, a diary by Rachel Booth Powers, many clippings, drafts of scripts and reminiscences, sheet music, notebooks, and other professional papers. Taken as a whole, the collection provides a rich look at the society and culture of vaudeville theater in New York City during Rachel and James T. Powers' careers.

Richard J. Powell is the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art and Art History at Duke University, where he has taught since 1989. The Richard Powell Papers date from 1960 to 2011 and document Powell's career as a prominent scholar of African and Afro-American art and as professor of art history at Duke University. Materials originate from Powell's student years, travels, research, and work at various cultural institutions, including Duke University, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and the Washington Project for the Arts. There is extensive material on Powell's books, exhibitions, and other professional activities.

Reverend Doctor Jeanne Audrey Powers is a retired prominent activist clergywoman who was one of the first women to be ordained in the United Methodist Church. She is a longtime advocate for ecumenism and inclusiveness within the church. She was the highest-ranking UM church official to come out as gay in 1995. The collection contains materials documenting Reverend Doctor Powers’ personal and professional lives including correspondence, writings, family history, education, committee work, sermons, travels and activism.

Community and labor movement organizer in Durham, N.C.; chair of the Triangle Friends of the United Farm Workers; board member of the National Farm Worker Ministry; member of the Farmworker Ministry Commission, N.C. Council of Churches. Accession (2009-0279) (40,500 items; 54.0 lin. ft.; dated 1970-2006) includes Preiss's personal papers as well as organizational records from her role in the Triangle Friends of the United Farm Workers (TFUFW), the National Farmworker Ministry (NFWM), the Farmworker Ministry Commission, and the AFL-CIO's Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC). Each of these organizations worked to improve the lives of farmworkers through unionizing, educating the public about the origins of food, and pressuring farms and companies through boycotts, petitions, and publicity. Includes materials from UFW campaigns and boycotts that Preiss helped organize in Durham, such as Campbell's, Gallo wines, Prime mushrooms, strawberries, California grapes, and Mt. Olive pickles. Includes publications and photographs from visits from labor organizers such as Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. Also present are materials from labor issues such as pesticide use, migrant education, the H-2 Workers program, child labor, slavery, and farmworker health. Edward Prescott (1940-2022) was a Nobel Prize winner and a Regents Professor (of economics) at Arizona State University. This collection documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, teaching, and professional activities. It was acquired as part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Alfred Playfair Powelson (1851-1916) was a Methodist minister who served in Ohio and in Tacoma, Washington. Powelson founded and served as principal of the non-denominational Tacoma Academy (1889-1898) and later served as president of the College of the City of Tacoma (1898-1905). Collection includes 18 manuscript sermons of Methodist minister Alfred Playfair Powelson, dated 1883 to 1888. Each sermon is loosely tied with original string and three have printed cover sheets. Some sermons are title with only a book, chapter and verse, while Powelson supplied titles for others. Powelson often recorded the location and date that he preached each sermon. The bulk of the sermons in the collection were given at Woodbury, Conn. or Tacoma, Wash. Also included is Powelson's original minister's license from the State of Ohio, dated 1875.

Porter Advertising, founded in 1945, is an out-of-home advertising company based in Richmond, Indiana. Porter Advertising Billboard Sketches date between the 1950s and 1970s and document the company's poster designs for a wide range of businesses in the region around Richmond, Indiana. The collection includes rough and developed sketches; design drawings for specific businesses and campaigns; generic designs; and billboard mockups for local businesses such as car dealerships; banks and financial institutions; funeral homes; hospitals and clinics; motels; retail stores; restaurants; and others. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Collection consists of the personal and professional correspondence of James Hinton Pou, Sr., lawyer, politician, and land developer of Raleigh, North Carolina. Topics cover late 19th and early 20th century North Carolina politics and legal system, business and land development in North Carolina, the history of Raleigh, N.C. and Wake County, and the Pou-Bailey families.

Long-time employee of the North Carolina Rural Electrification Authority and resident of Raleigh, N.C. Chiefly clippings on rural electrification amassed by Price during his long employment with the North Carolina Rural Electrification Authority. Also includes correspondence; a typescript of The Story of a Mountain Missionary, Rev. James Floyd Fletcher, 1858-1946 by A. J. Fletcher of Raleigh; and a mimeographed copy of Rural Electrification in North Carolina by Joseph Deutsch (Chapel Hill, 1944).

Portland Advertising Federation was an advertising club formed in 1906 in Portland, Ore. Also known as PAF. Collection comprises seminar materials, including a manual (55 pgs) on the topic, a printed copy of the seminar's opening speech, and a copy of the its evaluation sheet. The seminar was intended to provide a global view of the advertising process. Manual curriculum topics include advertising in the American socio-economic system, scope and organization of the advertising business, the media planning process, the creative process, regulation of advertising, and public relations.

Chiefly genealogical materials gathered by Robert Price and others, mostly pertaining to the Price family. Includes genealogical charts, typescripts, and correspondence.

Quaker farmer, fruit-grower, and broom-maker from Frederick County, Virginia. The Mordecai Purcell papers span the years 1778-1901 and contain correspondence, bills, receipts, business and legal papers, and a ledger relating to Quaker farmer Mordecai Purcell, his brother, John Purcell, and the Cather family (John Purcell married Adaline J. Cather), living in Virginia.

Reynolds Price (1933-2011) was a novelist, short story writer, poet, dramatist, essayist, translator, and James B. Duke Professor of English at Duke University, where he taught creative writing and literature beginning in 1958. He was an alumnus of Duke and of Oxford University, which he attended on a Rhodes Scholarship. He received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and his books were nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. The collection is comprised of correspondence, writings, serials, clippings, speeches, interviews, legal and financial papers, photographs, audiovisual materials, and digital materials reflecting Price's career and personal life. Personal and professional correspondence document his education at Duke University, especially his studies under William Blackburn; his period abroad as a Rhodes Scholar at Merton College, Oxford; and his literary work and interaction with other authors, including Stephen Spender, Eudora Welty, and Allan Gurganus. Writings include manuscripts, typescripts, proofs, outlines, and notes produced in the creation and publication of all his major works, including: A Long and Happy Life; Kate Vaiden; A Palpable God; Clear Pictures; A Whole New Life; The Collected Stories; The Collected Poems; A Letter to a Godchild; Ardent Spirits; The Good Priest's Son, and many other books, individual stories, poems, and essays.

Minnie Bruce Pratt was born in Selma, Alabama in 1946 and raised in nearby Centreville. She received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and a doctorate in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. An award-winning poet, Pratt has published collections of both poetry and essays. Pratt began teaching and grass roots organizing in North Carolina in the 1970s, and has continued her work as a professor and activist through 2008, the time of this writing. Pratt frequently makes speaking appearances at conferences and universities across the United States. Pratt has two sons, Ransom Weaver and Ben Weaver, from her marriage (1966-1975). As of 2008, Pratt resides with longtime partner, transgender activist and author Leslie Feinberg. The collection dates primarily between 1975 and 2005 and focuses on women's studies, sexual and gender identity, sexuality, and Pratt's fight against racism, sexism, imperialism and other forms of intolerance. A Writing Series comprises drafts, proofs, and galleys related to Pratt's major works through 2003, as well as materials related to shorter pieces by Pratt, reviews, print interviews, materials related to Pratt's editorial work, and personal journals. The series also contains materials pertaining to the outside funding from grants and speaking appearances that Pratt obtained to support herself as a writer. Major works represented are Pratt's poetry and essay collections The Sound of One Fork, We Say We Love Each Other, Crime Against Nature, Rebellion: Essays 1980-1991, S/HE, Walking Back Up Depot Street, and The Dirt She Ate. Other series in the collection are Correspondence; Family, consisting of early correspondence, mementos, photographs, and genealogical information; Activism, files of newspaper clippings, fliers, and correspondence related to Pratt's grass roots organizing; Teaching, Financial, Photographs, Audiovisual Material, Printed Material, and Ephemera. Notable correspondents include Mumia Abu-Jamal, Dorothy Allison, Judith Arcana, Elly Bulkin, Chrystos, Holly Hughes, Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich, and Mab Segrest.

African American family originally from Virginia and North Carolina. Legal papers and correspondence relating to the Alexander Proctor family, tracing their history beginning as freedmen in Virginia and North Carolina, their 1840s resettlement in Warren County, Ohio, their emigration to Haiti in 1861 as part of the Redpath movement, and their eventual return to Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1866. The correspondence dates principally from the 1870s, is chiefly written by A.W. Proctor, one of Alexander Proctor's sons, and S.S. Hutchins, friend of Proctor's son, Isaac, and relates to family affairs, business, and other matters. S.S. Hutchins is identified in the Gould's St. Louis Directory (1874), 449, as Chief Clerk in the U.S. Army Engineer's Office. One letter from a friend to a family member mentions seeing Frederick Douglass at Wilberforce College in 1893. The legal records document the free status of the Proctors, various labor agreements, and migration papers, and include receipts and letters of introduction.

Supply sergeant with American Expeditionary Forces in World War I and native of Durham, N.C. Chiefly letters written by Pridgen while he was with Company M, 120th U.S. Infantry, 30th Division of American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. He was located at Camp Sevier, Greenville, S.C., and in France. Two of his notebooks read "Engineers Candidate School" and indicate he was trained in mining, field fortification, military bridges, and camouflage. They contain detailed penciled drawings which include dimensions. Collection also contains military papers, memorabilia, ephemera, and legal papers relating to Pridgen's automobile dealership.

Shawn Pridgen is a documentary photographer based in Brooklyn, New York whose photographic career began with the Black Lives Matter protests, which followed the violent deaths of African American citizens at the hands of law enforcement. In 2020 he received the Collection Award from the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University for this portfolio. Collection consists of fifteen photographic prints of images taken in 2020 at Black Lives Matter protests and rallies in New York City and Washington, D.C. by documentarian Shawn Michael Pridgen. Subjects include portraits of protesters, in some cases with Washington, D.C. monuments in the background; and images of police, crowds, marches, protest signs, city streets and other urban features. The black-and-white prints measure 11x14 inches (9) and 16x20 inches (6). Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Thomas Prince (1687-1758) was a graduate of Harvard College, a clergyman, scholar, historian, pastor of the Old South Church in Boston, Mass. from 1718 to 1758, and author of A Chronological History of New England, in the Form of Annals (1736). Collection includes three letters, dated 1721, 1726, and 1738, to Thomas Prince, pastor of the Old South Church in Boston. There are two letters from Prince's sister Abigail in Middleborough, Mass., dated January 4, 1721 and February 25, 1726, both discussing family matters such as health, various leases and deeds, and other subjects. In another letter, dated 1738, Prince's mother-in-law Grace Denny, of Old Newton, England, discusses her anxiety about not hearing from Prince, her declining health, and politics and the royal family in England. In a postscript, Denny notes that she has "heard of a printed account about Great Conversions in Hampshire...by the the Rev'd Doctor Watts and Doctor Guyse."

Residents of Little Hallingbury, Essex, England. Collection consists almost entirely of personal correspondence of the Pritchett family, whose members included the Reverend Charles Richard Pritchett (1785-1849), an Anglican clergyman. The correspondence represents two generations, and includes letters from Pritchett's second wife, Mary Needham Burder Pritchett, other siblings of Charles and Mary, especially Elizabeth Burder, and their children. The Wollaston and James families are also represented. Many of the letters were written by women. Also included is a folder of unrelated envelopes and covers, apparently collected for their stamps, postmarks, and signatures.

Creasy Kinion Proctor (1889-1946) was a clergyman from Durham, North Carolina, a Trinity College alumnus and Duke University Trustee, and Superintendent of Oxford Orphanage from 1928 to 1946, the year he died. Collection consists chiefly of sermon outlines dating from the early 20th century, written by Creasy Kinion Proctor, a minister ordained by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, of North Carolina. There are also a few other papers included in the collection, including an index to sermon topics.

Printed form in German language for proof of smallpox vaccination, filled out in manuscript hand with the name of the patient, a P[?] Maurer, 49 years of age, and the date of vaccination, August 12, 1872, and the date when the vaccination was declared successful and the certificate signed by the physician, a Professor Zelinder, August 20, 1872. The entry for the location may be Balaton, Hungary. In 1872 there was a very severe smallpox outbreak in England; in 1874, a compulsory vaccination law went into effect in Germany. The certificate bears a decorative border and a small shield. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

The Radical and Labor Pamphlets Collection (1896-1977) includes pamphlets and other ephemeral publications relating to communism, socialism and other left-wing movements as well as to labor organizations, trade unions, feminism and the women's movement, and Black power. There are some additional pamphlets related to anti-communist movements and some examples of Soviet propaganda.

This collection contains professional, business, personal and family correspondence and other papers of the related Purviance and Courtenay families of Baltimore, Md., and elsewhere. The collection pertains to Revolutionary War activities in Maryland, shipping and trade, Western lands, settlement of estates, Civil War veterans' activities, the Cuban independence movement, and other matters. Includes papers of John Henry Purviance, U.S. diplomat in Paris, concerning the Monroe Mission (1794), U.S. relations with Napoleon and the Revolutionary French Government; papers relating to the financial affairs of Elizabeth Isabella Purviance Courtenay; papers of Edward H. Courtenay, Sr., relating to his career at West Point, his later teaching duties there and at other colleges, and his investment activities; and letters of Edward H. Courtenay, Jr., written in Washington, D.C., during the Civil War, describing the city and political opinion there. Lawyer and philanthropist of Peekskill, N.Y. Personal, business, political, and philanthropic correspondence (chiefly 1925-1938), relating to Pugsley's political work for the Democratic Party, his philanthropic activities, his efforts to promote better understanding and knowledge of international affairs, U.S. and New York politics (1910-1938), and U.S. economic conditions (1920s and 1930s). Correspondents include Roscoe Pound and William Howard Taft.

Lydia Rabinowitsch-Kempner (1871-1935) was a German bacteriologist and one of the first women to reach the rank of Professor in Germany. The Lydia Rabinowitsch-Kempner Autograph Book and Papers date from the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century, and contain letters written to Rabinowitsch-Kempner from leading German scientists, as well as a reprint and three photographs. Correspondents include Robert and Hedwig Koch, Paul Ehrlich, Emil Behring, Richard Pfeiffer, and Alexandre Besredka, as well as calling cards with notations from Lord Joseph Lister, Elie (Ilija) Metchnikoff, and Albert Calmette. Many of the letters and calling cards are arranged in a bound scrapbook, and relate to personal as well as professional matters. The collection also contains a series of six letters from Max von Pettenkofer to Paul Lindau, editor of Nord und Süd,. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

The Reproductive Rights National Network formed in 1978 in response to the nationwide abortion debate launched by Roe v. Wade. It eventually included about 50 feminist organizations and devoted itself to making reproductive choices available for all women. R2N2 campaigned for safe abortions; for the right of gay couples to adopt and raise children; and against the sterilization of poor or unfit mothers. It disbanded in 1984. Collection includes an International Planned Parenthood Federation report (Spring 1970); Reproductive Rights National Network newsletters and other coverage of the abortion debate; and administrative materials from the operations of the R2N2, including proposed platforms and policies, clippings and testimonials, and other miscellaneous notes and material. Subjects include abortion rights and protests; birth control; women's sterilization, particularly of Hispanic women; and gay and lesbian rights. Edmund Quincy, an author and reformer, was the second son of Josiah Quincy III and Eliza Susan Morton Quincy. Collection comprises three letters Edmund Quincy wrote to abolitionist and women's rights advocate Parker Pillsbury, primarily regarding reminiscences of Quincy's father, and exchanges of books and pamphlets.

Media critic, feminist author and documentary filmmaker based in Massachusetts. Collection spans 1918-2014 and includes: clippings; tear sheets; correspondence; research reports and other printed materials; slides and slide presentation texts; audiovisual materials in multiple formats including 8mm and 16mm films, audio and video cassettes; book drafts and research files used for teaching and production of Kilbournes books and films. Lawrence Klein (1920-2013) was a Nobel Prize winner and the Benjamin Franklin Professor of Economics and Finance, Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania. This collection primarily documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, research, and professional and faculty activities. It forms parts of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Mary Tarleton Knollenberg (1904-1992) was an American sculptor working primarily in bronze, stone and plaster. Her artwork characteristically portrays the female form and expressions of female identity. She specialized in nudes; however, her oeuvre also contains animals, busts, and portraits. The Mary Tarleton Knollenberg papers comprise photographs of her family and her sculptures, correspondence with her husband and fellow artists, journals, and ephemera related to her work and exhibitions. The collection also contains resources used in the creation of the retrospective Modern Figures, written by Tarleton's grand-niece, Ippy Patterson.

Advertising executive with Doyle Dane Bernbach and DDB Needham agencies in the New York and Los Angeles offices; marketing executive for Universal Pictures. Collection spans the 1950s-2015 and includes policy and training manuals, media campaign reports, speeches and writings and press clippings, other printed materials, print advertisements, photographs, slides, and other materials that relate to Kornblit's career in advertising at the Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB) and DDB Needham agencies. Set of 95 photographic color images in slide format, taken by Jeff Kosokoff, a librarian at Duke University, Durham, N.C., while traveling in Japan, mainland China, and Taiwan from January to April 1983. The images are arranged by geographic location, in alphabetical order: Akira, Japan; Hong Kong; Hohhot (or Huhhot), the capital of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region in North China; the Inner Mongolia grasslands; and Taipei, Taiwan. Subjects includes the rural landscapes and cityscapes of each area and its citizens, including street scenes and street art, markets, advertising and other signs, vending machines, and modes of transportation. Photographs taken in Inner Mongolia include dwellings (yurts), families and individuals in native dress, domestic Bactrian camels, and some scenes from the city of Hohhot. Jeanette Kostyrka was a Catholic anti-abortion activist who distributed prayer cards encouraging "spiritual adoption" of "unborns." The collection primarily consists of requests for and acknowledgements of receipt of prayer cards, as well as a small amount of other correspondence and anti-abortion brochures and pamphlets, including some with images of fetuses.

Stacy Kranitz is a documentary photographer and author based in Tennessee. Collection consists of 15 color inkjet prints and a 100-page handmade illustrated book fom a project titled Fulcrum of Malice, which documents the connections between conditions in African American neighborhoods and the siting and management of hazardous industries and waste sites around Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The photographs show African American families at home and in their neighborhoods, people in church and at meetings about the hazardous waste sites, biodegraded landscapes, and the industrial sites themselves. The book also includes text, maps, charts that narrate the community histories, government policies which led to the current situation, and the decades-long struggle for environmental and health justice for the inhabitants. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Irwin Kremen (1925-2020) was an American artist who at 41 began making art while Director of the Duke University Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology. Collection includes exhibition announcements, programs, and brochures for Irwin Kremen art exhibitions, as well as correspondence with Margaret Williams in Duke's Department of Psychology.

KNOW Inc. was a publisher and distributor founded in 1969 by members of the Pittsburgh National Organization for Women (NOW) chapter. Collection consists of assorted ephemeral printed materials distributed by KNOW Inc., relating to second-wave feminism and social sciences.

North Carolina woman who taught school in Europe. Letters (76 items; dated 1951-1953) to parents chiefly sent from Paris with a few from Germany, describing social life and post-war atmosphere. Includes one photograph of New Year's Eve party, and telegram. Addition (200 items; dated 1976-1997) contains 42 ledgers and two loose-leaf file folders containing Knox's journals. There are also copies of the family's newsletter, and some of Knox's correspondence.

The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. The Lewis Hine Documentary Fellows Program (LHDFP) is administered by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University to support documentary photographers who address humanitarian issues in the U.S. and abroad. The Lewis Hine Fellowship Photographs Collection represents a selection of images from the documentary projects of seven LHDFP fellows: Alex Fattal, Maital Guttman, Kate Joyce, Jonna McKone, Elena Rue, Amanda van Scoyoc, and Lucy Wilson. The photographic images and videos in the collection depict home and community life of disadvantaged families and children in several sub-Saharan African nations (South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia), as well as Massachusetts and New Jersey. They show everyday life and activities, such as children playing and completing chores, mothers cooking meals, disabled children going to school, household living conditions, and impoverished orphans and HIV-positive children in their familial situations, as well as funerals and school presentations (among other community events). In addition to photographic prints, there are also some documents relating to the projects, DVDs of the photographers' documentary work, and an archived version of the LHDFP website. Durham, N.C. hospital established in 1901 Dr. Aaron Moore, Dr. Stanford Warren, and John Merrick to serve African Americans in the area. The Lincoln Hospital Records span the years 1901-1998, and primarily comprise the institution's administrative and medical files. The administrative records document the hospital's administrative history from the 1930s to the 1980s (bulk 1950-1976), primarily in files maintained by the hospital superintendents, especially Larry T. Suitt (1963-1977). There is also some information on the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing. The medical records (1925-1983 and undated) include obstetrical, surgical, discharge, and death records. Some of these are currently closed to research. The collection as a whole documents the bi-racial cooperation that was involved in establishing, running, and maintaining the institution, and outlines the collaboration between Lincoln Hospital, Watts Hospital, and the Duke University School of Medicine in providing patient care as well as education for African American medical professionals. The medical records also demonstrate the emphasis superintendents placed on general record-keeping, statistics, and the documentation of a patient's medical history. Included is a Duke Endowment series that documents the funds the Endowment distributed annually to assist the hospital in meeting costs incurred by charity cases, equipment, and renovations. There are only a few items dated after the merger in 1976 and only one file regarding the institution's School of Nursing.

Collection includes administrative materials, grant and funding applications, volunteer orientation agendas, and a resource library maintained by the LHRC during the 1990s. Topics include mental and physical health for lesbians, in particular HIV/AIDS prevention, breast cancer prevention and screenings, and safe sex practices. Also includes materials about the LHRC's plans for a Lesbian Health Clinic in North Carolina, its ongoing relationships with other community organizations, and workshop materials on feminism, health, and leadership. Photographers of Asheville, NC. Photographs (chiefly cabinet cards produced by Lindsey and Brown) of street scenes, landscapes, and tourist attractions in late 19th-century western N.C. Descriptive text is printed on the reverse side of many of the photographs. Most photographs were taken in the vicinity of the Swannanoa, Hot Springs, the French Broad River, Round Knob, Hickory Nut Gap, Buck Forest, Highlands, and Asheville. Contains photographs of the Battery Park Hotel, Chimney Rock, Hooker's Mill, McElroy Tunnel, Devil's Pulpit, Paint Rock, the Seven Sisters, the Swannanoa tunnel stockade, the Murphy Division, Devil's Slip Gap, the Western North Carolina Railroad and U.S. Mail boys. Life Savers are a brand of hard and soft candies first produced in 1912, currently owned by Mars. Collection consists of approximately 150 items: matted advertising, display and promotional designs; black and white photographs; and negatives that depict a variety of campaigns to market Life Savers in early and mid-century United States. Included are photographs of models in various poses; candy displays (including displays of competitors such as Curtiss's Baby Ruth/Butterfinger and Pine Bros. Glycerin Tablets); celebrities posing with the candy in endorsement or other promotional campaign; street vendors (Life Savers Sampler Girls); and images of placements of the candy in film productions. Celebrities include Ann Rutherford, Edgar Bergen, George McManus, George Raft, Jack Benny, Lou Costello, Maggie Jiggs and Virginia Mayo. Images produced by a number of prominent photographers and agencies, including Acme Newspictures, Ewing Galloway, General Outdoor, Guy Gillette, Hyman Fink, Keystone View, McArthur Advertising, Shigeta-Wright, and the Vacuum Candy Machinery Company. The Picture File was created and maintained beginning in the 1950s by the Duke University Manuscript Department staff and its institutional successors as a vertical file of pictorial works separated from manuscript collections as well as acquired individually. The collection is large and diverse, with images dating from the 18th through the 20th centuries. Engravings feature prominently, with photographs a close second. The predominant genre is portraits of political and military leaders, authors, artists, physicians, scientists, and others. Members of the Duke family and others from Durham, N.C. are also present. In the Socialist Party Series there are numerous images of leader Eugene Debs. Topics range widely, with a focus on American history, including the Revolutionary and Civil Wars; history and culture of the southern U.S.; and U.S. and European politics. A significant number of individuals in the People Series are African Americans, ranging from individual studio portraits to groups of individuals and racist caricatures and cartoons; a smaller number are of Native Americans.

Collection comprises 85 13x19 inch photographic prints and other documents related to the exhibit, "Phone Home Durham, 2015." The images were all taken by 50 residents of Durham County, North Carolina, chiefly with mobile phones but also with handheld cameras, and are mostly color digital prints, with a few black-and-white prints. The photographers focused on urban settings, although there are a few rural images taken in Durham County. The images reflect society and customs in 21st century Durham, with subject content including protests relating to race issues, street scenes, graffiti, abandoned houses, local shops and businesses, industrial buildings, and a few landscapes with trees and sunsets. The exhibit prints are accompanied by exhibit guides and other publicity related to the 2015 exhibition, several photographers' statements, and the original exhibit proposal by Duke University professor and photographer Tom Rankin. The exhibit was co-curated by Aaron Canipe, Alexa Dilworth, Jeremy Lange, and Jim Lee. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Seven creative projects produced by students in Photographic Memory: Photo Albums, Photobooks, & Zines, taught by Lisa McCarty in Spring 2016 at Duke University. The one zine and six photobooks utilize photographs and ephemera from their personal archives, and document representations of women in art; a morning walk in Durham, N.C.; Duke students at a horse race in South Carolina; the Pan Mass bicycle charity event in Massachusetts; the rapid changes in downtown Durham, N.C.; a ferry service in Hong Kong; and U.S. war memorials. Through their work, the students explored aspects of the interplay of text and image, methods for sequential storytelling, basic layout and design techniques, as well as methods for production and distribution. Olive Pierce (1925-2016) was a documentary photographer based in Massachusetts and Maine. The collection comprises several hundred black-and-white photographic prints taken by Pierce over her long career. The earliest images (1960s) feature landscapes and individuals in Maine, a subject Pierce returned to throughout her life. Other subjects include: political protests in Cambridge, Massachusetts and life in the Jefferson Park neighborhood in Cambridge during the 1970s; high school students in Cambridge (1980s); the lives of Iraqi children in war zones in 1999 and 2003, and protests in the U.S. against that war. Also included are print publications featuring Pierce's photographs; publicity for exhibits and lectures; Pierce's 1987 guide to teaching photography; a video on DVD and audio lecture about her work; some correspondence; unpublished book mock-ups and a memoir/diary; a self-published illustrated partial memoir (2014); approximately 2557 film negatives; and about 40 slides featuring images of her early life and family. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Parker Pillsbury (1809–1898) was an American minister, lecturer, newspaper editor, and advocate for abolition and women's rights. The collection is composed of 33 pocket diaries Parker Pillsbury kept for the years 1864 to 1896. The diaries offer a consistent, uninterrupted record of Pillsbury's life during these years, particularly his work fighting for the rights of women and African Americans and promoting Free Religion. Pillsbury records his interactions with leading social reformers of the nineteenth century, including William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Abby Kelley and Stephen S. Foster, Gerrit Smith, Wendell Phillips, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott, Robert Ingersoll, Charles Sumner, Henry Ward Beecher and Theodore Tilton among many others. His entries occasionally are accompanied by tipped in newspaper clippings about national events.
