The LeRoy T. Walker Africa News Service Archive is an extensive resource file assembled by ANS over the course of two decades in support of its news gathering efforts about Africa-related issues and U. S. foreign policy towards Africa. The collection spans the years from approximately 1960 to 1995, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1978 through 1994. Newspaper clippings, magazine articles, press releases, newsletters, brochures, and reports comprise the collection. Much of the material is gathered from mainstream media sources and government documentation in the United States, Europe, Africa, and other parts of the world. In addition, the collection includes significant resources from alternative, minority, and special interest presses world-wide that may be difficult to locate elsewhere. The archive contains scarce and difficult-to-locate materials such as numerous publications produced by non-governmental organizations and grass-roots/community groups that are/were involved in efforts related to independence movements, economic development, and human rights issues in Africa.

R.C. Jim Brown served as copy group head of Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborne (BBDO) during the years 1945-1962. The Jim Brown Papers contain materials representing the years of Brown's employment with BBDO. The collection consists of a scrapbook of advertising proofs and a series of proposals relating to BBDO clients' sponsorship of television specials. Included in the scrapbook are proofs for publication in trade magazines, newspapers, movie posters, and comic books, with most of the materials dating from 1945-1946. Companies and products represented include Royal Crown Cola (Cott Beverages), Ethyl Cleaner (Ethyl Corporation), Raleigh Cigarettes, Kool Cigarettes, Continental Can Company and the American Broadcasting Company. The set of proposals date from 1955-1959 and includes BBDO strategies for product placement in advertisements and in the television programs, as well as rate schedules for various marketing tactics. Companies represented include Du Pont, Westclox, Bristol-Myers, General Electric Company and Campbell Soup Company. Television programs to be sponsored include Lassie, The Donna Reed Show, Playhouse 90, and Wonderful Town.

Community and labor movement organizer in Durham, N.C.; chair of the Triangle Friends of the United Farm Workers; board member of the National Farm Worker Ministry; member of the Farmworker Ministry Commission, N.C. Council of Churches. Accession (2009-0279) (40,500 items; 54.0 lin. ft.; dated 1970-2006) includes Preiss's personal papers as well as organizational records from her role in the Triangle Friends of the United Farm Workers (TFUFW), the National Farmworker Ministry (NFWM), the Farmworker Ministry Commission, and the AFL-CIO's Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC). Each of these organizations worked to improve the lives of farmworkers through unionizing, educating the public about the origins of food, and pressuring farms and companies through boycotts, petitions, and publicity. Includes materials from UFW campaigns and boycotts that Preiss helped organize in Durham, such as Campbell's, Gallo wines, Prime mushrooms, strawberries, California grapes, and Mt. Olive pickles. Includes publications and photographs from visits from labor organizers such as Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. Also present are materials from labor issues such as pesticide use, migrant education, the H-2 Workers program, child labor, slavery, and farmworker health. The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Edward G. Wilson was an executive with JWT from 1930 until his retirement in 1971, and held the positions of General Counsel, Executive Vice-President and Secretary of the Company. The Edward G. Wilson Papers span the period 1906-1991 and includes clippings, correspondence, inter-office memoranda, reports, writings, speeches and personal diaries that highlight Wilson's 40 year career (1930-1971) as an executive with the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT). The bulk of materials fall between 1946 and 1971, and covers the period from Wilson's return to JWT following military service in World War II until his retirement. As General Counsel and head of JWT's Legal Department, Wilson oversaw contractual relations pertaining primarily to the sponsorship of radio and television programs for a number of clients--including DeBeers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., the Eastman Kodak Company, the Ford Motor Company, the Scott Paper Company and Unilever. The collection reveals JWT's relationships with radio and television personalities--such as Fred Allen and Edgar Bergen--and professional organizations including the Radio Writers Guild and the Television Writers of America. In addition, materials in the collection touch on the anti-communist movement and blacklisting within the U.S. entertainment industry of the 1950s--involving personalities such as Jean Muir and John Henry Faulk, among others. The collection also includes records from a number of JWT international offices, with heavier representation from offices in London; Bombay (Mumbai), India; and Johannesburg, South Africa, along with records kept by some of Wilson's predecessors, such as Donald Foote and Sam Meek, and the South African advertising executive and politician James Hamilton Russell.

Bates Worldwide advertising agency (Bates) was established in 1940 by former executives of the Benton & Bowles agency. It grew to become one of the largest agencies in the U.S. until its demise in 2003. Bates began as a simple proprietorship, but as the company grew its organizational structure took on different forms: a partnership, then a corporation before becoming a publicly traded transnational entity, and finally becoming a subsidiary in a global holding company. From the 1970s on, Bates' growth and international expansion was fueled by a long series of mergers, partnerships and acquisitions that continued until the company was itself acquired, first by the Saatchi & Saatchi and later by the WPP Group. Materials in the collection relate to Bates' permutations into a variety of corporate entities, including Ted Bates & Co., Ted Bates, Inc., Backer Spielvogel Bates, and Bates Worldwide, Inc., along with its subsidiaries (such as Campbell-Mithun and Kobs and Draft) and parent organizations (Cordiant Communications Group, Saatchi & Saatchi). Thus, the collection provides a window into the larger corporate culture of mergers, consolidations, acquisitions and takeovers that led to the formation of giant transnational advertising conglomerates and marked a profound shift in the landscape of the advertising industry during the late 20th century. The Bates Worldwide, Inc. Records spans the years 1934-2003 and includes correspondence, corporate policy manuals, photographs, publications, graphic designs, print advertisements, electronic records and videocassettes that document the activities of this major global advertising agency over the course of its corporate life. Bates built its early reputation as an advertising agency with a particular talent for promoting pharmaceutical products (Carter's Pills, Anacin analgesics) and common household goods (Mars candies, Wonder bread, Palmolive soap, Colgate dental cream). Advertising policies developed around a philosophy Bates called the Unique Selling Proposition (USP), which informed an imperative to identify and promote a single, unique and compelling reason for consumers to use any given product or service. As the company grew into a global business, USP evolved into more complex forms, including the Bates Brand Wheel. Major clients included Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co., Carter-Wallace Corporation, Hyundai America, the Joint Recruiting Advertising Program of the combined U.S. Armed Services, M&M/Mars Inc., Miller Brewing Company, Pfizer, the U.S. Navy and Wendy's International. There is also some information on the company's founder, Ted Bates, as well as on Rosser Reeves, Bates' first copy writer and the chief architect of the USP concept.

The Pepperidge Farm Company was begun in 1937 by Margaret Rudkin of Fairfield, Connecticut. It is currently a subsidiary of the Campbell Soup Company. The Pepperidge Farm Advertising and Promotional Materials Collection consists of brochures and packets related to promotional incentives, photographs of store displays, proofs, and promotional recipes from the period roughly 1957-1967. Includes photographs of Pepperidge Farm Stuffing and Pepperidge Farm Party Rolls store displays; a display sign for Pepperidge Farm White Bread; color and newsprint proofs for White Bread and Rye Bread; as well as books of prize options for company promotional offers. Also includes a packet of materials detailing the 1966 Advertising and Promotional Program, and a promotional book of recipes authored by Margaret Rudkin. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

John Benjamin Harris is Professor Emeritus of Management and Marketing at Virginia State University. He pioneered governmental and commercial awareness of African American advertising markets and, in the 1970s, became the Director of the Virginia State Office of Minority Business Enterprise and Special Assistant to the Governor for Minority Enterprise. The John Benjamin Harris Papers span the years 1955-1991 and include scholarly articles, corporate reports and proposals, product labels, 16mm film reels, and audio tapes. Materials represent Harris' academic and professional work at New York University and Virginia State University as well as his work for the Virginia State Office of Minority Business Enterprise. Topics touched on in the collection include minority business enterprises; minority markets and minorities (especially African Americans) as consumers; and African American mass media. In addition, the collection reflects Harris' work for the advertising industry with employers including Cunningham & Walsh, Inc., the Leo Burnett Company, Inc., and the Ted Bates Company. Roy Lightner was an advertising and marketing executive, primarily with N.W. Ayer & Son agency, from which he retired in 1980, and with Carden & Cherry Advertising of Nashville, Tenn. The Roy Lightner Collection of Antique Advertisements spans the years 1871-2009 and includes primarily print advertisements clipped from U.S. magazines. Also present are proofs of print advertisements and 16mm reels of television commercials, much of which was produced by the N.W. Ayer & Son agency during Lightner's career there. Advertisements predominantly focus on automobiles, railroads, insurance companies and manufacturers of brand name consumer goods. Over 300 companies are represented in the collection, including AT&T, Buick, Cadillac, Campbell's, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Coca-Cola, Dodge, Du Pont, Kodak, Ford, General Electric, General Mills, General Motors, Lincoln-Mercury, Metropolitan Life, Oldsmobile, Packard, Plymouth, Pontiac, RCA, and Studebaker.Acquired as part of the John W. Joseph DiBona is a cookbook collector and Associate Professor Emeritus in the Program in Education at Duke University. The collection is named in honor of his daughter Nicole DiBona Peterson. Collection spans the years 1851-2005 and includes cookbooks, hang tags, inserts, recipe cards and guides, operating instructions, owner's manuals and other promotional materials that address cooking and kitchen arts.
