Businessman, land owner, and state legislator, of Middleway, West Virginia. Personal, family, and business papers, the majority concerning the operation of a country store by Grantham and James W. League. Includes papers relating to Grantham's local agency for the Arlington Mutual Life Insurance Co., and to his political career as a member of the newly-formed state of West Virginia legislature, 1872-1881. Collection includes daybooks, memorandum books, and a two volumes of House bills in the West Virginia legislature, 1872-1873.

John Willis created these six composite color images to articulate and consider the connections between photographic portraits taken by the Khmer Rouge of young people in Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Penh, where an estimated 14,000-20,000 victims were executed from about 1975-1979, and images of deteriorating mural frescoes at the Emperor's Palace, also in Phnom Penh. The portraits are said to be of prison workers, and were exhibited in 2008 at the prison, now a genocide museum. Five of the historical photographs are portraits; the sixth shows a group of what appears to be Khmer Rouge soldiers in uniform. The photographer's images show that the original photographs on exhibit were defaced with graffiti and other marks by visitors to the museum. The neglected Emperor's Palace frescoes, whose images flank the victim's portraits in Willis' work, depict scenes from the Cambodian epic poem, the Reamker, which speaks to human issues of love, revenge, loyalty, and trust. The color inkjet prints were created from 2009 to 2011. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Barrister, politician, literary critic, and author. The John Wilson Croker Papers are organized into the following series: Indexed Correspondence, Non-Indexed Correspondence, and Other Papers. The collection consists primarily of letters from English and Irish politicians and personages to Croker, and provide a rich source of material on Great Britain's politics and government in the 19th century.

Collection comprises sermons, teaching materials, writings, and other professional papers of John Wilson Fleming, Baptist pastor and professor of history, philosophy, and religion at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Handwritten drafts of sermons date from the 1950s to the 2000s, and make up almost half of the collection. Other papers include: drafts of speeches, articles, and an unpublished full-length novel, Girded with strength; church programs; lecture notes, syllabi, and a few student papers; Shaw University administrative papers; papers pertaining to politics and school districts in Raleigh, North Carolina, 1964; and some biographical materials, including a resumé and obituary. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

John W. Williams was a Philadelphia lawyer. A small collection of legal papers, correspondence, and clippings chiefly concerning an 1835 lawsuit in which Robert Aitken of Baltimore alleged that a mulatto girl living in Philadelphia was Emily Winder, the daughter of Milly Winder. Milly Winder was Aitken's former slave whom he had freed in 1824, while keeping her daughter as his slave. Aitken claimed that the child had been stolen from him and given to Jacob Gilmore and his wife, free African Americans, to raise as their child. John W. Williams handled Aitken's suit for the girl's return. Includes affidavits, subpoenas, and notes on the testimonies of both black and white witnesses for the defense and the prosecution, including the testimony of Milly Winder, who told of her attempts to locate her daughter after she was freed.

Poet and book store owner in Charleston, SC. Collection predominantly contains World War II-era correspondence between lovers/partners John Zeigler and Edwin Peacock and their close friend George Scheirer, along with Zeigler's correspondence with his family. After the war, Zeigler and Peacock co-founded of a bookstore in Charleston, S.C., while Scheirer lived most of his adult life in Washington, DC. Recipients of Zeigler's correspondence and names mentioned in letters throughout the collection include family members of all three men, as well as friends, including Carson McCullers. Other materials include some documentation of Scheirer's work as a bookbinder; selected copies of Zeigler's writing and publications; photographs of all three individuals; and official military documents relating to Zeigler's and Peacock's service during WWII.

The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies (JCPES) is a nonprofit American research and public policy institution, or think tank, founded in 1970 to aid black elected officials in creating effective policy and successfully serve their constituents. The collection includes subject files, writings, publications, photographs, audiovisual materials, and electronic records pertaining to JCPES events, programs, and projects especially of concern to African Americans in the late 20th century. Collection acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Jomo Joka Omowale, born as Cleveland McKinley Davis and also known as Eric Thompson, is a parolee in North Carolina who spent much of his life imprisoned in New York and Virginia. He was a leader of the Attica prison riot in 1971. Collection includes court transcripts, legal papers and correspondence, court documents, photographs, press coverage and clippings, and internal prison policies and procedures from Omowale's many years in various prisons. Cases include armed robbery in Virginia, the Attica riots and subsequent trials, three trials regarding a police shooting in Brooklyn, and a murder of a drug dealer in Virginia. Omowale was convicted in the final case, and his pursuit of parole in Virginia following the elimination of parole in the 1990s is another significant component of the collection. Other materials include prisoner poetry and writings, personal correspondence between Jomo and his family, prisoner poetry, Attica Brothers Legal Defense materials, and court documents regarding a White Panther Party trial in 1970. Also includes hundreds of mugshots from New York. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive (Duke University).

Banker and manufacturer of High Point, N.C. May have been a Quaker. The Jonathan E. Cox Papers chiefly consist of the business records of a banker and manufacturer from High Point, North Carolina. Records date from 1885-1938 and include many boxes of business and personal correspondence, chiefly letters to Cox; and a series of manuscript volumes, including journals, daybooks, order books, trial balance books, ledgers, profit-and-loss accounts, bill books, inventory records, rent book, check stubs, mill contracts, a letter book, and an account book of Joseph D. Cox. There are few personal items, but there is some biographical information on Cox's daughter, Clara I. Cox, a Quaker also living in High Point, who was active in civic and humanitarian affairs in that city.

Documentary photographer based in New York State. The color images in the Jonathan Hyman Photographs collection were taken by Hyman from 2002 to 2011, and portray vernacular memorials and other forms of public remembering that express anger, sadness and patriotic emotions following the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. Images take the form of graphic art, signs, sculpture, body art, and graffiti. Iconic elements include the U.S. flag, eagles, and the Twin Towers. Canvases for these forms of expression include clothing, buildings, vehicles, and tombstones. Most of the 33 large 20x24" inkjet prints were featured in Duke University exhibit Flesh & Metal, Bodies & Buildings: Works from Jonathan Hyman's Archive of 9/11 Vernacular Memorials, curated by Pedro Lasch. The exhibit was on display in the Rubenstein Photography Gallery from 9 May-16 October 2011. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.
