Chris Johnson farmworker photographs, 1990s 1.5 Linear Feet (2 boxes)

Collection comprises 124 black-and-white digital photographic prints taken by North Carolina photographer Chris Johnson, portraying North Carolina farmworkers and migrant laborers in work settings as well as in their field camps and homes, many of which are revealed as dilapidated and unsanitary. Several series document labor organization and protests, including a five-year strike protesting working conditions for Mount Olive Pickle company workers. Other subjects in the images include the children and families of the farmworkers; volunteer teachers and organizers, some of whom are from the organization Student Action with Farmworkers; tobacco and Christmas tree growing in North Carolina; and street scenes from the border crossing areas of Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros, Mexico. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Christina Rossetti letter, 1881 December 17 0.1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Collection consists of a single letter from the Pre-Raphealite poet Christina Rossetti to an unnamed recipient in the publishing industry. She grants him permission to use poems from three of her published collections in an upcoming "Fine Art Book for Christmas 1882." Rossetti states that there should be no variation of the text from the source material, and that she chose those three collections because she personally holds their copyright.

Christopher Burkett is a photographer from Vernonia (Columbia County), Oregon. Collection includes twenty-eight Cibachrome photographic prints taken by photographer Christopher Burkett of Christian icons appearing in two 15th century Ethiopic manuscript books of scriptures (MS. Ethiopic 34 and 35) located in the Rubenstein Library of Duke University. The images were painted by two distinct hands, probably copying the images from an original and earlier unidentified source. Themes include a series of scenes from the life of Christ, and images include angels, St. George, and the Virgin Mary.

Christopher Sims photographs, 2005-2018 3 Linear Feet (3 boxes)

Christopher Sims is a documentary photographer from Atlanta, Georgia, currently on the faculty at Duke University, Durham, N.C. The 71 color digital photographs in this collection appear in his book, The Pretend Village: Inside the U.S. Military Training Grounds (2021). The photographs were taken by Sims from 2005-2018 at fictitious Iraqi and Afghan villages constructed on U.S. Army bases in remote areas of North Carolina and Louisiana, and in Death Valley, California. Images taken between military training exercises show actors, many of them real-life immigrant Afghans and Iraqis, playing police officers, doctors, craftspeople, farmers, and café owners. Images taken during training include American soldiers in motion or at rest, fictional civilians and insurgents, and simulations of dead or wounded soldiers and civilians. Other images are of buildings, streets, fake interiors, props, rubble, and graffiti and murals. The inkjet prints measure 17x22 inches. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Chuck Stone papers, 1931-2007 and undated 36.2 Linear Feet (18,650 items)

Charles Sumner (Chuck) Stone was a prominent African-American journalist, with a career spanning from his early days at the New York Age (1958-1959) to his position as editor and columnist at the Philadelphia Daily News (1972-1991). Between 1965 and 1967 he was special assistant and press secretary to New York representative Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. He served as mediator between the police and suspected criminals for over 20 years, most notably in his negotiation of the Graterford Prison hostage crisis in 1981. He is the author of multiple books, from political analyses to a novel about his time with Powell and (in 2003) a children's book. He was also an educator for many years, as Professor of English at the University of Delaware from 1985-1991 and Walter Spearman Professor of Journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill from 1991 to 2005, when he retired. The collection contains clippings, correspondence, writings, scrapbooks, photographs, video, audio, research files, and printed materials pertaining to the life and career of Chuck Stone. The papers span the years 1931-2007 and document Stone's journalism career and writings, his political career and relationship with Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., and his role as an educator.

Cipe Pineles papers, 1925-2005 and undated 18.0 Linear Feet

Cipe Pineles was an Austrian-born Jewish artist noted for innovations in magazine design, illustration and typography, based primarily in New York. Collection includes correspondence, photographs, drawings and illustrations and other design work, paintings, advertising and promotional materials, drafts of manuscripts, recipes, financial records and other printed materials that document Pineles's professional and private life, including correspondence and service orders during World War II. Collection also includes materials relating to a number of individuals: Ben Shahn, Carol Burton Fripp, Edward Sorel, Jay Leyda, John Alcorn, Mehemed Fehmy Agha, Sidney Meyers, Will Burtin and William Golden. Institutions represented in the collection include Alliance graphique internationale, American Institute of Graphic Arts, Art Directors Club, Harvard Graduate School of Design, Lincoln Center, Parsons School of Design and the Pratt Institute. Civil Rights Movement and Wayside Theatre photographs, 1960s 0.2 Linear Feet (1 box)

Collection comprises 18 black-and-white photographs taken in the 1960s, assembled by a private collector and organized into two distinct groups: nine journalistic photographs documenting civil rights movement events, some credited to Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) photographers Cliff Vaughs, Danny Lyon, and Rufus Hinton, with others unattributed; and nine prints of an unidentified multi-racial dramatic performance, circa mid-1960s, found in the archives of the Wayside Theatre in Middletown, Virginia. The Civil Rights prints typically include detailed press captions on the backs, and include images of injured and jailed demonstrators, police, bombed-out churches, and portraits of activists Fannie Lou Hamer and Atlanta's Markham Street rent protest leader Willie Williams. All the prints except one measure roughly 8x10 inches. Acquired as part of the John Hope Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

Civil War Manuscripts Map collection, 1861-1865 1 Linear Feet (14 items)

Sketch maps from the Civil War period representing geographic areas in Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and one unidentified location. These maps chiefly depict roads, waterways, mountain ranges, fortifications, counties, cities, and towns. There are two battlefield maps present, including Bull Run (Va., 1861; a Confederate map) and Spring Hill (Tenn., 1864). Most maps are unsigned; however, there are maps drawn by A. M. Thornton, Barbette Sims, and Edward Fontaine, as well as Confederate Army engineers A. B. DeSaulles and Jeremy F. Gilmer. Primarily drawn in ink on paper or linen cloth. Sizes of maps vary between 24 x 20 cm. and 63 x 60 cm.

Advertising and business executive. President of Dictaphone Corporation (1922-1927, 1948-1960), based in New York. President of Associated Advertising Clubs of the World and International Advertising Association (precursor to American Advertising Federation). C.K. Woodbridge papers include correspondence, text and notes for speeches and writings, clippings, scrapbooks, black-and-white photographs, audio belt recordings and other printed materials. Topics addressed include the management, training and compensation of sales personnel; women in the advertising business; corporate management and public relations; internationalization of advertising and marketing and the role of professional organizations; and product development (importation of margarine from the Netherlands to the U.S. and Canada; popularization of dictating equipment in office spaces). Clarence Holte advertising portfolio, 1944 and undated 1 Linear Feet

Resident of Harlem, N.Y., advertising executive, and bibliofile. Collection comprises one spiral-bound portfolio (21 pgs.) containing clippings, drawings, and typewritten notes, intended as a prospectus for a proposed new magazine supplement targeted at African Americans, to be carried in newspapers nationwide. In the prospectus, Holte explained the historical role played by African American newspapers in their community, as well as economic growth that made them stable consumers and an attractive targeted market. The advertising opportunity was directed at Lever Brothers Company. Includes 5 pages of correspondence between Holte, Lever Brothers, and THIS WEEK MAGAZINE, all laid-in at the end of the prospectus, that made it clear that Holte's proposal was rejected. Clarence Louis Frank Gohdes papers, 1811-1990s and undated, bulk 1905-1981, bulk 1905-1981 6.2 Linear Feet (11 boxes) 4650 Items

Collection consists of research materials, correspondence, writings, clippings and other printed materials, and a few photographs, mainly from the latter half of Gohdes's career. The earliest date (1811) refers to reproductions of original research materials. Correspondence with other American Literature teachers and authors, combined with other materials relating to Gohdes's institutional and organizational affiliations, in particular with Duke University, the Modern Language Association (MLA), and the journal AMERICAN LITERATURE, comprise the most substantive aspects of this collection. They provide insight into American literary scholarship in the early and mid-twentieth century. Noted authors and scholars of the time whose letters and other writings are in the collection include Alexander Blackburn, Oscar Cargill, Lewis Chase, Robert Elias, Norman Foerster, Arthur Rubin, Arthur Quinn, and Upton Sinclair. Original manuscripts by Gohdes, inscribed reprints of writings by his colleagues, and materials relating to many major British and American literary figures, make up the rest of the collection. There is substantial material on Edgar Allen Poe and American humor. The collection also includes papers documenting Gohdes's research and writing for his last book project, a history of the muscadine grape in North Carolina entitled Scuppernong, North Carolina's Grape and Its Wines. Clarissa Sligh papers, 1950-2010 70 Linear Feet

Clarissa Sligh is an artist and author of works such as Wrongly Bodied, Reading Dick and Jane with Me, What's Happening With Momma? Jake in Transition, and It Wasn't Little Rock. Collection includes materials relating to Sligh's career as an artist, with particular focus on her various projects and exhibitions in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Projects represented include Jake In Transition/Wrongly Bodied, Witness to Dissent/It Wasn't Little Rock, Coast to Coast, Sandy Ground, Malcolm X: Man, Ideal, Icon, What's Happening With Momma? and an NC Reunion/Slavery project, along with several others. Sligh's files frequently include correspondence, research materials, drafts of essays and exhibition plans, clippings and other source materials, contact sheets and slides, and occasionally exhibit pieces and texts from the actual installation. The Classical Club, founded in 1910, was a social academic club for male students and faculty of Trinity College (now Duke University). Female students joined the club in 1924. The club promoted interest in the language, literature, and art of ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Materials include minutes, constitutions, bylaws, a sketch, calendars, membership lists, correspondence, a draft of a paper, and clippings. Major subjects include Trinity College history, Duke University history, student groups, male college students, study of classical languages and appreciation of classical literature. Clear Channel is a multi-media communications company based in San Antonio, Tex. Collection includes audiovisual materials; black-and-white and color photographs; glass plate negatives, memoranda and correspondence; research reports; slides; and other printed materials. Most of the images depict outdoor advertising designs and billboard locations in the Los Angeles and San Francisco, Calif. areas. A wide range of products and services are depicted, including airlines; automobiles and automotive services; banks; cosmetics and health care products; events and entertainment; food and beverages; household goods; tobacco products and travel. The bulk of images depict work performed under the names of Foster and Kleiser and the Patrick Media Group. Acquired by the John W. Clear Pictures Film Footage collection, 1991-1996 50 Linear Feet 150 Items

The collection consists of film footage (sync reels, workprint reels, stock footage, research tapes, etc.) created in the making of the film Clear Pictures, a documentary on Reynolds Price by Charles Guggenheim. Interviews of friends and colleagues were recorded, as well as of Price himself, documenting his range of activity and long literary career. A few paper files and electronic data are also included. See the Reynolds Price Papers also in this repository. The addition (2 items; dated January 23, 1990) contains two 3/4" U-matic videocassette tapes.

Clement C. Clay papers, 1846-1970 and undated 3.5 Linear Feet 2,803 Items

Physician; member of the Clay family of Alabama; headed a photographic unit in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy in WWII; also served in the Hospital Division of the Medical Corps in that war. Later served as a hospital administrator and taught at a number of universities including the American University in Beirut, University of Chicago, Columbia University and Yale University. His consulting service included work for N.C. Memorial Hospital. Collection includes Clay family correspondence, Clement Clay's professional and military correspondence, and writings, including a number of presentations and reports. There are also scrapbooks, and two photographs of C.C. Clay, II as a child.

Clement Vollmer papers, 1898-1983 3 Linear Feet 1,000 Items

Clement Vollmer joined the German Languages and Literature Department at Duke University in 1926, where he remained until his retirement in 1956. In 1918, he published The American Novel in Germany. Professor Vollmer served as chair of the department during the 1950s, as president of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, and was a member of numerous academic societies. Includes correspondence, recommendations, faculty meeting minutes, German Department memoranda, grade books and department enrollment statistics. Also includes date books, address books and diaries kept by Maude Hugo Vollmer (Mrs. Clement Vollmer). Inclusive years are 1898-1983.

Clinton White Toms Memorial scrapbook, 1928-1936 2 Linear Feet (1 item)

Clinton W. Toms (1868-1936) was a trustee of Duke University from 1901-1932, and was president of Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company from 1928-1936. The collection consists of a 13x15 inch scrapbook, unbound, containing 19 double-sided pages. The book includes materials from Toms' memorial service and death, such as letters of condolence (all within their original envelopes), calling cards, newspaper clippings, and obituaries; as well as containing correspondence between him and his children, and other miscellaneous materials collected and preserved over the later years of his life.

The Coca-Cola Company was founded in Atlanta in 1886 by John Pemberton. The Star Salesman Kit was part of a program developed to train Coca-Cola salesmen. The Coca-Cola Company Star Salesman Kit dates from 1949-1951 and consists of numbered training lessons, memorabilia buttons, 35mm filmstrips and accompanying phonograph records, which together comprise a training program for Coca-Cola sales employees. Topics covered include increasing sales, product placement, stock magazines, coolers and vending machines, and selling to women. Acquired as a part of the John W. Cochrane Family papers, 1777-1957 and undated 8.9 Linear Feet (16 boxes and 1 oversize tube) 4125 Items

Arthur Auckland Leopold Pedro Cochrane served in the British Navy from 1839-1886, where he fought in the Anglo-Chinese war and rose to the rank of admiral. He was also instrumental in administering the Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company during its early years. His brother, Ernest Grey Lambton Cochrane was also active in the Royal Navy from 1847-1873, participating in the British campaign to suppress the slave trade in West Africa during the 1860s. He was also a landowner and landlord of the Redcastle Estate in County Donegal, Ireland, and served in his later years as High Sheriff for County Donegal. The collection contains correspondence, legal and financial documents, notes and writings, notebooks and diaries, clippings, printed books and pamphlets, photographs, maps, charts, diagrams and technical drawings pertaining to the lives and careers of Arthur Auckland Leopold Pedro and Ernest Grey Lambton Cochrane, and to the Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company. The papers span the years 1777-1957, with the bulk of the collection being dated from 1850-1905, and document the naval careers of Arthur Auckland Leopold Pedro Cochrane and Ernest Grey Lambton Cochrane, the role of the Cochrane family as landlords in Western Ulster, and the development of the colonial asphalt industry in Trinidad during the 19th century.

40 volumes of Tatiana Warsher's bound manuscript, Codex Topographicus Pompeianus, detailing the archaeology and architecture of Pompeii, Italy. Volumes include typescripts, maps, photographs, and foldout pages describing streets, buildings, and art in and collected from Pompeii. Col. David S. Wilson family papers, 1847-1909 2.5 Linear Feet

Col. David S. Wilson (1825-1881), originally from Ohio, was a lawyer and editor in Dubuque, Iowa. He served with the Sixth Cavalry of Iowa from 1862-1864 and also practiced law in San Francisco and Washington, D.C., during the 1860s and 1870s. He was appointed circuit judge and district judge in Dubuque and served until 1878. He and his wife, Henrietta, had four children: Henry, Gertrude, John, and David. The family's papers consists largely of personal correspondence between D.S. and Henrietta, as well as a significant amount of correspondence between the couple and their children. Also included in the collection are a selection of D.S. Wilson's legal and political materials, such as a diary from his 1860 term in the Iowa General Assembly, miscellaneous court case briefings, and some materials from his work as an attorney for the New Idria Quicksilver Mining Company.

Collection consists largely of a two-volume diary, 1895-1919, of Isabel Fleury Coleman, a twenty-three volume set of diaries, 1904-1971, belonging to Mary Augusta Coleman, and photographs of Fleury-Coleman family members and some of their residences. There are also two volumes pertaining to Mary Coleman's personal accounts and the "French Broad River Garden Club, 1967-1969," a few items of correspondence and genealogy, and a number of clippings and printed materials. Topics covered by the materials include music instruction (violin and piano), women's society life in Asheville, N.C., and women's travel in European countries during the 20th century.

Collection on Cuban migrants in indefinite detention, 1995-1999 0.25 Linear Feet

Cuban people emigrated to the United States as refugees in 1980 during the Mariel Boatlift. A small percentage of them were imprisoned in the U.S. on felony charges, which are cause for deportation under immigration law. After a 1987 prison riot where Cuban detainees protested deportation, the migrants were granted an indefinite moratorium on deportation and a fair review of their case. A decade later many were still in federal detention centers awaiting review of their case, and they often wrote to Amnesty International for help. Collection consists largely of unsolicited correspondence from Cuban migrants written to Sarah Town while she interned with Amnesty International's Refugee Office. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

The Committee on African Studies formed in 1965 as part of the Center for International Studies at Duke University. The committee was composed of faculty from the departments of history, political science, anthropology, and economics. Its mission included supporting research in Africa, publishing articles and sponsoring lectures on African studies, and developing African studies curricula for middle school and high school students. Records date from 1967 to 1976 and consist of correspondence, papers and proposals, course materials, reprints, and sound recordings. The Committee's work focused on cultures including the Dan, Mbuti, Somali, and Zulu. The Confederate States of America (CSA) was formed in 1861 by eleven states in the southern United States that declared secession from the U.S. in order to protect their right to own slaves. The CSA collapsed in 1865 after its defeat in the American Civil War by Union forces. Collection was assembled from various sources and includes a variety of materials originating from administrative bodies within the Confederate States of America, including the Army, Executive Department, Congress, state governments and agencies, and the Navy. Connecticut Abortion Case Testimony letter, 1853 June 5 0.1 Linear Feet

Collection comprises a letter from "C.H.H" to a colleague, regarding an ongoing Conn. trial in an abortion case involving "Mrs. Green," "Gen. Walker," and "Mr. Mitchell." Abortion was legal in Conn. until 1821, when it became the first state to explicitly outlaw the practice. The text includes: "Mrs. Green began to testify on Friday night--but was taken sick & had to be sent home. That she was really sick, there can be no doubt. But whether it was the journey &c. or agitation & excitement as to what she was required to testify--is still a mystery. I want you to send me her history & that of her family ... so as to shape our cross examination.... She is expected to testify that the abortion matter was all gotten up by Genl W--without there being any truth in it--She began by saying that Genl W. called on her at Naugatuck [Conn.].... Then [abbr. "said"?] that Gen Walker had been speaking ill of his daughter & also one of hers. That he Walker had [abbr. "said"?] that he had given medicine to produce abortion....They are going to destroy Genl W's testimony--by all kinds of evidence contradicting him--if they possibly can."

The Consumer-Farmer Milk Cooperative was a dairy cooperative serving the New York City area, established in 1937 and operated until 1971.
