David B. McCall was an advertising executive and humanitarian. He was the originator of the idea for the children's educational television series Schoolhouse Rock. The David B. McCall Papers span the years 1939-1999, with the bulk documenting the years 1980-1994, and are comprised of clippings, correspondence, business reports, photographs, scrapbooks, speeches and writings, videocassettes, audio tapes and phonograph records. In particular, three main areas of McCall's career are represented: as an advertising executive and partner in agencies such as Young & Rubicam, Ogilvy Benson & Mather, McCaffrey & McCall, David J. Mahoney, Inc., the Sawyer Miller Group, and Shepardson Stern and Kaminsky; as a corporate director for the Hunter Fan Company, Save the Children, and two local radio broadcasting corporations, among others; and as a humanitarian involved with organizations such as the Committee for the Support of Roe v. Wade, CARE, and Refugees International. In addition, there is a substantial body of McCall's speeches and writings that reflect both the wide range of his professional and personal interests and commitments as well as his status as a public intellectual in high demand, as well as a number of files containing correspondence, clippings and articles concerning David Ogilvy, McCall's mentor in advertising. Major advertising campaigns represented in this collection include Mercedes Benz of North America, North American Philips, Life magazine, the American Can Company, Lever Brothers Company, and the Zippo Manufacturing Company, along with public relations work for such clients as the National Football League, Puerto Rico Telephone Company (PRTC), and the Regional Bell Operating Companies. Major humanitarian issues documented in the collection include the Unsell protest movement against the war in Vietnam, tobacco advertising aimed at children, land mine removal, refugee welfare, and support of abortion rights. McCall was also involved in political campaigns for a number of notable candidates, such as John Lindsay (New York), Harvey Gannt (North Carolina), George Kevarian (Massachusetts), Ramón Mitra (Philippines) and Mario Vargas Llosa (Peru). While McCall is recognized as the originator of the idea behind the popular children's educational television series Schoolhouse Rock!, the collection contains very little documentation concerning that project apart from a copy of the original soundtrack.

David B. Shatzer was a salesman in Franklin Co, Penna. Census records indicate that Shatzer may have also been a shoemaker at this time. Possibly b. 1841 in St. Thomas (Franklin Co.), Penna. Collection comprises a copy (48 pgs.) of "Pierce's Memorandum and Account Book designed for Farmers, Mechanics and all people" distributed by the World's Dispensary Medical Association. Half of the pages were printed with advertisements and testimonials for Pierce's pharmaceutical products, along with his articles on the diseases of women, men, liver, blood, and lungs. It also includes an advertisements for the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. The rest of the pages contain handwritten notes made by Shatzer regarding his sales of Downing's galvanic battery, which was likely an electronic device used to treat various ailments, including headaches, rheumatism, neuralgia, and joint pain. Shatzer primarily recorded testimonies about the effectiveness of the device, but a few notes provide his sales figures. In addition, some notes suggest that Shatzer also sold pictures, copies of the Lord's Prayer and other prayers, and a product in bottles. It is clear that all of his sales were in Franklin County.

Collection contains correspondence, account books, receipts, statements, and other papers, chiefly relating to David Bullock Harris's training at West Point (1829-1833), his military career, and his tobacco business in Virginia, Kentucky, and England. Includes Civil War military papers and maps, accounts of the sale of slaves, and accounts of trade with Brazil. Also present are letters from Frederick Overton Harris, David's father, while in the Virginia House of Delegates, and from Nathaniel W. Harris, his brother and business partner. Other correspondents include P. G. T. Beauregard, D. H. Mahan, and Sylvanus Thayer.

American-born missionary and photographer who lived in Haiti during the 1970s. The black and white and color images in the David Cutrell Photographs portray life in the village of La Hatte Cadet in Haiti in the 1970s. Missionary David Cutrell lived in La Hatte Cadet and documented daily life with a Roliflex camera. Images include landscapes, portraits and snapshots of everyday life including family groups, children, adults, gardening, livestock, house repair, market day, and religious ceremonies and artifacts. Collection includes negatives, contact sheets, prints, and 35mm and 2" color slides. Arranged in order by format and roll number. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Dr. David Flournoy's ledger from his work as a physician attending patients in Caroline Co., Va. Entries typically include the names of his patients (including an indication of whether they were African American) and their various charges accrued due to his treatments, visits, prescriptions, etc. Also includes 2 manuscript items: a letter and a receipt.

David Fowler was an advertising executive who served as Worldwide Creative Director for the Ogilvy & Mather agency in New York. Collection includes booklets, briefing materials, presentations, texts of speeches and other materials in printed and electronic formats that document Fowler's career in advertising, brand management and marketing. Companies represented include Ammirati & Puris, British Petroleum, Coca-Cola (Fanta), DuPont, Goldman Sachs, Motel 6, and Ogilvy & Mather. Acquired as part of the John W. David Edward Gatten is an American experimental filmmaker and moving image artist. Collection consists of one film reel: "Film for Invisible Ink case no. 323: ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" (dated 2010; 20 minutes, black-and-white, sound, 16mm). Also includes two copies of the catalog from Gatten's 2012 travelling retrospective of his career: "Ex Libris: Texts of Light," as well as an announcement for the 2012 premiere of his first digital film "The Extravagant Shadows". Collection comprises 251 black-and-white photographic prints taken by David Goldblatt during the 1960s of black and white South African miners at work, and South African Afrikaners. Resident of Richmond, Va., socialist and grassroots political activist in his early life; founder of the Southern Electoral Reform League; later sided with conservatives such as Barry Goldwater and George Wallace. The David Gordon George Papers span the years 1919 to 1976, with the bulk of the collection dated between 1935 and 1965, and are organized into the Correspondence, Personal Files, Printed Materials and Writings, Photographic Materials, and Subject Files Series. The collection consists primarily of correspondence and files related to George's involvement in a variety of political and social movements, documenting his early involvement in grassroots socialist and leftist democratic organizing and electoral reform work, decades of involvement with national and regional labor organizations, and his late-life support of anti-communist and socially conservative politics, including segregationist platforms. His complex views on the political and social status of African Americans in the South, particularly in Virginia, are documented in his writings and correspondence. Among the organizations well-represented in the collection are the Southern Electoral Reform League, the Virginia Electoral Reform League, and the United States Information Service. The papers include correspondence with a wide spectrum of national political leaders, from Socialists (Norman Thomas and Victor Berger) to Democrats (Hubert Humphrey and Estes Kefauer) to Conservatives (George Wallace), as well as staff of diverse labor organizations and a number of Virginia politicians across a broad ideological spectrum. David Long (1843-1924) served as Postmaster of the Midway (Davidson Co.), N.C. post office from 1875-1907. Collection includes correspondence; advertising mailings and fliers; personal and registered mail receipts; audit reports and other printed materials. Much of the material relates to Long's interactions with mail order companies promoting products and services including books; career and business opportunities; and patent medicines and curative programs. There are also materials relating to Democratic political activity during the 1908 election, and materials from the American Surety Company and Star Route Mail Service concerning private mail route bids and contracts. David Mamet, b. 30 Nov., 1947, Chicago; was a writer, director, producer, and actor; sometimes credited as Richard Weisz. Collection comprises the bound typescript of Mamet's 1999 play Boston Marriage, which uncharacteristically focused on female leads, and was set at the turn of the 20th century. The manuscript is 137 pages, printed on rectos only, bound in printed yellow cardstock with the Rosentone Wender Agency address in NY. Inscribed by Mamet: "To Gwen. For a loyal friend of the A.R.T. [American Repertory Theater] -- some merchandise for your loyalty. May it amuse you, provoke your ire, shim up a chair, or start a fire. Love - David Mamet." With an additional doodle (of the author wearing an A.R.T. baseball cap) and his Mamet stamp, which also appears on the front cover. The script has a print date of December 1998, more than six months before the play premiered. The inscription has a date of June 3, 1999, about two weeks before the June 16 premiere at A.R.T. David Martin Henderson graduated from Duke University in 1968. While based in Durham, North Carolina, he served as a newspaper editor and a long-time local, state-wide and national political activist. The David Martin Henderson Papers spans 1964-1989 and consists of correspondence and subject files containing letters, newspapers, clippings, pamphlets, broadsides, and internal organizational documents, all pertaining to Henderson's activities as a student radical at Duke University and a community organizer in Durham, N.C. Subjects covered by his papers include anti-war movements, Black Power, communism, G.I. rights, labor, Leninism, Marxism, women's liberation, Students for a Democratic Society and other affiliations.

Correspondence, reports, speeches, drafts of bills, notes, newsletters, printed material, clippings, and other papers, relating to Henderson's service as representative from the 3rd Congressional district of North Carolina, including material relating to his work on the Post Office, Civil Service, and Public Works committees, and to civil rights, minimum wage, federal aid to education, the Vietnam Conflict, anti-poverty programs, foreign aid, tobacco, Watergate, the energy crisis of the early 1970s, and local affairs and projects in eastern North Carolina.

David Price is a political science professor at Duke University, and Democratic congressman from North Carolina's Fourth District since 1987 (re-elected in 2006). The David Price Papers (1960-2006) document the scholarly and political career of David Eugene Price, including his days as a graduate student in the 1960s, his tenure as a political science professor and Democratic Party staff member, and, finally, his years as a Democratic congressman from North Carolina's Fourth District. Records from Price's political headquarters contain thousands of original documents, handwritten and computer-generated; printed materials such as legislative bills and campaign publicity; and a variety of audiovisual materials, including photographs, some slides, many videos, and audio recordings. The collection is especially rich for researchers interested in the American political party system, the work and life of legislators, North Carolina history and government, the North Carolina Democratic and Republican parties, the U.S. Congress, its committee structure, the Hunt Commission, and the broader legislative process. Counselor, special advisor, director of communications, and speech writer to U.S. Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton. Gergen has also worked as a journalist, serving as Editor-at-large of U.S. News and World Report and as a regular analyst on the "MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour" and the "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer." A native of Durham, N.C., Gergen graduated from Yale University and the Harvard Law School and served for three-and-a-half years in the U.S. Navy. The collection includes materials from Gergen's career in politics as well as his journalism career. Among his political materials are presidential campaign materials for the 1972, 1976, 1980, and 1984 elections; subject files; office memos; chronological files and telephone logs; daily planners; and legal and financial papers; as well as drafts and transcripts of Gergen's and other's speeches. The collection includes 86 black-and-white and color photographs, 16 audio cassettes; and 106 video cassettes. Other materials document his journalism career, including editorials, interoffice memos, and other U.S. News and World Report documents; financial and subject files relating to his work as an analyst on the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour; speeches; correspondence, chronological files, and telephone logs; and financial papers. The addition contains 445 electronic computer files; 5 color and 40 black-and-white photographs; 16 slides; and 82 video cassettes; as well as 35 audio cassettes. The audio and video cassettes include interviews with Richard Nixon and Ross Perot.

David S King was a leader of the Massachusetts unit of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) during the 1960s. He was very active in the civil rights movement, and was arrested and sent to jail during a protest in Williamston, N.C. King was a chaplain at Amherst College and later became an Associate Pastor at the First Congregational Church. In addition, he founded the Laymen's Academy Oecuminical Studies (LAOS), which encouraged people to act upon their religious faith in their everyday lives and occupations. Collection includes around 80 items, dated 1963 to 1968, that document events surrounding Rev. David S. King and his part in the civil rights movement. Items include letters to King while he was in jail and leading up to his arrest during a protest in Williamston, North Carolina in 1963. There are many letters and drawings from second and third graders at the Russell School in Pittsfield, Mass. Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) circular letters and press releases are present as well. In addition, there are numerous membership lists with contact information and clippings of articles about civil rights activities in Amherst, Mass. and Williamston, N.C. Other materials include a civil rights fact sheet, laws against housing discrimination, and a map of congressional districts in North Carolina.

Author David Tegnell (b. 1946) has conducted significant research on the family history of jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane (1926-1967). As a part of this research, Tegnell has interviewed over fifteen relatives and associates of Coltrane; two of whom - Betty and Tim Jackson - are represented in the collection.

David W. Dole is a genealogist and former broadcasting and advertising executive (Leo Burnett agency). The Industry Standard Commercial Identification (ISCI) system is a coding system used by television stations and advertisers to identify and track television commericials. The ISCI code consists of and 8-character identifier, four letters (identifying the advertiser) and four numbers (identifying the specific commercial), in the format ABCD1234. Each version of every commercial receives a unique identifier. David Dole is also the author (in the 1990s) of the Publishers Genealogical Coding Service (PGCS), used by librarians and genealogists to codify bibliographic information for obituaries. The David W. Dole ISCI Records span the years between 1969 and 2004 and document the creation and management of the Industry Standard Commercial Indentification (ISCI) system. The collection consists of press releases, correspondence, pamphlets, clippings, articles, published registers, and technical documents that pertain to the proposal, design and implementation of the ISCI system. Materials pertain to the involvement of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA), including the purchase of the ISCI system from Dole by the AAAA/ANA in the 1990s, and the replacement of ISCI with a new system, Ad-Id.

Collection consists of 8mm and 16mm films, videocassettes, compact discs, and audiocassettes, deriving from artist David X. Young's work in New York City, Cape Cod, and Haiti. His New York work includes films of W. Eugene Smith working in his loft studio in 1971, as well as experimental films dating from the 1950s to the 1980s. Homemade audiocassette mix tapes document Young's interest in jazz as well as his piano playing. Videocassettes consist of reference copies of several films and television programs on W. Eugene Smith. This collection is part of the Archive of Documentary Arts. Original recordings are closed to research access pending reformatting.

The Davis family, originally of Hampton, Virginia, is a prominent African-American family whose members include authors, journalists, photographers, filmmakers, composers, and educators who have made significant contributions to American history and culture. The collection includes photograph albums, loose photographs, and writings documenting the history of the African American Davis family in Hampton, Virginia from the 1930s to the 1950s as well as family members at later points; it also includes materials related to family history and genealogy that span the period from 1876 to the 1920s. Family members featured within the collection include William Roscoe Davis, Andrew Davis, Arthur P. Davis, Sr., Georgia Campbell Neal, Willie Louise Barbour Davis, Collis H. Davis, Sr., Georgia Louise Davis, Jennie Crosby Davis, Collis H. Davis, Jr., Thulani Davis, Anthony Davis, and Charles Sumner Stone, Jr. (Chuck). Dawn Langley Simmons (1937-2000), was a British author. She started her career editing newspaper society columns and went on to become a prolific biographer and the author of Man Into Women: A Transsexual Autobiography (1971). The Dawn Langley Simmons Papers span the years 1848-2001, with the bulk of the papers being dated between 1969 and 2001. The collection houses extensive files of correspondence dating from the 1950s to 2000, with topics ranging from Simmons' formative years in Great Britain, her relationship with her mother, Marjorie Hall Copper, literary circles in Great Britain, later personal events such as her wedding, and Simmons' development as a writer. Significant correspondents or individuals mentioned in letters include Margaret Rutherford, Isabel Whitney, Vita Sackville-West, Sir Harold Nicolson, Nigel Nicolson, Robert Holmes, and Edwin Peacock. The collection also includes writings by Simmons in the form of typescripts and diaries; printed material and clippings, including articles and reviews by and about Simmons; legal and financial papers; an extensive collection of scrapbooks; photographs; audiovisual materials; and other material relating to Simmons' personal life and career as a writer.

Collection consists primarily of personal and business correspondence (bulk 1870s-1910s) and speeches of John Henry Dawson, his family and friends in and around Lenoir County, North Carolina. Also included are wills of John Dawson, Sr. (1830s-1840s) outlining the disposition of his property including several slaves and a plantation along the Neuse River.

Daylight is a nonprofit organization dedicated to publishing art and photography books. It was founded by Michael Itkoff and Taj Forer in 2004. This collection includes materials, largely page proofs and galleys, from the publication of several Daylight books. There is also assorted loose materials promoting and publicizing Daylight's publications.

Day Otis Kellogg, was a professor of literature at the University of Kansas and editor of the American edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Collection comprises letters written to and by D. O. Kellogg, dated 1841-1899 and undated. Topics generally involve Encyclopaedia Britannica articles, including editorial corrections and the selection of authors. In addition, there are two circulars concerning Kellogg family genealogy. There are 13 letters from F. M. Bird regarding his contributions to encyclopedia articles and his career in higher education, as well as 4 letters from David P. Todd, director of the Amherst College Observatory, regarding his encyclopedia article on American telescopes. Includes 2 letters by Kellogg, one remitting money in support of a religious candidate, and the other on how to tabulate data on cities.

The Dayton Company, founded in 1902 in Minneapolis, Minn., was the predecessor firm to the Target Corporation, one of the largest retail chains in the United States. The Dayton Company Advertising Scrapbooks collection spans the years 1904 through 1968 and consist of 509 bound scrapbooks of newspaper advertisements, fliers and circulars for the Dayton department store chain in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. and Rochester, N.Y., as well for several of Dayton's competitors, affiliates and subsidiary department and discount stores, including B. Dalton Bookseller, the J.B. Hudson and L.S. Donaldson stores.

Dean Wright played football for the Duke University Blue Devils from 1958 to 1961. During this time, the Duke football team earned two consecutive ACC Championships (1960 and 1961) and won the Cotton Bowl (1961). Dean Wright received many honors as an outstanding player, including the Team MVP Award and invitations to play in the honorary North-South Game (1961) and in the All-America Game (1962). The Dean S. Wright Collection consists of clippings, correspondence, awards, memorabilia, photographs, game programs, and a textbook, which document Dean Wright's student life and football career, Head Football Coach Bill Murray, and the Duke University football team from 1958 to 1962. The Duke University Debate Team was formed around 1897 at Trinity College (now Duke University). The Debate Team records include a constitution, minutes, correspondence, season summaries, debate topic announcements, debate match announcements, fliers, member lists, petition to join Tau Kappa Alpha (now Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha), a research paper, certificates, photographs, memorabilia, newsletters, clippings, and scrapbooks. Major subjects include Trinity College history, Duke University students, political activity, student groups, debate, opinions about the Cold War, freedom of speech, the Speech Association of American (now the Speech Communication Association), the 1954-1955 Debate Team conflict, and Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha. Debbie Swanner is a radical feminist activist based in the Durham area and was a founding member of the Radical Feminist Organizing Committee (RFOC). The collection primarily documents Swanner's work with Brooke L. Williams and the Radical Feminist Organizing Committee (RFOC) in the 1980s and early 1990s. Collection contains organizational materials, RFOC publications, and correspondence between Swanner and other feminist activists. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Collection contains 28 color prints from Debi Cornwall's project "Gitmo at Home, Gitmo at Play/Beyond Gitmo." The project pairs images from two series. The first, "Gitmo at Home, Gitmo at Play" was made during three visits to the base in 2014-2015. The series "Beyond Gitmo" consists of environmental portraits of 10 men once held at Gitmo who have since been cleared of charges and freed.

Journalist and photographer. The Deena Stryker photographs collection contains photographs, negatives, and contact sheets generated by the journalist then known as Deena Boyer during two trips to Cuba between July 1963 and July 1964, as well as exhibit prints produced in 2010. During her second trip to the island, Stryker interviewed and photographed Fidel and Raúl Castro as well as other major figures in the Cuban Revolution such as Che Guevara and Vilma Espín. Topics and photographic subjects include key members of the revolutionary government at work and relaxing; and life in Havana and in rural Cuba, focusing on shops, street scenes, rallies, farms, development projects, and schools. There is a draft of the book prepared for publication in Italian by Stryker about her Cuba trips. Stryker's original negatives were processed in Cuba by Alberto Korda, Fidel Castro's personal photographer. All of Stryker's negatives have been digitized and are available online. "Degeto Weltspiegel 22. Entscheidung auf dem Balkan III. Sprung nach Kreta" is a 16mm, black-and-white, silent film documenting the German airborne invasion of Crete in May 1941.

DeLossie Tuttle was an undergraduate at the Woman's College at Duke University from 1948-1952. The collection includes grade reports, college papers, Duke calendars and schedule books, entertainment programs, Duke songbooks and handbook, photographs, a scrapbook, and artifacts such as a Duke pillow and wooden Duke Blue Devil statue. The collection ranges in date from circa 1948-1952.

Delouis Wilson is an African American artist, and jewelry designer, and art collector, based in Durham, North Carolina. The papers comprise her journals (1977-2008); calendars; sketchbooks, art school notebooks, and loose pieces of mixed media artwork. The journals, currently closed to use, document in detail her personal life, travels in the U.S. and abroad, including time spent in Tunisia in the Peace Corps, life in Durham, N.C., and employment as a jewelry designer. The collection also includes 30 large photographic studio portraits of African Americans, almost all hand-tinted crayon enlargements, dating from about 1890 to 1945 and collected by Wilson chiefly in the Southern U.S. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts, the Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture, and the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

The Alpha Epsilon chapter of Delta Sigma Phi was established at Duke University in 1920. Contains the records of the Alpha Epsilon chapter of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, a social fraternity for men at Duke University. Types of materials include correspondence, financial summaries, amendments to bylaws, meeting notes, minutes, and printed material. Major subjects include student life at Duke University, hazing, rush, chapter establishment, and governance. Materials range in date from 1920 to 1972.

Official magazine of the Democratic National Committee, published monthly in Washington D.C. Its editors were Clayton Fritchey, Sam Brightman, and Philip M. Stern, with political cover art by Leo Hershfield. Collection contains editorial files of the Democratic Digest, dating from 1953-1961, with the contents of the files falling into three large categories: correspondence, editorial, and art files. The correspondence includes many letters from readers, critics, and Democratic Senators and Governors, chiefly in response to political issues of the day such as McCarthyism, corruption, civil rights, economics, labor, nuclear weapons, farm subsidies, party politics, and elections. Editorial files contain edited copy for articles and columns; TV and radio scripts, including speeches by Democratic candidates; and many clippings reprinted in the Digest. About a third of the collection consists of hundreds of pieces of original layout art, including political cartoons by Leo Hershfield and others, and a few photographs of political leaders such as Truman, Stevenson, and Johnson. Finally, a smaller group of printed materials published for the Democratic 1960 national campaign includes political leaflets, pamphlets, party platforms and position papers, a newsprint publication examining of the records of Nixon and Kennedy, and a few other items.

The Dept. of African and African American Studies collection contains the office files of department directors Walter Burford and William Turner. Materials and topics in the collection include course materials for courses taught under the aegis of Black Studies' instructors; the large efforts channeled into recruitment of full-time faculty for the program; committee work related to Black Studies proposals and to the program's departmental status; budgets; and printed matter relating to similar programs and problems at other schools. The materials date from 1966-1981.

The Department of Botany existed at Duke from 1935 until 2000, when it joined with the Department of Zoology to re-form the Department of Biology. Collection contains assorted records from the Department of Botany, spanning from 1932 to 1978. Included are ledgers of financial records from the late 1930s, newspaper clippings from throughout the department's history, promotional materials, and committee reports from the mid 1960s.

The records of the Duke University Department of Chemistry comprise large file groups of correspondence, students records, personnel policies, meeting minutes and memoranda, student research lab notebooks, and other items that relate to the history of this department, among the oldest in the University. Records include items relating to faculty members and department chairs.

Originally the classical studies curriculum was spread over two separate departments which were Latin and Roman studies, and Greek studies. In 1962, these disciplines combined to become Classical Studies. This collection contains materials related to the Department of Classical Studies including minutes, materials created by students in classical studies classes, correspondence, financial records, a course paper, flyers, and other materials.

The Department of Computer Science originally formed as the Computer Science Program in 1971. It became a department in 1973. The files in this collection concern the origin and formation of the Department and include much information about the Duke University Computation Center (DUCC) and the Triangle Universities Computation Center (TUCC). Materials range in date from 1961-1978.

The Department of Education, formed in 1907, prepared both undergraduate and graduate students for careers in education. The Department dissolved at the end of 1981. The Department of Education Records include correspondence, minutes, memoranda, reports, proposals, exams, student and faculty information, and other materials. Subjects include the training of teachers in North Carolina, the process of accreditation, teaching in elementary and secondary schools, and departmental administration. Major programs and organizations include the Master of Arts in Teaching Program, the Cooperative Program in Teacher Education, the N.C. Advancement School, the Triple T Task Force Team, the Emotionally Disturbed Children Program, the Regional Education Laboratory, the Learning Institute of North Carolina (LINC), the Durham Education Improvement Program (EIP), the Summer Demonstration School, the Summer Enrichment Program, and Project ABC. The Dept. of Germanic Languages and Literature was created to offer students the opportunity to study the German language and the literature of Germany at Duke University. Most of the collection ranges in date from 1960-1985. A majority of the material was accumulated and created by Herman Salinger (Department chair, 1955-1970 and faculty member, 1955-1975); and Leland Phelps (faculty member, 1961-1985 and department chair, 1970-1983). Material includes various correspondence concerning academic appointments, administrative matters, and curriculum. Major subjects include graduate students and graduate study, various committees, study abroad programs, and publications. Files pertaining to the Harold Jantz Collection are also present.

Collection contains records pertaining to the operation and activities of the Department of History and its faculty at Duke University, 1932-[ongoing]. Materials present include administrative files from the Office of the Chair, Director of Graduate Studies, and Director of Undergraduate Studies: correspondence, memoranda, departmental meeting minutes, budget and course material, committee files, and various subject files. The records also include course papers, inactive faculty files, Nixon Library material, and external review files. University Archives staff must be consulted in order to determine the extent of access restrictions.

In 1942, Duke University created the Department of Aesthetics, Art and Music. In 1960, the Department of Music formed as a separate department. Allan H. Bone, Duke professor from 1940 to 1983 and conductor of the Duke Symphony, was instrumental in the formation of the department. British composer Iain Hamilton was a faculty member for seventeen years. The Dept. of Music audiovisual materials collection contains audio and video resources made between 1951 and 1996, primarily on open reel audio and video tape, of the Duke Symphony Orchestra, the Duke Wind Symphony, the Duke Glee Club, the Ciompi Quartet, and the Duke Collegium Musicum, as well as other recordings related to the faculty and students of the Duke University Department of Music. There are also audiocassettes and a few videotapes. Faculty members represented include Jane Hawkins, Penelope Jensen, Randall Love, Robert Parkins, Fred Raimi, Claudia Warburg, Mary Lou Williams, and Ruth Friedburg. Other featured musicians are Milton Babbitt, Barbara Lister-Sink, Claudia Bloom, Boaz Sharon, and Bruce Berg. English.

The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke features scholarship and teaching in several subdisciplines of psychology and is the primary home for the study of the neuroscience of behavior in the College of Arts & Sciences. This collection contains minutes from various subgroups within the Psychology Department, staff meetings, clinical psychology staff meetings, senior staff committee meetings, and graduate staff meetings, as well as, departmental correspondence, applications for research grants, class census records, reports to the administration and the Board of Trustees, videotapes, 16mm film, and publications of the Psychology Department faculty.

In 1960, the existing graduate and undergraduate programs in religious studies at Duke University were consolidated into the Department of Religion under the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Department of Religion offers undergraduate and graduate level courses surrounding numerous aspects of religious study. The collection includes information relating to the management of both academic and administrative affairs and includes correspondence, committee meeting minutes, event planning materials, budgetary information, course materials, and other documents that illustrate the development of the Religious Studies program.

The Department of Romance Studies offers a variety of comprehensive undergraduate programs and Ph.D. programs in French and Francophone Studies, Italian Studies, Portuguese, Spanish and Latin American Studies. Collection contains materials pertaining to the Romance Languages Department including programs, departmental newsletters, examinations, and other printed materials. Languages present include English, French, and Spanish. The materials in the collection range in date from 1903-1967, but the bulk of the material dates from 1923-1967.

The Department of Theater Studies at Duke University offers courses on the critical evaluation, writing and performance of dramatic works. The department seeks to promote an artistic culture at Duke by bringing professional theatrical performances to campus. The Department of Theater Studies records is composed of administrative materials and records related to both departmental and professional performances staged at Duke.

The Departments and Academic Divisions Reference Collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research. This collection includes materials about departments, centers, programs, sections, institutes, cooperative programs (mostly Duke-UNC), and other units.

The formal study of art at Duke began with the establishment of the Dept. of Aesthetics, Art, and Music in 1942. The department was renamed the Dept. of Art in the 1959/1960 academic year, and later renamed the Dept. of Art and Art History in 1985/1986. The Department has two distinct units, one primarily devoted to the making of works of art, the other primarily devoted to the historical understanding and current interpretation of visual images and constructed space. Records include clippings, exhibit catalogs, reports, memoranda, and other records. Subjects include the B. N. Duke lectures, the James A. Thomas Memorial Room, and exhibits. Materials range in date from circa 1942 to 1985. English.

The Duke University Dept. of Anthropology was formed in the 1972/1973 academic year, after the joint Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology, which had existed from 1941 to 1972, split into two separate departments. In July 1988, the disciplines in the Dept. of Anthropology divided into the Dept. of Cultural Anthropology and the Dept. of Biological Anthropology and Anatomy. The Dept. of Cultural Anthropology focuses on the study of cultures around the world. Records include two brief subject files including clippings and a newsletter, as well as a few documents relating to the Anthropology Majors Union, from the 1970s. In addition, the records include a syllabus and selected course papers from Cultural Anthropology 105.S01: Campus Politics, taught by Orin Starn in 1992.

The study of economics has a long history at Duke University. Economics classes were taught at Trinity College, the forerunner of Duke University, as early as the 1899-1900 academic year. Several individuals particularly important to the Department's development and programming: include Calvin Bryce Hoover; Joseph J. Spengler; H. Gregg Lewis; and Martin Bronfenbrenner. The collection contains miscellaneous office files associated with the daily operations of the Department of Economics including: correspondence, memoranda, class schedules, faculty rosters and files, reports, and undergraduate honors theses. Also present are the Working Papers in Economics produced by the Department of Economics, Duke University dating 1981-1990, 1992.

The Dept. of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) was created in 1975 by the merger of the Men's and Women's Physical Education Departments. However, formal physical education at Duke University dates to 1902 when President Kilgo invited Wilbur "Cap" Card to return to Trinity College as Director of a new program in physical education. The collection contains printed material on intramural athletics, personal recreational programs, physical education, and materials related to Duke sports clubs. The John Friedrich papers series consists of administrative records pertaining to his chairmanship of HPER from 1963-1986.

The Department of Aesthetics, Art & Music was established at Duke University in 1942. In 1960, the Department of Music was recognized as an independent department and Dr. Allen H. Bone was appointed the first Chair. The department moved into the Mary Duke Biddle Music Building when it was completed in the 1970's. The bulk of the Dept. of Music records consist of publicity documents including programs, press releases, and calendars, for various Dept. of Music events. There are also documents regarding the renovation of the facilities, clippings, posters and general records for the department.

The Department of Political Science was established in 1934 and continues today with both undergraduate and graduate programs. The collection contains correspondence, clippings, course materials, applications, honors theses, and departmental papers.

Courses in Russian language and literature were offered at Duke University in the early 1950s. The Russian Department was formed in 1958, renamed Slavic Languages and Literatures in 1967, and renamed again in the 2006-2007 academic year to Slavic and Eurasian Studies. Collection contains largely the files of Magnus Jan Krynski, chairman of the department from ca. 1966-1988, along with the records of other faculty members. The material dates from 1956-1983.

The Dept. of Sociology at Duke was established in 1930 by Charles Abram Ellwood (1873-1946) and remains an active department to this day offering degrees to both undergraduates and graduate students. This collection contains student research papers, course syllabi, memoranda, newspaper clippings, documentation from the Sociology Majors Union, as well as other various departmental documents.

Durham-based photographer specializing in editorial and documentary photography. Collection contains 16 11x14 color digital photographs produced by Derek Anderson for his project "When the Dust Settles: A photographic survey of the former Liggett & Myers tobacco factory in Durham, NC." Photographs include captions and range in date from 2006 to 2008.

Desarrolla is a student organization whose goal is to promote Latin America by encouraging partnerships between members of the Duke community and communities within Latin America. The Desarrolla Records span 2014-2016 and include founding documents, organization information, records of the marketing and networking teams, and brand image materials.

Collection comprises 43 3.5 x 2.5 black-and-white photographs of Dese, Ethiopia, primarily featuring groups of people and local infrastructure. The photographer is unknown. Images include native tribunals and prisoners, the nobility, Coptic priests, water bearers, processions, a local calvary unit, a slave, roads, houses, fountains, wells, a Coptic school, and the local market, among others. There are handwritten captions and dates (including Roman numerals for the Fascist year) in Italian on the backs of the majority of the photographs; a one-page English translation for the captions is provided.

Desmond Frances Anderson was Lt. Col. of the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment in 1927, serving in China and India until 1930. The Desmond F. Anderson diaries comprise 4 volumes (approximately 650 pages) of corrected typescript, accompanied by maps, sketches, postcards, photo postcards, and a few printed items tipped in, all detailing Anderson's service in China and India between 1927 and 1930.

Collection of programs of music, songs and speeches as well as the text of speeches, recitations, poetry and quotations from books apparently prepared for the Albert Forster School in Berlin during the Nazi period. Topics include soldiers, workers and peasants, Adolf Hitler, World War I, and the struggle for victory.

The Devereux family lived in Raleigh, N.C. They were a prominent and wealthy family before the Civil War. This collection is largely concerned with personal and family affairs; the chief correspondents in the collection are Thomas Pollock Devereux (1793-1869), his sister-in-law Sarah Elizabeth Devereux, his son John Devereux (1819-1893), daughter-in-law Margaret (Mordecai) Devereux (1824-1910), and Robert L. Maitland of New York, a business associate. Subjects covered by the letters include camp life in the Civil War, plantations, slaves and real estate.

Diane Weddington worked as a journalist and religion editor at the Contra Costa Times in the 1980s-1990s. She has also taught courses in journalism, public policy, new media, and ethics. Collection includes Weddington's published articles, research clippings, reporter notes, and other publications and materials from her journalism career, divinity school studies, background material for arts journalism, and materials documenting Weddington's educational and teaching careers. Topics represented include the gay and lesbian community in San Francisco, the ordination of women and gay clergy, the women's rights movement, domestic violence and child abuse, Alzheimer's Disease, and other miscellaneous subjects.

Chiefly nineteenth-century slave records for Alabama, many for Wilcox County, and to a lesser extent for North Carolina and Virginia. Included are legal documents and other items, such as bills, receipts, wills, bonds, guardianship papers, appraisals of estates, and documents relating to the settlement of estates and to court cases. These documents contain lists of property and slaves, often with prices attached. Names and ages are usually included. Some of the receipts record items purchased for slaves and payments made for them. A group of 24 individual inventories of land and slaves in 1815 is from Virginia, and lists gender, status (e.g. child or adult), and price, but no names. Items are arranged in rough chronological order. Collected by Dick Brown.

Dick Groat (Class of '52) received numerous accolades for his performances in baseball and basketball while at Duke. Groat then served two years in the United States Army. He went on to play 14 seasons in Major League Baseball, winning World Series Championships with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960 and St. Louis Cardinals in 1964. He was also named the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1960. The collection includes a scrapbook containing clippings that document Groat's athletic career at Duke and several issues of the Belvoir Castle that contain articles documenting his baseball and basketball career while playing in various armed services leagues with inclusive dates 1948-1955.

Correspondents whose names appear most often are Pettit and Leake, a legal firm of Goochland Court House, Va., Altantic and Virginia Fertilizing Co. of Richmond, Va., and Appleberry's nephew, Thomas A. Collection contains records relating to the operations and activities of the Duke University Athletic Director, 1939-2007, bulk 1968-2007. A majority of the material was accumulated during Tom Butters' tenure as Athletic Director. Materials present include general correspondence, seven subject files arranged by accession, and contracts and schedules. Major subjects include National Collegiate Athletic Association, Atlantic Coast Conference, Duke University team sports, scholarships, fundraising, Iron Dukes, Athletic Council, and facilities and grounds.

Diskin Clay was on the Classics faculty at Duke University from 1990 to 2008. This collection of his professional papers includes correspondence, writings, teaching files, and research materials. Topics include Greek literature, especially poetry; Greek philosophy; and archaeology in Greece; specific topics relate to Oenanda, an ancient Greek city in Turkey, to the writings of Xenophon, Diogenes, and the poetry of Archilocus. There are also many slides of Greece, as well as from Italy and Paris, France, taken during research and archaeology trips.

Collection comprised of 9 boxes of company records and 5 ledgers of organizational material of the Dismal Swamp Land Company, a shingle production company in existence between 1763-1879. Letter books, receipts spanning the entirety of the company's existence, and legal documents make up the bulk of the collection.

The Diversity Working Group (DWG) was formed in 1999 with a charge to plan, facilitate, and conduct programs related to diversity within the Duke University Libraries (DUL). This collection contains materials related to the work of the DWG, including correspondence, memos, and other materials related to workshops, surveys, and other projects conducted.

Established in 1926, the Divinity School is one of 13 seminaries founded and supported by the United Methodist Church, and attracts students from around the nation and several different countries. The Divinity School has from its beginnings been ecumenical in aspiration, teaching, and practice. This collection contains information and materials documenting the operations of the Divinity School, including the activities of its deans, faculty, students, as well as various councils, committees and organizations within and associated with the school.

Founded in 1926 as the first of the university's graduate professional schools, the Divinity School attracts students from around the nation and several different countries. One of 13 seminaries founded and supported by the United Methodist Church, the school has from its beginnings been ecumenical in aspiration, teaching, and practice. With many diverse theological perspectives, students find common ground through immersion in Scripture and the church's tradition for addressing the challenges of faith in today's world. Collection contains subject files relating to the Divinity School at Duke University. Some major topics include admissions, sermons, symposiums, continuing education, field education, student groups, and other topics. Video cassettes and audio cassettes are also present in the collection.

The Divinity Student Council (DSC) is a student organization within the Divinity School that coordinates and assists students and other student organizations within the school by approving the creation or affiliation of groups as official DSC student gourps, assisting in the planning and communication of events and activities, representing the needs and concerns of the student body to the administration of the Divinity School, discovering and responding to the needs of the student body, and collecting dues and other monies for these purposes. The Divinity Student Council Records consist of materials related to the functions of the Divinity School Council, especially in the planning of events and activities, the election of representatives, and its work with affiliated groups.
