Lynnsy Logue is a sculptor and founder of the Wonderful Women organization. She worked with Rachel Watkins to create The Homecoming Queens project in the mid-1990s. The collection includes a scrapbook and a videotape from The Homecoming Queens public arts project, as well as some research materials about women around the world and some materials on a vigil for the Montreal 14 held in Charlotte in 1989. The Homecoming Queens was a traveling exhibit of life-size mannequins and papier-mache dolls that represented women suffering from various social and political issues around the world, including female genital mutilation, rape, abuse, war, aging, and sexism. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Mab Segrest papers, 1889-2019 71 Linear Feet

Dr. Mab Segrest is a feminist writer, scholar, and activist who received her PhD from Duke University in 1979. She was born in 1949 in Tuskegee, Alabama and attended Huntingdon College from 1967 to 1971. Segrest is recognized for speaking and writing about sexism, racism, homophobia, classism, and other forms of oppression. Collection contains correspondence, activism, teaching, and writing files, as well as photographic and audiovisual materials that document Segrest's personal life, education, and professional life. There are significant materials relating to Segrest's work with the following organizations: The NC Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality, North Carolinians Against Racist and Religious Violence (NCARRV), The Center for Democratic Renewal (CDR), The North Carolina Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality (NCCGLE), National Women's Studies Association (NWSA), The World Council of Churches/Urban Rural Mission (WCC/URM), and The National Women's Studies Association/Southern Women's Studies Association (NWSA/SWSA). Macedonia Cooperative Community flyers for toy wooden blocks, 1950 and undated 0.6 Linear Feet

Founded in 1937 in Clarkesville (Habersham Co.), Ga. by Morris Randolph Mitchell; took name from nearby Baptist Church; comprised of families and individuals who worked collectively on the dairy, agricultural, forestry, and woodworking projects which provided the economic underpinnings of the community; originally an economic cooperative, Macedonia later passed through two distinct phases before its demise in 1958; at end of WWII an infusion of former civilian public service men, including conscientious objectors who had served prison sentences, joined the cooperative bringing an emphasis on pacifism; last stages of cooperative lasted from 1953-1957 when members of group explored the possibility of merging with the religious community known as the Society of Brothers (Bruderhof); in 1958 Macedonia ceased to be a separate community and property was sold at public auction on June 27, 1958. Collection comprises 4 flyers regarding the various wooden block sets made by the community for children.

MacRae family papers, 1817-1943 10 Linear Feet (4270 items)

Correspondence, diary, account books, ledgers, bills, receipts, business records, legal papers, and other material of the MacRae family of North Carolina and Florida. Alexander MacRae's papers concern Florida plantations and their management, the Seminole Indian War (1842), and settlements in southern Florida. Papers of his son, Archibald MacRae, deal with his life aboard ship as a U.S. naval officer, and with his trips to the Azores, Italy, Sicily, Hawaii, South America, and California during the Mexican War. Other papers pertain to railroad construction and management, North Carolina militia (1832, 1839), a general commission business, life in the Confederacy and Confederate Army during the Civil War, postwar business and industrial development in the Wilmington, N.C., area, and a variety of business enterprises with which the MacRae family was connected. Includes writings and papers of Hugh MacRae.

Madame de Staël letter to LeRoy, Bayard & McEvers, 1814 October 12 0.1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Madame de Staël (1766-1817) was a French literary figure whose writings were highly influential in late 18th and early 19th century Europe. She was a political polemicist whose famous confrontation with Napoléon Bonaparte led to her exile from Paris until the Bourbon Restoration. This letter was written in 1814 towards the end of her life. She writes from Paris to the prominent New York mercantile firm LeRoy, Bayard & McEvers concerning a financial transaction in the amount of $20,000. She states that she has transferred the sum to McEvers in London, and wishes to confirm that they will, in turn, transfer it to her account with another firm. At the time she wrote this letter, Madame de Staël owned a large tract of land in upstate New York. Her father originally purchased the land in the event that the family wanted to escape France's instability and settle in America. Although she and her children never moved to the United States, de Staël both increased her land holdings and invested in developing her property. LeRoy, Bayard & McEvers represented Europeans purchasing property in New York State, so it's highly likely that the $20,000 was used to either increase or develop Madame de Staël's American land holdings. This letter is evidence of a degree of financial and business independence that was highly unusual for a woman at the time.

Collection comprises a four-page letter Van Cott wrote (19 May 1884) to an unidentified close friend regarding her preaching in Dover, Maine, and its impact. She confesses "...I find the people spiritually dead" and tells the story of a father who dragged his son away from her and the altar. The letter is signed, "Peggie." She inserted into the letter a newspaper clipping reporting the revival she led in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mahala Ashley Dickerson papers, 1958-2007 and undated 1.2 Linear Feet Approximately 900 Items

African-American lawyer and businesswoman in the states of Alaska, Indiana, and Alabama. The personal and business papers of African American lawyer and businesswoman Mahala Ashley Dickerson span the years 1958 to 2007, the year of Dickerson's death, and chiefly consist of correspondence; newspaper clippings; real estate records; programs, letters, and additional items documenting honors, awards, and public appearances; papers concerning her homestead plot in Alaska and other personal and business concerns; photographs and videocassettes; and directories, journal publications, and pamphlets and correspondence concerning the American Bar Foundation and the Alabama State Bar Association. Business records chiefly are related to Dickerson's law firm of Dickerson & Gibbons, and the charitable organization Al-Acres, which she founded in memory of her son, Alfred, who drowned in 1960. There is some correspondence in the collection related to her memoir, Delayed Justice for Sale, which she published in 1998.

Major General Lloyd Brinkley Ramsey photograph albums of service in South Korea, 1959 July-1960 May 1.5 Linear Feet (3 boxes)

Lloyd Brinkley Ramsey was a U.S. Army three-star general who served in South Korea from 1959-1960 as Senior Military Advisor to the Korean National War College in Seoul, South Korea. The three spiral-bound albums house over 300 black-and-white mounted photographs, chiefly in 4x5 and 8x10 sizes, all with typed captions and commentary. The images document the War College campus, Ramsey's quarters, South Korean and American officers in group portraits and in military meetings, dinners, and parties, as well as official tours and visits, including to the DMZ and a U.S. guided missile base; and visits to Seoul streets and tourist sites, rice fields and markets, and to Tokyo, Japan. Ramsey often appears in event photographs. There are a few snapshots of Ramsey's family. Also includes about 20 close-range photographs documenting the violence and bloodshed at student and civilian street protests in Seoul against President Syngman Rhee, known as the April Revolution of 1960.

Malcolm Bell (1931- ) is an author, lawyer, and whistle blower; he was formerly a prosecuting attorney for the State of New York's Department of Law task force investigating the September 1971 Attica Prison Uprising. Collection comprises Bell's extensive investigative notes, witness statements, legal memoranda, trial records, correspondence, writings, clippings, subject files, and audio recordings related to the Attica Uprising. Also included are drafts for Bell's book, both written and electronic, The Turkey Shoot: Tracking the Attica Cover-Up, a documentary video, Ghosts of Attica, and ephemera such as programs and fliers. Subjects include events during the uprising, the subsequent cover-up, investigative efforts, and legal cases; Attica anniversary events; activism on behalf of Attica Uprising victims; and related topics such as police violence, political corruption in New York State, African Americans in the prison system, the U.S. legal system in general, and the effects of systemic racism in the U.S. Correspondents include Tom Wicker, Donald Jelinek, and Heather Ann Thompson, as well as N.Y. State officials. Includes a group of 18 audio recordings from November 1975 of Malcolm Bell and Donald Jelinek in conversation one-on-one about the Attica uprising and their involvement at the time. In addition, Bell's papers document his interest in what he saw as related social issues such as corporate corruption and immigrant rights. The papers of the Malet family span the dates 1808-1937, with most of the papers being dated between 1824 and 1908. The papers consist chiefly of correspondence among members of the Malet family, particularly Sir Charles Warre Malet, Sir Alexander Malet and his wife Lady Marian Dora Malet, Sir Henry Charles Eden Malet, and Sir Edward Baldwin Malet, and their friends and diplomatic associates. Notable correspondents include Queen Sophia of the Netherlands, Sidney Herbert, Lord Clarendon, Lord Napier, Lord Stuart de Rochesay, Lord Brougham, Sir Rennell Rodd, Lord Lyons, Lord Granville and Lord Dufferin. The papers also include printed material, writings, financial papers, clippings, photographs, Lady Marian Dora Malet's diary (1831-1833), Sir Henry Charles Eden Malet's album of illustrations of his service in the Crimean War, and miscellaneous papers. The collection is particularly rich in material concerning 19th-century British diplomacy. The letters of Sir Alexander and Sir Edward Malet thoroughly document British relations with Russia, Portugal, Holland, Austria, Germany, the United States, France, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Belgium, China, and Egypt. The letters and album of Sir Henry Charles Eden Malet in the Malet Family Correspondence Series provide detailed information about the Crimean War, particularly the siege of Sevastopol.

M. A. M. Smith was the wife of a Civil War soldier who resided in Mazeppa, Minnesota. Collection comprises a letter (1863 June 5) M. A. M. Smith wrote to a friend, discussing the conduct of the war ("What is to become of the country. How long shall or must we wait for the right man in the right place to do the wash."), politics, her psychological state, the state of her farm, and the safety of her husband. She notes, "Cares, work, weariness, the blues, dumps, without the ling, are doing their legitamate [sic] business in bringing gray hairs & wrinkles. Will be a regular "roan," ha. ha."

Man Bites Dog Films is the creator of the podcast Leonard: Political Prisoner, which received the Rubenstein Library's first Human Rights Audio Documentary Award in 2021. The podcast details the case of Leonard Peltier, an Indigenous activist and artist who is serving a life sentence in prison for allegedly killing two FBI agents in 1975. Collection includes episodes and transcripts from season one of the podcast, as well as bonus interviews and transcripts, photographs, art, and supporting documents. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive and Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Manbites Dog Theater records, 1987-2018 and undated 38 Linear Feet

Manbites Dog Theater was a professional non-profit theater company founded in Durham in October 1987. Manbites Dog staged a variety of theatrical productions, with a focus on premieres of new works by working closely with playwrights, directors, actors, and artists. The theater mounted over 130 productions, many of them regional or state premieres. The theater closed in 2018. Collection includes a variety of administrative documents from these productions, including marketing materials, reviews, contracts, and box-office records. Also includes administrative documents from more general theater operations.

Manufacturer sales contest photograph albums, 1922-1925 0.2 Linear Feet

Collection comprises two photograph albums documenting manufacturer's sales promotion contests administered by various newspapers in the U.S. northeast, primarily in Pennsylvania. The contests required participants to amass "votes" by collecting labels or wrappers from designated products to be turned in to the newspaper offices. Photographs depict newspaper advertisements announcing the contests, collections of wrapper submissions, correspondence relating to the contest and other activities. Newspapers documented include the Advocate, Cleveland News, Philadelphia Record, Pittsburgh Post-Sun, and Sunday News Leader. D.J. Wattis, at one time of the Pittsburgh Post-Sun Advertising Department is featured several times in conjunction with the contests. Designated consumer products represent regional and national brands and include Barbasol, Foulds, Keebler, Lautz Brothers (Snow Boy), Post and Postum cereals, Salada Tea and Woolson Spice Company (Golden Sun Coffee). Mao era photographs of Chinese women, 1973-1975 and undated 0.2 Linear Feet

Collection comprises 36 black-and-white photographs, varying in size from about 4x6 to 9.5x11, some with card-stock backing. The images mainly portray women at work, as textile and other industry workers; as scientists, medical professionals, and academics; and as participants in Communist Party education. There are also images that pertain to improvements in women's status, whether for minorities or workers in general. The majority of the photographs bear captions in both Chinese and English. Several have Hsinhua News Agency markings; beyond such markings, the photographer is unidentified. A few have sizing information for reproduction, and many were likely used in an exhibition on the status of women in modern China. Loosely organized according to amount within the following topics, based on the caption provided for the photograph: factory workers, professional women, Communist Party workers, commune and other workers, and minorities.

Marcel Montassut papers, 1914-1975 2 Linear Feet

Pyschiatrist of Villejuif and Moiselles, France. The collection (300 items; dated 1914-1975) contains the papers of Marcel Montassut, a noted French psychiatrist who worked in the Hôpital Psychiatrique de Villejuif as Médecin-Chef from 1942 to 1960. Montassut's papers are primarily research-oriented and include several of his publications, notes on particular subject areas, and reviews of work in the field of psychiatry. Also present are civil and military documents pertaining to Montassut, as well as correspondence between colleagues, including the noted French psychiatrist Léon Chertok. The bulk of his research is founded in studies on depression, melancholia, and epilepsy. Additionally, the papers include documents related to his professional involvement as interim director at the Centre Neuro-Psychiatrique de Moiselles and as president of the Société Française de Médecine Psychosomatique.

Marcia M. Mathews papers and photographs, 1833-1976, bulk 1939-1976 3.0 Linear Feet (4 boxes; 1 oversize folder)

Marcia M. Mathews (1904-1990) was an art historian and author residing in Durham, North Carolina. Collection comprises materials relating to two research projects conducted by Mathews: one on Roger Fenton, lawyer and early English photographer; and a later project on African American sculptor Richmond Barthé. The Fenton series includes letters (1940s-1950s) from Fenton descendants, many of which comment on the aftermath of the war; images of the family home, Crimble Hall in Rochdale, England; photographs of Fenton and his family (1860s); and modern copies of his own photographs (1850s). The Barthé papers consist of a draft biography by Mathews, and 134 photographs of his sculptures and other artwork, as well as early portraits of Barthé and his family, and were acquired by the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture. Although Barthé had relationships with men over his lifetime, the biography appears to make no overt mention of his sexuality. The collection also includes a large scrapbook for the year 1939 containing U.S. news stories and articles about the war and on Fascism in the U.S.

Margaret Fishback was an advertising copywriter for Macy's, Cecil & Presbrey, Warwick & Legler, Young & Rubicam, Doyle Dane Bernbach, and a number of freelance clients. A poet, columnist, and author of prose work, she contributed frequently to national magazines and published several books. The Margaret Fishback Papers span the years 1863 through 1978 and document Fishback's dual careers in advertising and writing as well as her personal life. The collection includes correspondence, layouts, drafts, galley proofs, radio scripts, working copy of advertising text, poetry, prose, published material, appointment books, scrapbooks, photographs, and other materials. Former President of the Abortion Conversation Project; founder and past president of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers. Johnson was also one of the founders of the Abortion Care Network and Board President from 2008-10. Collection comprises primarily printed materials that document Johnston's work as an activist at the national level. Includes the abortion provider newsletter Feminist Caucus News (1989-1991), which later became Networks (1992-1998 and undated). In addition, there are copies of Johnston's counseling aids, including the workbooks Abortion: Which Method is Right for Me?; Pregnant? Need Help? A native of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Margaret Taylor Smith attended Duke University from 1943-1947. After graduating with a degree in sociology, Smith and her husband relocated to Birmingham, Michigan. Smith raised four children while taking an active part in her community through volunteer work and leadership. Smith's work as a research associate studying family life became the basis for a 1987 book, Mother, I Have Something to Tell You. Smith served as the chair of the Board of Trustees of the Kresge Foundation, a national organization that awards grants to support non-profit organizations. In addition, Smith continues her commitment to Duke University by holding leadership positions on multiple boards, by acting as a founding member and chair of the Council on Women's Studies, and by enabling the creation of the Sarah W. and George N. Taylor Endowment Fund for women's leadership and the Margaret Taylor Smith Endowed Directorship for Women's Studies. The Margaret Taylor Smith Papers contain materials dating from 1918 to 2010, with the bulk dating between 1980 and 2008. Maria de Bruyn is a medical anthropologist who worked for non-profit organizations in The Netherlands and United States, as well as international non-governmental and United Nations agencies, in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) with a special focus on HIV and AIDS and health-related human rights. She served on the Global Programme on AIDS Global Management Committee Task Force on HIV/AIDS Coordination as one of three nongovernmental organization (NGO) representatives; this Task Force contributed to establishing NGO participation in the governance of UNAIDS. She was also a co-founder of the ATHENA Network to advance gender equity and human rights in the global response to HIV and AIDS and worked with groups of women living with HIV on sexual and reproductive rights and advocacy. This collection includes de Bruyn's writings, work from her consultancies and other trainings and workshops, and her subject files on topics such as HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health, human rights, condoms, discrimination, youth, sex work, and women's health issues. Collection comprises 25 black-and-white and 48 color photographs taken from 2001 to 2012 by Marion Belanger, documenting the intersection of natural and human-built environments. Belanger's series "Everglades," taken in Florida between 2001-2004, presents images of wildlife and natural landscapes affected by the impacts of tourism, agriculture, migrant worker housing, construction, and activities of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army. Her portfolio "Rift/Fault," shot between 2006-2012, documents zones in California and Iceland where the San Andreas Fault and the Mid-Atlantic Rift exist - visibly or invisibly - alongside human environments; subjects in this series include housing developments, monitoring stations, geologic features and landscapes, coastal roads, and geothermal structures such as greenhouses. The digital inkjet prints in both series measure 13 or 13 1/2 x16 inches. Both projects were published as photobooks (2009 and 2012, respectively). Marion Timothy Plyler was born in Iredell County, N.C., near Statesville in 1867. He graduated from Trinity College in 1892 with a B. A. degree and played on the school's first football team. He earned his M. A. degree at Trinity in 1897 and received his Doctor of Divinity degree from Duke University in 1937. Additionally, Dr. Plyler received the M. A. degree and the D. D. degree from the University of North Carolina in 1905 and 1931, respectively. Dr. Plyler was ordained as a minister in the Methodist Church in 1892. Contains typescripts, correspondence, and printed matter, with the bulk of the material consisting of the manuscript of Dr. Plyler's unpublished biography of William Preston Few, written in 1948-1949, as well as copies of Few's writings and addresses. The collection ranges in date from 1832-1950.

Born in 1835 in area of Virginia that is now West Virginia; Confederate officer during the U.S. Civil War, and U.S. Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries from 1879-1895. The collection concerns early history of the fur trade and the French-Indian War; events during the Civil War, including McDonald's position as ordnance officer at Vicksburg, Miss. for the Departments of Mississippi and Eastern Louisiana; his appointment in 1879 as Fisheries Commissioner; the organization and work of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and to a lesser extent the Sons of the American Revolution. The Civil War papers are particularly substantive, giving details on the Vicksburg Campaign, the role of African Americans in the war, and topics such as supplies, movement of troops, and other logistics. Letters from the 1820s written by his grandfather, A. W. McDonald, a colonel in the French and Indian War, touch on the fur trade and related topics; and early letters of the Reverend Robert T. Berry and the Griggs family, of Virginia, contribute to the genealogy of those families. Marshall's correspondents include Virginia politicians and U.S. scientists. Martha Foster Crawford diaries, 1846-1881 1 Linear Feet (7 volumes)

Collection contains diaries of Martha (Foster) Crawford as a young woman in Alabama, 1845-1851, and later as a Baptist missionary to China. Topics include conditions in Shanghai from 1852 to 1864 and afterwards at Tengchow, Shantung, and her reactions to the Civil War in the United States. Her diary shows the impact of the American Protestant missionary on China with a day-by-day record of her life. The Shanghai period covers the Taiping rebellion and discusses the hope that the rebellion might furnish a means for converting the Empire to Christianity. Included also are several printed pamphlets and an original manuscript history of missions in China.

Several of the stereographic photographs are also portraits, most often showing Maxwell positioned within displays of her taxidermy birds and mammals; however, the majority of the stereographs depict her displays at the Centennial Exhibition and at the Rocky Mountain Museum in Boulder. The clipping describes the birds and mammals represented at her Centennial Exhibition display and provides a review of her work.

Mary Alves Long papers, 1944-1953 (bulk 1950) 0.2 Linear Feet approximately 100 Items

Mary Alves Long was born in Randolph County, North Carolina in 1864. She graduated from Peace Institute [College] in Raleigh, NC and eventually earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Her autobiography High Time to Tell It was published by the Duke University Press in 1950. The bulk of the material is from 1950, after Mary Alves Long's book was published. Correspondence makes up the majority of the papers. There is one postcard dated 1944 and a letter dated 1953. The rest is dated 1950. Also included in the collection is a book jacket from her book High Time to Tell Itas well as clippings and a few photographs.

Mary B. Tuckey poems, 1845-1846 0.4 Linear Feet (1 item)

Collection comprises a volume containing nine handwritten poems prepared by Mary B. Tuckey and others for the 1845 anti-slavery fair held in Boston, Massachusetts, but brought together in a presentation volume. The volume features hand-painted covers and two illustrations, and was presented to Maria Weston Chapman, editor of the Boston Liberty Bell, by Mary Mannix, secretary of the female anti-slavery society in Cork, Ireland, in 1846. The volume was enclosed in a case with a leather spine, with initials "M.M. to M.W.C" and dated "Cork, 1846." One of the poems commemorates Frederick Douglass' visit to Cork.

Journals (1827-July-1832 Jan. 20) in the form of diary entries and extracts from letters, written principally while the author was travelling with family and friends in France, Switzerland, and Germany between July and October, 1827. The bulk of the entries are written from Paris and include an account of a meeting with a group of Osage Indians that were visiting there. Other entries describe the local landscape, history, folklore, and customs of the various places visited. There are numerous color and pencil drawings that illustrate the text. Also includes one letter (1878 Oct. 10) and a clipping.

Mary Lillian Duke Biddle (1887-1960) was the only daughter of Sarah P. and Benjamin N. Duke and one of the heirs of the Duke family fortune. This collection documents her personal and family life in New York, NY and Durham, NC as a wealthy socialite and philanthropist in the first half of the 20th century. Her philanthropy included notable contributions to Duke University related to the Duke Homestead, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, and Duke University Libraries, and she established the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation to carry on this work after her death.

She continued her family's legacy of philanthropy, with a focus on the arts, education, and rehabilitation, and became civically and politically active beginning in the 1950s, espeically in Durham and NC.

Carson McCullers' psychotherapist, friend, and physician; resident of Nyack (Rockland Co.), N.Y. Chiefly letters to Dr. Mercer from Mary Tucker, Carson McCullers' piano teacher and long-time close friend, mostly about McCullers, with a few copies of letters from Mercer to Tucker. Topics include McCullers' mental and physical health; Mercer's care of the young woman; McCullers' work, long illness, death, and funeral; Tucker and Mercer's love and admiration for the author; and their opinions on various McCullers biographers. Later letters contain mostly information about Tucker's family. An unsigned letter from Carson McCullers, dated 5 May 1962, is also in the collection.

Mary Gorham Paine Diary, 1879-1884 and undated 0.1 Linear Feet 1 Item

Mary Gorham Paine (b. 1843) of Yarmouth, Massachusetts, was married to Eben W. Paine (1835-1904) of Brewster, Massachusetts, a merchant ship captain in the trade between Boston and Zanzibar. They had one son, Allan Thatcher Paine (b. 1882). The collection consists of a single diary kept by Mary Gorham Paine as she traveled twice by ship from Boston to islands near Madagascar. Forty-six manuscript pages provide both a day-by-day account of her trip aboard the Sarah Hobart to Nossi-Be (present day Nosy Be) from December 25, 1879 to May 4, 1880, and a three-page, mid-journey synopsis of the passage with her young son to Reunion Island, begun on December 13, 1883. As is made clear by the text, the intent of both voyages was to join her husband who was probably located in Zanzibar at the time. Newspaper clippings chiefly concerned with literary topics, news and issues relating to Africa, and obituaries for her husband and others are pasted into 18 pages following the narrative portion of the diary together with a photograph of a man and another of a baby, most likely her husband and son. The diary as a whole provides some insight into the life of a sea captain's wife and a description of long-distance ocean travel aboard a barque such as the Sarah Hobart.
