Todd Sagraves was Professor Emiritus of Business Education at Central Connecticut State University. Collection consists primarily of 16mm films and film clips of television commercials, along with explanatory documentation for two films, How to Sell Creatively (produced by Dartnell Corporation) and Television Advertising Commercials (edited by Sagraves), and other printed materials. Allen Building Takeover collection, 1969-2019 1 Linear Feet (1 box)

On February 13, 1969, Duke University students in the Afro-American Society occupied the the main administration building to bring attention to the needs of Black students. These needs included an African American studies department, a Black student union, and increased enrollment and financial support for Black students. This and subsequent events became known as the Allen Building Takeover. The Allen Building Takeover Collection contains announcements; flyers; publications; correspondence; handouts; reports; transcripts; ephemera; clippings; a bibliography; photographs documenting Black Culture Week (Feb. 4-12, 1969) and the Allen Building Takeover (Feb. 13, 1969); and items related to student demands, statements by Provost Marcus Hobbs and by Duke President Douglas Knight, student convocations and demonstrations both in support of and against the Takeover, and later events on the Duke campus and in Durham, N.C. In addition, the collection contains clippings and artwork related to remembering the Takeover, including the 2002 Allen Building lock-in.

Allen Building Takeover Oral History collection, 1985 1.5 Linear Feet

Raleigh, North Carolina attorney. Correspondence, newspaper clippings, broadsides, and other records of Allen Langston related to his involvement in several North Carolina political campaigns from the 1940s-1960s. Specific campaigns covered include: Kerr Scott's, William B. Unstead's, and Terry Sanford's gubernatorial campaigns in 1947-1949, 1952, and 1960, respectively; and Frank Porter Graham's campaign for U.S. Senate in 1950. Papers from Scott's campaign deal specifically with his attack on his opponent, State Treasurer Charles M. Johnson, for allegedly mismanaging public finances.

Allen L. McKellar was an African American sales and marketing executive based primarily in the St. Louis, Mo. area and one of the first business professionals to break the color barrier in major American corporations. The Allen L. McKellar papers include clippings, correspondence, financial and sales reports, photographs, sales training and other manuals, newsletters, research reports and other printed materials relating to McKellar's career marketing Pepsi and Falstaff beer products to African American and minority consumers. Celebrity individuals and civic institutions represented in the collection include Barbara McNair, Chicago Urban League, Hank Aaron, James Brown, National Business League and the United States Brewers' Association. Alliance for Audited Media microfilmed reports, 1914-1999 and undated 8.0 Linear Feet

The Alliance for Audited Media (AAM) is a research firm that provides data services to the advertising and publishing industries. It is headquartered in Arlington Heights, Ill. The collection consists of over 500 16mm microfilm reels of archived printed reports produced by the AAM for subscribing newspapers and publications distributed primarily in the United States and Canada. The reports depict circulation data in a variety of contexts, including coupon distribution, geographical penetration, interactive media, market coverage, trends, and Zip Code analyses. Alliance for Guidance of Rural Youth records, 1887-1963 and undated, bulk 1914-1946 21.5 Linear Feet (Approximately 15,900 items)

The Alliance for the Guidance of Rural Youth was a vocational guidance service organization originally created under the leadership of Orie Latham Hatcher as the Virginia Bureau of Vocations for Women (1914-1921), and later known as the Southern Woman's Educational Alliance (1921-1937). Disbanded in 1963. The records comprise an extensive set of organizational records for Alliance for the Guidance of Rural Youth and its predecessors. Series include correspondence, administrative files, project files, conference files, subject files, writings and speeches, publications, clippings, press releases, and photographic materials, which include prints and nitrate negatives. The records document the organization's evolution from its early focus on increasing vocational opportunities for educated southern women and rural high school girls to its later activities in providing county-wide vocational programming for rural youth. Additional subjects addressed in the papers and photographs include economic conditions throughout the South; migration patterns from U.S. rural regions to cities; Appalachian culture, including crafts and music; community life in the South; and employment for African Americans. The collection includes 42 matted platinum prints of rural citizens and scenes in Kentucky taken in the 1930s by noted photographer Doris Ulmann, and include a portrait of her assistant and folklorist, John Jacob Niles.

Allyson Kay Duncan is a U.S. Circuit Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. She is the Fourth Circuit's first female African American judge. This collection consists largely of personal and professional correspondence from Duncan's nomination, induction, and service on the Fourth Circuit, with letters from family, friends, and colleagues across the legal profession. The bulk of the collection dates from the 2000s, but includes some assorted materials from her work as an attorney for Kilpatrick Stockton and the NC Utilities Commission in the 1990s.

Alma S. Wall papers, 1905-1944 136 items

After placing her ill husband, Samueal Wall, in a sanitarium, Alma Stikeleather Wall traveled to New York, where she became known as a master of dialects, a singer of spirituals, and a storyteller. She was a great niece of Chief Justice John Marshall. The collection includes some of her writings, photographs of slaves, and photographs documenting the results of the 1926 Miami hurricane. Some correspondence concerns the mental illness of one of Wall's daughters. There are also certificates, a William Jennings Bryan speech, a scrapbook, and diaries belonging to Wall and her daughter.

The collection contains five scrapbooks. Four scrapbooks (1-3, and 5) feature literary figures, including authors, poets, playwrights, essayists, and biographers. Scrapbook 4 features celebrities, political figures, and professors. All the scrapbooks primarily contain clippings from newspapers and journals, including articles, poetry, book reviews, obituaries, and editorials. In addition, there are loose scrapbook pages and loose material for creating pages.

Alonzo G. Beardsley papers, 1787-1897, bulk bulk 2 Linear Feet (4 boxes, 1,597 items (including 1 vol.))

This collection, largely the correspondence of the law firm of Theodore Medad Pomeroy, William Allen, and Alonzo G. Beardsley (founded c. 1868), also contains the papers of several combinations of lawyers who preceded them, including John Porter, judge and state senator. During the 1850s the collection also includes the letters of Samuel Blatchford, a New York City attorney. From 1840 to 1860 the papers concern business and legal practice in New York state and throughout the northeastern United States. The Civil War period papers of Theodore M. Pomeroy, U.S. Representative from Cayuga County, N.Y. include mention of appointments and promotions; aid to wounded soldiers; defenses on the Great Lakes, the organization of New York regiments, the Conscription Act of 1863, civilian morale, and the activities of Southern sympathizers. Post Civil War materials include the papers of the Dodge and Stevenson Manufacturing Company, makers of reapers and mowers. Letters after 1870 include information about gold mining in North Carolina and Alabama, 1872, and N. M. Osborne & Company, makers of harvesting machines. There is also genealogical material for the Van Dorn, Peterson, and Quick families of New York.

Alonzo Reed letters, 1864-1866 0.1 Linear Feet

Union soldier in the 102nd Regiment Infantry, U.S. Colored Troops. Collection consists of 21 personal letters of Alonzo Reed written while stationed in South Carolina during the latter part of the Civil War. Reed seems to have written some of the letters himself, while others were written for him by friends; all are addressed to his mother. He seems to have been in a camp in Detroit, Michigan, then was stationed in Hilton Head, S.C. in the summer of 1864; he remained there until 1865, when he was sent to Charleston, S.C., and then to Savannah, Georgia, and back to eastern S.C. for the duration. The letters indicate that Reed's regiment was often on picket duty, but also provide some descriptions of warfare and the ransacking of plantations. Reed, who was nearly illiterate, provides brief insights into daily camp life in terms of references of illnesses, hunger, not being paid for many months, and life as a soldier in the midst of war. Reed occasionally refers to the reception they received from both whites and blacks in the South. He also writes about fixing railroad supply lines and utilizing surrendered Confederate soldiers to aid in this work. In November 1864, he inquires as to whether African American men are being allowed to vote in the North and indicates that they are in the South. Arranged in chronological order.

Alonzo William Slayback Diaries, 1898-1901 0.1 Linear Feet 2 Items

Alonzo William Slayback (1879-1969), of St. Louis, Missouri, was the youngest of six children and the only son of Col. Alonzo W. Slayback (1838-1882) and Alice A. Waddell (1839-). The collection includes two diaries kept by Alonzo William Slayback from 1898 to 1901. The first diary consists of 17 double-sided pages of remarks fastened with a metal brad to several small slips of paper that serve as an index. The 43 numbered remarks, which range in date from October 20, 1898, to August 19, 1899, and undated, describe Slayback's conversations, encounters, and dates with several different women. The second diary, a small account book from the Merchant's National Bank of St. Louis, contains 42 pages of letters addressed to V, Veda, or Olga; the woman Slayback loved whose fickleness elicited passionate and conflicted feelings in him. Eighteen letters are dated from December 4, 1899, to November 16, 1901. Together, the diaries provide insight into dating and courtship in St. Louis, Mo., at the end of the 19th century.

Aluminum Company of Canada. Tribute to James B. Duke, 1968 1.5 Linear Feet

The Aluminum Company of Canada (Alcan) was an aluminum mining and manufacturing company originally founded in 1902 as the Northern Aluminum Company. It is now part of Rio Tinto, headquartered in Montreal. James Buchanan Duke (1856-1925) was an American industrialist in tobacco and hydroelectric power based in Durham, N.C. and New York, N.Y. Collection consists of two photograph albums presented by the Aluminum Company of Canada (Alcan) to Duke University that commemorate James B. Duke's trips to the Saguenay (1915) and Quebec (1925) regions of Canada and relate to Duke's involvement in the development of hydroelectric power and aluminum smelting plants there. The collection also includes a history of Duke's activities in the Saguenay region written by T.L. Brock (Assistant to the President at Alcan), along with some pamphlets about Alcan and the city of Arvida. Individuals depicted in the photographs include Andrew Mellon, Arthur Vining Davis, Richard B. Mellon, and William States Lee (J.B. Alva Carmichael Smith papers, 1840-1969 4225 items

Alva Carmichael Smith, businessman, managed the Southern Coal Company at Columbus, Georgia, from about 1911 until the early 1930s. He was active in politics in Columbus, where, in 1941, he had been a member of the local executive committee of the Democratic Party for 22 years.The bulk of the collection includes correspondence (1913-1933), relating to Smith's position as manager of the Southern Coal Company, dealing with miners and shippers in Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and customers in Alabama and Georgia. Includes material on his membership in the local Kiwanis and Masonic organizations.

Alvin T. Parnell photographs of Durham, North Carolina, circa 1898-1986, bulk 1910-1960 1.5 Linear Feet (2 boxes; 183 items)

Alvin T. Parnell was a commercial photographer based in Durham, N.C. Collection chiefly consists of 167 black-and-white photographs of the city and people of Durham, North Carolina. The majority, chiefly taken by Parnell from 1920 through the 1950s, are views of downtown streets, commercial and industrial buildings, churches, and infrastructure, especially transportation. Many sites are related to the tobacco manufacturing businesses based in Durham. A few are of African American tobacco workers posed in the field and female factory workers ending their shift. Other images range widely and include a Trinity College (later Duke University) reunion, war veterans at gatherings, a minstrel band, a cart advertising Bull Durham tobacco, and tobacco fields with posed workers, white and African American. In addition, there are portraits of prominent Durham individuals and families. Formats include 85 vintage and modern gelatin silver prints, chiefly 8x10 inches, 82 contact prints, and 12 safety negatives. Includes an information folder with 1986 obituary and collection information.

Collection comprises seven panoramic color photographs measuring 17 x 34.5 inches, whose central panels portray older women who worked in manufacturing and are now retired or laid off; images set along each side of the portraits feature the sites where they once worked. The images were taken by documentary journalist Amanda Berg in five North Carolina locations - Banner Elk, Fayetteville, Lumberton, Massey Hill, and Newland - in 2014 and 2015. They form part of the multi-artist project "Where we live: a North Carolina portrait." Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The American Association of Advertising Agencies, founded in 1917, is the primary advertising industry trade organization. Collection includes correspondence, annual corporate and stockholder reports for member agencies, meeting minutes and speeches, biographical summaries, a subject file, and videotapes that document selected activities and functions of the organization. The collection has been compiled from a number of accessions received over time, and so does not represent a comprehensive archive of the AAAA. Certain aspects of AAAA activities, however, are well represented, including a set of card files that document the professional careers of AAAA members over a 50-year period, and subject files that focus on Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigations into complaints lodged against advertisers and advertising claims produced in a variety of media, with a particular emphasis on the ways that products were advertised during and in conjunction with children's television programming. Laprade was chairman of its Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure (1937-1942, 1948-1953), and president (1942-1943). The Durham, N.C. branch of the American Association of University Women was founded in 1913. The records of the AAUW Durham chapter span the years from its founding in 1913 through the 1960s. The central organizational records are almost complete for this period, including minutes of Executive Board meetings, Presidents' files, financial records, membership information, and national and state convention files. The Presidents' files contain chiefly correspondence, but programs, membership rosters, and leadership information are also present. Records are arranged alphabetically by file groups.

American Catalin Corporation salesman's sample book, 1928-1930 0.25 Linear Feet 1 item

The American Catalin Corporation was founded in New York, N.Y., in 1927; it developed the light-colored, transparent, filler-free Bakelite resin in a wide range of colors. Bakelite is the first synthetic plastic, developed by Dr. Leo Baekeland between 1907 and 1909. American Catalin Corporation used its form of the resin for costume jewelry, fashion accessories, radios, and other products. By 1942, the company suspended its manufacture of jewelry and cast items to concentrate on wartime production. After the war, petroleum-based plastics gained favor. Collection comprises a salesman's sample book in a black leather album used to provide a visual guide for the company's products. The album contains primarily 34 black-and-white 8x10 photographs (8 photographs are laid in, all but two are linen backed, those not laid-in are stamped on the back with "Johnston & Tunick Commercial Photographers"), as well as 17 typeset pages containing inter-office memos, sales tips, information regarding the company's competition, and customer testimonials. Several of the memos are written to the attention of D. J. Kelly, who was the salesman for whom the sample book was prepared. There is also a two-page key to the main group of 19 photographs, identifying the Bakelite products in each photograph, as well as the item's final producer. Seven of the laid-in photographs show the corporation's factory, including three of factory workers on the job. North Carolina affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, founded in 1965 and based in Raleigh. The records of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina (ACLU of N.C.) date from the 1960s to the mid-2000s. The collection is organized into the following series: ACLU Historical Files, Executive Director Files, Legal Program, Audiovisual Material, and Print Material. The files primarily focus on the investigation and prosecution of cases related to civil rights, public education relating to civil liberties, and lobbying for civil liberties and human rights. Materials include correspondence files from the Excecutive Director's office and other units in the ACLU of N.C., thousands of case files; administrative files on cases, operations, and attorney's activities; lobbying and subject files; and printed matter and other records relating to outreach and public education activities. There are also some a/v materials and electronic files. Topics include: the civil rights and legal status of legally under-represented groups such as juveniles and high school students, prisoners, gays, and immigrants; education and academic freedoms; religious freedom and separation of church and state; freedom of expression (including desecration of the flag); racial inequalities and injustices; reproductive rights; women's rights; police misconduct and the legality of search procedures; drug testing and the decriminalization of drugs; voting rights, including issues surrounding reapportionment; and workers' rights, including unionization. There are also files on the Ku Klux Klan, Confederate displays, and right-wing organizations. Many of these issues span decades of ACLU involvement. Researchers consulting case files and any other materials should be aware of privacy laws that govern the publication and use of these records. American Colony lantern slides of biblical lands, 1910s-1940s 1.0 Linear Feet (3 boxes)

Collection consists of a set of sixty-six commercially produced, hand-colored lantern slides, featuring photographic images taken in the early 20th century in areas of modern-day Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Also includes an original list of titles and a slide projector. The slides were sold in sets by the American Colony Stores, the commercial department of a missionary community based in Jerusalem. The landscapes and scenes were intended to illustrate biblical sites, or to remind the viewer of well-known biblical passages, but a few also depict other types of archaeological sites. The slides measure 4 x 3.5 inches. Locations include but are not limited to: the city of Jaffa (Tel Aviv); Sea of Galilee; Jerusalem; Bethlehem; Mount of Temptation (identified with Mount Quarantania); Jericho; Jordan River; Mount Hermon; Bethsaida; Mount of Olives; Emmaus (El- Kubebeh); the mosaic floor at Beit Jibrin; River Abana (El-Barada); Tyre; and the Temple of Sethos. There are also two glass slides with maps of ancient Middle East and Palestine. Five of the slides are damaged and are filed at the end of the collection. Collection includes a 7"x10" photograph album, containing 81 black-and-white photographs and photo postcards, documenting the presence of various military forces in Vladivostok, probably taken or collected between 1918 and 1920 by an unidentified soldier in the American Expeditionary Force sent to intervene in the Russian Civil War. Images include street scenes and landscapes, with some portraits and interior scenes; many contain printed or hand-written captions in English. Topics include various modes of military transport, especially ships and trains; military base scenes, particularly those of the Expeditionary Forces; military parades, including Russian and Bolshevik troops; various nationalities represented in the city and among the military forces (e.g., Japanese, Chinese, Czech, French, German, and British), as well as post-battle images of the dead and later funeral processions.

American Literary Manuscripts records, 1930-1981 11.5 Linear Feet 8598 Items

The American Literary Manuscripts Records (accession #5-6-81) (8,098 items, 10.8 lf; dated 1930-1979) documents the process by which the guide was created. It contains the correspondence of J. A. Robbins with each of his editors for each region of the United States (the Regional Chairmen), copies of the directives sent to participating libraries, copies of the master list of names to be checked, minutes of editorial board meetings, descriptions of the project, a proposal for a computerized updating of the census of library holdings of American literary manuscripts, negotiations with the publisher, grant requests, and reports. The correspondence between Midwest Regional Chairman, George Hendrick, and his Regional Associates is included in order to demonstrate how the project operated. The questionnaires returned by the libraries in that region are included. There are also ten printouts, included as a random sampling of printouts required. Acquired as part of the Jay B. American Newspaper Repository collection, 1852-2004 1200 Linear Feet (12,000 items)

The American Newspaper Repository was founded in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in order to save a unique collection of original newspapers that would otherwise have been destroyed or dispersed, and to preserve and make available these landmarks of American publishing. Nicholson Baker, author of numerous fiction and nonfiction works, including writings on libraries, founded and served as director of the Repository in conjunction with research for his 2001 release, Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper. The collection consists of approximately five thousand newspaper volumes (plus several thousand unbound newspapers), most of which came, directly or indirectly, from the British Library. There are long runs of major domestic newspapers as well as many foreign language and immigrant papers, such as the Yiddish Forward, the Irish World, and the Greek Atlantis, trade journals, Communist papers such as the Daily Worker, and other political papers. Many of these runs apparently exist nowhere else in the original format.

American Song Sheets collection, circa 1830s-1920s, bulk 1850s-1880s 3 Linear Feet 1982 Items

In the mid nineteenth century, publishers printed the lyrics to popular songs, without their tunes, on small sheets called song sheets, handbills, or broadsides. These sheets were often illustrated with a woodcut scene or portrait and sold at gathering places where people sang together. Duke's collection of American song sheets includes 1,982 of these ephemeral productions, from "The Star Spangled Banner" to "Pop Goes the Weasel," forming a rich source for research on American society and culture. The American South and the Civil War era are especially well documented, including well over one hundred Confederate broadsides. The collection also includes carrier's addresses, non-musical poetry, and other ephemeral verse. Publishers represented in the collection include: J. Andrews, A. W. Auner, Bell and Company, James D. Amory Leland Williams watercolors and etchings, 1921-1957 1.5 Linear Feet (2 boxes)

Collection is arranged in two series: watercolor paintings by artchitect and amateur artist Amory Leland Williams, painted from 1923 to 1939; and a group of etchings by various noted American artists, dating from 1921 to 1957, collected by Williams. Most of the watercolors measure about 12x19 inches, and were painted in southern France and Italy, with a few from southern California and the American or Mexican desert. In Europe, Williams painted in brilliant scenes of Greek temples, churches, barns, canals, gardens, and monuments. The etchings are by notable American printmakers such as John Taylor Arms, Louis Rosenberg, and others. A handful are in their original portfolios, as published by the Society of American Graphic Artists.

Amy Ashwood Garvey photographs, 1930s-1950s 0.25 Linear Feet (1 box)

Collection consists of 60 small black-and-white photographs dating roughly from the 1930s to the 1950s, belonging to Amy Ashwood Garvey, feminist and activist who traveled extensively and lived in West Africa, where most if not all of these images originated. The majority of the images are portraits of Amy Ashwood Garvey's many male and female acquaintances in Africa, who include female friends, politicians, heads of states, lawyers, and students. Other subjects include locales and native inhabitants of Nigeria and other unidentified places; gatherings such as meetings, a funeral, and a public hanging; and street and market scenes. Although there are photographs with inscriptions, names, and descriptions of the scenes, the majority are unlabeled; the few dates that appear are from the late 1940s. The travel snapshots are likely to have been taken by Amy Ashwood Garvey, but there are images that were sent to her by individuals as mementos, and some images of her taken by another unidentified person. She authored the zine Southern Fried Darling from 1995-2002, and Vortext, about meteorology and weather. Collection consists of about 150 zines, mostly self-published by women and girls in the United States. Subjects include feminism, riot grrrl, body image and consciousness, music, mental health, depression and mental illness, film, poetry, rock and punk music, comics, violence against women, sexual identity, homosexuality and bisexuality, transgender issues, and race. Amy Morris Bradley papers, 1806-1921, bulk 1841-1904 3 Linear Feet

Amy Morris Bradley was a white nurse and agent of the U.S. Sanitary Commission during the Civil War as well as an educator in Maine, 1840s-1850s, and Wilmington, N.C., 1865-1890s. This collection comprises correspondence, diaries, record books, and photographs documenting Bradley's family life and teaching in Maine during the 1840s, her travels throughout the South and Costa Rica in the 1850s, her duties as a nurse at several U.S. Sanitary Commission convalescent camps during the Civil War, and her post-war work in Wilmington, N.C., where she founded free schools for white children in 1866 and 1872 under the auspices of the Soldiers' Memorial Society and worked as an administrator in the public school system until 1891. The collection includes two salted paper prints and several albumen photographs of Civil War relief camps, some by noted photographer Alexander Gardner.

Collection of 31 black-and-white photographs by André Kertész provides a sampling of his compositional styles and topical interests. Taken from 1919 through 1984, the images chiefly feature street scenes from Paris (1920-1984), and several each from Budapest and New York City. There are also two female nude studies from his 1930s series "Distortions," two still lifes, and several landscapes. The majority of the gelatin silver prints are sized 8x10 inches, with four measuring 11x14 inches. On the backs are various markings, including dates and identifying marks by Kertész and others, with many bearing a Kertész estate stamp. Angier B. Duke Memorial, Inc. records, 1923-1999 14 Linear Feet (18 boxes.)

The Angier B. Duke Memorial was established in 1925 by Benjamin N. Duke to honor his son Angier Buchanan Duke (1884-1923; Trinity, 1905). The program was reworked in 1946-1947 when the Memorial Scholarship became the University's premier undergraduate award. This collection contains annual reports of various committees, correspondence and memoranda, studies, proposals, and financial records. A majority pertains to loans, awards, and scholarships funded by the Angier B. Duke Memorial.

Angier Buchanan Duke (1884-1923) was the second son of Benjamin N. and Sarah P. Duke and one of the heirs to the Duke family fortune. This collection primarily consists of financial records which detail how his executors managed his estate after his accidental death. A philanthropist in his own right, money from his estate in part supported the philanthropy of his mother, sister Mary Duke Biddle, and niece Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans.

Annabel Jane Wharton papers, 1961-2008 and undated 17 Linear Feet

Annabel Jane Wharton is the William B. Hamilton Professor of Art and Art History in Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. Her initial area of research was Late Ancient and Byzantine art and culture. The collection contains photographs, notes, and travel ephemera from research trips she took to sites in Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and other countries in West Asia. More recent research interests include the effects of modernity on ancient landscapes. Included in the collection are contains diaries kept by Wharton beginning in the late 1960s until 2008.

Anna Halprin papers, 1957-1995 1.33 Linear Feet

Anna Halprin (b. 1920) is a pioneering dancer and choreographer of the post-modern dance movement. She founded the San Francisco Dancer's Workshop in 1955 as a center for movement training, artistic experimentation, and public participatory events open to the local community. Halprin has created 150 full-length dance theater works and is the recipient of numerous awards including the 1997 Samuel H. Scripps Award for Lifetime Achievement in Modern Dance from the American Dance Festival. Her students include Meredith Monk, Trisha Brown, Yvonne Rainer, Simone Forti, Ruth Emmerson, Sally Gross, and many others. Collection includes books, magazines, photographic prints, clippings, flyers, written correspondence, programs, essays, and other printed materials.

Anna Jean and Lillian Snowden were two Black women born in Lexington, K.Y. Anna Jean became a teacher, and Lillian became an accountant and important figure in the Indepedent Order of St. Luke. Collection includes event programs, photographs, clippings, and other material that document the education and social lives of both women, especially their involvement in the Black community. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Anna Julia Cooper papers, 1934-1951 0.1 Linear Feet (13 items)

Anna Julia Cooper was an American author, educator, sociologist, speaker, Black Liberation activist, and one of the most prominent African-American scholars in United States history. Collection comprises 9 items from and to Anna Julia Cooper regarding the disposition and placement of the Charlotte Forten Grimke diaries and her desire to bring all five of Grimke's diaries into a single repository. Cooper was likely Grimke's literary executor and was trying to obtain three of five diaries from the possession of Prof. Ray A. Billington, professor of history at Smith College and Northwestern University. Billington tried to convince Copper to place all five diaries in one place (either the Library of Congress or Howard University). Billington also corresponded with Dorothy Porter, head of the negro collection at Howard University, and Rayford Logan, professor of history at Howard University, to inform them of his attempts to persuade Cooper to place the diaries there. Cooper eventually decided Howard University was the place where the diaries should be preserved. In addition, there are three letters regarding Cooper's endorsement of the appointment of Charles Wesley to the Washington, D.C., School Board in 1936. Also, there is a program for a religious service held for Frelinghuysen University in 1934.

Anna Letitia Barbauld and William Allen poems, 1823 August 23-30 0.1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Anna Letitia Barbauld was an English woman of letters who had great professional success at a time when women writers were still something of an anomaly. She is remembered for her poetry, children's literature, essays, criticism, and editorial works. She was rediscovered when feminist literary critics examined her place in British literary history. Barbauld was also an abolitionist, something she had in common with fellow educator and Stoke Newington resident William Allen. This item is a single small sheet of paper with an autograph manuscript poem by Barbauld on the front dated August 23, 1823, and another one on the back by William Allen dated August 30, 1823. Both poems were aimed at a juvenile audience. It is likely that their common interests and close proximity led them to develop a friendship. Although this was written towards the end of Barbauld's life, it is evidence that they still had at least an epistolary relationship in 1823.

Anna Lora Weiss Account Books, 1896-1910 0.2 Linear Feet 2 Items

Anna Lora Weiss, born circa 1858, lived in Boston's Dorchester section and owned several rental properties throughout the city. She was also a member of several voluntary and charitable associations, including the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and the Commitee on Music for the School Committee of Boston. Her family, including her mother Mary Clapp Weiss, brothers Richard and Carl, and sister Mary, were of German descent. Collection contains two account books, dated 1896-1904 and 1905-1910 respectively, kept by Anna Lora Weiss of Boston, Mass. The account books meticulously document Weiss's income, including significant income she received from her rental properties and other investments, as well as her expenditures on travel, household goods, gifts, and charitable contributions. In addition, the account books indicate that Weiss loaned money at interest to her brother Carl for his often unsuccessful business endeavors. In addition to her finances, the account books also document Weiss's daily activities and social and political interests. Together, the account books reveal that Weiss was an active, independent, and astute businesswoman. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.
