Collection comprises 8 medical account journals maintained by Budlong between 1817 and 1839. In addition to treatments provided, most often tooth extractions and bleeding, the doctor noted examinations and prescriptions for pills, oils, powders, elixirs, bitters, ointments, and asthmatics, along with cathartic sugars and throat lozenges. Fees are recorded for each entry and payments and regular audits noted. The entries were irregular in regard to date. Included in the collection is an undated typescript list of more than 100 individuals treated in volume 1, indicating that Budlong served as the primary physician for the area during its early settlement. There are indexes for volumes 2 and 8; and these, along with 76 items laid-in to the volumes, including receipts, blotting sheets, lists, calculations, and other notes have been removed to a separate folder. One item laid in is receipt unrelated to the volumes for a payment dated 1915.

Calla Raynor began her career at Duke in the Physical Education department in 1962 and served as the women's varsity tennis coach from 1967 to 1973. Raynor was instrumental in co-founding Duke University's women's basketball program. This collection contains correspondence, teaching materials, materials related to Ms. Raynor's education at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro), UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke University. The collection also includes sporting event materials, student athlete records, tournament materials, newspaper clippings, audiovisual materials, collegiate sports institutions and organizations for women, and other records from Raynor's career at Duke.

Calvin Hoover (1897-1974) was the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Economics and dean of the Graduate School at Duke University. This collection primarily documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, research, and professional and faculty activities. It forms part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Camilo J. Vergara is a documentary photographer, focusing on the evolution of urban spaces. Collection of color prints from Vergara's 2009 National Building Museum exhibit Storefront Churches, with photographs of urban churches, pasters, and murals from cities around the United States. This exhibit was part of a larger collection featured in Vergara's book, How the Other Half Worships.

The collection includes three publications related to the campaign to free Mrs. Rosa Lee Ingram, an African American sharecropper and widowed mother of twelve in southwest Georgia, along with two of her sons, Wallace and Sammie Lee Ingram, who were serving life sentences for the 1947 death of their white sharecropper neighbor, John Ethron Stratford. The handling of the case aroused concern about racial injustice in the southern judicial system which led to the formation of a national campaign for clemency. Through the efforts of the African American community, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the communist-influenced Civil Rights Congress (CRC), the Ingrams' original death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment in 1948 and eventual release in 1959. The three items in the collection were published in 1954, when publicity for the case was largely coordinated by the Women's Committee for Equal Justice, an off-shoot of the CRC headed by the civil rights activist, Mary Church Terrell. Although not explicitly dated, two items were clearly issued in early May: A broadside from the Women's Committee for Equal Justice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a four page newsletter from the New York headquarters of the Women's Committee for Equal Justice designed to raise support for the May 9th and 10th Mother's Day crusade for the freedom of Mrs. Rosa Lee Ingram and her sons. The earliest item is a four page newsletter published in February 1954 by the Pennsylvania Civil Rights Congress, Let Freedom Ring, volume 1, number 3. The cover page includes an article titled Goal for '54: Free Mrs. Ingram that recounts earlier efforts in the fight to free Mrs. Ingram and her sons and announces future campaign activities including plans to demand support from the Attorney General, Herbert Brownell, and the Secretary of the United Nations.

Advertising agency founded in 1911 in Detroit, Michigan. Campbell-Ewald held the Chevrolet account from 1919-2010. Collection consists of a booklet of photographs produced as part of an exhibit of Chevrolet print advertising held in May 1937. Acquired as part of the John W. Camp Fire Girls, now called Camp Fire, was founded in 1912 as an outdoor education program for girls and teenage women. This collection includes examples of Camp Fire Girls membership cards and forms, catalogs, programming materials, educational resources, administrative records and notes, correspondence, yearbooks, and some ephemera including a ceremonial dress and charter. Includes some materials from Mrs. Marion Hunt who served as a Camp Fire Girls guardian in the Boston, Mass. area in the 1940s.

The Campus Club was founded in 1914 as a way for the wives of Duke faculty members to create a social community and to support the University through educational events. The collection contains documentation of Campus Club events, business meetings, and financial transactions, as well as scrapbooks, correspondence, clippings, and publications.

The Duke University Campus Council is dedicated to providing support and direction for students through active leadership in the community and is the primary governing body of residential life issues. The Campus Culture Initiative (CCI) received its charge from President Richard Brodhead on April 18, 2006 in response to discussions concerning race and gender, class and privilege, and campus and community that reemerged after the 2006 men's lacrosse case. This collection contains President Brodhead's charge to the Campus Culture Initiative Steering Committee, the final report generated by the committee, and numerous documentation of what lead to the final report including agendas and minutes of the meetings, summaries of town-hall meetings, reports in service to the Steering Committee, and other assorted updates.

Capt. Francis Micara was a 1944 graduate of Trinity College at Duke University and a member of numerous student organizations and activities. In addition, the collection contains material concerning Micara's research at the Marine Laboratory at Beaufort, North Carolina, and assorted printed matter concerning class reunions.

Contains the records of the Appointments Office, a career placement service for students of Duke University. The Appointments Office was later known as the Office of Placement Services and Career Development Center and is currently (2007) known as the Career Center. This collection also contains professional correspondence, writings, and speeches of Fannie Y. Mitchell, director of the Appointments Office from 1947-1968. Types of materials include correspondence, speeches, short writings, conference presentation materials, annual reports, minutes, newsletters, fliers, clippings, and a photograph. Major subjects include Duke University students, the Appointments Office, Office of Placement Services history, Fannie Y. Mitchell, student employment, recruiting, and career guidance. Materials range in date from 1938-2000.

Materials from (or related to) the migration by sea of Cubans, Dominicans, and Haitians, including the refugee camp for Cuban and Haitian rafters that existed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, largely dating from 1991-1996. Collection includes camp newspapers and artwork created by refugees held at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba; materials from the U.S. Coast Guard and other military sources, such as newspapers written in Haitian Creole, photocopies of camp rules and refugee intake procedures, and a transcript from an introductory video shown to refugees arriving at the camps; magazines and media coverage of refugee situations, including some material on Elián González; photographs and slides of refugees, Coast Guard personnel, and conditions in the camps in Cuba. Refugees arriving in Miami are included as are photographs of the work of the Guantanámo Refugee Assistance and Services Program in Miami and in the camps in Guantánamo Bay.

Methodist minister from Salisbury (Rowan Co.), N.C., King was executive secretary of the Methodist Board of Education of the Western North Carolina Conference, 1934-1967. His wife, Mary Eskridge King, was active in affairs of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and president of the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Western North Carolina Conference, 1960-1964. The papers of Carl Howie King and of Mary Eskridge King span the dates 1918-1973, and document aspects of Methodism and politics and social movements in North Carolina during the later 20th century. Types of materials chiefly consist of correspondence, meeting and conference files, and biographical material on Carl and Mary King. Mary King's papers form the majority of the collection and document her extensive involvement in the Methodist Church and its organizations; topics of interest include Christian education, political conservatism and the John Birch Society, the Civil Rights movement, prayer in schools, the Vietnam War, student unrest, and communism. Carl King's papers include correspondence, writings, and notes from his student days at Trinity College, now Duke University, and Yale University.

Archivist and historian; chief of Foreign Affairs Branch at the U.S. National Archives. Collection consists of the biographical and professional files of Carl Ludwig Lokke, who was on the staff of the National Archives for many years. Material includes copies of his own research papers and many folders of research notes on his specialty, 18th century French colonialism in the West Indies colonies, and more specifically on the life and career of colonial administrator Baron Pierre-Victor Malouet, who was active mainly in French Guiana. There are also many transcriptions and photocopies of primary documents from archives in France and other repositories, as well as some microfilms. Other material includes Lokke's work files from the National Archives.

Carl Menger (1840-1921) was an economic theorist and professor. This collection primarily documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, and research. It forms part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Photojournalist (1907-2004) for the Farm Security Administration and Life magazine. Collection consists of 65 black-and-white and one color photographs taken during assignments for the Farm Security Administration and for Life magazine from 1935 to 1968. Subjects include rural America, migrant farm workers, and the community of Freer, Texas, during the Great Depression; the Sino-Japanese War and 1940s China; World War II, including the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, General MacArthur's return, the liberation of Italy and France, and the surrender of Japan; Japanese war crimes tribunals; the Fukui, Japan, earthquake in 1948; and the Korean War. Most of the images measure 8x10 and 11x14 inches and have detailed captions. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Four cloth-bound souvenir albums house 92 oversize mounted albumen prints of Venetian landmarks, taken by notable photographer Carlo Naya during the 1860s and perhaps into the 1870s. Handwritten captions are expressed in Italian with some English terms, and are transcribed exactly as they appear. Nearly all the images measure 10 5/8 x 13 7/8 inches, and almost all bear the studio negative number. Subjects include well-known landmarks of Venice, including churches, palaces, canals, bridges, and piazzas, along with city monuments and statuary such as the Winged Lion of St. Mark. Other images show interior details such as tombs, bas-reliefs, altars, and grand staircases. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Carl Pope (1961- ) is an American artist and printmaker. Collection consists of two black-and-white letterpress posters on 22x14 inch cardboard. The first poster reads, "Black lives matter: it ain't what the news told ya!" The second reads, "Is America the America I learned to imagine?" The original posters were created and published in Pope's book, The Appearance of Black Lives Matter (2018). Pope then re-created them in 2020 in response to current Black Lives Matter movement events, distributing copies of the posters to movement participants for the purpose of displaying them in their respective communities. Acquired by the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Carlton "Butch" Foust was an advertising executive who worked for J. Walter Thompson, Benton & Bowles, McCann-Erickson and other agencies, often in Latin America and Spain. Collection contains advertising and market research files, client files, brochures, tear sheets, annual reports, case histories, videocassettes, and other files documenting Foust's career as an advertising executive primarily in Latin America and Spain. Materials chiefly relate to Foust's work on behalf of clients such as Kraft Foods, Kellogg, Proctor & Gamble, Coca-Cola, and Unilever, as well as numerous alcoholic beverage companies. Carl V. Corley (1921-2016) was a white novelist and illustrator who served in the Marines during World War II. Collections contains the writings, drawings, scrapbooks, notebooks, correspondence, and published materials that document Corley's career and artistic output of Corley. The collection also includes typescripts and manuscripts of published and unpublished works of gay fiction, southern history, and heterosexual and homosexual erotica, some of which is in the form of comic books or graphic novels. The Sabina Allred Allen Collection of Carl Corley Papers includes correspondence and illustrations from Corley.

Carol Georgette Lake Bradley (1922-2006) was a distinguished graduate of Duke University, class of 1943. Collection consists of ten handwritten spiral-bound volumes containing her memoirs, in which she describes in detail her childhood, school years, World War II, experiences at Duke University, marriage, motherhood, and teaching career. Includes a narrative on the death of one of her children from polycystic kidney disease. Filed inside the volumes are letters, photographs, clippings, programs, and other memorabilia. Related materials, created by Bradley's family, comprise transcriptions, printed digital scans of the pages, and over 3000 electronic files, chiefly photographic images and texts such as transcriptions and indexes. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture at Duke University.

The Carolina Justice Policy Center (CJPC) was a nonprofit organization founded in 1975 under the name Prison and Jail Project in Durham, North Carolina, whose primary mission was criminal justice reform in North Carolina. The collection comprises CJPC's office files and records documenting its staff and activities over the span of four decades, as well as the work of other local, regional, and national organizations. The records include correspondence, including exchanges with inmates and attorneys; meeting agendas and minutes; operational files; court records and case files; research files; books, articles, reports, and clippings; some photographs; a few born-digital items; and analog audio recordings, films, and videos. Includes a group of materials on Velma Barfield, executed in 1984. Topics include criminal justice and sentencing reform; the death penalty; prison conditions and construction; juveniles and women in the court and prison systems; prison-related statistics; alternatives to incarceration; racial justice; violence prevention; and rehabilitative programs. Caroline Crane Marsh was a poet, author and advocate for women’s rights. Collection comprises a letter Caroline Crane Marsh wrote to Mrs. Botta (1872 May 24). Topics in the letter include the illness and death of her beloved niece, Ellen, the publication of her husband's confidential dispatches and his resulting illness, as well as the support her husband has had from officials within the Italian government following the publication crisis.

Collection comprises 63 exhibit-quality black-and-white photographic portraits of Durham, North Carolina citizens of all races, ages, genders, and sexual orientations, taken from 1989 to 1992 for a Center for Documentary Studies project. Subjects include activists, writers, older people, working class men, friends, couples, and families. Many of the individuals were alumni of Duke University. Also includes several prints and a brochure from an exhibit entitled "Home Ground," featuring Vaughan's family and landscapes from two family farms, 1977-1987. Formats include gelatin silver, Polaroids (some in color), and four palladium/plantinotype prints, along with a hand-pigmented, textured print. The photographs range in size from about 8 3/8 x 10 3/4 inches to 11x14 inches and are all matted, captioned, and signed. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The "Asians in America" house course was the first course pertaining to the Asian diaspora and Asian American studies to be taught at Duke University. Undergraduate student, Caroline Wang, organized and instructed the class in the Fall and Spring of 1982. The collection contains syllabi, course proposals, readings, and materials related to Wang's senior thesis about Japanese American internment during World War II.

Carolyn Kimmelfield Balleisen (1930-2020) was an attorney in estate and tax law and active member of several nonprofit organizations dedicated to social justice and other issues, including school desegregation, early childhood education, and fair housing. The collection includes materials related to Carolyn Balleisen's professional and community organizing activities, including her involvement with the National Council of Jewish Women; school desegregation in Louisville; education and schooling in Lousiville and Kentucky more broadly; tax and estate law; and other subjects.

Carrie F. Young was one of the first advocates of women's suffrage in California, and was an activist for other political causes. Young eventually became a physician, the first woman to receive a medical diploma in California, from the Oakland College of Medicine in 1884. Collection includes miscellaneous written materials; flyers, handbills, and broadsides; and copies of serials.

Carson McCullers (1917-1967) was an author, born in Muscogee County, Ga., as Lula Carson Smith. Her husband was Reeves McCullers. Her works included The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1940) and The Member of the Wedding (1946). Collection consists of correspondence between McCullers and Tennessee Williams, Dame Edith Sitwell, and cousins, Jordan Massee, Jr., and Paul Bigelow; writings by McCullers; poems by Dame Edith Sitwell; and clippings; together with correspondence from McCullers' mother, Marguerite (Waters) Smith, to Massee and Bigelow, and other papers. Topics include the relationship between McCullers and Williams and their lifestyles, health, moods, travels, residences, and attitudes toward well-known contemporary writers, and McCullers' relationship with her husband, Reeves.

Catherine Cameron Figart was a woman living in Pleasantville, New York, who kept a daily journal for much of her life. The Catherine Cameron Figart papers primarily consist of 33 bound diaries written by Catherine Figart, as well as a few loose papers and pieces of correspondence.

Lesbian feminist writer and magazine publisher, resident of Durham (Durham Co.), N.C.; co-founder of SINISTER WISDOM, a multicultural lesbian literary and art journal. The Catherine Nicholson papers contain materials dating from 1897 to 2005, with the bulk of the collection dating from 1974 to 2005. Materials in the collection primarily document Nicholson's directing and theatre related activities, her work on Sinister Wisdom, and her membership in the group Old Lesbians Organizing for Change (OLOC). The collection comprises correspondence; personal and professional writings and supporting materials; photographic materials; publicity about theatre and of plays directed by Nicholson; audio recordings; and ephemera. Included are play scripts written by Catherine Nicholson and other playwrights, and scripts with directorial annotations by Nicholson.

Theater chain in the United States; Loew's Poli Theater (later Loew's Palace) was located in Bridgeport, Conn. Consists of 41 gelatin silver prints depicting storefront promotion of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Many scenes show Bridgeport retail stores displaying images of Life Magazine cover photograph of Elizabeth Taylor, star in the film. Also depicted are Loew's theater signs advertising the film. Caviness Hector Brown was a law student at Trinity College from 1919 to 1921. The scrapbook includes autograph pages, photographs, clippings and memorabilia related to Trinity College arts and athletic events, the Debating Club and North Carolina state elections.

CBS is an American commercial broadcast television and radio network that grew out of a Chicago-based radio network in the late 1920s. Collection consists of 8 reports produced by CBS in the late 1930s addressing trends in radio broadcasting and advertising. Acquired as part of the John W. Dr. C.C. Adams (1884-1976) was a Black minister and active member of the National Baptist Convention, serving as secretary of the Convention's Foreign Mission Board from 1941 into the 1960s. Collection consists of correspondence and accompanying items Adams received as secretary of the Foreign Mission Board, mostly from members of the Pilgrim Baptist Mission in Issele-Uku, Nigeria. This correspondence documents the Foreign Mission Board's support of Pilgrim Baptist Mission's financial requests, expenditures, and growth. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Clement Claiborne Clay (1816-1882) was a lawyer, U. S. Senator, Confederate diplomat, planter, and enslaver from Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama. He was married to Virginia Carolina (Tunstall) Clay (1825-1915). His father, Clement Comer Clay (1789-1866) was a U.S. Congressman and Governor of Alabama. Collection includes personal, business, and political correspondence, bills of sale for enslaved people, accounts, diaries, memoranda, college notes, scrapbooks, and clippings of Clement Claiborne Clay, and of his father, Clement Comer Clay; his mother, Susanna Claiborne Withers Clay; his wife, Virginia Caroline Tunstall Clay; and brothers, Hugh Lawson Clay and John Withers Clay. Letters deal with family matters, including Alabama and Washington, D.C., social life, education, the management of cotton plantations, bills of sale for and correspondence regarding enslaved people, civic affairs in Huntsville; state and national politics and elections; Clay Sr.'s governorship; Clay Jr.'s service in both the U.S. and Confederate senates; ante-bellum politics; the organization of the Confederacy; Reconstruction politics, including Clay Jr.'s arrest, imprisonment, and his wife's efforts to obtain his release; Clay Jr.'s efforts to retrieve his property and re-establish farming operations, and to settle his father's estate; Virginia Clay's dissatisfaction with Reconstruction period social life, her tour of Europe, 1884-1885, and her efforts to operate the plantation after her husband's death.

President of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, 1923-1952. NC Mutual is the oldest currently active African American-owned insurance company in the United States, founded in 1898 and headquartered in Durham, North Carolina. The collection contains photographs, miscellaneous business papers, programs, speeches, clippings related to C. C. Spaulding, black civil rights, and to African American life more generally, in addition to administrative materials and various publications created by and related to North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company. These papers document the growth of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company in the mid-twentieth century, Spaulding's and the company's connection to the community, and their involvement in African American issues (local and beyond) and livelihood. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Chatterley span the years 1983-2013, and were created throughout his career as a documentary photographer, beginning with his MFA thesis project on religious experience in the U.S. The photographs are primarily black-and-white prints ranging in size from 8x10 to 18x24 inches. The most prominent themes in Chatterley's work are labor, community, and religious expression. He has photographed chicken slaughterhouse workers in Maine; Cambodian immigrants in North Carolina; David "Honeyboy" Edwards and other Southern blues musicians in Mississippi and on tour; a substance abusers' rehabilitation community in Durham, N.C.; tornado survivors in South Dakota; an abandoned religious theme park in Connecticut; and sheep rancher Judith Fae "Pachy" Burns in Montana. Some of his documentary work also includes oral history interviews. There are also several recordings of interviews with Chatterley, where he speaks about his work as a documentary photographer, and a book by Barbara Lau containing his photographs of Cambodian immigrants. In 1979, Duke University held a series of events celebrating the life of Benjamin Newton Duke. The collection includes clippings, invitations, scrapbooks, and an audio recording.

The Center for Death Penalty Litigation is a non-profit law firm that represents inmates on North Carolina's death row. Its work often involves the investigation of racism and the judicial process, and the treatment of people with mental disabilities charged with crimes in North Carolina. Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies awarded a CDS Documentary Essay Prize annually between 2013-2020. This collection contains the 5 photography prints from Nastassia Kantorowicz Torres' project "Point d'eau," which won the prize in 2018.

The Center for Documentary Studies was established at Duke University in Durham, N.C. for the study of the documentary process. The collection contains 51 black-and-white and color photographs, chiefly 11x14 and 16x20 inches, that were selected by CDS staff from portfolios published in DoubleTake magazine or by DoubleTake books from 1995 to 1997, and were exhibited at the CDS galleries. Many of the images were taken in the southern United States, but there are also scenes from California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, and from countries such as Mexico, Vietnam and Ireland. The Neighborhoods Project was created as part of the Community Programs department within Duke's Center for Documentary Studies. According to the CDS website, it offered North Carolina elementary school teachers an innovative and effective way to meet social studies goals outlined in the state's standard course of study. The project provided a way to engage students in their own communities, focusing on their individual lives and stories through photographs, narrative writing, and storytelling. It provided a series of experiential learning activities that encouraged the use of photography, oral history, and narrative writing in an exploration of community and citizenship. Collection includes black-and-white photographs, negatives, and slides from projects created by students at Durham's E.K. Powe and W.G. Pearson elementary schools between 1997 and 2004. The images document the social life and the built environment in Durham, N.C., in city neighborhoods where the students live; they feature children, pets, houses and places of business, groups of adults, and other neighborhood scenes where whites, African Americans, and Spanish-seeking citizens live. The Center for Documentary Studies opened in January 1990 and is an outgrowth of and replacement for the Center for Documentary Photography (1980-1990). The Center combines traditions of documentary photography and film, writing, oral history, and scholarly analysis in seeking to capture life experiences. Collection contains publications, calendars, announcement, brochures, newspaper and magazine clippings, a videocassette, and other materials such as administrative files and electronic files. The materials date from 1990 and the collection is ongoing.

Digital videos, photographs, and transcripts documenting critical oral history conferences in 2016 and 2018, with Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee veterans, hosted by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. The records of the Center for International Policy (CIP) span the years 1960 to 2016, and document in detail the organization's global activities in support of human rights as well as its internal administration, funding, and public relations outreach. CIP's chief areas of interest lie in United States foreign and military policies, including the activities of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Topics include human rights issues, U.S. relations with Central and South America, demilitarization, nuclear weapons, the Cuban trade embargo, money laundering and other aspects of international finance, terrorism, and the narcotics trade. The bulk of the files take the form of administrative files and records which contain correspondence, memos, data, reports, travel documents, and extensive files on other organizations; there are also many files of printed materials such as pamphlets, newsletters, and press releases.

Founded in 1998, the Center for Justice and Accountability (CJA) is a non-profit organization that primarily utilizes civil litigation against perpetrators of international human rights abuses. The CJA records span the dates 1945-2015, with most materials dating from 1972-2015, and consist of extensive case files, amicus briefs, research materials, a small amount of press clippings, CJA newsletters and annual reports, and audiovisual materials and electronic records related to cases or to research. The Center for Southern Studies in the Social Sciences and the Humanities was an interdisciplinary center established in 1965 in order to help "organize and systematize existing scholarly interest" in Southern Studies at Duke and elsewhere. Past chairs include Edgar T. Thompson and Thomas H. Naylor. The Center folded in the late 1970s. Collection contains materials pertaining to operation and activities of the Center for Southern Studies in the Social Studies and the Humanities including correspondence, minutes, manuscripts, printed matter, clippings, and other materials. The Center for Women Policy Studies was founded in 1972 as the nation’s first feminist policy analysis, research and advocacy institution. Collection documents the day-to-day operation, programs, and mission of the Center for Women's Policy Studies. The records include subject files, research files, publication materials, lectures, project documentation, program files, surveys, survey data and chronological files accumulated by the organization. Topics include women and AIDS, girls, teenage girls, work/life balance, women and violence, women and leadership, women and bio ethics and reproductive rights. The Central American Solidarity Committee (CASC) was a student organization chartered at Duke University around 1980. CASC was organized in opposition to U.S. policies and activities regarding Central America, especially military aid to Nicaragua, during the early 1980s. The majority of the records are made up of clippings and event flyers and posters, but the records also include correspondence, publications, petitions, bumper stickers, and other materials produced or collected by the Central American Solidarity Committee. The collection also features materials published and distributed by similar groups, such as the Carolina Interfaith Task Force on Central America, the Durham Action Committee on Central America, and the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, Southeast Region. Printed form in German language for proof of smallpox vaccination, filled out in manuscript hand with the name of the patient, a P[?] Maurer, 49 years of age, and the date of vaccination, August 12, 1872, and the date when the vaccination was declared successful and the certificate signed by the physician, a Professor Zelinder, August 20, 1872. The entry for the location may be Balaton, Hungary. In 1872 there was a very severe smallpox outbreak in England; in 1874, a compulsory vaccination law went into effect in Germany. The certificate bears a decorative border and a small shield. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

The Chamber Arts Society was created in 1945 and is dedicated to the performance of classical music by small chamber ensembles. This collection includes programs for many performances from 1990-2016.

Lawyer and businessman, of Ripley, Ohio. Correspondence and legal and financial papers, relating to Baird's law practice, his activities as paymaster of the U. S. Army (1863-1866) and as claim agent for soldiers' bounties and pensions (1863-1881); together with the papers of his son, Chambers Baird (b. 1860). Includes references to Ohio politics and business conditions during the antebellum period.

The Chanticleer is Duke's annual student-produced yearbook. Focus is placed on high- quality photographs. The collection includes photographs, slides, negatives and contact sheets. Duplicates exist throughout the collection. The Collection also includes editing notes from Chanticleer staff. Most of the photographs are in black and white, although there are some in color. Charis Books and More, founded in 1974 in Atlanta, Ga., is the oldest feminist bookstore in the Southeast. Charis Circle is a non-profit organization founded in July 1996 that furthers the mission of the bookstore by offering free educational and cultural events and programs to the community. This collection documents the daily operation, programs, and mission of Charis Books and More and Charis Circle, and the interrelated nature of these two organizations. The financial records include those for Charis Books and More and Charis Circle. The ephemera include bookstore flyers and announcements, t-shirts, banners, framed posters, and book bags. There are also board minutes, log books, instructions, and reports for the bookstore, records for community programs (Sister Girls and Young Writers); poetry workshop materials for "Leaving Home, Becoming Home"; 2,500 photographs; and some digital materials. Charles Abram Ellwood (1873-1946) established the Department of Sociology at Duke University in 1930, retiring in 1944. The papers feature incoming and outgoing correspondence, chiefly professional but with some personal exchanges; minutes and other records of Pi Gamma Mu; book and article manuscripts; speeches; news clippings and book reviews; and some photographs. There are some papers related to his teaching career, chiefly related to summer school appointments and his positions at Missouri and Duke. A microfilm copy of a scrapbook (circa 1900-1946) contains clippings from Ellwood's career. Professional topics in the papers cover discussion and criticism of Ellwood's books, articles, and views; international and U.S. sociology organizations; the sociology departments at the University of Missouri and Duke University; social ethics; criminology; the social function of religion; and the scientific and statistical approach to sociology. Issues in Ellwood's papers related to crises of the time include race relations; political systems and beliefs; Fascism; persecution of Jews in Europe; U.S. involvement in World War II; religion and ethics; militarism and pacifism; and compulsory conscription.

Methodist clergyman, missionary, and educator, of Ardmore, Oklahoma Chiefly personal and family correspondence concerning the work of Long and his wife, Lucy Maie (York) Long, as Methodist missionaries in Brazil (1911-1952), where he was also an official and teacher at Granbery Institute, Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Correspondents include Bishop César Dacorso Filho, John Monroe Moore, and Hugh Clarence Tucker in Brazil, and evangelist Davidson Victor York in the U.S. Other materials include writings, sermon notes, photographs, manuscript volumes, and printed materials, almost all relating to Long's activities in Brazil. Additions in the 1980s were processed separately from the main collection, and some unprocessed materials remain..

Charles Alfred Euston FitzRoy (1892-1970), 10th Duke of Grafton, was a soldier and farmer. The collection consists of a single daily diary that records the events of two trips taken by Charles Alfred Euston FitzRoy and his third wife, Rita, in 1949. Slightly less than half of the diary is used, 171 pages in all, with entries from February 7 through May 28, and from August 8 through October 7. The first portion of the diary describes FitzRoy's daily activities while staying on his ranch near Enkeldoorn in Southern Rhodesia (now Chivhu, Zimbabwe) in March and April and while in Kenya visiting acquaintances in February and on safari in May. The second used portion of the diary records the daily activities of FitzRoy, his family, and friends while hunting in northern Scotland.

Business and family correspondence and papers of Charles Anthony Hundley and of Daniel W. Owen, his son-in-law. Hundley's papers relate to his student days at Emory and Henry College, a proposed expedition to California in 1849-1850, business dealings in the Midwest (1850s), post-Civil War business affairs, and the settlement of Hundley's estate. Owen's papers begin about 1880 and chiefly concern politics and agriculture, but also include information on the higher education of women and World War I. Correspondents include Elisha E. Hundley, father of Charles, Claude A. Swanson, and P. B. Owen. Formerly known as the Hundley-Owen Papers.

Forty-one manuscript letters from Charles Bailey Reed to his mother (Delia B. Reed), his father (Dr. William Reed), his sister and his grandparents (Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Bailey). Most of the letters are written during his Medical Corps tour of duty in France, 1918-1919. There is also a typed transcript of a poem, "The doings over there," by Kent Thurber.

Radiologist who served in the U.S. American Expeditionary Forces Medical Corps during World War I; originally from Newburgh, Orange County, New York. Collection contains a few pieces of correspondence, telegrams, military orders, booklets, photographs and negatives, and ephemera collected by Captain Charles Bailey Reed during his service with the U.S. Medical Reserve Corps in France, 1918-1919. The items are mounted in two French-made scrapbooks or housed in loose groups. Materials relate to Reed's time as a medical radiologist at Evacuation Hospital Number One, Sebastopol Barracks, Toul, France. Hundreds of photographs, both loose and mounted, were taken by Reed in the U.S., 1914, 1918, 1924, and in Paris, 1918-1919, and in the Evacuation Hospital camp, 1918-1919. Commercially published photographs depict battle scenes and damage in France. Other items include newspapers reports of the Armistice; images from the Paris Inter-Allied Games, summer 1919; printed items produced for American soldiers stationed in France; and Reed's identity card.
