North Carolina educator and superintendent of public schools in Greensboro, N.C. The papers of Benjamin Lee Smith, North Carolina educator and Duke University alumnus, span the years 1916-1961, and contain correspondence, memoranda, clippings, and other printed material related to public education at both the local and state levels in North Carolina. There are also several dozen photographs of N.C. school buildings and personnel, circa 1930s-1950s. Papers are arranged in the following series: Correspondence, Subject Files (the largest series in the collection), Clippings, Printed Material, and Speeches. Other topics include prohibition and the elections of 1928, and religion and politics in North Carolina. A small but significant amount of material concerns school integration in Greensboro and associated civil rights issues in North Carolina (located within boxes 10, 11, 14-16, 21, 24, 26 and 31). Collection also includes material on charitable organizations in which Smith was active, especially the Methodist Church, North Carolina Education Association (NCEA), Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts, and the Horace Mann League.

Benjamin Lowy photographs of Iraq, 2003-2008 3 Linear Feet (2 boxes)

The collection consists of thirty-two 9x13 inch untitled digital color inkjet photographs taken by Benjamin Lowy, documenting the U.S. military presence in Iraq from 2003 to 2008. The prints are arranged in two series: Windows and Nightvision. Images in the Windows series were taken from the bulletproof windows of the armored Humvees in which Lowy spent most of his time while on missions in Iraq; they depict street scenes with Iraqi civilians, tanks, soldiers, checkpoints, military impoundments, street life, urban Iraqi culture, and a war-ravaged Iraqi landscape. Taken through U.S. military-issue night vision goggles, photographs in the Nightvision series reveal greenish images of late-night raids, prisoners and soldiers, landscapes, families, women, and street scenes. The images in this collection were published in 2011 as a photobook titled Iraq | Perspectives. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Benjamin Newton Duke (1855-1929) was a tobacco manufacturer, industrialist, and philanthropist of Durham, NC and New York, NY and a trustee and major benefactor of Trinity College (later Duke University). He was the son of Washington Duke, older brother of James B. Duke, husband of Sarah P. Duke, and father of Angier Buchanan Duke and Mary Duke Biddle. This collection documents his personal and professional life through his correspondence, financial and legal records, and photographs.

Benjamin Rush letter, to John Bayard, 1784, June 25 1 items

A copy, in an unknown hand, of a letter from Rush to Bayard regarding sentiments expressed in an earlier letter to General John Armstrong. The letter reflects post-revolutionary state politics in Pennsylvania. In the letter, Rush censures his fellow Presbyterians, who refuse to revoke the test laws and to admit amendments to the state constitution. He also condemns the taking over by the Presbyterian dominated state government of the charter of the College of Philadelphia, now the University of Pennsylvania, and refers to the College of Carlisle, or Dickinson College, established in protest to the first action. He regrets the inflammatory remarks and publications made by members of the state's single legislative body, the Council of Censors, and by Joseph Reed and Mr. Smiley, and deplores the character of Henry Osborn and Owen Faris.

Benjamin Sussman (1921-2003) was an advertising executive and founder of the Sussman, Jordan and Pollacheck advertising agency. He also worked for Petersen Publishing and as a freelance writer. Accession (2009-0238) consists of Sussman's original library of clippings on a wide variety of subjects, including a large section of vintage publications, that he used as inspiration and information in his work. The clippings include advertisements as well as articles, and are sorted by subject or topic using Sussman's own filing system. Acquired as part of the John W. U.S. physician; pioneer of vaccination in the U.S. Collection chiefly consists of photostatic copies of correspondence written to Waterhouse, and brings together material from various U. S. collections. Includes some original letters acquired by Duke University. The bulk of the material, correspondence and minutes of meetings of the Corporation of Harvard College, relates to vaccination and Waterhouse's removal from his Harvard professorship. Ben Mallard was a Black sales representative for Budweiser based in Los Angeles, C.A., who worked for Anheuser-Busch in the 1950s and 1960s. He was also an active member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. Collection consists mostly of black-and-white photographs related to Mallard's career as a Budweiser sales representative in California, showing him with products and at events. Ben Rosen is an American graphic designer and visual communications consultant. Rosen worked as a designer for J. Gordon Carr and Associates and the Blaine Thompson Company before founding his own firm, Ben Rosen Associates, in 1952, which specialized in corporate identity programs. Rosen is the author of three books on on graphic design and typography: Type and Typography (1963); The Corporate Search for Visual Identity (1970); and Digital Type Specimens (1991). The Ben Rosen Papers span the years 1936 to 2006, with the bulk of the collection dating from 1945 through 1991, and document Rosen's sixty-year career in graphic design and visual communications consulting. The collection contains materials in a variety of formats, including correspondence, writings, graphic design and printed materials, sketches, presentation boards, photographs, and slides, that document design concepts and programs (corporate logos, letterhead, packaging, industrial design, promotion) Rosen developed, through his firm, Ben Rosen Associates, for clients including American Loose Leaf, CCMI McGraw-Hill, Equitable Life Assurance, Exxon/Esso, Food Fair Stores, IBM, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, North American Reinsurance, Philip Morris, Richardson-Vicks, Russ Berrie, and Tishman Realty and Construction. The collection also includes manuscripts and published editions of Rosen's books on graphic design and typography, and touches on several of Rosen's commmemorative projects, including a President Kennedy memorial, a United Nations 20th Anniversary book, and Rosen's submission to the World Trade Center Memorial design competition.

Recorded earlier as the Benson Family Papers. Includes materials from the related families of Elias Benson, physician, of Marion Co., Alabama, and John Ford Thompson, officer of the Alabama Militia. The families emigrated from Greenvilee and Spartanburg counties, S.C., to Alabama in the early 1800s. Personal correspondence and business papers of the Benson, Thompson, and Moore families who migrated from Greenville County and Spartanburg County, South Carolina, to Alabama. Correspondence between the groups in South Carolina and Alabama is concerned for the most part with family matters. However, political events are occasionally discussed, and a number of letters, 1836-1840, deal with the Alabama militia. The collection includes letters reflecting conditions in Alabama during the Civil War; several items on medical education at the University of Louisiana (Tulane University), 1866-1868; and records of the Marion (Alabama) Grange, No. 95, 1873-1876.

Bernard Lafferty papers, 1952-1999 (bulk 1993-1996) 7 Linear Feet 1,875 Items

Bernard Lafferty was hired as Doris Duke's butler in 1987 and he remained in that position until her death in 1993. In her will Doris Duke named Bernard Lafferty as the executor of her estate and for a brief period of time he was President of the Doris Duke Foundation. After a lengthy trial disputing the provisions of the will, Bernard Lafferty surrendered his post as co-executor and membership in the Foundation. He was replaced by a Board of Trustees who took control over Doris Duke's assets. Bernard Lafferty died in 1996, where upon he willed his assets to the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. The collection spans the years 1952-1999, although the majority of the collection is concentrated in the years 1993-1996. The holdings in this collection are from Bernard Lafferty's personal files and include condolences after the death of Doris Duke, memoranda and correspondence regarding daily business activities of Doris Duke's estates and of the Foundation, invitations, meeting notes, lists of visitors to Duke Farms, and requests for donations.

Bert Cole Advertising System collection, 1897-1926 .2 Linear Feet

Bert Cole (1869-1958) was a circus performer, announcer, and advertising agent who developed a marketing scheme called the Bert Cole System in which circus elephants were draped with business advertisements during circus parades and local events. Collection includes black-and-white photographs and postcards, receipts and licenses, and correspondence that document Bert Cole's advertising business while working with circuses including the Charles Sparks Circus and the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus. The banners promoted a variety of businesses, including automobiles and automobile dealers; automotive tires; banks; flour and other food products; local retail and clothing stores; and tobacco products. Many of the photographs are annotated with the date and place the photograph was taken. Circus performers and clowns identified in the photographs include Bert Noyes, Louis Plamondon (1872-1934), Lon Moore (1865-1920), and Mickey McDonald, as well as images of Bert's father, circus owner George S. Cole, with his elephant-based advertising service he ran prior to Bert assuming the practice under his own name. Also represented in the photographs is the elephant Mary, part of the Sparks rail show, notable for having been executed in 1916 after killing her handler. Photographs depict locations throughout the South and upper Midwest, including Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Indiana, Wyoming, and Little Big Horn, Montana. Acquired as part of the John W. Photojournalist who documented the women's movement and associated human rights issues since the 1960s. The photographs in the collection date from 1959 to 2007, with the bulk taken by Lane in the 1970s and 1980s. Subjects focus largely on events and individuals. Events include consciousness raising groups, planning meetings, and local women's conferences. Large events include Equal Rights Amendment demonstrations, and International Women's Year and National Organization for Women conferences and marches, in major cities such as New York City, Washington D.C., Mexico City, and Houston. Other events folders document Pro-Choice rallies and protests addressing harassment, sexism, and violence towards women. Another large series documents women involved in the movement, from feminist leaders to event attendees and coordinators. Subject folder photographs are of women at work, women athletes, men for women's rights, and events relating to daycare, feminist slogans and signs, lesbian rights, opposition, women of color, sexist images, and sexual health. Smaller sets of images document protests against war, pornography, and nuclear power. The collection also includes photographs of Bettye Lane and her original inventory sheets. Beverly Buchanan was an African American artist who explored Southern vernacular architecture. This collection contains some photographs and images of her artwork, particularly "shacks" and modern ruins, as well as some correspondence from her to Courtney Reid-Eaton at the Center for Documentary Studies. Also contains some materials by Walter Buchanan, Beverly Buchanan's father, whose work as an agricultural scientist in the 1920s inspired her artistic practice and themes.

Bill Bamberger photographs, 1992-1997 4 Linear Feet 1722 Items

Collection consists of original black and white prints (thirty-nine 11x14's and one 8x10) and original color prints (thirty-one 11x14's) taken by Bamberger documenting the closing of the White Furniture Company of Mebane, N.C. These are the original prints used in the production of the book Closing: The Life and Death of an American Factory (1998) by Bamberger and Cathy N. Davidson. There are also proofs, primarily 3x5 machine proofs and 8x10 proofs of images selected as firsts, alternates, and seconds for the book; and related materials. Also included is a dummy of the book.

Bill Brown zine collection, 1981-2011, 1981-2011, bulk 1990-2005 4.8 Linear Feet (271 items)

Bill Brown is a filmmaker, photographer, and zinester from Lubbock, Texas. His films explore the landscapes of North America, including the United States–Mexico border, North Dakota missile silos, and the Trans-Canada Highway, and have been exhibited at film festivals and museums around the world. He received a BFA from Harvard in 1992 and a MFA from CalArts in 1997. Brown is the author of a zine called Dream Whip as well as a novel on the underground in L.A., Saugus to the Sea. In January 2013, Bill Brown donated his personal collection of zines, comprising 186 titles and almost 250 issues in total. Although Brown never actively collected zines, he was always eager to barter and trade with other zine makers. The resulting collection includes zines spanning from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. The zines are arranged alphabetically by title.

Bill Burk collection of letters and photographs from Sherwin Carlquist, 1997-2018 0.2 Linear Feet

"Bill" Burk, retired, botany librarian at the John N. Couch Biology Library, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Collection comprises three folders of letters written to Burk by botanist Sherwin Carlquist. The majority of the letters are accompanied by examples of Carlquist's black-and-white 8"x10" landscape photographs, including seven photographic prints on enlarging paper, as well as scanned copies printed on a laser printer. There are also advertisements for Carlquist's books of landscape photographs featuring male nudes. The letters are most often general holiday greetings Carlquist mailed to all his friends, usually annotated with specific notes to Burk; others are personal letters to Burk. Carlquist's letters mainly provide information regarding the accompanying photographs and his artistic approach to photography, especially the male nudes; there is additional commentary on the history of botany; his writing, publication, and research projects; the work of other scientists; and his personal life. Other topics include gay fiction and culture, the challenges of being gay in academe, and circumcision. Bill of indictment for African-American woman named "Blender", 1808 January 0.1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Collection comprises a bill of indictment for perjury against "Blender," an African-American woman who allegedly falsely accused a man of rape. Contains a list of 10 witnesses in the case, including seven women. In 1807 Blender accused Jonas Fairlamb of raping her, resulting in pregnancy. The indictment also mentions the alleged crime of "bastardy," but those words have been crossed out. Blender appeared before the justice of the peace for Delaware County, Pennsylvania, but now, some months later, it appears that she perjured herself. The indictment contains a description of the alleged sexual assault, and lists the contradictions in Blender's account of the rape and the timeline of events. Blender is charged with committing "wilfull & corrupt perjury to the great displeasure of Almighty God." In 1996, Bitch: Feminst Response to Pop Culture was created by Lisa Jervis, Benjamin Shaykin, and Andi Zeisler. After having a hard time finding critiques of sexism in pop culture in magazines and self published zines, they decided to make their own. Their goals are to write about sexism in pop culture, propose alternatives, and promote pop products that are pro-woman and pro-feminism. The magazine's final issue was April 2022. The collection includes production records for magazine issues, editorial correspondence, research files, meeting notes, promotional and subscription material, audio cassette and mini-cassette tapes, VHS tape, mini-disks, color and black-and-white photographs, negatives, color transparencies, and t-shirts and tote bags. Blackwell family papers, 1845-1976 and undated 1.6 Linear Feet

Collection contains primarily correspondence and printed materials. There are also three unidentified and undated black-and-white photographs, along with a few items representing the Livingston family, including a genealogy developed by Helen Thomas Blackwell. The correspondence contains mostly routine letters to Blackwell family members from other family members; including Alice Stone Blackwell, Anna M. Blackwell, Elizabeth Blackwell, Emma Blackwell, Helen Blackwell, Henry B. Blackwell, and Lucy Stone. There are also several postcards mailed to the Woman's Journal regarding subscriptions, address changes and other matters related to publication, or the editor's business acquaintances. There are several printed materials written by Blackwell authors, including "Philosophy of Re-Incarnation" by Anna Blackwell, and "Medicine & Morality," "Scientific Method in Biology," and “Erroneous Method in Medical Education" by Elizabeth Blackwell. However, the series primarily features printed items that were maintained in the Blackwell family library. Also contains a corrected typescript (1940s) of Ishbel Ross' Life of Elizabeth Blackwell along with notes from 1958 on the Elizabeth Blackwell award at Smith College.

Blanche McCrary Boyd papers, 1957-1984 10 Linear Feet 662 Items

Blanche McCrary Boyd is a writer raised in South Carolina. She has also lived and worked in California, Vermont, and New York. The collection consists of correspondence (1963-1984); notes, drafts, and proofs of her books Nerves, Mourning the Death of Magic, and The Redneck Way of Knowledge; reports on the Greensboro shootings (November 1979); and materials on the Democratic National Convention of 1980. Short stories, essays, reviews of Boyd's work, and photographs are also included. Many of the letters are long and substantive, including some retained copies of Boyd's own letters. Her report on the Greensboro shootings is based on a large number of newspaper and magazine clippings, also included in the collection, as well as interviews. Materials on Boyd's trip to China in 1983 are also found in the collection.

Blanche Simmons (1857/8-1941) was the daughter of Sir John Lintorn Arabin Simmons (1821-1903), Field Marshal and Colonel Commandant of the Royal Engineers, and his second wife, Blanche Weston. The collection consists of a single diary that records the events of two distinct trips taken by Blanche Simmons and her parents in 1879 and 1880. The first half of the diary documents a family vacation to Belgium and the Netherlands from September 19th to October 13th, 1879, with stops in Brussels, Spa, Utrecht, Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Ghent. The second half of the diary documents a trip to Berlin, Germany, from June 11th to July 9th, 1880, during which Blanche's father, Sir John Simmons, and Major Ardagh attended a conference in Berlin for "the settling of the Greek frontier" accompanied by Blanche, her mother, and their escort, Captain Wood.

Boatman Family papers, 1901-1981 and undated 72 Linear Feet 8620 Items

Methodist educators and family members from Kentucky and Alabama. The Boatman Family Papers span the years 1901-1981; the majority of the papers were generated by the Rev. Dr. Conway and Mrs. Caroline Boatman, Methodist educators from Kentucky. The collection is arranged in series by family member and institution, the most substantial series being the Conway and Caroline Boatman Series; the John Paul Boatman Series; and the Union College Series. Other smaller groups pertain to other family members. Family correspondence makes up the majority of the collection, but there are also scrapbooks; educational records (primarily financial); many photographs of Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky; and clippings and other printed items. Topics covered by the correspondence in the Conway and Caroline's papers cover their courtship (1909-1919); the Methodist Episcopal mission in Jubbulpore, India (1919-1923); and India Methodist Theological College (1923-1925). There are also many references to the three institutions where Dr. Boatman served as President - Iowa National Bible Training School (1928-1931), Snead College in Boaz, Ala., and College of Barbourville, Ky. (1939-1959). Fund-raising, especially during the Depression, is a commonly recurring theme. Other letters from sons of the Boatmans refer to their college years from the 1930s-1940s. Institutions referred to here include Drew University, University of Kentucky in Lexington, and Southwestern College in Kansas. Eula Brasher's correspondence documents the traditional customs and folkways of Northern Alabama's Southern uplands.

Collection consists of two large cloth-bound photograph albums dating from circa 1881, housing 56 large albumen photographs taken by noted 19th century French photographer Félix Bonfils, who owned the Bonfils studio, and his Syrian assistant Georges Saboungi. The images were sold as souvenirs, and portray cities and towns, landscapes, ruins, monuments, tombs, and other religious and historic sites of Palestine, in areas now occupied by Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. Locations named in the captions include Beirut, Bethlehem, Cana, Damascus, Galilee, the Holy Sepulchre shrine, Jaffa, Jerusalem, the Mosque of Omar at the Dome of Rock, the Mount of Olives, Mount Tabor, Nazareth, Samaria, the Tomb of David, the Wailing Wall, the interior of the house of the English Consul in Damascus, a "crusader's tower" in the village of Ramleh, and various other sites.

American educator, born a slave in Franklin County, Virginia. Founder and president of Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. Collection comprises correspondence and related material concerning the Carnegie Hall conference (January 6-8, 1904) and the subsequent formation of the Committee of Twelve for the Advancement of the Negro Race by Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois. The letters in the collection document the Committee of Twelve's work, contain commentary on the status of African Americans, and detail Washington's relationships with many of the key African American leaders of his day. The most striking is Washington's correspondence with W.E.B. Du Bois, where the tension and ideological conflict between the two men is clearly demonstrated. Boyd Ellsworth Payton papers, 1929-1977 and undated 5 Linear Feet 1,831 Items

Labor leader from Willingboro (Burlington Co.), N.J. Papers concerning the career of Boyd Ellsworth Payton, International Vice President of the Textile Workers Union of America. The papers concern three major aspects of Payton's career: the Harriet-Henderson Cotton Mills strike (1958-1961); his incarceration and writing of the book, Scapegoat; and finally his experiences after being released from prison. Included are genealogical materials, correspondence, legal papers, addresses and writings, miscellaneous items, radio scripts, pictures, and a draft of Scapegoat, entitled Prejudice + Politics = Prison. Other papers include items on the poll tax in the South, as well as pamphlets relating to labor unions and the South, the poll tax, and strikes. Clippings deal principally with the American Federation of Labor (AFL), AFL publicity, South Carolina Federation of Labor Convention, United Textile Workers of America convention, communists, and the Bessemer City strike. A 1929 scrapbook houses clippings pertaining to the southern textile strike in that year, and a 1946 scrapbook contains information on the Danville (Va.) Citizens' Committee, a group organized to fight inflation and high prices in Danville. Formerly part of the Labor Archives Collection. Original box numbers have been retained.

Bradley Family papers, 1774-1882 1 Linear Feet 792 Items

Stephen Row Bradley and his son William Czar Bradley were lawyers who, as residents of Westminster, Vermont, served in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives respectively. Later Stephen moved to Walpole, New Hampshire. Many prominent New Englanders corresponded with them about Federalist, Republican, and Democratic politics, patronage, and legal and personal matters. Stephen's son-in-law, Samuel Griswold Goodrich ("Peter Parley") was his most frequent correspondent. Other subjects of the correspondence include the Vermont militia, relations between the U.S. and Tripoli, attitudes toward the War of 1812, surveying of the northeastern boundary between the U.S. and Canada, General Lafayette's visit to Thomas Jefferson in 1824, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, and Andrew Jackson.

Bradley T. Johnson was a Confederate officer, lawyer, and politician, born in Frederick (Frederick Co.), Maryland who later settled in Virginia after the Civil War. The collection includes correspondence, personal accounts, Civil War reminiscences of campaigns in several states, a memoir of the 1st Maryland Regiment, C.S.A., a muster roll of the 21st Virginia, Company B, records of a Confederate prison hospital, and an incomplete diary of a trip to Cuba as correspondent during the Spanish-American War. Included also are a series of letters from Wade Hampton and from Joseph E. Johnston. Other correspondents include Henry Adams, James Cardinal Gibbons, and Henry Cabot Lodge along with an anonymous April-Dec., 1846 diary, identified with Isaac R. Watkins, law student in Richmond, Va. and son of prosperous Charlotte County family.

Brantley York was an educator, author, and Methodist clergyman in North Carolina. He organized Union Institute Academy at Brown's Schoolhouse in Randolph Co., N.C. in 1839, which would evolve into Normal College, Trinity College, and later Duke University. York also wrote an English grammar, as well as several other instructional textbooks. The Brantley York Records and Papers contain correspondence, a grade book, certificates, manuscripts, and published works. Modern materials were added to the collection; these include York family genealogical information, as well as clippings about York and his activities. Braxton Craven (1822-1882) served as an administrator and educator during the nineteenth century evolution of Trinity College (Randolph County, N.C.). Craven was Principal of Union Institute (1842-1851), President of Normal College (1851-1859), and President of Trinity College (1859-1863, 1866-1882). In addition, Craven actively participated in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and the Order of the Masons in North Carolina. Collection includes correspondence, sermons and addresses, diaries, legal and financial papers, teaching materials, subject files, and photographs and portraits of Braxton Craven. Correspondents include John Wesley Alspaugh, Charles Force Deems, David Lowry Swain, David Settle Reid, Henry Toole Clark, and Calvin H. Wiley. Brenda Schoonover was the former ambassador to Togo (1998-2000) and the interim ambassador to Belgium (2003-2004). Accession (2009-0259) (1000 items; 2.1 lin. ft.; 1994-2008) consists largely of speech files and other items created by Schoonover during the latter part of her career in the U.S. Foreign Service, including her ambassadorship to Togo, her time as Diplomat-in-Residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her subsequent post as Charge d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Belgium, where she became interim ambassador in 2003. Speech topics range from international diplomacy, the Peace Corps, September 11th, trade, foreign relations, and West Africa development. Breyers Ice Cream Company was founded in 1866 in Philadelphia, Penna.; incorporated in 1908. Became division of National Dairy Products Corporation in 1926. Collection comprises a Bryers Ice Cream salesman's catalog (12 pgs.), for the company's ice cream advertising signs, especially those to be placed outside a store or restaurant. The catalog was probably intended for the company's regional distributors, and includes statistics for ice cream sales in the Philadelphia market. Sign descriptions include a color copy of each sign, along with it's size, finish, weight, and illumination, as well as occasional other information, including such considerations as brackets, embossing, packing units, and store type.

Bridget Booher collection on Sheldon Robert Harte, 1933-1941, 1987-1991 0.25 Linear Feet

In 1990, Bridget Booher began research on Duke alum, Sheldon Robert Harte, for a final paper for her history course. Harte worked as a secretary and security guard for Leon Trotsky. Harte was killed following a raid of the Trotsky compound in 1940. This collection contains Booher's research materials including correspondence from alumni with recollections of Harte, Booher's notes, and copies of Harte's submissions to the literary magazine, The Archive.

British advertising patents collection, 1887-1904 0.6 Linear Feet

The British Patent Office was established in 1852 to analyze, approve, and record patent applications and patent rights. It operated as a division of the Department of Trade and Industry. In 2007 the name changed to the Intellectual Property Office. Collection consists of patent applications received by the British patent office between 1887 and 1904 which appear to have been removed from bound volumes such as "Patents for Inventions." Each application included an attestation from the applicant; a description of the design and function of the innovation; and usually a set of drawings for any mechanisms involved. The bulk of applications originated in Great Britain, but applications were also submitted by American, Australian, Belgian, French, German, and Swedish inventors. Applications address a range of advertising applications (direct mail, newspaper, outdoor, point of sale, postal stationery, retail, matchbooks and other specialty and novelty items, vending machines) that involve innovations relating to display boards and cases; lettering and typography; lighting and projected images; shop window fixtures; and sign construction. Inventors and patent clerks represented in the collection include Alfred Boult; Arnold Fraenkel; Elihu Thomson; Emanuel Spitzer; Frederick Rawson; Frederick Vine; John Frederick Marshall; Levi Yaggy; Richard Henry Brunton; and William Phillips Thompson. Several women inventors are also represented: Allison Bell Lennox; Emily Hand; Florence Chinnery; Josepha Schielle; and Sarah Jane Rollason. Acquired as part of the John W. The British-American Tobacco Company, Ltd., was established in 1902 by an agreement between the Imperial Tobacco Co. of Great Britain and its rivals, the American Tobacco Co. and its associates. These firms divided the world's market for manufactured tobacco products, and British-American took over trade with those territories not reserved to Imperial and American, that is, the export business everywhere outside Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Cuba, and the U. S. and its overseas dependencies. Ownership of British-American was divided between its parent companies, American holding substantially two-thirds of the stock. The headquarters was located in London, England, and the office at 111 5th Ave. in New York City handled the purchase of leaf and manufacturing in the U. S.

The materials comprising the British Correspondence and Miscellany Collection are dated from 1556 to 1972 (bulk 1740-1890). The papers are arranged into the following series: Correspondence, 1556-1972 and undated; Subject Files, 1699-1902 and undated; Pictures, 1795-1921 and undated; and Miscellaneous Material, 1814-1836 and undated An artificial collection, the papers are, for the most part, unrelated by provenance. The collection consists chiefly of correspondence, and topics include numerous political events and activities of the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries in Great Britain and the colonies (particularly India and Africa).

British military photograph album with views of Sri Lanka, Egypt, India, and Istanbul, 1894-1901 0.25 Linear Feet (1 box)

Album contains 51 albumen silver prints taken in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka); Bellary, India; Constantinople (Istanbul), and Egypt. A few images are from Nice, France, and Monte Carlo. The album bears no owner's name, but likely belonged to an individual in the British Army. On the first leaf is pasted a large coat of arms with a motto from the Isle of Man. The Sri Lanka images date from 1894-1895 and include: images from Colombo of military barracks, the hotel Mount Lavinia, Galle Face Green, the British Governor's palace; monsoon waves on a breakwater, polo grounds, and a racetrack; views from the town of Kandy and its lake; images from Trincomalee from an Officers Mess; and race scenes from Nuwara Eliya and Colombo. Views from Egypt show the Great Sphinx, streets in Cairo, and palaces in Alexandria. Images from Constantinople include street scenes, mosques, the port, and the arsenal, while those from India include servants with racehorses, and British men and servants at private residences. There are also images of the hospital ship "Spartan"; portraits of the B and C Companies, 4th Royal Warwickshire Regiment, Dublin, 1902, and the 1st Royal Warwicks in Bellary, India, 1899; a military camp "Marachah," possibly in Afghanistan; and images of military buildings in Sri Lanka. Many of the Sri Lanka images are credited to William H.L. Skeen, a commercial photographer based in Colombo and Kandy; several prints bear his studio's imprint, while others are unattributed but are probably his. The Middle Eastern views are all prints by commercial photographers: the Zangaki brothers (one print), Schroeder & (three prints) and Sebah & Joaillier (five prints). Many of the commercial prints are captioned in the negatives. Prints range in size from 8 3/4 x 11 to 5 3/4 x 8 inches; most are full-page sizes.

British Parliamentary papers on the Ashantee Invasion, 1873-1877 0.6 Linear Feet 20 Items

The Ashantee (also spelled Ashanti) Invasion of Britain's Gold Coast protectorates began in December 1872. British forces responded with their own expedition and invasion of the Ashantee nation in January 1874, resulting in the Battle of Amoaful and the destruction of Kumasi. Materials in this collection consist of bound volumes and printings of reports, dispatches, and correspondence sent to Parliament during the Ashantee (also spelled Ashanti) invasion and the subsequent British expedition into Ashantee lands. Includes initial reports pre-dating the invasion, compilations of correspondence from the commanding officers leading the British forces, transcriptions of communications from the Ashantee king, negotiations regarding the Ashantee surrender, and reports from the Treasury about the cost of the expedition, both monetarily and in terms of British casualties.

Collection consists of print advertisements and print advertising design sketches and renderings, as well as some finished advertisements mounted onto card stock. Also includes some promotional leaflets, manuals and catalogs. Advertisements were produced by an unidentified British agency (or agencies) for markets in Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia and Switzerland; languages represented in advertising copy include English, French and German. Materials cover a wide range of consumer products such as airline travel, automobiles, clothing, cosmetics, food, garden supplies, laundry services, pharmaceutical goods, sewing and knitting supplies, shoes, radios, shoes, toys and watches; as well as industrial products and services including cleaning products, forges and foundries, hydraulic materials, and machines and machine supplies. Companies represented include ALMIN (Associated Light Metal Industries), British European Airways (precursor to British Airways), Fifty Shilling Tailors (Price Tailors Ltd.), Gre Solvent, Grossmith perfumers, James P. Broadway Preview Series records, 1986-1993 3.7 Linear Feet (2250 items)

From 1986-1993, the Broadway Preview Series premiered new works for the American theater at Duke. The first Broadway Preview performance staged in the Reynolds Industries Theater (March 10, 1986) was Emanuel Azenberg's Broadway production of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night, starring Jack Lemmon and Kevin Spacey. Some of the other productions previewed at Duke are: Broadway Bound and Laughter on the 23rd Floor by Neil Simon; A Month of Sundays with Jason Robards; A Walk in the Woods with Sam Waterston; Metamorphosis with Mikhail Baryshnikov; The Circle with Rex Harrison; Artist Descending a Staircase by Tom Stoppard; and Lucifer's Child with Julie Harris. The work of the Broadway Preview Series is continued today by Theater Previews at Duke. Collection contains programs, clippings, photographs, some autograph notes, and other materials pertaining to productions. Also includes scripts. The material ranges in date from 1986-1993.

Brown-Buie Family Papers, 1770s-2016 2 Linear Feet

The Brown and Buie Families were Scottish Presbyterians who settled in Philadelphus, Robeson County, N.C. Some branches of the family also lived in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. Members of the family were Presbyterian ministers, farmers, and storeowners; the family also enslaved African Americans and farmed land seized from expelled Cherokee and other native peoples. This collection contains deeds and records of land and property ownership by different members and branches of the Brown and Buie families; correspondence about different family members' travels, health, business, and work, including preaching and ministry; receipts, estate documents, wills, and financial records; sermons and church membership lists; some lists of enslaved people and their children's birth records; and a letter from an unidentified enslaved person to "Master John" complaining about how John preached with his back toward the slaves trying to hear the sermon.

Includes 1912 letter to author Margaret Pollock Sherwood in which Bruce Barton, then Managing Editor of The Housekeeper magazine, praises Sherwood's work and asks if she would consider submitting stories to the magazine. Circa 1915 reprint of tract "The Creator of a Correspondence Church" written by Barton and published in Associated Sunday Magazines; Letter, 1949 to journalist Julien Elfenbein in which Barton mentions the potential power of the Sears catalog as a pro-American propaganda tool in Russia. Bruce Davidson photographs, 1955-2008 6 Linear Feet (4 boxes)

Bruce Davidson (b. 1933) is an American-born photographer, and a member of the Magnum Photo cooperative agency. Collection consists of 229 photographic prints, mostly black-and-white, with color work present in several series. Subjects range widely, with a focus on human interactions, minority and disenfranchised communities, urban street photography, and landscapes influenced by human activity. Locations include Chicago; Paris; England, Wales, and Scotland; Sicily and Venice; Los Angeles and the California Pacific Coast Highway; and New York City, including East Harlem, Central Park, the subway, and other locations. Also included is a large series of portraits chiefly of celebrities, and images deriving from commercial assignments. Several portraits of African Americans from Mississippi, South Carolina, and New York City were taken in 1962 while Davidson was documenting civil rights actions. Other short series feature nude female studies, French fashion shows, and scenes from the film production of Zabriskie Point by Antonioni. Sizes range from approximately 6x9 to 20x24 inches. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Bruce Nicklas papers, 1891-1996 0.75 Linear Feet

Bruce Nicklas is the Arthur S. Pearse Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology. Nicklas spent a large majority of his professional career at Duke, starting as an associate professor of Biology in 1965, and later served as chairman of the department of Biology from 1983-1986. With his research focusing on cell biology and chromosomes, he has received National Institute of Health grants to serve as a principal investigator of the Analysis and Control of Chromosome Movement. This collection consists of article reprints, including an article by German biology Walther Flemming, photographs, and VHS tapes of presentations, including a presentation of his 1995 E.B. Wilson Award.
