Asheville, N.C. residents. Two prominent members of the families were George William McCoy, Sr. (b. 1901), editor of the Asheville-Citizen Times, and his father-in-law, Harry Weaver Love (b. 1883), YMCA executive. The collection contains personal and business correspondence, genealogical material, financial and legal records, printed material, clippings, addresses and writings, scrapbooks, miscellaneous items, photographs, and a number of volumes. Topics include the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Assoc. Harry Love's business papers include a large number of correspondence, reports, pictures and volumes relating to his work with the YMCA, in the U.S. and abroad; there are a great many items relating to the Philippine Islands. There are a sizable number of papers from Wythe Munford Peyton, a civil and highway engineer, who worked for several N.C. railroads; the papers of William C. Coleman, a businessman who sold and serviced Harley-Davidson motorcycles (1914-1915); and papers of the Frelinghuysen-Southwick family of N.J. and N.Y., one relative being a Senator and another, Emeline Sherman Smith, a poet. There are a few items concerning Thomas Dixon who founded the Mt. Mitchell Assoc. of Arts and Sciences.

Carson McCullers (1917-1967) was an author, born in Muscogee County, Ga., as Lula Carson Smith. Her husband was Reeves McCullers. Her works included The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1940) and The Member of the Wedding (1946). Collection consists of correspondence between McCullers and Tennessee Williams, Dame Edith Sitwell, and cousins, Jordan Massee, Jr., and Paul Bigelow; writings by McCullers; poems by Dame Edith Sitwell; and clippings; together with correspondence from McCullers' mother, Marguerite (Waters) Smith, to Massee and Bigelow, and other papers. Topics include the relationship between McCullers and Williams and their lifestyles, health, moods, travels, residences, and attitudes toward well-known contemporary writers, and McCullers' relationship with her husband, Reeves.

Collection consists primarily of Raven Ioor McDavid's writings and other materials. Writings include his reviews and a large number of his articles, bibliographies, and speeches. Other items include correspondence (one letter from Jay B. Hubbell and its reply); documentation of the work of the Linguistic Society of America's Technical Committee on Language and Cognitive Development; parts of "The Mirth of a Nation: America's Great Dialect Humor," edited by McDavid; a post-revolution (around 1810?) Haitian tax merchandise inventory for confectioner Bernard Rambier, written in French; and McDavid's obituary.

Born in 1835 in area of Virginia that is now West Virginia; Confederate officer during the U.S. Civil War, and U.S. Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries from 1879-1895. The collection concerns early history of the fur trade and the French-Indian War; events during the Civil War, including McDonald's position as ordnance officer at Vicksburg, Miss. for the Departments of Mississippi and Eastern Louisiana; his appointment in 1879 as Fisheries Commissioner; the organization and work of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and to a lesser extent the Sons of the American Revolution. The Civil War papers are particularly substantive, giving details on the Vicksburg Campaign, the role of African Americans in the war, and topics such as supplies, movement of troops, and other logistics. Letters from the 1820s written by his grandfather, A. W. McDonald, a colonel in the French and Indian War, touch on the fur trade and related topics; and early letters of the Reverend Robert T. Berry and the Griggs family, of Virginia, contribute to the genealogy of those families. Marshall's correspondents include Virginia politicians and U.S. scientists. Includes correspondence of McDonald's wife, Mary Eliza McCormick McDonald, who served as a leader in the DAR.

Richard E. McDonald (1923-2011) was an advertising executive and consultant who specialized in healthcare issues, based in Wisconsin. Collection consists of five VHS videocassettes and an audiocassette of television and radio commercials for a variety of hospitals, medical centers, and trauma centers primarily in the U.S. midwestern states, collected by McDonald during his career in media communications. Institutions represented include Bayfront Medical Center, Bronson Methodist Hospital, Indiana University Medical Center, Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Rockford Memorial Hospital, St. Francis Medical Center, and Touro Infirmary. Topics addressed in the commercials include: drunk driving; heart disease; mental health; obstetrics and maternal health services; preventive health care; sports-related injuries and medical care; substance abuse treatment; and trauma care. Richard Edmund McDonald (1923-2011) was an advertising executive and consultant who specialized in healthcare issues, based in Wisconsin. Collection consists of 8 VHS videocassettes and two audiocassettes of political campaign advertisements, campaign speeches, and testimonial endorsements for candidates for U.S. presidential and Wisconsin statewide elections, collected by McDonald during his career in media communications. Candidates and speakers include Barry Goldwater, George H.W. Bush, Jerris Leonard, Raymond Massey, Richard Nixon, Warren Knowles, and William Steiger. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Angus McDougall taught sculpture in Durham, N.C. and made numerous sculptural renderings of Duke University professors, students, and affiliates, as well as other major figures including Helen Keller and Frederick Douglas. His scrapbook contains photographs of his sculptures and his human subjects, family photos, clippings, a book jacket and correspondence.

William McDougall (1871-1938), an early twentieth century psychologist, taught at Duke University from 1927 to 1938. McDougall espoused a hormic theory of psychology, emphasizing genetics and instinct over nurture. McDougall was also a strong proponent of parapsychology. The William McDougall Papers, 1892-1982, includes correspondence, writing, research, teaching materials, clippings, notebooks, photographs, diaries, drawings, and tributes. Most of the materials date from the time of McDougall's tenure at Duke University. Major subjects include Lamarckian experiments conducted by McDougall, the McDougall family (and sons Kenneth and Angus in particular), the study of parapsychology, the Parapsychology Laboratory at Duke University, the Psychology Department at Duke University, and anthropological studies in Borneo and the Torres Strait. A hand-made photograph album by US Army Chaplain Morris C. McEldowney, dated 1954-1955. The album contains 190 photographs laid down on 172 stiff cardboard sheets, 7.5 x 4 inches, plus 6 small Japanese color woodblock views laid down on three more pages. The candid snapshots, with handwritten captions, are primarily of Seoul, Korea, the 8th Army military base, and the surrounding area. It also contains photograhs of Pusa, Korea, Tokyo, and Sendai, Japan.
