New Day Films is a filmmaker-run cooperative founded in 1971. Film topics range widely and include women's history and culture; multiculturalism and diversity; social and political history; gender and socialization; media, culture; the environment; mental health; parenting and family; and global concerns. The New Day Films Digital Films collection consists of digitized and digitally-born films distributed by the company since its inception. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection comprises a photograph album in two sections, containing a total of 261 black-and-white prints that feature the athletic and social activities of young female campers. The photographs were taken by an unidentified teenage girl. The first section of the album comprises 51 photographs (with captions) taken during the summer of 1916, twenty-six of them at Camp Mascoma, in Enfield, N.H., including shots of the Shaker Bridge and scenes of campers canoeing and swimming, among other activities. There are also 8 photos taken at Lost River, near North Woodstock, N.H.; 6 photos of girls with other family members at Wollaston Beach in Quincy, Mass.; and 11 photos of Boston's Franklin Park, a children's May Party, and other activities. The second section of the album contains 210 photographs (of which only 35 have captions and 10 are loose) taken during the summer of 1917 at Camp Teconnet on China Lake in China, Me. These photographs picture campers swimming, canoeing, playing basketball, doing calisthenics, posing singly and in small groups, etc. There are also many photographs of campers dressed in elaborate costumes (of dowagers, gypsies, clowns, Native Americans, etc.), including several featuring campers in male attire, impersonating Charlie Chaplin, WWI soldiers, playboys, waiters, etc.

Collection contains a scrapbook for the 1913 Suffrage Pilgrimage, describing the route from Birkenhead to London. This is accompanied by 78-page narrative of the trip, which is keyed to the photographs in the scrapbook. Also included are two other drafts of the narrative, "A few impressions" (14 pages) and "The Suffrage Pilgrimage, July 1913" (88 pages). The scrapbook and narratives were possibly prepared by Alice Margery New. Her "Suffrage Quotation Book" that contains signatures of suffragists, including those of Constance Lytton and Emmeline Pankhurst, is also present. In addition, there is another unidentified participant's description (31 pages) of the Birkenhead to London pilgrimage, perhaps written by Alice's mother or aunt. There are five postcards related to the pilgrimage, along with a black-and-white photograph of F. W. Pathick Lawrence, who was imprisoned for his association with militant suffrage demonstrations. Finally, the collection contains an autograph book (1858-1931) containing primarily letters directed to William Newmarch, but with a few Dalby and New family items.

Newman Ivey White was an educator and Percy Bysshe Shelley scholar. He served as Professor of English at Trinity College and Duke University from 1919 to 1948. The papers include correspondence, lectures, research materials, including notecards, copies of letters, manuscripts, and photographs along with printed matter, miscellaneous writings, and other papers, with bulk dates of 1936-1948. Most of the material reflects his work on Shelley and the English Romantic poets; a small amount of reprints and lectures concerns folklore. Much of the correspondence is between White and other scholars of the English poets; correspondents include T. J. Wise, Frederick L. Jones, and George L. Kittredge. H.L. Mencken and George Bernard Shaw wrote to congratulate White on his publications. Several folders of correspondence with members of the publishing firm of Alfred A. Knopf regard the publication of Shelley in 1940. A letter from Duke faculty member Calvin B. Hoover describes Nazi Germany in 1932, and several of White's European correspondents comment on conditions in Europe during World War II. English.

In 1968, Doris Duke established the Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF) with the express purpose of preserving, interpreting, and maintaining landscape and objects reflecting the 18th- and 19th-century architectural culture of Aquidneck Island (Newport, R.I.). In creating the foundation, Doris Duke had a simple plan: to purchase dilapidated 18th century homes and meticulously restore them so that every detail was as historically accurate as possible. During the next three decades, preservation remained a major focus among her many charitable endeavors. Saving eighty-three properties was an undertaking on a scale and scope that has never been repeated. Doris Duke gave $21.9 million to the Newport Restoration Foundation, the largest philanthropic gift she made to a single organization during her lifetime. The collection documents the daily business activities of the Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF), including purchases, renovations, and renting of various NRF homes, photo inventories of the furniture and other household items at each restored NRF home, weekly progress reports, and other routine matters. The architectural records in this collection are related to the renovation of several of the NRF homes. The materials in this collection are arranged chronologically and alphabetically thereunder.

The Office of News and Communications served as the hub for Duke University's news, media relations, and marketing. It worked with the news media and others to highlight Duke's faculty, students, and staff's activities locally and worldwide. This collection contains media guides related to presidential inaugurations, reports, strategic plans, ephemera, publications, Duke Daily messages, and digital photographs containing images of the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue from the Duke Chapel.

The Nazi Nuremberg Rally Newsreel, 1933, consists of one black-and-white, silent, 31-minute Agfa newsreel print documenting the Fifth Party Congress of the Nazi Party, Nuremberg, August 30-September 3, 1933.

The New York Radical Feminists (NYRF) was a radical feminist group founded by Shulamith Firestone and Anne Koedt in 1969. Collection contains organizing and theory documents as well as photographs from the New York Radical Feminists, as well as groups associated in some way with the NYRF or NYRF members dating from 1969-2011.

Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen (1906-1994) was a professor emeritus of economics at Vanderbilt University. This collection primarily documents his professonal life through his correspondence, writings, research, and professional and faculty activities.

The Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions was founded in 2005 and merged with the Duke University Energy Initiative to form the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability in 2022. The institute worked to improve global environmental policies through research, engagement with policymakers, and highlighting critical environmental issues. This collection consists of records of staff meetings, board meetings, committees, reports, and educational materials related to climate action, water usage, and water policy in North Carolina.

As of 2005, the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University offers two master's degree programs: Master of Environmental Management (MEM) and Master of Forestry (MF). Both degree programs require students complete a master's project that presents an in-depth or quantitative analysis of a problem related to the students' particular focus area. Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment traces its beginnings to the founding of the Duke School of Forestry in 1938. In the 1990s two other entities, the Duke Marine Laboratory and the Duke Department of Geology, were combined with Forestry to form the Nicholas School. The Records of Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, 1916-ongoing, contain materials created from the school's inception as the Duke School of Forestry (1938) through all its subsequent names: the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, the School of the Environment, and the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences. The collection also includes material about the history of Duke Forest and its use as a teaching and research facility. The earliest materials comprise the papers of Clarence F. Korstian, first director of the Forest and first dean of the School, including his correspondence, early reports about the Forest and the School, and his involvement in the Ecological Society of America, the North Carolina Forestry Association, and the International Union of Forest Research Organizations. The bulk of the collection consists of the School's general administrative records, including annual reports, admissions records, enrollment statistics, information on degrees granted, faculty history and meetings, and surveys and meetings of the School's alumni. Visual materials include posters, color and black-and-white photographs, negatives, slides, and digital photographs that document the School of Forestry and the Duke Marine Laboratory.

The Nicholas School of the Environment's Senior Professional Program traces its beginnings to 1979, when the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies first offered a program of short intensive courses. These courses have been offered since then as part of various named programs and centers, including the Intensive Course Program, the Continuing Education Program, and the Center for Environmental Education. As of 2013, the Senior Professional Program is the only one of these terms that remains in use as a formally named entity in the Nicholas School. The Nicholas School of the Environment's Senior Professional Program Records span the years 1977-1997 and contain correspondence with faculty, syllabi, notebooks, schedules, and other materials from intensive courses, workshops, and conferences offered as part of the Intensive Course Program, the Center for Continuing Education, the Center for Environmental Education, and the Senior Professional Program. Nick Meglin (July 30, 1935–June 2, 2018) was a humorist, writer, illustrator, and editor at MAD Magazine. The collection includes material from Meglin's decades-long tenure at MAD Magazine, as well as Meglin's sketches and illustrations, essays and articles, song lyrics, books, musicals, comics, greeting card ideas, materials from television appearances, photoshoots, and correspondence with a range of prominent figures.

Joseph DiBona is a cookbook collector and Associate Professor Emeritus in the Program in Education at Duke University. The collection is named in honor of his daughter Nicole DiBona Peterson. Collection spans the years 1851-2005 and includes cookbooks, hang tags, inserts, recipe cards and guides, operating instructions, owner's manuals and other promotional materials that address cooking and kitchen arts. Materials include recipes, guides, and information that educate consumers and promote the use of a variety of foods (meat; fish and poultry; dairy; soups; fruits and vegetables; beverages); condiments and spices (sauces, bouillon and broths, chocolate and cocoa, baking soda and baking powder); canning jars; small appliances (cookware, blenders, mixers, microwave ovens); and large appliances (stoves and refrigerators). Collection materials frequently promote the use of a particular brand or product, and they occasionally promote institutions or trade organizations. Acquired as part of the John W. Arbabi is an artist, DJ, writer, filmmaker, and zinester from Durham, NC and Austin, TX. She is the author of several craft and activist zines, including Radical South, Chicks Rock, and Polaroid-Celluloid. The collection consists of 34 zines (27 titles, produced between 1999 and 2007) collected by Arbabi. Eight of the zine titles in the collection were written or co-written by Arbabi. The majority of zines in the collection focus on either craftmaking and the do-it-yourself lifestyle or women's personal stories, including stories of abuse. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Chiefly family correspondence, including that of Miss Mitchell, of Flushing, N.Y., and Shepherdstown, W. Va., relating to her relief work in Europe during and after World War I. Topics include U. S. Army camps, British Expeditionary Forces hospitals and nurses in France, refugees in Italy, various organizations for wounded soldiers, such as Le Phare de France, and the role women played in relief work. Some letters after World War I relate to continued European relief work and the Food for France Fund. Other correspondence includes that of John Fulton Berrien Mitchell, Sr., an officer in the 2nd New York Volunteer Cavalry, 1862-1864, concerning ordnance and camp and garrison equipage.

This collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research. Contains materials pertaining to the controversy surrounding Duke University President Terry Sanford's proposal to locate the presidential library of Richard Nixon (Duke Law '37) at Duke University. Nora Chaffin was on the history faculty at Duke University from 1935-1944. Her collection contains correspondence, clippings, typescripts, reviews, records, and other materials. Among the papers are review of her book Trinity College and a record book of an unidentified YMCA. The collection ranges in date from 1835-1981.

Norine Shipley Norris attended Southern Female College (also known as Cox College) in 1897-1899, and taught Sunday school in Atlanta at Kirkwood Baptist Church in the early 1900s. This collection (2009-0129) (200 items; 1.8 lin. ft.; dated 1890s-2000) includes a variety of materials from Norine Shipley Norris, in particular her school notebooks, correspondence, and catalogs from the Southern Female College, which she attended for at least two years. Of note is the correspondence from Earnest Sevier Cox, a white supremist who courted Shipley for a time (1905-1906); photographs and records from her years of teaching at Kirkwood Baptist Church (1901-1904); and her handwritten application to the Daughters of the American Revolution (1918). Also included are a number of photographs and tintypes, scrapbooks, several books of poetry and literature, and miscellaneous clippings and ephemera.

Norman Hutchings entered the Royal Navy in 1941 and received his training on board H.M.S. Collinwood. He then served as a signalman on board the destroyer, H.M.S. Faulknor, which was involved in the Battle of the Atlantic against German submarines that preyed on British merchant ships. In 1943, Hutchings posted to the naval headquarters at Fort St. Angelo on Malta. The papers of British-born Norman A. Hutchings span the years 1939-1946, and document Hutchings' experiences during World War II serving aboard several ships in the British Royal Navy. Norman Hutchings entered the Navy in 1941 and received his training on board H.M.S. Collinwood. He then served as a signalman on board the destroyer, H.M.S. Faulknor, which was involved in the Battle of the Atlantic against German submarines that preyed on British merchant ships. In 1943, Hutchings posted to the naval headquarters at Fort St. Angelo on Malta. The collection consists of 488 items gathered by Hutchings during his World War II experience, and include correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, photographs, theater programs and ticket stubs, and other personal notes and ephemera. The materials are arranged in groups by format: Clippings, Correspondence, Diaries, Ephemera, Naval Messages, and Photographs.

Newspaper clippings and letters (LS). Bethune worked in China in the late 1930's and the clippings document renewed interest in Bethune in early 1970's as relations improved between China and the West. Correspondence consists of inquiries regarding Bethune from R.J. Stewart to J.L. Wilson.

Dr. Norman Guttman taught in the Department of Psychology from 1951 until his death in 1984. The collection contains correspondence from 1952-1982.

Norman Underwood was the contractor in charge of the construction of the Trinity College Library. The collection consists of receipts and bills made out to Norman Underwood for materials and labor related to the construction of the library on East Campus. There is also some very limited correspondence regarding these bills and receipts, as well as a contract for materials. The majority of the companies and individuals named in the receipts were located in Durham, and included contractors, suppliers, hardware and supply stores, pharmacies, and rail companies; several companies and individuals were located outside Durham, including Raleigh, Goldsboro, Chattanooga, TN, and Atlanta, GA. The receipts and bills detail materials, prices, contractors, and business names used in the construction of the library.

Author, translator, and teacher Norman Waddell was born in Washington, D.C. in 1940, and he moved to Japan in 1965. He is an emeritus professor at Otani University in Kyoto, from which he received the degree of Doctor of Literature (LittD) and where he taught for more than thirty years. He has translated works by notable Zen figures such as Suzuki D.T. (Daisetz Teitarō), Dōgen Kigen, Bankei Yōtaku, and Hakuin Ekaku. Waddell's papers include correspondence from: Zen teacher Robert Aitken, who was a co-founder of the Diamond Sangha in Honolulu; artist Frederick Franck; and scholar and translator Burton Watson.

Norma Taylor Mitchell was an American History professor at Troy University in Alabama and a lay leader in the United Methodist Church. These materials document her research and teaching career, as well as her church leadership.

The North Carolina Association of Jewish Women (NCAJW) was founded by Sarah Weil in 1921 with the intent “to deepen the religious life, to stimulate interest and Jewish affairs, and to increase Jewish community activity.” The organization’s projects included administration of a scholarship fund, sponsorship of the NCA of Jewish Youth (founded in 1946), and help towards purchasing books of Jewish interest for the libraries of North Carolina. The materials in this collection primarily document the daily business activities of the NCAJW and include programs and reports from annual conventions and meetings, membership, correspondence to and from Yetta Leder (President and Membership Chair of the NCAJW), financial records such as balance sheets, budgets, and annual contributions, year books, and reports, correspondence, and photographs related to the organization’s various projects.

The North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys (NCAWA) was founded in 1978 to support women legal professionals and women's legal rights. Accession (2009-0209) (11.6 lin. ft.; 7100 items; dated 1978-2009) includes administrative and organizational records from the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys. Materials include membership directories, conference binders, surveys and other research about women in the profession, videotapes from annual conferences, committee and task force files, meeting minutes, articles of incorporation, photographs from events, and other related materials. Accession (2011-1018) (1.0 lin. ft.; 1000 items; dated 1998-2011) includes additional administrative and organizational records from the NCAWA. Materials include newsletters, membership directories, conference notebooks, continuing legal education (CLE) presentations, photographs, correspondence, and periodicals about legal matters. The North Carolina Lesbian and Gay Health Project was founded in 1982. The records in this collection contain administrative files, case files, board minutes, and newsletters that document the organization, staffing, and activities of the NCLGHP. Subject files provide general information about gay and lesbian health issues, such as AIDS, breast cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, mental health, and substance abuse. Includes some artifacts and ephemeral materials such as T-shirts, pamphlets, and fliers.

The North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company was founded in Durham, N.C. in 1897, and was dissolved in 2022. Its archives document the company's founding and development, and contribute to the historic record on African American businesses and entrepreneurship in the South and in the United States. Dating from 1850 to 2008, the material covers nearly every aspect of N.C. Mutual's operations, management, and milestones. Includes corporate office files, including the records of five company presidents; annual statements; reports; surveys; memos; legal and financial papers; original life insurance policies; training material; programs; ephemera and artifacts; and a large number of historical photographs of male and female staff and their families, offices, buildings, and Durham scenes dating back to the late 1890s. Significant businessmen represented in the papers include founders John Merrick and Aaron Moore; and presidents Bert Collins, Joseph Goodloe, William Kennedy Jr., William Kennedy, III, Charles C. Spaulding, Asa T. Spaulding, and current president James H. Speed. Throughout there are numerous images and narratives about the many women workers and administrative staff who held positions at the company dating back to the turn of the 20th century. The collection is especially rich in print material, including many issues of three company publications: The Mutual (1903-1929), The Whetstone (1924-1998), and The Weekly Review (1925-1998). It is also notable for its assemblage of material on United States African American history, including much information on other companies, and public relations material dating from the earliest years to present times, including advertising ephemera, advertising campaigns, and other related items. Other materials document North Carolina Mutual's outreach to the African American community throughout its history to counter racism, unemployment, and diseases by means of public health programs, church affiliations, mentoring, and scholarship programs. The North Carolina Self-Portrait Photography Collection includes copy negatives, contact sheets, prints, information sheets, agreements, and voice recordings created as part of the North Carolina Self-Portrait Project, undertaken to build an archive of images and other materials documenting the experiences of African American families in the South. The photographs were assembled by requesting copy photographs from African American families primarily in North Carolina, but a few locations in Mississippi were also included. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The North Carolina Student Legislature, the oldest active student legislature in the United States, was established in 1937. Contains the records of the Duke University chapter of the North Carolina Student Legislature, a student organization that presented legislation for possible enactment by the North Carolina General Assembly.

The first Student Rural Health Coalition began at Vanderbilt University in 1968. In 1978, the Lyndhurst Foundation began funding similar work in North Carolina with the goal of improving the health conditions of eastern North Carolina, the state's most impoverished and medically underserved region. Collection contains records pertaining to the operations and activities of the Duke University Chapter of the North Carolina Student Rural Health Coalition with the inclusive dates 1988-2001. Material includes correspondence and memoranda, material relating to internships and cooperative programs with North Carolina Central University, staff work plans and evaluations, reports and surveys, and various printed material.

The North Carolina Temple and Synagogue Historical Collection is an artificial collection created from materials donated to the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina that are from or related to Jewish congregations across North Carolina. There are administrative records for some of the temples and synagogues represented, including Temple Beth El (Weldon, Halifax Co., NC), Temple Israel (Kinston, Lenoir Co., NC), Temple Beth El (Lumberton, Robeson Co., NC), and Temple Oheb Sholom (Goldsboro, Wayne Co., NC), of which Gertrude Weil was a member. Also present are materials related to Rabbi Jerome G. Tolochko's service as chaplain to Marine Corps bases in North Carolina during and after World War II. Central themes include congregational and community events, building dedications, anniversaries, religious services, membership, religious education, and Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and Hadassah activities. Types of material include correspondence, bulletins, programs, organizational scrapbooks, directories, teaching materials, financial ledgers, clippings, and photographs.

North Carolinians Against Racist and Religious Violence (NCARRV) was an activist group based in Durham, NC from 1983-1997 that worked to document hate crimes and hate groups including white supremacists, assist victims, raise awareness, and influence public policy across the state, and these records document their work. Collection includes founding documents, bylaws, meeting files, board meeting documents, photographs, audiovisual materials, administrative materials, grants and grant applications, incident reports, publications, subject and extensive newspaper clippings on racist violence and white supremacy movements in North Carolina.

The Northern Railroad was a U.S. railroad located in central New Hampshire. Collection contains stock certificates, payrolls, powers of attorney, bills of lading, papers of other railroads (especially of the Passumpsic and Northern New Hampshire Railroads), accounts, receipts, reports of merchandise, and a volume of letters from various railroad companies.

Account of life in camp and traveling while stationed in North India and modern-day Pakistan by an unidentified wife of a British Army officer. The first entry begins in Meean Meer (or Mian Mir), a former large British cantonment in Pakistan. Officers and families traveled to locations including Islamabad, Kashmir, Aliabad, and Pindi Gheb. Illustrated with sketches.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) is a feminist activist organization founded in 1966. Collection comprises one product order form on newsprint, offering feminist and activist-themed items (books, buttons, t-shirts, jewelry, stickers, etc.) available for sale from the National Organization for Women office in Washington, D.C.

The Noyes and Balch families resided primarily in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Collection comprises correspondence, including 136 letters (603 pages); 3 diaries; a photograph album and loose photographs, as well as a wooden box in which the family stored letters from Catharine Porter Noyes. The collection centers around Catharine, who detailed her experiences while teaching newly freed slaves at plantations on the Sea Islands of South Carolina, from 1863-1864 and 1869-1870. There are also family letters written to Catharine, 1860-1892, especially from her sister, Ellen (Nellie); Ellen's husband, F. V. “Frank” Balch; and her cousin, Mary, who taught with Ellen in South Carolina, among others family members. Another set of letters were written by Ellen to Frank while he served as secretary to U. S. Senator and abolitionist Charles Sumner (R-Ma) in 1864 in Washington, D.C.; and by artist Emily E. Balch to Richard Noyes Stone. The collection also contains a diary maintained by a 12-year-old girl, probably Ravella Balch, and there are two diaries maintained by Emily E. Balch in 1929. There is a photograph album containing 32 black-and-white photographs of Noyes and Balch family members, as well as family friends. There are also loose black-and-white photographs, dated 1877-1957. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture, and as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

The NSF/CEME Decentralization Conference seminars are funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and administered through the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). This collection includes materials relating to the planning and programming of the Decentralization Conferences during Roy Radner's tenure as coordinator.

Family from Ray's Hill, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Papers of John Nycum and John Q. Nycum include the letters of Philip Weisel concerning family matters and the sale of mineral water, and the correspondence and papers of several members of the Nycum family concerning the management of general merchandise businesses; business conditions; family matters; and the Civil War, including descriptions of camp life in Pennsylvania and Louisiana and the Confederate raid on Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, 1864. The collection also contains bills, receipts, legal papers, and miscellaneous items, including advertisements, circulars, political material, and reports, 1850-1856, of several teachers in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, listing pupils and their records. Volumes include mercantile daybooks and memorandum books of John Nycum, Simon Nycum, and Philip Weisel; record books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ray's Hill, Pennsylvania; account books of public schools of Bedford County; and a mercantile ledger of D. Eshleman and Company.

Odessa Massey was an undergraduate student at Trinity College (Duke University) from 1924 to 1928. The topics of her scrapbook include social and academic life at Duke, women at Duke, dormitory housing, the Woman's College and the Y.W.C.A. The scrapbooks range in date from 1924-1929.

The Equal Opportunity Office was created in 1972 by Chancellor John S. Blackburn to ensure University compliance with equal opportunity and affirmative action legislation. Collection contains material pertaining to the Office for Institutional Equity including Duke University's Affirmative Action plans, and promotional material as well as planning and committee material for the annual Martin Luther King Day Commemoration. Materials in the collection range in date from 1962-ongoing.

The Office of Black Church Studies (initially the Office of Black Church Affairs) was created as an initiative of the Duke Divinity School in 1972 to support African American students and faculty. The collection consists of materials related to African American churches, civil rights, and the status of African American students and faculty in universities across the country. Materials related to Martin Luther King, Jr.; Benjamin Chavis; Gardner C. Taylor; and Prathia Hall Wynn are included. The collection also contains manuscripts, black-and-white and color photographs, digital images, and electronic records contained on compact discs.

Contains the records of the Office of Career Development and Continuing Education at Duke University, established in 1972 to assist undergraduates and non-degree students in preparing for careers. The Office worked closely with the Placement Services Office, the Counseling Center, and the academic deans of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. Also contains the records of the Directions for Educated Women Committee (formerly known as the Educated WomanPower Committee), established in 1966. The student and faculty Directions for Educated Women Committee organized programs to introduce career options and role models of successful career women to female undergraduates. Contains the records of the Office of Continuing Studies, established in 1969 as the Office of Continuing Education at Duke University. The Office provides year-round training, short courses, certificate programs, and credit courses for students and non-students wishing to further their education or prepare for standardized tests. In 1992, the Office of Continuing Education merged with the Summer Session office to create the Office of Continuing Education and Summer Session. The Duke University Office of Cultural Affairs was created in 1969 as part of the Division of Student Affairs and existed until 1993, when, as part of a reorganization of the Division, it was superceded by the Office of University Life. The Office of Cultural Affairs Records, 1931-2002 (bulk 1958-2002), consist of budgets and financial reports; calendars; contracts; correspondence; meeting minutes; printed materials; black-and-white, color, and 35mm photographs; and videocassettes, audiocassettes, and digital audio tapes. Materials primarily span the years of the OCA's official existence, 1969-1993, but also contain earlier materials about its first director, Ella Fountain Pratt, and later records created by the Office of University Life. Arranged in five series: Subject Files, which provide a broad overview of the OCA's activities, including early correspondence between Duke University and the American Dance Festival, which moved to Duke in 1977; the Chamber Arts Society, a group that promoted chamber music performance in Durham and surrounding areas; the Duke Artists Series, a concert series that began in 1930 and came under the oversight of OCA upon its creation in 1969; the Summer Session, programming for which also became one of the OCA's primary responsibilities; and the Triangle Dance Guild, a group independent of Duke that coordinated with the OCA to promote dance performance on campus and in Durham and surrounding areas from 1976-1984.

The Office of Durham and Community Affairs (DCA) was established to build partnerships and develop programs that support affordable housing and health, community development, food security, and public education in Durham, North Carolina. DCA connects Durham and community members to resources at Duke University and Duke Health. Materials in the collection consist of records about programs and projects. The Duke University Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life serves as a liaison between the university administration and student Greek, fraternity, sorority, and selective living groups. The Office of Government Relations is charged with representing the University in Washington, D.C. The office serves to address and monitor legislative issues of interest to the university and its community. This collection contains the records of the Office of Government Relations spanning the years 1965 to 2015. Major topics include legislation, lobbying, National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), and the Association of American Universities (AAU).

The position of Personnel Director has existed at Duke since 1949. In 1980 the division of Human Resources was created to oversee all aspects of employee affairs and relations. The collection contains memoranda, policy statements, wage and salary information, pay range documentation, and various other materials relating to employee relations and personnel management at Duke University.

The Office of Human Resources Reference Collection contains files of memoranda, personnel policy notices, employee handbooks and newsletters, policy manuals, news clippings, literature on training opportunities, and other materials concerning the personnel management functions of the University. Materials date from the early 1950s through the 1990s. Major subjects include benefits, wages and salaries, upward mobility programs and training, services for employees, employee awards and appreciation events, and personnel policies and work rules. This collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research.

The Office of Institutional Advancement was created in 1961 to organize public and alumni relations, fund raising, and long-range planning and development at Duke University. The collection features addresses by E. H. Hopkins, the first Vice President for Institutional Advancement; reference files concerning the administration and history of the Office of Institutional Advancement; reports and studies focusing on fundraising and development of Duke University; and the Office's subject files. Major subjects include planned giving, the Fifth Decade campaign, and corporate support. In 1981, the Office of Institutional Advancement was eliminated and its duties largely assumed by the Office of University Development. English.

The Office of Licensing and Ventures serves Duke University and its Medical Center and is responsible for commercially-sponsored research, patents and licenses, new venture activity, corporate gifts, and corporate vending relationships. Contains the case files, correspondence, and records of medical, chemical, and engineering patents submitted by Duke University personnel from 1957 to 1988.

Since its inception in 1969, the Office of Minority Affairs (formerly known as the Office of Black Affairs and currently the Office of Intercultural Affairs) has primarily addressed the needs of the African American student population at Duke University, providing an organizational structure through which Black participation in the University and local communities can obtain the greatest degree of effectiveness. The collection contains a variety of administrative materials, including reports, correspondence, minutes and programs, documenting the directives and activities of the Office of Minority Affairs. Also included are materials pertaining to the Summer Transitional Program, which was established in 1969 and managed by the Office of Minority Affairs.

The Office of New Student Programs provides programs and resources to new student populations at Duke University. Collection includes files relating to the First-Year Advisory Counselor (FAC) program.

The University Landscape Architect is a position in the Office of Planning and Design, and it oversees the design of all new and restored landscapes on campus. Collection includes studies, proposals, action plans, and guidelines related to the landscape and hardscape of Duke's campus. Materials evaluate the conditions of campus landscape and hardscape, address the feasibility of making changes, propose changes and improvements to be made, and chart courses of action to implement changes. Also included are meeting minutes and notes from the Master Plan Oversight Committee.

The Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations Reference Collection contains files of memoranda, clippings, publications, and reports relating to the Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations and its predecessors. This collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research.

Duke University's Office of Publications centralized the task of producing printed materials for campus offices, schools, and other groups. The collection contains correspondence and drafts related to the production of two promotional university booklets: a proposed update to “A Short History (of Duke),” and “Duke Encounters,” a collection of reminiscences about Duke University that was published in 1977. Both booklets were produced under Dr. Elizabeth H. (Betsy) Locke, Editor of the Office of Publications. The collection also contains pamphlets, letterhead, brochures, magazines, cards, booklets, and other types of printed materials produced by the Office of Publications for various campus organizations and academic departments. This collection contains numerous variations of official Duke insignia, emblems, letterhead, and other graphics.

The Office of Residential Life has long been committed to creating an active and meaningful residential life for its students. As such, it has continuously worked to review and improve the quality of residential life at Duke University. Materials in the collection include administrative records, correspondence, meeting minutes, financial and statistical reports, memoranda, proposals, newsletters, handbooks, color slides, computer diskettes, reel-to-reel audio recordings, survey results and other materials documenting the activities of the Office of Residential Life.

The Office of Special Events and University Ceremonies was formed in 1983 to handle the planning of campus-wide events. The Office of Special Events and University Ceremonies records includes files related to the organization of events and ceremonies such as Commencement, Baccalaureate services, Founders' Day celebrations, Board of Trustees dinners, awards banquets, special guests at football and basketball games, and many others.

The Duke University Office of Student Activities and Facilities (OSAF) serves as a liaison between the university administration and student groups, clubs, and organizations. The Office of Student Activities and Facilities Records, 1936-ongoing, contain correspondence, charters, directories, annual reports, financial statements, and other information on Duke University student organizations, including Duke Student Government, Associated Students of Duke University, the Undergraduate Publications board, the Duke University Union, and the Office of University Life. The OSAF Records also document Duke University student life more generally, including their social life, customs, and political activity.

Formal investigation into a study abroad program began in 1947 when Dean Alice Baldwin appointed a committee to study the status of existing opportunities for Duke students to study elsewhere and for foreign students to study at Duke. This collection contains correspondence, brochures, catalogs, clippings, photographs, a videotape, artifacts and other records. Some material in the collection focuses on the Hosei University (Tokyo) Summer Institute at Duke.

Contains correspondence, addresses, reports, memoranda, clippings and printed material documenting Woodhall's role in the governance of the University. Topics include the student unrest of the period, such as the Allen Building takeover and Vietnam War protests, unionization of the Medical Center, the management of University-owned housing, as well as Duke Forest.

The Chancellor of Duke University was a position under the President, designed to exercise all of the President's duties when delegated by the President if the President was incapacitated or absent from the position. The last active Chancellor was William Anlyan, whose time as Chancellor spanned from 1988 to 1995. After his tenure, the position is apparently no longer in use. The collection includes files from a variety of different committees and councils related to the administration of Duke University. Collection also includes personal correspondence from members of the Board of Trustees, materials related to planning for the construction of Duke Hospital North, files on a proposed rapid transit system, debt and operating reports, correspondence, and materials related to Duke University's affirmative action and equal employment opportunity policies and programs.

The Finance and Administration group is a part of the Office of the Provost of Duke University responsible for budgets and cost planning of all academic and administrative units under the Provost, as well as human resources, space planning, and the university's support of Duke Kunshan University. The collection includes materials related to planning and opening of Duke Kunshan University, student financial aid, and other topics.

The Registrar's position originated in 1899 with Dallas W. Newsom's appointment as Registrar and Recording Secretary to the Board of Trustees to focus on financial matters. In 1953, the office of the University Registrar's responsibilities expanded to include admissions, registration, and student records. The collection includes grade books from Normal and Trinity Colleges; subject files with information on financial aid, the Consortium on Financing Higher Education, and the Undergraduate Faculty Council of Arts and Sciences; statistical information kept on student admissions, enrollment, and grade performance; the official schedules of courses for semesters and summer school, mailings to students, and microfilmed copies of student transcripts.

The Office of the University Secretary at Duke University was established by by-law in 1903. The Office evolved with the University and the roles and responsibilities likely shifted from person to person. Today's Office most likely began in 1941 with Charles Jordan. The Secretary is an officer of the University and reports directly to the President. A major role of the Secretary's Office is to coordinate affairs of the Board of Trustees. Records include correspondence with Trustees and Presidents, Honorary Degrees and Search Committees for high-level administrators, reports, volunteer directories, faculty data and photographs, questionnaires and University by-laws. Some materials have been transferred to the Board of Trustees collection.

The Treasurer is an officer of the University whose duties have included supervision of contracts, relations with the Duke Endowment, and management of the Bursar's Office, student loans, and investments. The position of Treasurer is established by the By-laws of the University. In 1995, the Treasurer's post was taken up by the chief financial and administrative officer, the Executive Vice President. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence to and from individuals who served the University as Treasurer and the subject files they created while in office, including grants and contracts but also ledger and account books. The collection ranges in date from 1893-ongoing.

Contains memoranda, correspondence, budgets, reports, agreements, financial information, organizational records and other printed matter from the Office of the Vice President for Business and Finance. Records concern Duke University, its various academic departments, organizations, and benefactors, including the Medical Center. These records were created by Vice President for Business and Finance Gerhard Henricksen (1962-1966) and his successor Charles B. Huestis (1966-1985), and provide a detailed account of the university's financial status. Major topics include the university's relationship with the Duke Endowment and Local Unions 77 and 465, Medical Center construction;, university properties, physical plant, and facilities renovations, national professional organizations, several university committees, the Board of Trustees, the Duke University Athletic Association, WDBS campus radio station, the Duke Vigil, Duke University Marine Lab, Huestis' personal interests and affiliations, and the departments of the Business and Finance Division (including Housing, Data Processing and the Computation Center, Accounting, Dining Halls, Personnel, Materials Support, Safety and Traffic, TelCom, and Utilities), and the University Architect. The Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts works closely with Duke arts departments, Duke Performances and the Nasher Museum of Art to expand and coordinate arts programming on campus. The Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts records consists primarily of promotional materials related to arts events and performances at or related to Duke, as well as some materials related to advertising or promoting performances, organizing events, and regional arts organizations.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions coordinates admissions for Trinity College and the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University. Records include applications to Trinity College prior to the founding of Duke University (1911-1925), the administrative files of Admissions Director Robert H. Ballantyne (1967-1974), one file from Admissions Director Richard Steele, and a printed version of the website from 2001.

The Office of Undergraduate Education supports and coordinates the many facets of the undergraduate experience. The Office of Undergraduate Education records include reports, speeches, and reaccreditation materials, among other documents.

The Office of University Development is responsible for fund-raising programs in the areas of annual gifts, capital gifts, and program support. This collection contains correspondence, printed promotional materials, speeches, annual reports, and records related to fundraising. The collection also consists of a small number of photographs, questionnaires, and gift records.

The Office of University Life was created in the 1993 reorganization of the Division of Student Affairs and is responsible for cultural programming and scheduling of cultural facilities. It is also responsible for the oversight and advising of student organizations, including student government and the University Union. It was previously known as the Office of Cultural Affairs. This collection includes files on events, correspondence, memoranda and files created by Associate Dean of University Life, Richard Cox. The collection also contains files associated with the Greek Life Task Force, 1993-1994, which was established by the Student Affairs Board of Trustees Committee to examine the interaction between greek organizations and student life at Duke.

The Ohio Outdoor Advertising Corporation was an outdoor advertising company that operated in northern Ohio from 1965 to 2000. The Ohio Outdoor Advertising Corporation Records span the years 1929 to 1993 and include clippings, corporation reports, negatives, photograph albums, photographs, poster boards, promotional materials, regional maps, slides, and trade literature that document the operational history of Ohio Outdoor and related companies. The bulk of this collection consists of photographs and slides of billboards in northern Ohio from 1937 to 1993. Also included are photographs of Ohio street locations and outdoor advertising activities. Other outdoor advertising companies represented in the collection reflect mergers, acquisitions, and business connections between Ohio Outdoor and other firms, and include Dingeman Advertising, Inc.; Outdoor Communications, Inc. (OCI); Outdoor Graphics, Inc.; Indiana Outdoor Advertising Corporation; Kentucky Outdoor Advertising Corporation; E.A. Eckert Advertising Company; and T.R. Sammons Outdoor Advertising Company.

Olav K. Lundeberg taught at Duke in the Dept. of Romance Languages from 1931-1948. This collection includes photographs, a bulletin, and a guest log from social events hosted by Lundeberg and his wife.

The Olive Company was based in Clarinda, Ia. Collection comprises printed material supporting the purchase of the National Bust Developer, a vacuum appliance. Includes an advertising pamphlet (15 pgs.) for "perfect bust development," an order blank, and a sheet of endorsements. The advertising pamphlet explains flat-chestedness as follows: "In the natural order of things, maternity would have occurred early enough to prevent the loss of the busts. The development of the busts is greatly dependent upon the maternal instincts. The tendency of the day is to postpone marriage much beyond the age demanded by Nature. Hence it is that there are a multitude of women who are well developed in all other respects, but find to their chagrin that the busts are gradually disappearing." (p. 6)

Brown was a neurologist. The collection includes printed material, correspondence, clippings, and reprints.

Olive Pierce (1925-2016) was a documentary photographer based in Massachusetts and Maine. The collection comprises several hundred black-and-white photographic prints taken by Pierce over her long career. The earliest images (1960s) feature landscapes and individuals in Maine, a subject Pierce returned to throughout her life. Other subjects include: political protests in Cambridge, Massachusetts and life in the Jefferson Park neighborhood in Cambridge during the 1970s; high school students in Cambridge (1980s); the lives of Iraqi children in war zones in 1999 and 2003, and protests in the U.S. against that war. Also included are print publications featuring Pierce's photographs; publicity for exhibits and lectures; Pierce's 1987 guide to teaching photography; a video on DVD and audio lecture about her work; some correspondence; unpublished book mock-ups and a memoir/diary; a self-published illustrated partial memoir (2014); approximately 2557 film negatives; and about 40 slides featuring images of her early life and family. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.
