A letter to Cadell and Davies (booksellers and publishers) concerns his Medical advice to mothers and his Treatise on venereal disease. This letter was removed from the Thomas Cadell collection. A holograph note, in an anonymous hand, provides biographical information.

William Carter Gaventa (1921-2002) and Alice Price Gaventa (1921-2014) were medical missionaries who served in Eku and Ogbomosho, Nigeria, between 1949 and 1984. The William C. and Alice Price Gaventa papers collection comprises materials related to their missionary work. The collection also includes materials documenting the life of the Gaventa family, from 1921 to 2022. The collection contains photographs and slides, correspondence, devotional materials, genealogical materials, academic records, writings, postcards, clippings, passports, religious cards, and certificates, among other materials.

Graduate of Duke University and chair of the History Department at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Collection contains mainly papers pertaining to his work in the field of education. Prior to his position at Marist College, he taught history in Danville, Va. He was active in the Danville Education Assoc., and became the Virginia Education Association's president. In addition to professional correspondence, there is a great deal of personal correspondence with family and friends much of which relates to his life as a homosexual. Included also are financial papers, printed materials, clippings, addresses, writings (including a draft of his dissertation), and other records. There is some memorabilia from Olson's school days. Included among the volumes are diaries from his youth.

Railroad investor and land speculator of Defiance, Ohio. Family, business, and legal papers (chiefly 1799-1887) of William C. Holgate, of his father, Curtis Holgate, and of William's daughter, Fannie Holgate Harley. Papers before 1852 relate mostly to legal and business affairs of Holgate and his father, including investments in Ohio land and New York railroads; papers of his daughter begin in 1872 and are concerned with family affairs, but also include references to birth control, abortions, a smallpox epidemic, and the education of women. Includes letters from students at Hamilton College and the University of Vermont in the 1830s; papers relating to land speculation; and material pertaining to the economic development of Defiance, Ohio, and internal improvements and education in Ohio for the period from 1830-1840.

William Clair Turner, Jr. earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Duke University in 1971, his M.Div. from Duke Divinity School in 1974, and his Ph.D. in religion in 1984. He has held several administrative positions at Duke, including Assistant Provost and Dean of Black Affairs and Acting Director of the Afro-American Studies program. In 1982 he became a full-time faculty member in the Divinity School, directing the Office of Black Church Affairs before being appointed Professor of the Practice of Homiletics. He has pastored several churches, including his current position at Mt. Level Baptist Church and was previously ordained in the United Holy Church of America, Inc. denomination. The collection documents Turner's academic and personal activities. Materials include personal and administrative correspondence regarding Turner's roles as pastor and administrator, manuscripts of lectures and sermons, syllabi and notes for courses taught, notes from classes taken while a student, subject files, and records of the United Holy Church of America. The collection also includes VHS, CD, and DVD recordings of some of his sermons.

General merchant, Pittsylvania Co., Va. Correspondence, account books, daybooks, fee books, invoices, ledgers, memoranda books, records of sales, inventories, and letterpress copybooks, chiefly 1800-1869, of three generations of general merchants of Pittsylvania Co., Va. Business interests included a general store, a tavern, a blacksmith shop, a simplified type of banking, and the keeping of a post office. Large amounts of tobacco were bought and sold before the Civil War. Post-war records indicate a large volume of trade in Peruvian guano and commercial fertilizers. Partners in the firm included Philip L. Grasty and other members of the Grasty family, John F. Rison and Samuel Pannill. Includes letters (1849-1867) of John S. Grasty, a Presbyterian minister, referring to North Carolina agriculture, slave hiring, Unionist sympathy among the Dutch population of Botetourt Co., Va., and the devastation of Fincastle, Va., during the war.
