John Esten Cooke (1830-1886) was a novelist, historian, lawyer, and Confederate Army Officer, of Millwood (Clarke Co.), Va. Professional and personal correspondence and literary notes of John Esten Cooke and of his brother, Philip Pendleton Cook, poet and storyteller. The John E. Cooke papers include letters from boyhood friends, Civil War letters, business letters from publishers, critical letters from literary friends during the 1870s and 1880s, and notebooks of the war period. Includes manuscript copies of Cooke's Surry of Eagle's Nest, A legend of Turkey Buzzard Hollow, and On the road to despotism. The Philip P. The images examine the intertwined effects of violence, gangs, homicide, incarceration, poverty and urban renewal in Durham. Their subjects include African American families and their experiences of death, loss and grieving; felons' struggles post-prison; police officers and religious leaders; and gatherings of both predominantly Caucasian and African American communities. There are also several views of the city of Durham that highlight its varied and changing architecture. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Dr. Samuel DuBois Cook (1928-2017) was a political scientist who became Duke University's first African American professor in 1966. He also served as president of Dillard University from 1975 to 1997. The Samuel DuBois Cook Papers contains Cook's speech files, drafts and copies of Cook's writings, and other assorted papers including correspondence and subject folders for his research and writings on Benjamin Elijah Mays. Anna Julia Cooper papers, 1934-1951 0.1 Linear Feet (13 items)

Anna Julia Cooper was an American author, educator, sociologist, speaker, Black Liberation activist, and one of the most prominent African-American scholars in United States history. Collection comprises 9 items from and to Anna Julia Cooper regarding the disposition and placement of the Charlotte Forten Grimke diaries and her desire to bring all five of Grimke's diaries into a single repository. Cooper was likely Grimke's literary executor and was trying to obtain three of five diaries from the possession of Prof. Ray A. Billington, professor of history at Smith College and Northwestern University. Billington tried to convince Copper to place all five diaries in one place (either the Library of Congress or Howard University). Billington also corresponded with Dorothy Porter, head of the negro collection at Howard University, and Rayford Logan, professor of history at Howard University, to inform them of his attempts to persuade Cooper to place the diaries there. Cooper eventually decided Howard University was the place where the diaries should be preserved. In addition, there are three letters regarding Cooper's endorsement of the appointment of Charles Wesley to the Washington, D.C., School Board in 1936. Also, there is a program for a religious service held for Frelinghuysen University in 1934.

ALS to and from Cooper. Includes two notes from Catherine Cooper, Cooper's daughter, to Mr. and Mrs. Balderson and an anonymous recipient, and a note from W. Smith to Ann Cooper, Cooper's wife. Among Cooper's correspondents are well-known English physicians, scientists, and his patients. They include: A. Marcet, H. Halford, C.M. Clarke, J. Ingles, R. Leston, Sir C. Locock, Sir J. McGregor, A. Monro, Dr. Browne of Glasgow, Sir W. Lawrence, Sir C. Aldis, B. Travers, Dr. J.C.W. Lever, W.F. Montgomery, Dr. J. Kidd, Dr. Balderson, Dr. W. Prowl, H.S. Seton, J. Soogood, and B. Whittaker. Letters relate to personal and professional matters. The letters are in English. However, an ALS from Charles de Greti and an ANS from Pierre Moquet are in French. In his letters to Marcet, Cooper expresses strong opinions regarding the political situation in England and on the Continent during the Napoleonic wars. In his letters to Cooper, Kidd discusses the subject of medical reform. Seton's gossipy, personal letters relate to the royal family.

Francis P. Corbin (1801-1867) was a white plantation owner and resident of Paris, France, who married Agnes Rebecca Hamilton in 1825. Collection consists of financial and legal materials and correspondence related to Francis P. Corbin, his family, and the Couper and Hamilton families. Financial and legal papers include deeds, indentures, land grants, and surveys related to land in Virginia, Georgia, and Louisiana owned by the Corbin, Couper, and Hamilton families. Slavery papers in the collection document the enumeration, buying, and selling of enslaved people owned by the Corbin, Hamilton, and Couper families. Correspondence between members of the three families covers a variety of topics, including social and family matters, political discussions, plantation and business updates, race horses, theater and opera in Paris, the estate of James Hamilton, and railroad bonds.

Carl V. Corley (1921-2016) was a white novelist and illustrator who served in the Marines during World War II. Collections contains the writings, drawings, scrapbooks, notebooks, correspondence, and published materials that document Corley's career and artistic output of Corley. The collection also includes typescripts and manuscripts of published and unpublished works of gay fiction, southern history, and heterosexual and homosexual erotica, some of which is in the form of comic books or graphic novels. The Sabina Allred Allen Collection of Carl Corley Papers includes correspondence and illustrations from Corley.

Cosimo III de' Medici was the penultimate Medici Grand Duke of Tuscany. He reigned from 1670 to 1723, and was the elder son of Grand Duke Ferdinando II. Collection contains a letter on vellum that is a notice from Cosimo III de Medici (Duke of Etruria etc.), to John Philip de Incontris of Florence regarding rents of 222 and 220L in reference to John Philip’s equestrian military preparation. Dated at Florence, 1 February 1705, in the 35th year of the Dukedom of Etruria.

Henry Coullaud photograph albums of China, 1900 August 14-1901 September 18 2 Linear Feet (2 photograph albums)

Henry Coullaud (1872-1954) was a French military physician. The two albums contain 120 black-and-white photographs taken by Coullaud during the Boxer Rebellion in China, 1900-1901. Album 1 starts with images of the French naval personnel with whom he travelled, French ships, and the allied fleets, along with scenes taken in the ports of Djibouti, Port Said, Singapore, and Taku (Dagu). The rest of the images offer views of the cities of Tianjin, Baodingfu, Dingzhou, and Zhengdingfu. There are images of many types of buildings, markets and merchants, river life, modes of transportation, entertainments, a public execution, and images of rural life and work. There are a number of group portraits of Chinese and French officials and wealthy Chinese men, as well as a group portrait in a French medical clinic, and officers putting on a theatrical play and celebrating July 14th. There are also some photographs of urban and rural Chinese women. The albums seem to have been a gift from a Chinese family to Coullaud, whose last name, spelled phonetically in Chinese characters, appears on the album covers.

William J. Covington physician's account books, 1898-1907 0.5 Linear Feet (1 box)

Dr. William J. Covington (1852-1917) was a physician based in Cartersville (Bartow County), Georgia. Collection consists of two account books of 200 pages each, with entries specifying his patients' names, race, dates, types of consultations, fees charged, and payments, which included cash as well as services and goods. Covington visited local white and African American persons. Procedures noted include many obstetrical visits, tooth extractions, wounds, minor operations, and at least one explicitly noted abortion for which he gave chloroform. Medicines are rarely named. Two informal notes from patients and a few other laid-in items are included. Acquired as part of the George Washington Flowers Collection of Southern Americana.

Frederick Augustus Grant Cowper papers, 1900-1975 13.5 Linear Feet

Frederick Cowper was an educator, born in Island Pond, Vermont, March 3, 1883. He received his B.A.,1906, and M.A., 1911, at Trinity College, Hartford, CT, and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, 1920. Cowper also received an L.H.D, from Trinity College in 1956. He was the author of, The Sources, Date and Style of Ille et Galeron, by Gautier d'Arras, (1922), and other works. Cowper was a professor of Romance Languages, Trinity College, Durham, NC, 1918-1924, Duke University, 1924-1952. He married Mary O. Thompson, (1881-1968) in 1909. Dr. Cowper died in Durham on January 24, 1978. There were no children. This collection contains correspondence, diaries, manuscripts, printed material, photographs and film, with bulk dates 1920-1970, produced or acquired by Professor Cowper.

Courtland Cox (1941- ) is an African American civil rights activist, former member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and a manager and co-owner of Drum and Spear Bookstore in Washington, D.C. His papers consist of materials related to the Drum and Spear Bookstore and associated organizations, folders related to his tenure as the Secretary General of the Sixth Pan-African Congress in Tanzania, and subject files and audiovisual materias related to the civil rights movement in the South during the 1960s. Audiovisual materials consist largely of oral history interviews with veterans of the civil rights movement. Banker and manufacturer of High Point, N.C. May have been a Quaker. The Jonathan E. Cox Papers chiefly consist of the business records of a banker and manufacturer from High Point, North Carolina. Records date from 1885-1938 and include many boxes of business and personal correspondence, chiefly letters to Cox; and a series of manuscript volumes, including journals, daybooks, order books, trial balance books, ledgers, profit-and-loss accounts, bill books, inventory records, rent book, check stubs, mill contracts, a letter book, and an account book of Joseph D. Cox. There are few personal items, but there is some biographical information on Cox's daughter, Clara I. Cox, a Quaker also living in High Point, who was active in civic and humanitarian affairs in that city.

Meinrad Craighead (1936–2019) was an award-winning artist and writer whose works focused on humankind's relationship with God. She had lived and worked around the world, but eventually settled in New Mexico in the 1980s. The collection includes letters; photographs; exhibition catalogs and publicity; public response to her poems and books; research and notes on mythologies, art, and nature; and other personal materials from her life. The materials largely date from the 1960s through the 2000s, covering her scholarship in Europe, her time in England as a nun in Stanbrook Abbey, and the years following her return to New Mexico. Includes Craighead's prayer books and psalters, some dating from the early 1900s, as well as some copies of her own publications and artwork. Braxton Craven records and papers, 1839-1882. 9.2 Linear Feet

Braxton Craven (1822-1882) served as an administrator and educator during the nineteenth century evolution of Trinity College (Randolph County, N.C.). Craven was Principal of Union Institute (1842-1851), President of Normal College (1851-1859), and President of Trinity College (1859-1863, 1866-1882). In addition, Craven actively participated in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and the Order of the Masons in North Carolina. Collection includes correspondence, sermons and addresses, diaries, legal and financial papers, teaching materials, subject files, and photographs and portraits of Braxton Craven. Correspondents include John Wesley Alspaugh, Charles Force Deems, David Lowry Swain, David Settle Reid, Henry Toole Clark, and Calvin H. Wiley. Subjects include the Methodist Episcopal Church, college financial affairs, and the activities of the Trinity Guard, a unit of student-soldiers that Craven formed during the Civil War. English.

James Braxton Craven papers, 1961-1977 224 Linear Feet 168,210 Items

North Carolina lawyer and federal judge. The legal and judicial papers of U.S. Circuit Court Judge James Braxton Craven span the years 1961-1977. Files of correspondence, memoranda, and legal motions and orders concern a multitude of cases in which Craven was involved. Cases include civil suits; criminal cases, including many prisoners' petitions for Writs of Habeas Corpus, particularly since Gideon v. Wainwright; and appeals from administrative boards and commissions, including the FCC, SEC, NLRB, and others. After 1970, Craven served on "three-judge" district court sessions, special courts which usually relate to civil suits raising questions of governmental policy and of constitutional law, and the files document these as well. There are also files dating from 1964-1973 which concern school integration cases. The correspondence between judges is particularly significant, revealing the intersection of personal belief and the carrying out of judicial processes in the lower and higher courts. The collection also includes a précis outlining the legal philosophy and the highlights of Craven's career, but contains very little personal material.

The Craven-Pegram Family Papers span the period 1785 to 1966, with the bulk dating from 1892 to 1958. The collection chiefly consists of correspondence among various family members and friends, and photographs. Included are legal and financial papers, writings and speeches, genealogical material, newsclippings, and printed material. While the principal focus of the collection is Sallie Kate Craven (Kate) and her sister, Emma L. (Craven) Pegram and her family, information about earlier generations of the Craven, Pegram, and Leach families is included in the legal and genealogical material.

The Frederick C. Crawford films consist of 38 16mm films chronicling the travels of Cleveland businessman Frederick C. Crawford from 1936 to 1980. In addition, the collection includes a photo album presented to Crawford by Trans World Airlines in 1953, documenting an around-the-world survey, in which Crawford participated as a technical consultant, that TWA completed in 1952.

James Ludovic Lindsay collection of French manuscripts, 1767-1863 1.75 Linear Feet 223 Items

James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford and 9th Earl of Balcarres, was a British astronomer, politician, and noted collector of books and manuscripts. Lindsay inherited a considerable library from his father, but during his lifetime he assembled the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, one of the largest private libraries of the nineteenth century. In the 1880s, Lindsay’s fortunes suffered and he was forced to sell much of his rare book library, although he continued to collect proclamations, broadsides, and manuscripts of the French Revolutionary era. After Lindsay’s death, his heirs auctioned off most of what remained of his collections, including his French manuscripts. Collection consists of selected letters, administrative papers, and other manuscripts, chiefly of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods, that bear the bookplate and previously formed part of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, the private library of James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford. Lindsay's collection of French manuscripts was auctioned off by Sotheby's between 1924 and 1925 and a small portion was acquired by Duke in 1960. Duke's collection represents a very small fraction of Lindsay's original collection and consists chiefly of manuscripts, with typed transcripts in French, that document various aspects of civil administration including letters from the prefects of various departments, letters from government ministers, and several letters addressed to Comte Collin de Sussy, Minister of Commerce and Manufacturing, and the Comte d'Antraigues. Other materials in the collection include letters in English from French elites to British nobility, such as to the Duke of York, and letters from French aristocrats to government officials. Examples include a letter addressed to Napoleon Bonaparte from Arnoud Joubert, a lawyer at the imperial court of Paris, discussing the possibility of receiving a medal of honor, and a letter from Cardinal Albani to Alexander I, Emperor of Russia, requesting the Emperor's protection from French authorities. The collection also includes some manuscripts and engravings acquired separately that do not bear the Bibliotheca Lindesiana bookplate.

James (Jimmy) Edward Creech (1944-) is a former United Methodist minister and activist. He was an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church from 1970 to 1999, serving as a minister in North Carolina and Omaha, Nebraska, and as the North Carolina Council of Churches' liaison with the North Carolina General Assembly. In 1999, The United Methodist Church revoked his credentials of ordination following two church trials for conducting covenant ceremonies for two same-sex couples in 1997 and 1999. Collection includes printed material, documentation of the church trials, and Creech's sermons and writings, including the original unedited manuscript of his memoir, Adam's Gift, initially entitled, The Church on Trial.

Richard Stephen Creed papers, 1959 April-July 0.1 Linear Feet

Richard Stephen Creed was vice-chancellor of New College, Oxford, England. Collection documents the controversy that followed publication of Dr. Seymour J. G. Spencer's article, "Homosexuality among Oxford Undergraduates," in the Journal of Mental Science in April 1959, which received press coverage in England and the United States. The article discussed the psychiatric treatment of such students. Contains Creed's corrected copy of the reprinted article and an excerpt from the July meeting minutes for the Warneford Management committee, where faculty and staff mentioned in the article's acknowledgments expressed their outrage at the unwanted and sensational publicity. Professor of history at Morgan State University, scholar of the history of African Americans in the motion picture industry, prolific author of books and articles on the subject, and script writer. The papers of Thomas Cripps date from 1839 to 2009, and are arranged into three divisions: films, photographic stills of African American actors and productions, and professional papers, the largest group. Taken as a whole, the films, movie stills, research files, and publication files document Cripps's investigations into representations of racial and ethnic stereotypes in popular culture, particularly in film, but also touch on other issues such as gender in popular culture, portrayal of race in Nazi Germany, and the social dimensions of African American life in the U.S. during the 20th century. Other materials stem from college-level courses taught by Cripps on these same topics, and include many of the visual resources he used in his classes. There is also printed material on reproductive topics. Also includes 2 VHS videocassettes; 6 color slides; 30 black-and-white and 2 color photographs. Addition 2003-007 (67 items, 7.3 linear ft.; undated) is composed of 16mm films used by "Crist Clinic Audio Visuals" in health education programs (undated). The clinic also offered the films for sale or rent to educators, students, doctors, parents, and others. The majority of the films focus on sex education for children and teenagers. Topics include puberty and menstruation, sex and sexuality, sexual orientation, lifestyle choices, and sexually transmitted diseases. Mason Crum (1887-1980) served on the faculty in the Department of Religion at Duke University from 1930 to 1957, specializing in race relations and Christianity, as well as the social history of the Gullah community of the South Carolina Sea Islands. Alfred Cumming was a Superintendent in the Office of Indian Affairs Central Superintendency, and later was appointed as Utah's second Territorial Governor, succeeding Brigham Young. This collection contains materials from the Cumming family dating back to the early 1800s, including the War of 1812; documentation from Alfred Cumming's role in negotiating a treaty on behalf of the US government with indigenous tribes from the present-day Blackfeet Nation (Montana); and materials from Alfred and Elizabeth Cumming's harrowing experiences with the Utah Expedition in 1857-1858, including detailed descriptions by Elizabeth Cumming of their travels and encounters with wildlife, winter weather, white Mormon settlers, and occasionally hostile indigenous tribes. There are also materials documenting Cumming's Utah governorship, including letters from Brigham Young; reports about Mormon emigration and settlements; communications regarding federal appropriations, US Army movements, and "Indian farms;" petitions and letters to Cumming from families seeking information about missing people, presumed to be in Utah; and administrative records documenting the Western American frontier of the mid-1800s.

Business records and some personal correspondence of four generations of the Cuningham family, including Robert Cuningham; Alexander Cuningham, and his brother, Richard M. Cuningham; the latter's son, John Wilson Cuningham; and grandson, John Somerville Cuningham, all merchants and planters. The early papers center around Alexander and Richard's success as commission merchants for cotton and tobacco in Petersburg, Va., and the firm's planting interests in Person County, N.C. The collection also contains a few family letters, including some from Alexander Jr. while a student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and from another son at Leasburg Academy, Caswell County, N.C. Earl Garfield Cunningham (1911-1983) was an African American U.S. Army Lieutenant who served with the 371st Infantry in Italy from October 1944 to the end of 1945. While in Italy, he participated in the campaigns of North Apennines and Po Valley. collection includes 12 scrapbook pages containing more than 150 amateur corner-mounted photographs taken primarily in Italy, together with postcards of Italian sights; military appointment certificates and news clippings; military records; military awards including the Bronze Star Medal; and additional photographs that collectively document the military career and experiences of African American soldier Earl G. Cunningham. Locations documented in Garfield's photographs include Genova, Pisa, Viareggio, Massa, Pietrasanta, and Savona, Images include city streets, rural landscapes, coastal views, damaged buildings and destroyed tanks, Italian citizens, American soldiers, and partisan cemeteries. Johnny Long was a native of Newell, North Carolina and a student at Duke University from 1931 to 1935. In 1931, Long and ten other Duke freshmen formed the Duke Collegians Orchestra, later the Johnny Long Orchestra. Long and the Orchestra recorded several hits and performed at jazz venues around the country. Long continued to perform until his death in 1972. The scrapbook contains photographs, clippings, gig posters and advertisements, album liner notes, and other assorted memorabilia related to the Duke Collegians and the Johnny Long Orchestra and other big bands from North Carolina with inclusive dates 1931-1990.

Dance Pages (circa 1983-1997), a quarterly magazine, presented its readers with articles about a wide range of dance genres, performances, companies, and individual dancers. The magazine also contained studio listings, book and video reviews, and information about dance history and health. Kenneth Romo and Donna Gianell, both professional dancers, created Dance Pages as a hobby, and they continued to serve as the publishers and editors of the magazine as it grew in size and scope. In 1995, the magazine changed names, becoming Dance & the Arts, and moved to a bimonthly publication schedule. The magazine ceassed publication in 1997. The Mark Danner Papers date from 1970 to 2004 and focus predominately on Danner's coverage of Haiti during the period of unrest that followed President Jean-Claude ("Baby Doc") Duvalier's exile in 1986. Additional materials document Danner's interest in the Balkan Wars during the 1990's and preliminary research on the El Mozote massacre in El Salvador. These materials include research notes, travel information, newspaper clippings, and VHS tapes.

New York-based advertising agency formed in 1985 by the merger of the Benton & Bowles and D'Arcy-MacManus and Masius advertising agencies. In 2002 the agency closed upon acquisition by French company Publicis. Collection includes memoranda; correspondence; reports; corporate publications; marketing research reports; manuals; employee reference material; press releases; a press book; speeches; clippings; photographs and negatives in color and black-and-white; films, video and sound recordings, and DVDs; book manuscripts; financial papers; and a scrapbook. The collection documents the history of Benton & Bowles advertising; the merger of the D'Arcy MacManus Masius and Benton & Bowles companies; the early careers of William Benton and Atherton W. Hobler; employee training, recruitment, and management; corporate publications; and marketing research. Clients represented include the Procter & Gamble Company, General Foods Corporation, Allied Chemical Corporation, Avco Corporation, Colgate Palmolive Co., Florida Citrus Commission, International Business Machines Corporation, and West Point Pepperell. 3 ALS. One letter relates to methods of observing flies. A letter addressed to Jenner Weir discusses sexual selection among birds, the possibility of inherited effects of injury, and the question whether birds construct their nests based on instinct or learning. This letter makes mention of Edward Jenner, George Rolleston and Alfred Russel Wallace.
