The Firsts Reference Collection contains files of notes and clippings documenting first instances in a variety of areas. This collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research.

The Center for Documentary Studies is a center at Duke University established for the study of the documentary process. The color photographs and oral histories in the Five Farms: Stories From American Farm Families collection form part of a multimedia project carried out under the auspices of the Center for Documentary Studies. Beginning in March 2008, photographers Alix Lowrey Blair, Andrew Lewis, Tom Rankin, Elena Rue, and Steve Schapiro, along with audio specialists Ben Adler, Rob Dillard, Camille Lacapa, Susannah Lee, and John Biewen, each visited an American farm and documented the farm families' experiences over the course of a year. The locations for the Five Farms series are: a family farm on the Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona; an organic farm in California's Capay Valley; a dairy farm in western Massachusetts; a diversified farm in central Iowa; and an African American-owned hog farm in eastern North Carolina. Florence Moss Smith papers, 1916-1973 4 Linear Feet circa 3,840 items

The Florence Moss Smith Papers span the period 1916 to 1973 and consist almost entirely of correspondence. The bulk of the collection consists of letters exchanged between Florence and Frank Smith during their courtship and after their marriage between 1942 and 1945 when Frank Smith was serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While this World War II correspondence forms the crux of the collection, the papers also chronicle Florence Smith's life from her undergraduate days at Duke University until the marriage of her children more than three decades later. One of the greatest research values of the collection, is its depiction of the impact World War II had upon families.

Florence Nightingale papers, 1870-1941 and undated, [bulk 1870-1897]. 14 items

Papers include letters to William Howell Reed, thanking him for the gift of his Hospital life in the Army of the Potomac; to Lady Marian Alford, relating to the Lord Stratford de Redcliffe Memorial Fund; and a series of personal and very affectionate letters to Miss A.P. Lemon, later Mrs. L. Roscoria, a colleague and personal friend, regarding her health, as well as the illness of her mother, and affairs of the hospital. Other items are newspaper clippings about Nightingale and a postcard bearing her portrait.

Florence Tate papers, 1960-2006 4 Linear Feet

Florence Tate (1931-2014) was a civil rights and pan-African activist based in Washington, DC. Involved in activism in support of Angolan independence, she later worked in support of the UNITA faction in the Angolan Civil War. In the United States, she worked as a press secretary for the first mayoral administration of Marion Barry and subsequently for the 1984 presidential campaign of Jesse Jackson.

Floriana or the method of constructing artificial flowers, circa 1830 0.7 Linear Feet (1 item)

Madame de Rhinfeld, née St. Clair, grew up in a convent in France, where she was instructed in the construction of artificial flowers. She later used this skill to make a living in England. Collection comprises an handwritten, unpublished manuscript volume (256 written pages, plus 45 watercolor and 5 pen and ink plates of illustrations) by Madame de Rhinfeld, written around 1830. In the manuscript, Rhinfeld provides detailed instruction on how to create 24 different artificial flowers, and describes the tools used to make them. Flowers include pomegranate, hyacinth, roses, pansies, narcissus, geraniums, and orange flowers, among others. Includes watercolor diagrams regarding the construction of each flower, with additional paintings of the finished piece. The instructions are accompanied by a chapter of poetry, stories, quotations, and commentary related to each flower. Scattered throughout the manuscript are other pen and ink drawings. Includes an index to flowers and to poets.

The Floyd Millard Riddick Papers, 1909 to 2000, (bulk 1950-1983), consist of correspondence, writings and speeches, printed material, senate documents, photographs, and organizational papers documenting Riddick's career as the Assistant Parliamentarian, Parliamentarian, and Parliamentarian Emeritus of the United States Senate. The Correspondence Series includes correspondence to and from senators, presidents, and other political figures concerning the rules and procedures of the United States Senate.

U.S. naval surgeon and medical historian. Pleadwell's correspondents include fellow military physicians and medical historians, who write on personal, professional and political matters. Correspondents of note include Arthur W. May, R.C. Munday, Charles Loomis Dana, William W. Keen, Charles Marsh Beadnell, Horace Manchester Brown, J. Chalmers Da Costa, Henry Barton Jacobs, Francis R. F. Norman Phelps scrapbook, 1926-1935 and undated 1 Linear Feet

F. Norman Phelps was a Chevrolet sales executive in various cities, including Milwaukee, Wisc.; Detroit, Mich., Davenport, Ia.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Los Angeles, Calif. Full name: Fredrick Norman Phelps; b. 20 March 1895 in Bucyrus (Crawford County), Ohio; d. 23 January 1974 in Piedmont, Calif. Collection comprises a scrapbook (about 54 pgs) documenting Phelps' career as a Chevrolet sales executive. Includes primarily newspaper clippings and black-and-white photographs, although there are also such items as letters, telegrams, news releases, programs (including those for national auto exhibits, sales conventions, and other events), menus, song lyric sheets, a medallion name tag, and other ephemera, all housed in a leather "Chevrolet Sales Speeder" three-ring binder. The newspaper clippings and letters document Phelps' various transfers and promotions; other items cover topics such as company-sponsored hunting events, meals, outings, vintage cars, and skits. There is only one unrelated item: a newspaper clipping from 1926 tells of Phelps' escape from a house fire.

The materials in the collection date from 1982-2004.

Folio Club records, 1927-2020 3.25 Linear Feet

Durham's Folio Club was founded by Duke University faculty wives and other Duke-affiliated women in 1927. This collection includes the records of the Folio Club, including meeting minutes, programs, correspondence, and clippings related to the activities of the club and its members. Additionally, audiocassettes in the collection date from the late 1980s and contain recordings of Folio Club members discussing various writers.

Foote, Cone & Belding Communications, Inc. records, 1941-1978 and undated 6 Linear Feet

The Foote, Cone & Belding advertising agency (FCB) was formed in 1942 when Albert Lasker sold the Lord & Thomas agency to three of his executives. A pioneer in television advertising, FCB later merged with Draft Direct Worldwide to become Draftfcb, a subsidiary of The Interpublic Group, and one of the largest advertising agencies in the United States. The Foote, Cone & Belding Communications, Inc. Records span the years 1964-1978 and consists of audiotapes, videocassettes, 16mm film, focus group studies, television schedules, scripts and photoboards from television commercials. Clients include Armour-Dial, Burger King, Hormel, Interstate Brands (Wonder Bread), Johnson & Johnson, Kraft, Pizza Hut, McDonald's, S.C. Johnson, Sears & Roebuck, Western Electric, and Zenith. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Foundation for Southeast Asian Art and Culture records, 1954-2002 and undated 26.9 Linear Feet 15,500 Items

On a 1957 trip to India and China, Doris Duke stopped in Thailand, and it is likely that the exploration of Bangkok and its art and architecture she saw on that visit inspired her to dream of creating a Thai village in Hawaii with houses similar to those she had seen. In December of 1960, she formally hired François Duhau de Berenx to help bring it to pass. The Thai House Foundation was established on January 30, 1961; the name was changed to the Foundation for Southeast Asian Art and Culture (SEAAC) in June of that same year. The establishment of the Foundation resulted in a project that Doris Duke saw as a gift to Hawaii, and one that occupied her for many years. At least five sites in Hawaii were considered for the Thai Village and it was the choice of an appropriate location that ultimately proved the stumbling block to completion of the project. Although her dream of a Thai Village was never fulfilled, Doris Duke's interest in Asia continued, as she continued purchasing objects right up until her death in 1993. In 2002, a significant portion of the collection was donated to two museums distinguished for their collections of Southeast Asian art; the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. The collection documents the establishment and management of Doris Duke's Foundation for Southeast Asian Art and Culture (SEAAC). Records in the Administrative series document the purchase and transport of art objects and building parts, Doris Duke's attempts to locate a site for the Thai Village, and the financial records associated with the daily operations and management of the foundation and its assets. The Photograph series consists primarily of black and white images of the art objects and building parts purchased for SEAAC, with some images of houses in Bangkok and other Thai buildings, which served as the inspiration for the Thai Village. The architectural records in this collection include various drawings of the proposed village site and plans for the various buildings that were to be constructed.

Founders' Day Reference collection, 1902-ongoing 3 Linear Feet

This collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research. It includes the general history of Founders' Day, lists of speakers (1926-2006), recipient lists for various honoraries including: the University Medal for Distinguished Meritorious Service at Duke; Distinguished Alumni Award; distinguished Teaching Awards; University Teacher/Scholar Award; Trinity College Distinguished Teaching Award; Howard Johnson Distinguished Teaching Award; and Humanitarian Service Award. The collection also has speeches/remarks/sermons/ programs for the Founders' Day celebrations throughout the years (1901; 1916; 1930-2006), as well, as a scrapbook of the 1956 Founders' Day celebration that commemorated the 100th anniversary of James Buchanan Duke's birth.

The United Nations' Fourth World Conference on Women was held in Beijing, China, in 1995 and built on political agreements that had been reached at the three previous global conferences on women. Collection includes conference publications, information packets, schedules, activism calls, and posters collected by attendee Margot Smith, as well as videos produced by Smith. All materials date from 1995 unless otherwise indicated.

Fowler family papers, 1779-1870 4.2 Linear Feet (9 Boxes; 1 volume)

Included in this collection are records, 1779-1809, of a mercantile business run by Stephen Fowler, Fairfield, Connecticut, and after 1805 of Trenton, Jones Co., North Carolina, which engaged in trade between New York and North Carolina. Stephen's son Joseph about 1820 engaged in the export of lumber, naval stores, tobacco, grain, and blackeyed peas from North Carolina to Bermuda; and later in coastal trade from New Bern to New York. There is also correspondence relating to his duties as U.S. deputy marshal, Pamlico District, N.C., 1831-1860. Family correspondence predominates between 1840 and 1860. For the Civil War years there are many letters from Joseph S. Fowler, Jr., written largely from the Confederate Commissary Office, Kinston, N.C. The collection also includes two Yale university diplomas; a ledger of Joseph S. Fowler, (1817-1834), 1836, 1866, 1 vol.; financial and legal papers, 1800-1860; the logbook of Absalom Fulford kept on the Neuse River lightship, 1845-1849, recording weather and the passage of ships; and business letters to DeWitt C. Fowler and Brother, Bay River (N.C.) general store and liquor merchants.

Fowlkes family papers, 1788-1930s 2 Linear Feet (3 boxes)

The Fowlkes family owned and operated Hyde Park Plantation in Nottoway County, Virginia, beginning in the late 18th century through the early 20th century. This collection contains an assortment of plantation ledgers, slave records, correspondence, and loose manuscript ephemera about the Fowlkes, specifically John Fowlkes and son Paschal Fowlkes, along with documentation of people they enslaved.

Fox and Backhouse family papers, 1673-1930s 1 Linear Feet

Jonathan and Hannah Chapman Backhouse were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) in England in the mid-1800s. Their son, Edmund Backhouse, married Juliet Fox in 1848. This collection contains personal correspondence between members of the different connected Quaker families based in England, as well as some diaries, genealogical notes, and other printed ephemera from the family. Forms part of the Lisa Unger Baskin Collection in the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Frances Campbell Brown was a professor of chemistry at Duke from approximately 1931-1973, and a professor emeriti after 1973. Professor Brown was also active in the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), serving as its second vice president from 1964-1966. This collection contains correspondence, subject files, committee minutes, printed matter, speeches, and reports concerning personal, professional, departmental, university matters as well as the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). The bulk of the material dates from 1958-1968.

Government employee and North Carolina resident. Collection consists primarily of correspondence to Mrs. Weed. She graduated from the University of Texas, worked as a secretary for the government, and the Texas Gulf Sulphur Company and served in the military during WWII. She settled with her second husband in Asheville, NC. Other items include legal documents, stock reports, tax statements, clippings, school report cards, church programs, pictures, photo albums, and three volumes of memorabilia from the school days of her children.

Frances Hooper (1892-1986) was founder and president of the Frances Hooper Advertising Agency in Chicago, Illinois, and was one of the first female advertising executives in the United States. This collection consists of three spiral-bound volumes of typed memoirs written by Hooper during the 1970s. Subjects include her childhood, her journalism career in Chicago, her transition into advertising with Marshall Fields, and descriptions of her friends, her travels, and her book collections. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Frances Klein (b. October 19, 1915) is a female jazz musician who began her career in the early 1930s. She played trumpet in a number of jazz bands, most notably the all-female bands led by Irene Vermillion and Ina Ray Hutton. The collection contains materials compiled by Klein from throughout her musical career, consisting of clippings, posters, programs, and photographs of Klein and many other contemporary musicians.

Frances Power Cobbe letters, 1886 and undated 0.1 Linear Feet (2 items)

Frances Power Cobbe was an Irish writer, social reformer, anti-vivisection activist, and leading women's suffrage campaigner. Cobbe wrote the first letter to Mrs. Madden, undated but probably in 1886, regarding vivisection along with the poor treatment of horses. She wrote the second, undated, letter to Miss Galtz[?], regarding a planned visit.

Francis Bedford was an English photographer. Collection comprises an album featuring sixteen albumen landscape views by Francis Bedford; all have printed captions. There are an additional ten albumen photographs that have been pasted in that feature handwritten captions; it is not clear if these are also photographs by Bedford. Topics generally include castles, water features, and views of Tenby and other towns. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Francisco Puente letter, Jerez de las Caballeros, Spain, to George Read, Consul General of the United States, Malaga, 1845, June 28 1 items

ALS. Fuente submits two recipes which he has found to be effective in the alleviation of yellow fever and asks that his findings be reported to the U.S. Consuls in Mexico and the Antilles and to the authorities in Vera Cruz, Havana and Philadelphia. Fuente understood the yellow fever to be a kind of colic, a disease of the digestive organs.

Francis P. Corbin papers, 1662-1885 5 Linear Feet (2 boxes, 2 oversize folders)

Francis P. Corbin (1801-1867) was a white plantation owner and resident of Paris, France, who married Agnes Rebecca Hamilton in 1825. Collection consists of financial and legal materials and correspondence related to Francis P. Corbin, his family, and the Couper and Hamilton families. Financial and legal papers include deeds, indentures, land grants, and surveys related to land in Virginia, Georgia, and Louisiana owned by the Corbin, Couper, and Hamilton families. Slavery papers in the collection document the enumeration, buying, and selling of enslaved people owned by the Corbin, Hamilton, and Couper families. Correspondence between members of the three families covers a variety of topics, including social and family matters, political discussions, plantation and business updates, race horses, theater and opera in Paris, the estate of James Hamilton, and railroad bonds.

Francis Warrington Dawson family papers, 1386-1963, bulk 1859-1950 30 Linear Feet

Journalist, of Charleston, S.C., and Versailles, France. The collection contains the papers of Francis Warrington Dawson, who was born Austin John Reeks; his wife, Sarah Ida Fowler Morgan Dawson; and their son, Francis Warrington Dawson II, better known as Warrington Dawson. The papers are primarily literary in character but also include many letters. Francis's papers are primarily autobiographical with information about his Civil War service, travels, courtship, and career. Also present are Morgan family papers describing social life in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., in the second half of the 19th century, especially during Reconstruction. Warrington Dawson materials document his work with the American Embassy in Paris and describes French life and politics. Also present is material from his work as director of French Research for Colonial Williamsburg, Inc., including copies (made from the originals at Colonial Williamsburg) of original documents pertaining to French participation in the American Revolution. Also included are copies of 18th century maps of North America, Williamsburg, Va., and positions of the French and American armies in New York and Virginia during the Revolutionary War.

Francis W. Pickens papers, 1772-1900 1 Linear Feet (2 boxes and 2 oversize folders)

Francis Wilkinson Pickens (1805-1869) was a white politician, enslaver, and plantation owner of Edgefield, South Carolina. He was the governor of South Carolina from 1860-1862. This collection consists of the political and personal correspondence (chiefly 1809-1886) and legal papers of Pickens and his family, concerning secession, the outbreak of the Civil War, slavery, and other matters. The majority of the material dating from 1863-1864 consists of the correspondence and other records of Milledge L. Bonham, Pickens' successor as governor of South Carolina. The collection includes one volume of plantation records (1839-1864) and several bills of sale for enslaved persons. Correspondents include P. G. T. Beauregard, M. L. Bonham, Braxton Bragg, Joseph E. Brown, Armistead Burt, Lewis Cass, W.M. Churchwell, Jefferson Davis, R.W. Gibbes, Isaac W. Hayne, J.L. Orr, and William H. Seward.

This collection primarily documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings and speeches, professional activities, and teaching. It forms part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Frank A. Fernekes photographs and postcards, 1915-1948 and undated 0.4 Linear Feet Approx. 100 Items

Frank Fernekes (1872-1953) was a commercial photographer with an interest in circus and Wild West themes; he was born and resided in New York until sometime before 1927, then moved permanently to Hollywood, California and was active through the 1940s. Collection contains photographs and postcards chiefly dating from the 1910s through the 1930s, with a few from the 1940s. All of the photographs are black-and-white and were taken by photographer Frank Fernekes. They feature a set of views of El Paso, Texas, in 1915, which include several images of African Americans and inhabitants probably of Mexican descent; a large set of images of California circus performers, actors and performers in Western-themed costumes, and Native Americans in costumes and traditional dress; and a large souvenir photograph with Fernekes taken at McLoed's Happy Hollow amusement park in Arkansas, circa 1923. The collection also includes a set of color souvenir postcards with early 20th century Western-themed illustrations of cowboys and cowgirls, and a few black-and-white postcards relating to Buffalo Bill Cody, a Yuma Indian band from Arizona, and other Western themes.

Frank Allan Hanna papers, 1850-1936 2.5 Linear Feet 250 Items

Frank Allan Hanna was a professor of economics at Duke University from 1948-1972. The collection contains largely bound materials from the Wisconsin State Income Tax Study Hanna worked on but it also includes Hanna family genealogy and ledger books for "Negro Accounts" from the antebellum period and galley proofs for one of Hanna's publications. The collection ranges in date from 1850-1936.

These circuit plans, collected by Frank Baker, document the history, growth, and organization of the itinerancy, established by John Wesley in the early years of the church when Methodism began to spread into the rural areas of England. Frank Baker (1910-1999) was a faculty member at Duke University in history, an expert on Wesleyan Methodism, and a rare book and manuscripts collector. The Frank Baker Collection of Wesleyana and British Methodism, 1536-1996 and undated, comprises correspondence, writings, local histories, printed items, engravings, and many other manuscript materials that date from the earliest years of Methodism to its worldwide expansion up to the 20th century. The collection includes the correspondence of two of the most important founders of Methodism, John and Charles Wesley, as well as correspondence from members of the Wesley family. Frank Clyde Brown (1870-1943) served as Professor of English at Trinity College and Duke University, and as Comptroller and University Marshall of Duke University. He oversaw the initial construction of Duke University's West Campus and the renovation of East Campus. Brown also founded the North Carolina Folklore Society. The Frank C. Brown Papers contain correspondence, logs, diaries, reports, lantern slides, notebooks, clippings, a scrapbook, and other materials. English professor, Duke University, folklorist of Durham, N.C., and founder in 1913 of the North Carolina Folklore Society. Collection centers around Frank Clyde Brown's lifelong exploration and collecting of North Carolina and Appalachian folklore, which resulted in this vast archival collection of original folklore materials and editorial records for the seven-volume Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore (published 1952-1964). Collection is comprised of field recordings on wax cylinders and phonodiscs; tens of thousands of field notes, transcriptions of original songs, stories, and traditional expressions; musical scores; and numerous journal articles, student theses, books, and lists. Also included are the papers of Charles Bond, a Duke graduate student who studied and expanded the collection in 1970. The vast majority of the folklore sources originated in North Carolina, but there are some materials from other regions. Frank Espada was a political activist and documentary photographer of Puerto Rican extraction based in New York and California. His photographic archives comprise thousands of black-and-white photographs and negatives and related materials concerning Espada's lifelong work documenting the Puerto Rican diaspora, civil and economic rights movements, indigenous Chamorro communities in Micronesia, and HIV/AIDS outreach in San Francisco. The Puerto Rican Diaspora project also includes over 150 oral history recordings. The Civil Rights series documents voter registration and school desegregation rallies in New York City, 1964-1970, as well as housing and anti-poverty movements, primarily in California. Photographic subjects encompass Puerto Ricans, African Americans, and indigenous peoples, as well as whites and racially mixed people. The professional papers include files related to activism, research and writings, exhibits, teaching, and publicity. The earliest dated item is a 1946 essay by Espada, "What democracy means to me." He received his B.A.,1906, and M.A., 1911, at Trinity College, Hartford, CT, and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, 1920. Cowper also received an L.H.D, from Trinity College in 1956. He was the author of, The Sources, Date and Style of Ille et Galeron, by Gautier d'Arras, (1922), and other works. Cowper was a professor of Romance Languages, Trinity College, Durham, NC, 1918-1924, Duke University, 1924-1952. He married Mary O. Thompson, (1881-1968) in 1909. Dr. Cowper died in Durham on January 24, 1978. There were no children. Collection of 143 stereographic images of areas in southeastern China, taken by an amateur photographer and American lighting engineer Frederick B. Nightingale from 1920 to 1921, while he traveled on business as a representative of General Electric. Nightingale's photographs are of value not only for the image content, which includes street scenes, vendors, modes of transportation, shrines, temples, pagodas, monasteries, towers, and landscapes, but also for his lengthy contextual commentary written on the back of each card. The majority of the images were taken in Hangzhou (referred to as Hangchow), Suzhou (Soochow), Mount Putuo island (Pu-tu), and Shanghai, China, but there are also a few images from other cities (Ningbo, Chang'an, and Harinen?), and a set of 11 images were taken in Japan. Chiefly to Colonel Walpole from British diplomats and military officials concerning the conduct and training of the British Osmanli Cavalry, an irregular regiment of Moslem horsemen from the Turkish provinces known as Bashi-Bazouks. Walpole was on a special mission to Syria and the regiment was being recruited to serve in the Crimean War. Some letters also refer to the interaction between Turkish and British officers. Other letters concern Colonel W. F. S. Beatson, who had been placed in charge of recruiting the contingent of Bashi-Bazouks and was then relieved of his duties. List of letters at the end.

Papers contain letters from Holliday while a student at Yale University, 1846; papers relating to the 33rd Virginia Regiment, which Holliday raised and commanded during the Civil War; letters concerning the International Exhibition held in Philadelphia in 1876, at which Holliday served as a commissioner from Virginia; and letters and papers relating to Holliday's election as governor in 1877; and letters from his term as governor, for the most part dealing with routine political and administrative matters. Also includes printed matter and scrapbooks of clippings and letter books created while Holliday was a student at Yale and at the University of Virginia, 1845-1849, and as governor of Virginia, 1878-1879; and four record books concerning Holliday's legal work.

Frederic N. Cleaveland papers, 1938-1983 0.5 Linear Feet 500 Items

Frederic N. Cleaveland (1915–2005) served as assistant dean of men at Duke University from 1937-1941 and as provost and professor of political science from 1971–1979. In the interim, he was a professor of political science and researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was educated at Duke (AB and MA in history) and Princeton (MA and PhD in politics). His papers contain correspondence from colleagues in the academic community in relation to his career and professional/community involvement. It also contains photographs, employment files, various handwritten speeches and manuscripts. Materials ange in date from 1938-1983.

Fred Panzer was Vice President of the Tobacco Institute from 1971 to 1980. The Tobacco Institute was founded in 1958 by twelve U.S. tobacco companies, whose interests it represented. This collection contains materials from Fred Panzer's career at the Tobacco Institute from 1950 to 1981. Collection also includes materials from 1983 to 2001. It also includes materials related to Jewish students at Duke, the discussion around a mikveh in the Freeman Center, Hillel-Center for Jewish Life relations, the merging of the Center for Jewish Life and Duke Hillel, the Chronicle Holocaust ad controversy, and events on campus.

Free to Dance: The African-American Presence in Modern Dance was a three-part television documentary co-produced by the American Dance Festival and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in association with Thirteen/WNET New York. The series aired on PBS' Great Performances: Dance in America in 2001. It chronicled the role of African-American choreographers and dancers in the development of modern dance as an American art form. The collection includes film, video, sound recordings, oral histories, interview transcripts, business records, photographs, clippings, and research materials created or collected during the production of the three-part television documentary Free to Dance.

Freewater Productions Films, 1967-2003 and undated 55 Linear Feet

Freewater Films is a student-run programming committee within the Duke University Union (DUU) responsible for both screening and producing films. Film exhibitions have included weekly and summer series, as well as special event screenings featuring particular directors, actors, or genres. As a film production resource, Freewater has provided grants of film stock, equipment, processing, lab work, and technical instruction to members of the Duke community. The collection includes paper records and various film and tape elements produced by Duke students in the making of their original films. Formats include 35mm film, 16mm film, 8mm film, Betacam SP cassettes, audio cassettes, VHS cassettes, DAT tapes, as well as DVDs. The collection also includes some paper documentation associated with particular films, as well as publicity materials and subject files. Film topics include North Carolina environmental issues, poverty in Durham, political rallies, faculty interviews, campus construction, and student performances. Also included are fictional films on psychological, philosophical, or romantic themes, which feature familiar campus locations such as Perkins Library, the Duke Gardens, the Chapel, or the Duke Hospital. The collection also includes compilation tapes of entries from the annual Hal Kammerer Film Competition, as well as film experiments undertaken during Freewater film workshops. The collection is organized chronologically, then alphabetically by film title. In cases where the creators had grouped multiple reels of a particular film into a small box or a can, these groupings were denoted as reel 1-3 of 3, etc. Where available, synposes written on film cans were summarized and included in this finding aid. The majority of these synposes were written by Freewater Productions participant Benjamin Epps.

French Advertising Display Binders, approximately 1950s-1960s 2.0 Linear Feet

Three binders of black-and-white and color photographs of a variety of products and services available in mid-20th century France. Photographs largely depict packaging and point-of-sale displays with some photographs of retail spaces and trade show displays. No explanatory text accompanies the photographs. Creator of the binders is unknown; however there are photographs showing a Publicis exhibit or office display. Product types depicted include alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (beer and liqueurs), Cigarettes, cosmetics and toilet preparations including feminine hygiene, food, household appliances, non-prescription drugs and remedies, and transportation. Companies represented include Boeing, Buitoni, Chesebrough-Pond's, Cinzano, Coca-Cola, Colgate-Palmolive, Evian (Danone), Frigeco, Frigidaire, Gillette, Gitane (Imperial Tobacco), Helena Rubinstein, Kleenex (Kimberly-Clark), Maizena (Knorr), Nestle (Vittel, Nescafe), Nivea (Beiersdorf), P.J.
