Woolworth's was a discount retail chain founded by Frank W. Woolworth in 1879 in Lancaster, Pa. now doing business as Foot Locker, Inc. Collection is comprised of a photograph album depicting shop window and department store floor displays featured at the Spring Convention of the Woolworth Chicago District. Displays feature a variety of goods including candies and confections, cosmetics, sewing supplies, publishing and printing, and women's clothing. Companies represented include American Colortype, Luxor, Maybelline, Merrill Publishing, National Candy, Regensteiner, Revlon (Cutex), Spool Cotton (Coats & Clark), Standard Oil, and Whitman Publishing. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

F.W. Woolworth was a discount variety/department store founded in 1879 by Frank Winfield Woolworth in Lancaster, Pa. Collection consists of 15 black-and-white photographs of a Woolworth's storefront, window displays and interior images of store fixtures and merchandise display cases. Some of the photographs are stamped as the work of the Hammond Studio of Lewiston, Maine. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Gaess Outdoor was a family-owned outdoor advertising company founded in the 1930s in northern New Jersey, serving the New Jersey-Metropolitan New York market. It was acquired in 1997 by Universal Outdoor, a subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications, Inc. The Gaess Outdoor Advertising Photographs collection spans the decades of the 1950s and 1960s and includes black-and-white photographs and negatives of painted and blank billboard structures, locations, proposed locations and competitors' billboards. Clients include Budweiser (Anheuser-Busch), Cities Service (Citgo), Gulf Oil, Schaefer and Schlitz. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

George Gage (1831-1903) and his wife Sarah Marshall Ely (1834-1909) lived in Beaufort, S.C. during the Reconstruction Era. George was a civil engineer who held various positions for the town of Beaufort. Sarah worked as a teacher in the Freedmen's Bureau schools. This collection consists of a journal written by Sarah and three letterbooks of outgoing correspondence by George.

ALS. Responding to an inquiry by Pleadwell, as related by the recipient of the letter, Gage discusses the Legion, an organization for medical men who served in the army during the war.

Thomas M. Gallie served as Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Computer Science Program at Duke University, and as leader of Triangle Universities Computation Center and the N.C. Educational Computing Services initiatives. The Gallie papers include correspondence, memoranda, reports, clippings, financial records, and grant proposals. Major subjects include the Duke University Department of Mathematics, the Department of Computer Science, N.C. Educational Computing Services, Triangle Universities Computation Center, computing at Duke University, computing in medical services, and computerized phonetic transcriptions. Materials range in date from 1955-1972.

Resident of Ledyard, Conn. Collection comprises an account and commonplace book maintained by Gallup between 1857 and 1859. Gallup began using the item as an account book for "expenses while in the employ of Henry Bill, Norwich, Conn." during a trip to Chicago from 7 Apr 1857 to 20 Jan 1858 (pp. 3-6). Expenses noted included fares for travel, board, washing, omnibuses, etc. He also maintained records of his personal account with Bill (pp. 26-27) which he marked as settled on 27 Jan 1857. Despite these accounts, the nature of his employment is unclear. Gallup also used the item as a commonplace book, where he recorded such information as his weight, state and road taxes, the amounts of his shares held in whaling and other ventures (p. 39), lists of sundry expenses (pp. 42-43), instructions for calculating weights and measures, as well as his church attendance (Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist), notes from a lecture on anatomy and physiology by Dr. Weiting at Metropolitan Hall in Chicago (19 Apr 1857), and lists of letters written. The final entry in the piece is noted on the inside back cover, for cash in funds, [bills?], and change, on 2 Jan 1859.

The Sidney D. Gamble collection consists primarily of contact sheets, hand-colored glass slides, 35mm duplicate slides, contact prints, negatives, and other photographic formats documenting Gamble's four visits to China from 1908 to 1932. In total, there are over 5,000 unique images in the collection depicting urban and rural life, economic conditions, public events, agriculture, religious statuary, architecture, and the countryside. In addition to photographs of China, the collection contains a handful of images captured by Gamble from Japan and Korea and images captured by David Gamble in the western United States, circa 1906. Also included are artifacts, audiovisual materials, including moving images captured by Gamble in China from 1926 to 1933, scrapbooks, a small selection of Gamble's personal papers, and records of the Sidney D. Gamble Foundation for China Studies, which relate to the exhibition of Gamble's photographs in China and the United States, 1980s-2000s. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.
