Hermann Borchardt papers, 1918-1960s 4.2 Linear Feet 3200 Items

German writer and intellect who escaped a Nazi concentration camp and immigrated to New York in 1937. Collection consists of correspondence between Borchardt and several friends, including several news clippings and photographs. Subjects discussed include the emergence of Nazi Germany under Hitler and the origins and consequences of World War II. The remainder of the collection consists of literary manuscripts, drafts, and notes from Borchardt's writings, as well as some correspondence and newspaper clippings. Many of the materials are not in order and are in poor condition. Writings are in German and English.

Herman Snow papers, 1844-1892 0.1 Linear Feet (41 items)

Herman Snow was a Unitarian minister and spiritualist, as well as a religious book and newspaper agent. Collection comprises 41 items, including 36 letters written to Snow and five manuscripts. Many of the items were annotated by Herman Snow in purple pencil. There are two letters concerning the First Ecclesiastical Society of Brooklyn, Connecticut, and Snow's two-page handwritten memorial of his service there, 1845-1846; two 1866 letters on a white school in North Carolina and the "Freedmen's & Union Society, and the establishment of white and freedman schools in Wilmington, N.C.;" letters from spiritualists Seldes J. Finney, William Denton, A. E. Newton, and H. H. Brown; a 1888 letter from Mary Gunning regarding spiritualism and science; an 1892 letter containing a prospectus for the New World, a religious serial; as well as an 1892 letter from Richard Hodgson of the American Branch of the Society for Psychical Research. Manuscripts include an 1850 resolution for Snow's separation from the Rockford Unitarian congregation, the 1863 certificate issued to Snow by the Harvard University Theological School, and a letter of introduction authorizing Snow as a business agent for the CHRISTIAN EXAMINER.

Hersey Everett Spence papers, 1794; 1904-1973 2.88 Linear Feet 1000 Items

Hersey Everett Spence was a minister, educator, and writer. After graduating from Trinity College in 1908 he spent ten years in the pastorate before returning to his alma mater in 1918 as Professor of Religious Education and Biblical Literature. The collection contains correspondence, writings (poems, plays, eulogies by Smith), clippings, a sound recording, and other printed material reflecting the opinions and career of H.E. Spence. The materials in the collection range in date from 1794; 1904-1973; with the bulk of the materials dating from 1938 to 1970.

Hertha Sponer papers, 1917-1967 6 Linear Feet 3000 Items

Hertha Sponer, 1895-1968, was a German physicist who immigrated to the United States and came to Duke University in 1936, where she became the first woman on its Physics Department faculty. She conducted research and taught at Duke until 1965, supervising thirty-five masters and doctoral degree graduates. The Hertha Sponer Papers span the years 1917-1967 and comprise the correspondence, research, speeches, writings, and teaching materials of German physicist Hertha Sponer, who in 1936 became the first woman appointed to the faculty of the Duke University Department of Physics. The collection primarily documents her American career, especially her work in the areas of chemical physics, spectrum analysis, and molecular spectroscopy. Arranged in five series: Correspondence, Printed Materials, Professional Files, Research Files, and Writings and Speeches. The Correspondence Series covers the final two decades of her career, from the late 1940s to 1967, and primarily consists of letters about research with her numerous collaborators and co-authors. Some of her final letters discuss death of her husband, physicist James Franck, in 1964, and also allude to the death that same year of her Duke Physics Department associate and fellow German refugee, Hedwig Kohn. The Printed Materials Series holds offprints and reprints of Sponer's articles from the 1930s-1960s, plus a few articles by Franck. Sponer's teaching and administrative files, including correspondence with graduate students, appear in the Professional Files. The Research Files make up the largest series in the collection; these files document her research on many topics and articles and also contain much of the collection's correspondence. The Writings and Speeches Series gathers several papers and talks from the last half-dozen years of Sponer's professional career.

In 1963 John Cotter reformed the firm's assets and intellectual property into the True Value Company, a cooperative that licensed the True Value brand to independent retailers. Collection consists of issues of the dealer sales periodical True Value Planned Selling, along with materials pertaining to Christmas sales merchandising and promotional displays for hardware, toys, and household furnishings. Hieraume Peyre sketchbook and commonplace book, 1620-1640 0.5 Linear Feet (1 item)

Hieraume Peyre (or Hierosme Peire) was a French architect-builder, originally from Saint-Chamond, who lived and worked in the area around Saint-Etienne, Isère, Grenoble, and Tullins. Sketchbook and commonplace book compiled over two decades (approximately 1620-1640) by the French architect-builder Hieraume Peyre. The manuscript is in ink and color [14.9 x 19.3 cm], (187) ff., with some leaves showing an earlier pagination that might indicate the loss of some leaves, but with no clear interruption of continuity in the text, copiously illustrated (265 of 375 pages carry some form of illustration, and 161 of these are full-page). Bound in early tinted vellum. The manuscript provides information on both the practical and theoretical concerns of early-modern engineers and architectural practitioners.

The Highlands Institute for American Religious and Philosophical Thought (HIARPT) was established in Highlands, North Carolina, as a result of the expansion of the American Journal of Theology and Philosophy. The Women's Dialogue began in 1992 as a means to discuss theology and philosophy from a feminist perspective. It hosts annual seminars and monthly discussion groups on feminist theology. Collection (2010-0173) (500 items; 1.2 lin. ft.; dated 1992-2010) includes seminar files and materials from Women's Dialogue seminars, historical perspectives gathered by the Women's Dialogue members for their 10th anniversary, correspondence between members, information on speakers, finances, and membership rosters. Patricia Boyd's files, a separate series, contains additional seminar materials and other supplemental files on speakers and programs. Hilrie Shelton Smith began his long association with Duke University in 1931 as Professor of Religious Education. He remained at Duke until his retirement in 1963. He H. Shelton Smith was an expert on American religious thought and was considered the dean of American ecclesiastical thought and history. His collection contains material pertaining to his life including materials such as Smith's correspondence with colleagues; the correspondence and printed reviews concerning his individual books; and his sermons, addresses, and lectures. Materials in the collection date from 1941-1983.

Hilton James Taylor (1923-2017) was a Black American minister originally from Pike County, Georgia. He served in the U.S. Army's 412th Engineer Dump Truck Company during World War II. This collection centers around John Wetmore Hinsdale (1843-1921), a successful lawyer and businessman who served in the Confederate army. His son, John Wetmore Hinsdale, Jr., was also a lawyer and politician in North Carolina. Correspondence, Civil War diaries, newspapers clippings, C.S.A. War Dept. records book, and other papers, of a family of lawyers, of Raleigh and Fayetteville, N.C. Includes material on Confederate generals Theophilus Hunter Holmes, William Dorsey Pender, and James Johnston Pettigrew; schools, education, railroad taxation, and legislation, government and politics in North Carolina, particularly during the 1930s; and medical practice in Virginia ca. 1900. Hippolyte Arnoux Egypt photographs, 1860-1869 1.8 Linear Feet

Collection comprises 94 albumen photographs (22 x 28 cm) of Egypt, mounted in two volumes. For the photographs, Hippolyte Arnoux teamed up with the Zangaki photographic studio, probably during the 1860s. Images include mosques at Assan, Hambro, and El Azhar, along with the Palace of Shubra, the Cairo Citadel, Luxor, Thebes, Colossi of Memnon, Edfu, Philae, Karnak, and other monuments and temples, as well as many ancient Egyptian bas reliefs and sculpture. Arnoux's photographs of the Suez Canal are also present. The compositions often include every day Egyptians or street scenes. Many of the photographs were numbered and labeled in French on the negative; others feature brief, handwritten French captions in black ink. The photographs in these volumes were likely selected by an unknown purchaser to be bound together.

Hiram Barker papers, 1857-1895 3 Linear Feet 1880 Items

Prominent businessman and banker from Farmington, New Hampshire; established and managed multiple business investments in New Hampshire, the Dakota Territory, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Minnesota in the late 19th century. Collection consists chiefly of business correspondence dating from circa 1871-1886, almost all directed to Hiram Barker in New Hampshire, although in some cases Barker was the author. Correspondents include managers of Barker's businesses and investments in the Western territories and states of Dakota, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Minnesota, and other firms with whom Barker did business. Topics revolve around business matters and trends in New Hampshire, the Western states and territories, including but not limited to real estate loans and investments, land investments, banking and loans, financial difficulties such as loan defaults, and ranching or farming in the Western states listed above. A smaller group of letters concern personal and family matters of both the Barker and Hayes family, into which Barker had married. Arranged by state in alphabetical order.

Hiram Earl Myers papers, 1910 - 1977 4.5 Linear Feet

Hiram Earl Myers was a white clergyman, theologian, and educator. He was ordained as a minister in the N.C. Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (1918) and was an active member as pastor and theologian. In 1926, Myers joined the Duke University faculty in as professor of biblical literature. He served as Chairman of the Department of Religion (1934-1936) and as Director of Undergraduate Studies in Religion (1937-1957). The collection consists of correspondence; texts of sermons and Sunday School lessons; prayers given in Duke Chapel; records of sermons, baptisms, and marriages; notes on sermon topics; photographs; pamphlets; blueprints; and other printed material. Major subjects include Myers' activities as a clergyman, his reflections on theological issues, and his involvement in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. English.

Collection consists of historical medical instruments and artifacts, art objects, realia, and other three-dimensional objects related to the history of medicine, primarily originating from Europe and the United States, but including some artifacts from China and Japan. Ranging in age from the late 16th to the early 21st centuries, objects include medical kits and pharmaceutical items (often in the original cases and bags); equipment used in amputation, obstetrics, opthalmology, surgery, urology, neurology, early electrical therapies, and in research and diagnostic settings; instructional objects such as anatomical models and figurines; and other objects such as apothecary jars, cupping glasses, infant feeders, a bas-relief memento mori, and fetish figures. There are many models of microscopes, ear trumpets, and stethoscopes, dating from the 17th to the 20th century. Includes some original medicines, such as pills and capsules. History of Medicine oversize print materials, 1628-1856 and undated 0.5 Linear Feet 17 Items

The Duke University History of Medicine Collections acquire, preserve, interpret, and make available for research and instruction, materials documenting the history of medicine, biomedical science, health and disease in the global context of the Western medical tradition. The collection was assembled by Duke Medical Center Library staff, and contains newspapers and other oversize print materials related to the history of medicine. The earliest date comes from a modern reproduction in black-and-white of an anatomical treatise from 1628. Newspaper issues from the 18th and 19th centuries carry advertisements related to physicians' services, medical practices, and medicinal products. Single sheets from the London Illustrated News concern the activities of Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War, 1855-1856, and are illustrated with large black-and-white engravings; one issue reproduces a piece of music with verses praising Nightingale. The items were acquired from various sources as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Assembled by the staff of the Duke University Medical Library, the History of Medicine Picture File holds thousands of small and large images organized into series for individuals, places, and subjects related to the history of medicine and medical practice. The great majority portray notable physicians, scientists, naturalists, philosophers, and other individuals with important links to medicine. Places featured include hospitals and other institutions of medicine, and scenes in specific locations related to events in medical history. The subject categories cover many topics, with the largest groups including advertising, anatomy, caricatures, cartoons, pediatrics, physicians, and surgery. Predominant formats are engravings, lithographs, print materials (such as posters, clippings, and postcards), and many modern photographic reproductions of older works; there are also albumen photographs, negatives, slide reproductions, and other image formats found throughout the files. H. J. M. Shaw (b. 1876) was an English mining engineer and businessman who spent much of his time in China between 1902 and 1909. This collection consists of the diary of H. J. M. Shaw (b. 1876), an English mining engineer and businessman. The diary covers the period 1902-1909. The diary entries are in two distinct parts: June through August, 1902 during the start of a trip to China and April 1908 to March 1909 starting with Shaw travelling back to England with stops in Japan and Canada. Subsequent entries describe his vacation trips while back home including time spent in Ireland. The final entries describe his trip back to China and his daily activities once in Weihan, China.

H. Lee Waters Film collection, 1936-2005, bulk 1936-1942 51.5 Linear Feet 258 Reels

Born in Caroleen, North Carolina in 1902, studio photographer Herbert Lee Waters supplemented his income from 1936 to 1942 by traveling across North Carolina and parts of Virginia, Tennessee, and South Carolina to film the people of small communities. He collaborated with local movie theaters to screen his films, which he called Movies of Local People. It is estimated that Waters produced films across 118 communities, visiting some of them multiple times. The H. Lee Waters Film Collection dates from 1936 to 2005 and is comprised primarily of 16mm black-and-white and color reversal original motion picture films created by Waters during the filming of the Movies of Local People series. The collection, arranged alphabetically by town name, also includes various preservation and access elements created over the years from the original footage: 16mm internegatives, 16mm screening prints, 3/4-inch Umatic videotape, Betacam SP videotape, Digital Betacam videotape, VHS videotape, DVD discs, and high resolution digital files including 2K preservation video copies. The collection contains a small number of papers and physical objects related to Waters' film making, including: a photocopy of two log books (encompassed in one volume) maintained by Waters to record financial and business information during the filming of Movies of Local People; photocopied and original advertisements for screenings of Waters' films; photocopies of Waters' notes, receipts, and correspondence concerning film sales; related ephemera; copy of a 2005 master's thesis written on the films of H. Lee Waters; home movies made by Waters from the 1930s to the 1950s; and oral histories with Mary Waters Spaulding and Tom Waters, the children of H. Lee Waters.

Frank, and Julian Abele were the firm's main designers. Frank Clyde Brown, S.W. Myatt and A.C. Lee were administrators of construction at Duke University during this time. Some of the buildings designed by the firm are the Duke University Chapel, the Allen Administration Building, Cameron Indoor Stadium, Baldwin Auditorium, the East Campus Union Building, the East Campus Central Heating Plant Complex, the Carr Building (formerly known as the Class Room Building), the Medical School and Hospital, the Nurses' Home, the Law School, the School of Religion, the Chemistry Building, and the Botany and Biology Building. The firm also designed the Giles, Alspaugh, Pegram, Bassett, and Brown residence halls (formerly known as Dormitories 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively). Included in the collection are blueprints and printed material relating to the planning and construction of buildings at Duke University from 1924 to 1958.

The photographer included description written onto the negative. The back is stamped with the Lloyd Photo Co. address.

Howard Atwood Kelly was a surgeon, gynecologist, professor, author, collector of medical memorabilia, and founder of the Kensington Hospital in Philadelphia; he served as the first professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine. Among his interests was the life of Florence Nightingale and her memorialization through images. The Howard Kelly Collection of Florence Nightingale Prints and Photographs represents the collecting efforts of Howard Atwood Kelly, a surgeon, professor, author, and collector of medical memorabilia. The collection comprises 60 images and other memorializations associated with Florence Nightingale, 19th century nurse and healthcare reformer. Image formats include engravings, photographs (some of which are albumens), lithographs, mezzo tints, prints, and postcards; in addition, there are photographic and slide reproductions of drawings, lithographs, engravings, crayon drawings, paintings, and sculptures. Almost all the images are mounted on cardstock boards. Portrayals of Nightingale span her adult lifetime; there are images of her during her early career as a nurse in Britain, and providing nursing care for wounded soldiers in Turkey during the Crimean War. There are also images of her birth and death places. Also included are one piece of popular sheet music (1857) and typed explanatory notes. Reproductions also accompany many of the images. Arranged in rough chronological order by date of publication or creation. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

The Howard Scott Papers span the years 1921-1984, although the bulk of materials covers the period from the 1930s to the 1950s, documenting Scott's career in outdoor advertising as a billboard designer and graphic artist. The papers include correspondence (including two letters from Norman Rockwell), newspaper and magazine clippings, awards, and school yearbooks relating to Scott's personal and professional life, in addition to photographs, sketches, lithographs and reprints of outdoor advertising images for clients such as Amoco, Chesterfield (Liggett and Myers), Esso and Mobil oil products, DeSoto, Ford, and Nash automobiles, H.J. Heinz Co., Lever Brothers, Pabst and Schlitz beers, World War II-era programs such as the USO and Navy recruitment, and the 1939-1940 World's Fair. Howland-Mcintosh Family papers, 1713-1997 (bulk 1830-1989) 6.3 Linear Feet 2,147 Items

Families originally from Carteret and Moore Counties, N.C. Correspondence; legal files, including deeds and wills; photographs; many genealogical materials; financial papers; postcards; paper currency; two scrapbooks; and school papers, all relating to the Howland and the McIntosh families from Carteret, Durham, and Moore Counties, N.C. Photographs include tintypes, albumen prints, and one daguerrotype. Many legal files pertain to a lengthy court case involving the transfer of family property on Shackleford Banks, N.C. to the federal government. Oversize materials include aerial photographs and land surveys of Shackleford Banks and other family properties, and photostats of early deeds. Though several photographs and all the currency date from the Civil War, the only other original documentation on the families' Civil War activities is a signed oath of allegiance to the Union dated 1865, and a few letters referring at length to the circumstances surrounding the confiscation of one Howland's property in Beaufort, N.C. during the war, and his attempts at legal restitution. William F. Howland (1876-1951) married Mary Elizabeth McIntosh (1878-1964) in 1903. The collection contains much of their correspondence. Other correspondence includes World War I letters from a McIntosh son, Leland Carson. The addition (04-129)(25 items, 1.5 lin. ft.; dated [1870s]-[1960s]) consists primarily of materials, including a scrapbook, photo album, letters, and travel journals, kept by Mary Howland Dawson from the 1950 "Youth Caravan to Germany" sponsored by the Methodist Conference of North Carolina. Also includes two family photograph albums, with images dating back to the 1870s; clippings about various family members; and an historical sketch of Salem United Methodist Church in Garland, N.C. This addition is unprocessed and is not represented in the finding aid.

Hubert H. and Leona T. Hayes were actors, authors, and partners in the founding and production of the Mountain Youth Jamboree music and dance festival in Asheville, N.C. (1940s-1973). Collection comprises personal and business correspondence; plays, stories, articles, and minstrel scripts written by Hubert Hayes and others, as well as publicity, ephemera, production records, and photographs relating to the Asheville, N.C. Mountain Youth Jamboree (1940s-1973), to programs at Asheville's City Auditorium; and to the production of Hayes' outdoor drama about Daniel Boone, Thunderland, and plays such as Tight Britches. There are also photographs, chiefly black-and-white, of family and friends, actors in blackface, the Trinity College (Durham, N.C.) football team in 1922 or 1923, author Thomas Wolfe, 1937, and entertainers of the time. Other materials include a photograph album of Hubert's youth (1920s), and many scrapbooks documenting Humbert and Leona's theater and entertainment work, and Leona Hayes's career and her close association with Duke University Libraries and its director, Benjamin Powell. The materials speak to the history of Asheville, N.C., western N.C. life and social customs, and Appalachian and African American cultures as expressed in popular entertainment of the 1920s-1960s.

Huck Gutman papers on the Silent Vigil, 1968 0.3 Linear Feet

Stanley "Huck" Gutman received his master's and doctoral degrees from Duke University in 1967 and 1971. Gutman had a career in academia at the University of Vermont from 1971 to 2018 and in politics as advisor and chief of staff for Bernie Sanders. Following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Duke University students organized a peaceful protest for racial equality in April 1968. Up to 1,400 students slept on the Chapel Quad, food services and housekeeping employees went on strike, and most students boycotted the dining halls in support of the employees. The collection contains materials related to the Duke Silent Vigil of 1968 including a notebook of handwritten notes and transcripts from committee meetings. Also consists of a partial narrative of the Silent Vigil, photocopies of memos from Duke administration, and a copy of the pamphlet, "The Duke Trustees and Labor."

Family with publishing connections in Maryland. Ezekiel Hughes was editor of the HERALD in Frederick, Maryland. Jeremiah Hughes owned the NILES NATIONAL REGISTER, and other publishing concerns. Principally correspondence of the Hughes and Gray familes of Baltimore, Annapolis, and Frederick, Md. Pervasive topics include personal and family matters, Md. and national politics, and religion. Topics occurring less frequently include finances related to the publishing business and the marketing of volumes, the Civil War, city missions for the poor, dealings with Native Americans, and Communism. The collection also includes 31 volumes of notes and diaries compiled by Ellis Hughes, chief anatomist at the University of Md., over the period of roughly 1830-1865. His 1865 diary makes reference to Lincoln's assassination and the capture of Jefferson Davis. The remaining five volumes were compiled by Jeremiah's daughter Susanna Hughes, who herself entertained literary aspirations. These volumes are a mixture of diary, devotional, literary copybook, scrapbook, and original composition.

Hugh Gladney Grant papers, 1847-1939 15 Linear Feet

Hugh G. Grant was an American diplomat originally from Alabama. He served as U.S. Minister to Albania, 1935-1939. With the exception of his diary, these papers are largely Grant's correspondence and other records from his service as U.S. Minister to Albania, 1935-1939. His extensive diary covers this period, but most of it, as does some of his correspondence and other records, covers the period (1927-1933) while he was secretary to Sen. Hugo L. Black. Other topics covered in detail include the roles of Senators Heflin and Black, Alabama and National Democratic politics, the Depression, particularly in Alabama, the Bonus March on Washington in 1932, Albania and its King Zog, administration of the U.S. Legation in that country, and the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. In his diary, he gives opinions of many people, including Senator Black, Neville Chamberlain, King Zog, and Charles Lindbergh. Between 1933 and 1935, he was in the Division of Western European Affairs in the Department of State, and that service is also covered in this collection. A collection of photographs of Albania, various other places, and some family photos are included. There are a few clippings, and some personal correspondence of Grant and of Mrs. Hugh G. Grant.

Hugh Mangum was a commercial portrait photographer from Durham, North Carolina. Collection comprises 937 glass plate negatives and printed black-and-white photographs taken by Hugh Mangum from about 1890 to 1922 as he traveled a rail circuit through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia and in photography studios he and partners established in Durham, N.C., and Roanoke, Pulaski, and East Radford, Virginia. Localities known to have been visited by Mangum in N.C. include Winston-Salem, High Point, Raleigh, Reidsville, Lexington, Durham, and Greensboro; in Virginia, Christiansburg, Martinsville, East Radford, and Pulaski. The images are chiefly individual and group portraits of mostly unidentified women, children, and men, either in unidentified studio settings or outdoors. Most are white men and women, but there are also many African Americans and others who may be multi-racial. Hugh Mangum and his wife are present in several images. There are several street scenes identified as Radford, Virginia, as well as Warrenton (probably N.C.), and Christiansburg, Virginia. Some images feature houses, barns, mills, outdoor social gatherings, and animals. The last dated photograph in the collection is a mounted print of Mangum's body in an open casket, 1922. Of the photographic prints, there are 55 prints made from selected negatives, and 50 inkjet digital prints from a 2012 exhibit. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

"Hum Sab Ayodhya" exhibit panels on the Ayodhya region and destruction of the mosque, and related protest posters, Uttar Pradesh, India, after 1993-2000 3.5 Linear Feet (3 oversize folders; 1 box)

Collection consists of 37 large paper sheets bearing reduced-size reproductions of 83 panels that formed a 1993 exhibit narrating the history, culture, and customs of the Aydhoya region in India, now part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. It was organized by the curator Ram Rahman and SAHMAT (Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust), a New Delhi-based collective of Indian artists, writers, and activists against communalism and violent extremism. Also includes 47 posters protesting extremist violence, created by the same organization. The exhibit illustrates the origins of the Babri Masjid mosque complex and its destruction by Hindu extremists in December 1992. The black-and-white and color reproductions, most without captions, include 16th century paintings; regional maps; plans and large color photographs of the mosque complex; details of sculptures, scripts, and reliefs; reproductions of English accounts; and photographs of area inhabitants as well as individuals associated with regional politics. There are also several texts in Hindi. The sheets measure approximately 28 1/4 x 38 1/4 inches. Posters are sized approximately 17 x 21 3/4 inches. Detailed information on the original 1993 exhibit and its historical context is found in a 2012 publication on the exhibit, available in the Duke Libraries.

Materials from the branch of the Hypes family that descended from Henry Hypes of Xenia, Ohio: Samuel Henry Hypes (1826-1917); his son, William Findlay Hypes; his grandson, Samuel Loomis Hypes; and his great-grandson, William P. Hypes. Collection includes a wide range of material from the Hypes family, particularly William Findlay Hypes, Samuel Loomis Hypes, and William P. Hypes. William Findlay Hypes' materials highlight his career at Marshall Fields and Co. of Chicago and his service as President of the Y.M.C.A. of Chicago, with emphasis on his family's world tour on behalf of the Y.M.C.A. in 1924-1925. Hundreds of postcards and photographs collected by the family are contained in the papers, including images from India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), China, Europe, Egypt, and many more places, most unlabeled. Some material from Samuel Loomis Hypes' army service during World War I is also included, the most noteworthy being 24 black and white photographs featuring crowds awaiting the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and the shipping of troops back to the United States, including photographs of African American soldiers. Materials from William P. Hypes relate to his work with the Y.M.C.A. in the mid-twentieth century. The family's research into their genealogy and family history, unidentified family photographs, and smaller amounts of correspondence and material from other family members are also included.

Independent Aid, Inc. records, 1934-1954 6.4 Linear Feet 314 Items

Independent Aid, Inc. was the first charitable foundation established by Doris Duke, daughter of businessman and philanthropist James Buchanan (J.B.) Duke. It was incorporated in Delaware in October, 1934. Although Miss Duke had limited direct involvement with Independent Aid, its disbursements reflected her persistent interests in the welfare of women and children, education, social work and mental health, and early family planning efforts. The foundation’s daily operations were administered largely by Marian Paschal, who served as Secretary until her death in 1946, and by her successor, Georgea T. Furst. Independent Aid, Inc. became the Doris Duke Foundation in 1951. The collection spans the years 1934 to 1954, beginning with the establishment of Independent Aid, Inc. and including administrative entries through the first years of the Doris Duke Foundation. Journals, cashbooks, ledgers, and minute books comprise the majority of the collection; these detail contributions to the foundation as well as disbursements. The remaining materials include correspondence, the foundation’s original by-laws, federal tax forms, financial records and lists of stock holdings, and memoranda documenting daily operations.

The East India Company was an English joint-stock company formed in 1600 that ruled portions of South Asia until 1858. This collection contains over 55 documents including miscellaneous legal papers, correspondence, receipts, and extracts largely relating to the East India Company's operations and employees; three documents relating to Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, the Nabob of Arcot (1745-1795); manuscripts relating to Sir Robert Chambers (1737-1803), who traveled to India in 1774 as one of the first justices of the Supreme Court at Calcutta; and a petition written by the wife of Almas Ali Khan, an important administrator in Awadh and one of the key figures in the trial of Warren Hastings. These manuscripts seem to have formerly been part of Sir Thomas Phillipps noted collection.

The records of the documentary project Indivisible: Stories of American Community span the dates 1988-2002. Through documentary photographs and oral histories, project records, videos, and other materials, the collection documents the social conditions in twelve American communities as well as the history of the project, which explored civil activism, struggle, and change in the following locations: the North Pacific Coast of Alaska; Ithaca, N.Y.; San Francisco, California; Navajo Nation, Arizona and New Mexico; Eau Claire, South Carolina; Delray Beach, Florida; Western North Carolina; Stony Brook, N.Y.; San Juan, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and the Yaak Valley, Montana. The photographers are Dawoud Bey, Bill Burke, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Lucy Capehart, Lynn Davis, Terry Evans, Lauren Greenfield, Joan Liftin, Reagan Louie, Danny Lyon, Sylvia Plachy, and Eli Reed. The project was sponsored by the Center for Documentary Studies of Duke University and the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, and co-directed by Tom Rankin and Trudi Stack. Informer Group advertisement--Largest Negro Circulation in the South!, 1943 1 items

The Informer Group was a publishing company for African American newspapers in the U.S. southeast, based in Houston, Tex. The advertisement appeared in v. 205, no. 1 (Oct. 1, 1943) issue of Printers' Ink publication and proclaimed "Largest Negro Circulation in the South" to encourage mainstream advertisers to place ads in the Houston Informer and other Informer Group newspapers. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Ingrid Bengis papers, 1930-2016 14 Linear Feet (10 boxes) 11 Megabytes (24 files)

Ingris Bengis was a white writer, poet, and fishmonger. This collection documents Bengis's life and work in New York City, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine. The collection includes drafts, poetry, and published works (including I Have Come Here to Be Alone and Metro Stop Dostoevsky). The bulk of this collection contains correspondence, including letters to and from Bengis, relating to her personal life; teaching; running Ingrid Bengis Seafood; and her 2003 court case regarding her Wooster Street Apartment in New York. Bengis's papers also include photographs of Bengis and her travels, clippings about Bengis as a writer and fishmonger, materials related to her teaching at St. Petersburg State University and Fulbright grant to Russia, as well as personal diaries, journals, and ledgers from her seafood business.

"Inside Kabul" audio recordings, 2021-2022 502 Megabytes (81 files)

"Inside Kabul" is an award-winning podcast produced originally by France Inter and directed by Caroline Gillet in collaboration with two young Afghan women, Marwa and Raha (aliases). The collection contains 80 unedited audio files recorded by Marwa and Raha between 2021-2022 after the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, that would later be used in the podcast, and one corresponding unedited transcript. Topics discussed by Marwa and Raha in these recordings include the erosion of women's rights, social norms and changes, relationships, safety and economic impacts, the refugee experience, and resettling overseas. Winner of the 2025 Human Rights Digital Storytelling Award. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive and the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Inter-Citizens Committee Records, 1960-1963 0.1 Linear Feet

The Inter-Citizens Committee of Birmingham, Alabama, was dedicated to promoting "mutual understanding through assimilating, interpreting, and communicating factual material affecting basic American rights in Alabama." It formed in April 1960 at Trinity Baptist Church. The collection consists of typescript documents produced by the ICC during the early 1960s. It includes the constitution and its by-laws; a fundraising circular; a copy of the Birmingham Manifesto, produced by the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights; and numbers 1-14, 16, 18-25, and 33-40 of the ICC's Documents on Human Rights in Alabama. The Documents on Human Rights in Alabama are reproduced typescripts, designed to circulate to government and political officials to alert them of human rights abuses, violence, and intimidation, largely committed by white people against African American people in Birmingham.
