"Santa and Me!" children's photograph campaign materials, 1946-1948 0.2 Linear Feet

Sarah Brown Capron letter, 1865 December 26, December 28. 0.1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Sarah Brown Capron was born in Lanesboro, Massachusetts, in 1828, the daughter of Henry Brown Hooker and Martha (Chickering) Hooker. The family subsequently moved to Falmouth, Massachusetts. Sarah graduated from Wheaton Seminary, and married William Capron on October 1, 1856. Over the course of their marriage, the Caprons had 3 children. On November 24, 1856, the Caprons sailed to Ceylon, India, as missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission. Arriving in Madras in March of 1857, they labored in Tirupuvanum and Mana Madura for the next sixteen years. Collection comprises a copy of a letter (10 pages) written by Sarah B. Capron in Mana Madura, India, to unidentified recipients on 1865 December 26 and 28.

Sarah Christianson is a photographer originally from North Dakota. This portfolio of 30 11x14 inch color chromogenic prints is from her project, "When the Landscape is Quiet Again: North Dakota's Oil Boom," which won the 2015 Archives of Documentary Art Award for Women Documentarians. Since 2012, Christianson has been documenting through her photographs the legacy of oil booms and busts in North Dakota and how the region's agrarian landscape and environment is changing again today, due to horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Sarah E. Goodwin needlework patterns, circa 1865-1898 and undated 0.4 Linear Feet Approx. 300 Items

Resident of South Berwick, Maine. The centerpiece of this collection is a late 19th century scrapbook belonging to Sarah E. Goodwin of Maine, into which manuscript and printed instructions and patterns for the creation of tapestries, collars, edging, capes, mittens, afghans, hoods, curtains, infant shoes, slippers, and other items were pasted and pinned. Collection also includes a commonplace book of knitting and crocheting patterns, home remedies for illnesses and diseases, and a variety of household tips, as well as poems, literary quotations, and miscellaneous lists of information; as well as a catalog for a Baptist church in South Berwick, Maine (1898), numerous patterns for embroidered monograms, and many loose patterns. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Sarah F. Martin illustrated manuscript memoir of Mary Cary Packard, R.N., and manuscript autobiography, 1863-1951, bulk 1863-1936 1.5 Linear Feet (2 boxes)

Mary Cary Packard (1858-1936) and Sarah F. (Florence) Martin (1864- ) were professional nurses trained Boston and based in Baltimore from 1887, where they managed the Robert Garrett Hospital for Children as well as the Robert Garret Sanitarium for Children in rural Mount Airy, Maryland. Collection comprises a 109-page manuscript memoir of Mary Packard's life, assembled by Sarah F. Martin around 1936, and a 20-page handwritten autobiography by Martin, 1940, wih a few photographs and booklets pasted in. The Packard memoir contains a detailed biography, 34 photographs, clippings, memorabilia, cards, and letters, all captioned in detail by Martin. The collection documents the lifelong friendship and professional lives of the two women, their family, friends and colleagues, and their Baltimore home, "Clovelly." Other topics include the history of Maryland's public health system and children's hospitals, and the genealogies of the Alden, Cary, Packard, and Parker families of eastern Massachusetts. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collection and the Bingham Center for Women and Women's History and Culture at Duke University.

Collection contain images related to two photography projects by Sarah Hoskins. The Homeplace series contains 250 11x14 inch silver gelatin prints documenting Hoskins' visits and relationships with rural African American communities in Kentucky, originally established by freedmen in the 19th century. Her photographs include community events and activities such as hog butchering, church services, family reunions, and gatherings of charity groups. The Rosenwald Schools series contains approximately 300 color digital images of schools for African Americans built during the first half of the 20th century through the Rosenwald foundation, as well as some portraits of former students in Kentucky, North Carolina and Alabama. The series also includes images of a Rosenwald foundation-funded apartment building in Chicago, Illinois. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Sarah J. Ewing diary, 1868 December 17-1869 July 17 0.1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Collection comprises a diary (49 pages) Sarah Ewing maintained in ink, focusing on the domestic abuse she suffered from her husband, including verbal and physical abuse. One entry also records her husband's arrest for an assault that took place outside the home. By the end of the diary, Sarah has left her husband in fear for her safety, taking with her the baby. After visiting the house in order to retrieve more clothing, she ends the diary with a note that she is not a thief, "I had never in my life before removed or taken away from H.H. [Haydon House] any articles of clothing or jewelry of any sort." Marginal notes made by an unidentified writer in pencil indicate that the diary may have been used in legal or other proceedings on her behalf.

Virginia-based writer Sarah Maitland began producing zines around 2001 and ran a zine distro for about three years. She was a founder of the Richmond Zine Fest which started in 2007. Approximately 220 titles from Sarah Maitland's personal zine collection, most dating between 1998 and 2008 and discussing a wide range of subjects. Also contains some material from Maitland's personal projects, as well as buttons, cassettes, stickers, and other ephemera.

Sarah Orne Jewett letters, 1877 June 15-circa 1890s 0.1 Linear Feet (2 items)

The Sarah Orne Jewett letters consist of two pieces of correspondence written by the author to an editor, Mr. Sawyer, and to Lucy Coffin. Sarah Orne Jewett was a well-known 19th century author whose fiction is set in her native rural Maine. In the first letter, Jewett declines to send Mr. Sawyer anything to print in the first issue of his magazine, as she has been ill and busy, and doesn't want to write something in a hurry, although she wishes him well with his new publication. The second is a condolence letter to Lucy Coffin of Newbury, Massachusetts on the loss of her father. The Coffins were a prominent Massachusetts family.

Sarah P. Duke Gardens records, 1926-2012 24.5 Linear Feet

The Gardens were a gift from Mary Duke Biddle in honor of her mother, Sarah P. Duke (Mrs. Benjamin N.). Construction began in 1932 and the site was open to the public in 1934. Ellen Shipman (1869-1950) designed the plans for both the construction and the plantings for the new gardens. Collection contains materials pertaining to the origins and activities of the Sarah P. Duke Gardens including planting plans, calendars, correspondence, feasibility studies, annual reports, a card catalog of plantings, and publicity. Materials in the collection date from 1926-2012.

Sara M. Evans is a Regents Professor Emeritus in the history department at the University of Minnesota. She specializes in American social and women's history of the 20th century. Collection consists of subject files, course materials, research files, publication materials, lectures, correspondence, project documentation, student course work and student activist work accumulated by Evans during her career as first a student, then a professor and historian, of women's history. Topics include feminism, minority women, religion, violence, civil rights, labor activism at Duke University, lesbianism, motherhood, feminist theology, employment, socialist feminism, Christian feminism, National Organization for Women, Organization of American Historians, and student activism. Collection contains materials used in the preparation of her publications, including Personal Politics. There are also lectures, academic correspondence, and administrative materials from her tenure at the University of Minnesota. Audiocassette tapes from a series of interviews conducted by Evans in her research for Personal Politics, as well as a slide show from a feminist organization are also included. Sauer, Farrell & Co. records, 1870-2008 and undated 3.5 Linear Feet 45 Items

Sauer, Farrell, & Co. was a cigar manufacturing company located in Suffield, Connecticut, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Collection of ledgers, account books, order forms, and other ephemera relating to the sale and purchase of cigars by Sauer, Farrell, & Co., Cigar Manufacturers. Materials range in date from the 1870s through the early 1900s, and it is believed that the cigar company may have changed names throughout that period. The centerpiece of the collection is a specimen book of sample cigar box labels, created by the lithographers Heppenheimer & Maurer around 1878. The specimen book includes about 115 leaves, with labels affixed on each side of the leaf; the label colors range from two colors to multiple colors per label. Account books document cigar production, purchase, and sales information. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Savannah Port papers, 1754-1920 20 Linear Feet (5,594 items)

This collection contains the official papers of the Port of Savannah, Georgia, in the Governmental Coastal District of Savannah. They are papers of ship clearance, cargo lists, Treasury Department letters and similar papers which deal with the customs operations at the port from 1820 to 1920. Although the papers mainly consist of cargo manifests, there are also letters, legal documents, literary pieces, and other miscellaneous items. Several of the items deal with slavery in Savannah and there are occasional mentions of piracy, smuggling, and general misdeeds among the seamen.

Scarborough family papers, 1760-1945, 1996 and undated, bulk 1803-1930 6 Linear Feet Approx. 2300 Items

Family based in Mt. Gilead, Montgomery County, North Carolina; relatives were located in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas. Related family names include Clarke, McLeod, Nash, and Smart. Correspondence, legal and financial papers, and other materials dating from the 1700s to the 1940s, relating to the Scarborough family based in Mt. Gilead, Montgomery County, N.C. Papers document rural life in N.C., cotton and tobacco farming, mercantile activities, and the experiences of family members in the Civil War and World War I, and their careers as teachers, local officials, and members of the Republican Party in the 20th century. Includes many letters from friends and relatives who migrated to other Southern states. Bound volumes include account books, court dockets, a scrapbook, a family history, and public school district registers. There are a few items referring to slaves, including two lists of slave names, most likely from N.C. Over 100 Civil War letters were exchanged between family members at home and relatives and friends serving as Confederate soldiers in N.C. locations such as High Point (Camp Fisher), Greenville, Raleigh (Camp Mangum), Tarboro, and Wilmington; Petersburg, Virginia; and Camp Winder and Jackson Hospitals in Virginia. The letters refer to battles, troop movements, camp life, the status of various individuals both at home and abroad, prices of commodities and produce, and life in home towns such as Mt. Gilead, NC, and Bruceville and Warrior Stand, Alabama.

In 1938, the School of Forestry at Duke was founded as the first graduate school of forestry in the South. In the 1970s, the school expanded its program to include a broad range of resource and environmental studies. In 1974/75, it became the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Collection contains memoranda, brochures, newspaper clippings, conference materials, annual reports, photographs and slides relating to the Duke School of Forestry and Environmental Studies from roughly 1960 through 1979.

The Science, Technology and Human Values program (STHV), formerly known as the Science, Society, and Human Values Program, was begun in 1979 by James F. Gifford and Seymour Mauskopf as a unique interdisciplinary program focused on developing a comprehensive view of science, medicine, and technology in social, historical, and ethical terms. The collection contains director's files from 1979-1984 which include administrative and student correspondence, memoranda, student term papers, course syllabi and evaluations, and five cassette tapes of sessions at a STHV symposium on space travel. The collection also contains brochures for the Round Table on Science and Public Affairs, dated 1976-1983.

William H. Scovill (1796-1854) of Waterbury, Connecticut, businessman and founder of the Scovill Manufacturing Company; and Rebecca Beecher (1800-1876), of Kent, Connecticut. The collection includes twenty-nine letters, chiefly the courting letters of William H. Scovill and Rebecca Beecher during a long period of geographic separation and secret engagement from 1817 to 1820. Materials in the collection range in date from 1816 to 1864.

The Scrolls of Fire screen prints is a partial collection of the images created by Israeli painter and graphic artist Dan Reisinger (1934-2019) to illustrate verses by Israeli poet Abba Kovner. Reisinger's illustrations and Kovner's verses were published with parallel Hebrew and English text in 1981 as Megilot ha-esh [Scrolls of Fire: a nation fighting for its life: fifty-two chapters of Jewish martyrology].

"Searching for Butterflies" field recording and photographs depicts the work of Mudar Salimeh, a geologist and artist from Latakia, Syria, and his effort to document butterflies and moths in the area. Consists of one audio file of Salimeh's field recordings produced by Nanne Hauge Kristensen, an audio arist and anthropologist from Denmark; 22 image files with photographs of butterflies and moths; and one text file that includes identification information for the species photographed by Salimeh. Department store chain founded in 1893 as a mail order business; one of the largest retailers in the United States. Collection consists of seasonal catalogs and wish books spanning the years 1910-1994. Catalogs featured the full range of items sold by Sears, from clothing to appliances and toys, and served as a bridge between the company's walk-in department stored and direct marketing mail order business. Initially featured unbranded products before adopting a number of Sears' house brands and eventually featuring nationally branded products. Acquired as part of the John W. Sears Consumer Information Services filmstrip series, circa 1969-1970 1.0 Linear Feet

American retailer founded 1886 in Chicago, Ill. Consumer Information Services produced a series of instructional filmstrips and booklets on a range of home improvement projects. Consists of two boxed filmstrip series: Let's Decorate the Bathroom; and Your Space Age Kitchen. 35mm filmstrips are accompanied by reading scripts and handout booklets intended to instruct homeowners on tips and techniques for designing, planning, repairing and remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, with suggestions for electrical appliances and furnishings. Senior Seaman Nagano photograph album, 1943-1944 and undated 0.7 Linear Feet (1 item)

Senior Seaman Nagano was a navy volunteer flight trainee at Sasebo Air Base in Japan during World War II. Collection comprises a photograph album maintained by Senior Seaman Nagano during his training at Sasebo Air Base during World War II. Contains 79 albumen and gelatin silver photographs, ranging in size from 2.25 x 1.5-inches to 5.875 x 4.25-inches, as well as a few additional paper images that Nagano cut out and pasted into the album. The majority of the photographs are captioned. There are group photographs of the entire school as well as Nagano's class. Photograph topics include physical exercise and judo, drills, formation, and Navy memorial day ceremonies. In addition, there are formal portraits of individuals as well as group portraits of those Nagano knew in flight school and from his hometown. There are also casual images of Nagano's family members, along with a formal portraits, including one of Nagano with his parents. The album cover is decorated with naval and flight images; the cover has become separated from the album.

Sergio Sánchez Santamaría was born in Tlayacapan, Morelos, Mexico, in 1976. A muralist, illustrator, and printmaker, Sánchez Santamaría is the heir of the Taller de Gráfica Popular (TGP) print collective. Collection includes 37 works of art created by Sergio Sánchez Santamaría, including 16 linocuts, 4 lithographs, 4 etchings, 3 scratch board, 8 ink drawings, 1 digital print, and 1 copper engraving. Shawn Pridgen is a documentary photographer based in Brooklyn, New York whose photographic career began with the Black Lives Matter protests, which followed the violent deaths of African American citizens at the hands of law enforcement. In 2020 he received the Collection Award from the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University for this portfolio. Collection consists of fifteen photographic prints of images taken in 2020 at Black Lives Matter protests and rallies in New York City and Washington, D.C. by documentarian Shawn Michael Pridgen. Subjects include portraits of protesters, in some cases with Washington, D.C. monuments in the background; and images of police, crowds, marches, protest signs, city streets and other urban features. Sheila Pree Bright is an award-winning photographic artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. The collection contains 50 digital archival prints and gelatin silver prints, each approximately 32x32 inches, for the #1960Now project that were later published in a book with the same name. The project includes associated materials such as a copy of the book and model version; event flyers; personal notes; digital files; a t-shirt with a button; and other assorted material. Also included are images of the wheat-pasted murals created by Bright depicting activists and other materials from the related project 1960What; images of George Floyd protests; materials for the project Mothers March On featuring mothers whose children were killed by police; and images related to the fiftieth anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. Shields Family papers, 1888-1968 and undated 2.7 Linear Feet circa 1000 Items

Reverend Robert Shields, his wife Louise Shields, and members of their family were Methodist missionaries in Angola between the 1890s and the 1960s. The Shields Family Papers consist of correspondence, legal papers, and photographs created by three generations of a missionary family. The correspondence documents the experiences of a missionary family in Angola (Luanda and Malange) and Zimbabwe (including the Umtali region) in the early twentieth century, and includes letters written from family members in England, among them letters written from Greta Gazeley to her mother, Wilhelmina Shields Gazeley, in the 1950s. The photographs, dating from the early 1900s to the 1960s, portray the lives of missionaries in Africa through portraits and snapshots of the Shields family and other groups both European, American and African, as well as photographs of groups of schoolchildren, mission buildings, and various scenes of African life and landscapes. The collection includes a handwritten memoir by Robert Shields, a biographical account of Louise Raven Shield's life compiled by her daughter, Irene Withey Shields, and various writings by Irene Withey Shields and Wilhelmina Taylor Shields on their experiences in Africa. Shirley Chisholm political materials collection, 1969-1972 1 Linear Feet

Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (1924-2005) was an American politician, educator, and author. She was the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress, where she represented New York's 12th district from 1969 through 1983. In 1972, she became the first major-party Black candidate for President of the United States and the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. This collection includes mimeographed position papers from her presidential candidacy; two posters from her 1972 primary campaign; printed materials about Chisholm's political career; some printed ephemera from her campaign; and a photograph.

Shopkeeper's Expense Account Book, 1850-1863 0.1 Linear Feet 1 Item

The collection consists of one expense account book kept by a shopkeeper in or near Port Deposit, Cecil County, Maryland. Chronological entries from March 1850 to February 1863 record the date, description, and amount for each personal and business expenditure of the shopkeeper, who appears to have sold medicine and paint. Business related entries include freight bills, license fees, corporation taxes, payments for services performed at the shop, expenses in Baltimore and Philadelphia, regular purchases from wholesale druggists such as Canby & Hatch and Wilson & Merritt, and frequent checks drawn on Cecil Bank. Other firms frequently mentioned include Hugh Bolton & Co., Geo. D. Wetherill & Co., and Clark & Jones. Also listed are purchases of food including flour, butter, potatoes, apples, peaches, chicken, beef, mackerel, and brandy; purchases of non-food items including wood, seeds, matches, candles, books, and journals; expenses for his wife and children; payments for services performed at the house; and contributions to the Colonization Society, missionary organizations, the local Methodist church, and Reverend Henry Colelazer. In addition to the itemized entries, the account book contains two tabular sections that together record the daily total for nearly every week from March 18, 1850, to August 10, 1863. Overall, 122 filled and 5 partially used manuscript pages reflect the life of an educated and civic-minded rural shopkeeper in Maryland during the mid-1800s.

Sidney D. Gamble photographs, 1906-2007 15.25 Linear Feet

The Sidney D. Gamble collection consists primarily of contact sheets, hand-colored glass slides, 35mm duplicate slides, contact prints, negatives, and other photographic formats documenting Gamble's four visits to China from 1908 to 1932. In total, there are over 5,000 unique images in the collection depicting urban and rural life, economic conditions, public events, agriculture, religious statuary, architecture, and the countryside. In addition to photographs of China, the collection contains a handful of images captured by Gamble from Japan and Korea and images captured by David Gamble in the western United States, circa 1906. Also included are artifacts, audiovisual materials, including moving images captured by Gamble in China from 1926 to 1933, scrapbooks, a small selection of Gamble's personal papers, and records of the Sidney D.
