John C. Kilgo served as President of Trinity College (Durham, N.C.) from 1894 to 1910. The John C. Kilgo Records and Papers contain correspondence, sermons, lectures, articles, newspaper clippings, memorabilia, printed matter, and scrapbooks pertaining to Kilgo's career as an educator, as President of Trinity College, and as a Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Subjects include Kilgo's educational philosophy, family affairs, Duke family philanthropy and the financial state of Trinity College, union of Methodist churches, Kilgo's election as bishop, and controversies in which he and the College were involved, including the Gattis vs. Kilgo controversy and the John Spencer Bassett Affair concerning academic freedom. ALS from Lettsom to Miss Warren briefly mentions Thomas Joseph Pettigrew. 4 ALS to Lettsom from various correspondents, B. Wilmer, L. Maclean, J. Murphy and W. May, relate to the Medical Society of London. A transcription, in an anonymous hand, of abolitionist verse by Lettsom is followed by a description of the setting of the gathering at which the verses were presented. On the verso of this is an autograph note, signed by Benjamin Wilson, 1801.

A reprint of an article by T. Wood Clarke from the New York State Journal of Medicine gives biographical information.

U.S. Army colonel from North Carolina. Bound volumes, correspondence, scrapbooks, and clippings detailing Langston's activities as a Trinity College (later became Duke University) student, then later as a U.S. Army colonel in World War II, and assistant to General Lewis B. Hershey on the Selective Service Board. Langston also served on General E. H. Crowder's draft board in Washington, D.C. during World War I: Crowder was chiefly responsible for drafting of the Selective Service Act which was passed in May 1917, and as Provost Marshal General had responsibility for administering the program during the war. The bulk of the material covers the period 1941-1946. Other items provide evidence for Langston's support of Prohibition, and his role as opponent of Al Smith in the N.C. Democratic primary in 1928. Later additions to the collection document earlier Langston family history. They also contain Langston's poems, and correspondence with Professor Edwin Mims about them, a scrapbook of the Simmons-Bailey campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1930, and his correspondence with New York attorney Roscoe S. Conkling concerning Langston's opposition to compulsory military service during peacetime.

Advertising executive who worked for Lamar Dean Outdoor (NC). Collection spans 1958-1968 and includes advertising rate schedules, printed materials, presentations and salesman data books. Companies represented include Lamar Dean Outdoor in North Carolina and General Outdoor Advertising. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Lawyer of Charleston (Charleston Co.), S.C. Represented the county for two terms in the state's general assembly; member of the Confederate Army's German Artillery; and member of the Charleston City Council under T.T. Hyde. Also, officer in the National German American Alliance and active in the United Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the South. Married Julia Pieper in 1882. Collection primarily comprises printed material related to John D. Cappelmann's numerous activities. Includes advertisements, church bulletins, invitations, tickets, and programs for balls, orations, literary society meetings, concerts, dances, baccalaureate exercises, recitals, and bicycle races. In addition, there are notices for events and general orders concerning the German Artillery, as well as information on other Confederate memorial events. There are also drafts of legislation for the General Assembly; copies of Charleston City Council minutes, local election campaign materials, bank organizing documents, as well as annual reports and other records regarding the Carolina Mutual Insurance Company, Parker Cotton Mills Company, and the Georgia State Building & Loan Association of Savannah. Charleston organizations represented include the Star Gospel Mission, and The Knights of Pythias; other organizations represented include the YMCA and the German University League. Topics of interest include the peace movement during World War I; the anti-German and anti-German American sentiment of the period; Lutheranism in the early twentieth-century South, especially regarding the Sunday School movement. The collection contains only a few personal letters written to Cappelmann; the majority of letters to him contain solicitations for monetary support, mostly to benefit various local and national Lutheran entities. A few items reference Cappelmann's children, John D., F. William, E. Henry, and Gertrude. Contains several items published in German, as well as a folder of biographical information. Several items postdate Cappelmann's death, and their immediate connection to the collection is unclear.

John D. Shaw was a 1932 graduate of Duke University where he played three seasons of varsity basketball. Scrapbook contains clipping and other assorted memorabilia documenting Duke basketball with the inclusive dates 1930-1932.
