Thomas Prince letters, 1721-1738 0.2 Linear Feet

Thomas Prince (1687-1758) was a graduate of Harvard College, a clergyman, scholar, historian, pastor of the Old South Church in Boston, Mass. from 1718 to 1758, and author of A Chronological History of New England, in the Form of Annals (1736). Collection includes three letters, dated 1721, 1726, and 1738, to Thomas Prince, pastor of the Old South Church in Boston. There are two letters from Prince's sister Abigail in Middleborough, Mass., dated January 4, 1721 and February 25, 1726, both discussing family matters such as health, various leases and deeds, and other subjects. In another letter, dated 1738, Prince's mother-in-law Grace Denny, of Old Newton, England, discusses her anxiety about not hearing from Prince, her declining health, and politics and the royal family in England. In a postscript, Denny notes that she has "heard of a printed account about Great Conversions in Hampshire...by the the Rev'd Doctor Watts and Doctor Guyse."

Thomas Rain Crowe papers, 1950s-2022 112.5 Linear Feet 36.2 Gigabytes

Poet, essayist, translator, publisher, activist, and performing artist; owner and editor of New Native Press in Cullowhee (Jackson Co.), N.C. Crowe's collection contains correspondence with other writers, friends, and relatives; manuscript and printed versions of works by Crowe and others; poetry notebooks; publicity materials; photographs; audio cassettes and other media; New Native Press records; and other items. Other poets represented include Wendell Berry, Robert Bly, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Joy Harjo, David Meltzer, Philip Daughtry, Neeli Cherkovski, Gary Snyder, Bobi Jones (Welsh), Jack Hirschman, Ken Wainio, Dianna Henning, John Lane, and Joe Napora. There is documentation regarding Crowe's music, including collaborations with Nan Watkins. There is also material regarding San Francisco intellectual circles and the International Poetry Festival held there, as well as correspondence concerning activism regarding a wide range of political and social issues. Author of the "Essay on the principle of population" (1798). Collection comprises an undated letter from Malthus to his publisher, William Clowes, regarding a proof correction for an advertisement in one of his publications. In it he also asks if he has misdirected the mailing of his previous corrections, and wonders if they were received in time.

Thomas Smith deed of manumission, 1803 July 19 1.0 Linear Feet (1 item)

Thomas Smith was a resident of the burrough of Norfolk, Va. Deed of manumission of "negro Sue," more commonly known as Susannah Mallory, former property of Charles King Mallory, of Elizabeth City County, [Va.?], by Thomas Smith in the Court of Norfolk County, Va., on 1803 July 19. In the document Smith makes it clear that the sixty dollars he paid for her purchase from Charles King Mallory was advanced entirely by Sue and that he acted only as her "Friendly agent" in the matter, with no interest in holding her as a slave. The deed is witnessed by Richard Henry Lee and R. C. Archer.

Rector of Langley Burrell, Wiltshire, England; Nonjuror. Volume of writings and correspondence of Thomas Stampe, who, in 1701, recanted an oath of allegiance to William and Mary, and thus became a Nonjuror while a beneficed clergy of the Church of England. Writings and letters all relate to the issues of religion, government, and allegiances, and mention George Hickes and Thomas Ken, Bishop of Bath and Wells. Also includes correspondence with Gilbert Burnet, the Bishop of Salisbury.

Thomas Thweatt Jones papers, 1757-1979 and undated 6.5 Linear Feet Approx. 8100 Items

Physician and resident of Durham, North Carolina. Collection consists of correspondence (chiefly 1947-1974), writings, reports, printed material, clippings, and other papers, relating to Jones's interest as a physician in alcoholism, mental health, and agathanasia (the care of the dying), and his activities with the Durham Council on Alcoholism and Medical Society of the state of North Carolina. There are also letters, photographs, writings, legal and financial papers, and other items relating to the Jones, Scanlun, Blackwell, and Graver families of North Carolina and Virginia (Dinwiddie County and other places). Collection highlights include a memoir of Rev. George White discussing slave-owner relations prior to and during the Civil War; photographs of Shenandoah Normal College (Reliance, Va.); records of Jones's service on the staff of the 65th General Hospital in England during World War II (affiliated with the Duke School of Medicine); Mrs. Jones's high school scrapbook and her journals of 1923 and 1926 trips abroad; and a photograph album and other scrapbooks.

Thor Hall papers, 1961-1972 3 Linear Feet 3000 Items

Thor Hall was Associate Professor of Preaching and Theology in the Duke Divinity School from 1962 until 1972. The collection contains materials representative of Dr. Hall's work as a teacher and administrator in the Divinity School as well as information on the growth and development of the Divinity School itself. It also includes materials related to Dr. Hall's work outside the Duke community, particularly in the United Methodist Church. Of particular interest are the folders pertaining to his work in the preaching clinic which he directed in 1964 and 1965. The American Association of Theological Schools Report as well as items in the folder "Organization and Structure, 1968-1971" chart the changes in the Divinity School during the turbulent years of academic and political unrest.

Tijuana Bibles, also known as eight-pagers or dirty little books, were small eight-page publications of cartoon erotica and pornography that became popular during the 1930s and 1940s. This collection includes about 400 Tijuana Bibles, some of them duplicates; a few folders of erotica drawings and drafts by an unknown artist; and printed material about Tijuana Bibles, published from the 1970s through the 1990s.

Time Life Alumni Society certificate to Robert Cowin, 1950-2012 0.1 Linear Feet

Robert Cowin served as Circulation Director of Sports Illustrated, later Editor of Golf Magazine. Time Life Alumni Society certificate to Robert Cowin includes a Certificate of Historical Authenticity documenting the veracity of two memos copied from the Time Inc. Archives. One memo dated November 1950 from Cowin to Editor in Chief Daniel Longwell outlines Cowin's ideas for a new magazine that would become Sports Illustrated. The other memo, dated October 1969 from Garry Valk to Sports Illustrated staff, notes the departure of Cowin from Sports Illustrated and summarizes Cowin's role in the creation of the magazine. Timothy H. O'Sullivan photographs, 1868-1873 1.6 Linear Feet 35 Items

Timothy H. O'Sullivan was an important early American photographer who participated in two geographical surveys of the American West. Collection includes thirty-five gold-toned albumen prints made from glass plate negatives. O'Sullivan made these photographs as part of the King and Wheeler surveys between 1868 and 1873. Main subjects of the photographs are geological and geographical features of Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. Collection also contains four photographs of mining operations and two photographs of the Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico.

Timothy S. Baker Photographs is a collection of photographic materials created by Timothy Baker during his time as a student of Trinity College. Tim Smith (born 1978) is an award-winning photographer based in Manitoba, Canada. "The Hutterites" is part of an ongoing project by Tim Smith, entitled "In The World But Not Of It", documenting the Hutterites, Anabaptists who live communally in colonies in Canada and the United States, largely removed from broader society. Materials span 2010-2024 and include 25 color prints sized 18x24 inches featuring various Hutterite colonies particularly the Deerboine Hutterite Colony in Manitoba, Canada; a directory; a Christmas program; a tiechel (headscarf); journal notes written by Smith; postcards and small ephemera related to Smith's exhibitions; and one video file showcasing cattle branding at Forty Mile Hutterite Colony in Montana, United States. Topics include family life; marriages; communal living; farmwork, ranching, and livestock; depictions of women and youth; adoption of new technology; and religious practices. Tobacco Advertisements collection, 1938-1970 and undated 0.2 Linear Feet

Sue Olmstead was a librarian on the staff of the Olivia Rainey Local History Library (Raleigh, N.C.). Collection comprises approximately 160 print advertisements, most removed from issues of "The State," a North Carolina publication. Advertisements are primarily for cigarettes and other tobacco products from American Tobacco Company (Lucky Strike), Liggett & Myers (Chesterfield) and R.J. Reynolds (Camel, Salem, Winston, plus several corporate advertisements for other products). Many of the advertisements feature testimonials from celebrities (socialites, actors, singers and sports figures). Additional advertisements, many for North Carolina companies, appear on the reverse side of the cigarette ads; also included are advertisements for the United Brewers Industrial Foundation. Tobacco collection, 1828-1996 5.4 Linear Feet

The Tobacco Collection contains material assembled by library staff related to the manufacturing, sale, and use of tobacco in the United States, particularly in North Carolina and Virginia. There are also items referring to tobacco cultivation and processing. Printed advertising predominates, but the contents also include items that are not paper products. Typical paper-based items include cigarette and cigar advertising trade cards of W. Duke, Sons & Co., Lorillard, Liggett and Myers, John Player and Sons, and various other American and British companies; tobacco advertisements by Krueger and Brown of N.Y.; and souvenir tobacco albums published by Allen & Ginter. Other forms of advertising in the collection include broadsides, pamphlets, books, leaflets, letters, envelopes, cigar and cigarette boxes and labels, cans, a plate, wrappers, labels, and catalogs. Images include birds, animals, battle scenes, and persons, including a series on "African Types."

Collection consists of 25 gelatin silver prints of images taken in France by noted American photographer Todd Webb. Tom Burrell papers, 1949-2016 and undated 28.0 Linear Feet

Thomas J. Burrell is a Chicago-based advertising executive who started his own advertising agency, Burrell Communications, in 1971. Collection includes clippings, correspondence, texts of presentations, research reports, print advertisements, commercial scripts and storyboards and other printed materials as well as slides, photographs and audiovisual items (videocassettes, optical discs). Professional files reflect Burrell's specialization in advertising to African American and other minority consumer groups and the firm's approach to multicultural marketing. Materials also relate to Burrell's student years as well as notes and drafts of his book, Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority and Burrell's nonprofit organization The Resolutions Project. Tom Rankin photographs and papers, 1977-2016 33.5 Linear Feet (28 boxes; 2 film reels)

Tom Rankin is a documentary photographer, filmmaker, folklorist, professor of art and documentary studies, and former director of the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Collection consists of 147 black-and-white and color photographs documenting the American South and China. Photographs from the South focus on religious sites, rituals, and communities in the Mississippi Delta region, as well as portraits of individuals, including portraits of Mississippi writer Larry Brown, and Southern landscapes. An additional documentary project from 2016 took Rankin to China, where he photographed semi-rural landscapes, often taken with high-rise buildings in the far distance or adjacent to industrial structures, as well as bridges and rivers, markets and live fish vendors, and a few street scenes. Finished prints range from 8x11 inch contact prints to 11x14, 16x20, and 20x24 large-format prints. Supporting materials include manuscripts, publications files, and two films, all deriving from Rankin's career and art practice. Includes a digital audio recording of a talk by Rankin at the exhibit opening of his work, "Near the Cross: Photographs from the Mississippi Delta." Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The Town and Campus Club is an woman's organization in Durham, North Carolina. It was founded in 1938 with the purpose "to follow the literary interests of the members and to promote friendship and social activity." The records of the Town and Campus Club primarily feature administrative and program records for the organization, including the constitution and by-laws, minutes, and treasurer's reports, as well other occasional records maintained by the secretary, along with program booklets, club histories, and member biographies and sketches. This organization was founded in the early 1990s and is based in Raleigh. Triangle Community Works! was formed in 1994 and consists of a coalition of groups, including ASPYN (A Safer Place Youth Network), The Gay and Lesbian Helpline, P-FLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), and RRNGLE (Raleigh Religious Network for Gay and Lesbian Equality). Collection includes historical documents from several groups in Triangle Community Works!, including ASPYN, RRNGLE, and the Gay and Lesbian Helpline. Materials date from the 1970s to 2008.

The Triangle Universities Computation Center (TUCC) was incorporated in 1965 as a cooperative venture between Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with the goal of providing main-frame computing services, such as electronic data and batch processing, to the universities, RTI International and others. It dissolved in 1990 due to financial difficulties, the increased use of personal computers, and disagreements among the partners. Materials in the collection include administrative records, correspondence, meeting minutes, financial and statistical reports, memoranda, proposals, newsletters, photographs, slides, a scrapbook, and other materials from the Triangle Universities Computation Center.

Trinity College (Durham, N.C.) Office of the Treasurer records, 1891-1924 6 Linear Feet 2,500 Items

In the early years of Trinity College, the President handled most financial affairs with assistance and guidance from the Board of Trustees. When the College moved to Durham in 1892, one of the trustees, Durham businessman Virginius Ballard, filled the post of College Treasurer and served until 1898. President John C. Kilgo took over the task until 1907. At that point, it appears that an office of Treasurer was formally established, as Dallas W. Newsom is listed in the Catalog as Treasurer. The collection includes ledgers and ledger sheets, cash books, journals, insurance policies, bonds, titles, leases, building and service contracts, correspondence, reports and other records, with bulk dates of 1910-1924. Records from 1891 concerning the Durham campus and buildings are also included.

Trinity College Historical Society collection, [1492?] - 1981 20 Linear Feet 3500 Items

In 1892, Dr. Stephen B. Weeks, a professor of history at Trinity College, organized the Trinity College Historical Society. The goals of the Society were to collect, arrange, and preserve written materials and artifacts illustrative of the history of North Carolina and the South, and to promote the study of Southern history through lectures and publications. The Society benefited from the strong leadership of two history professors, John Spencer Bassett and William Kenneth Boyd. They made wide appeals for donations of historical materials and maintained a museum to house these relics. The meetings of the Society, held several times each year, provided a forum at which students and faculty could read their research papers and discuss their ideas. The best of these papers were published, from 1897 to 1956, in the Historical Papers of the Trinity College Historical Society. The collection includes historical notes about Trinity College and the Society, correspondence, meeting announcements, administrative files, publications, speeches, and artifacts. Materials range in date from [1492?] to 1981. English.

In 1887 the Trinity College Library was created when two rival literary societies combined their book collections and added them to the few books already owned by the school. Records kept by the librarians and staff of the Trinity College Library documenting its operations. Included are records of accessions, book orders, circulation, periodicals, and reference books. The records also contain a short history of the Library by Joseph Penn Breedlove as well as the brochure for the opening of the new library building in 1903.

Brown's Schoolhouse was established in 1838 in Randolph County, North Carolina iterations as Union and later went through iterations asUnion Institute Academy, Normal College, and eventually Trinity College. The college relocated to Durham, North Carolina in 1892 and was renamed Duke University in 1924. This collection consists of administrative, academic, and financial records. Materials include accounting ledgers, roll books, student lists and rosters including lists containing the names of students from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, minutes and resolutions, financial and annual reports, account statements, addresses, sermons, correspondence, writings of Braxton Craven, and Trinity College publications.

Turkish political posters collection, circa 1914, 1943-2016 and undated 23 Linear Feet

Collection comprises 176 Turkish political posters, including three duplicates. There are seven series of posters: Korean War, NATO, Historical significance, Commemoration of Ottoman historical figures, Republican-era historical figures, Leftist, and Presidency of the Turkish Republic. In the first, sixteen posters extoll the achievements of the Turkish Armed Forces command or Turkish Brigade in the Korean War between November 1950 and July 1953. In the second series, one poster represents Turkey's relationship to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and another reflects the naval and air force maneuvers of NATO's Southern Command, Greece, and Turkey at Weld Fast in 1953. The third series includes 27 posters that celebrate events of historic national significance and depict international political figures together with Turkish leaders. The fourth series includes four posters that commemorate Ottoman historical figures, including admiral Barbaros Hayrettin, and sultans Mehmet V, Mehmed II, and Selim I. The fifth series includes 14 posters of Repulican-era historical figures, including portraits of World War II generals and political figures. The sixth series contains 63 leftist political posters with political slogans, as well as calls for meetings and demonstrations; most of them date from the second half of the 1970's. The seventh series contains 50 posters issued by the Presidency of the Turkish Republic regarding the failed coup attempt of 15 July 2016.

Turner Family Letters, 1943-1945 and undated 0.2 Linear Feet 40 Items

Letters from three Turner relatives or friends in the U.S. Army during World War II: Johnnie Rice, Arthur Johnson, and Edward G. Walker ["Garl"?]. The letters were addressed primarily to Mrs. "Mom" Turner, and were sent from Fort Bragg, N.C.; England; and France. There are also a few other letters from relatives and friends, a sympathy card on a family death, and one undated letter from a woman to "Nellie" (probably a letter from Mrs. Turner to her sister). It is not clear if the "sons" are Mrs. Turner's sons-in-law or her close friends. The letter writers request news from home, describe life in camp and on the battlefield, and occasionally refer to conditions in French towns and rural areas.

The Turner family was based in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas. Correspondence, papers, diaries, and scrapbooks of Jesse Turner, Sr. (1805-1894), lawyer, jurist, and Whig politician of Van Buren, Ark.; his wife, Rebecca (Allen) Turner (1823-1917); their son, Jesse Turner, Jr. (1856-1919); and other members of the Turner and Allen families, relating to law practice, family history and personal matters, political activities in Arkansas and the U.S. (1840-1900), secession in Arkansas, the Arkansas Constitution of 1836, social life and customs in Arkansas, life during Reconstruction, and U.S. presidential elections of 1848 and 1860. Correspondents include prominent Arkansas attorneys Albert Pike and Absalom Fowler. There are also a number of letters between Rebecca Allen and Jesse Turner before their marriage, and letters from Rebecca to her son Jesse Jr., as well as diaries written by his mother (1857-1859) chronicling his early childhood.

Tyre Glen papers, 1806-1882 and undated 4 Linear Feet

Tyre Glen was a slave trader, planter, postmaster, and merchant in North Carolina. This collection consists largely of business papers, particularly of financial and legal documents concerning the slave trade in North Carolina, Virginia and Alabama as well as possibly other locations. In addition to copious information on slave trading in the 1830s and 1840s, the collection includes references to Glen's Union sympathies and claims for horses confiscated by the U.S. Army; farming; exemptions from the Confederate Army and other topics.

The Duke University Undergraduate Faculty Council of Arts and Sciences (UFCAS), established in 1971, guided undergraduate education in arts and sciences, adopted academic regulations and admissions policies, advised on financial aid, and recognized academic achievement. It succeeded the Undergraduate Faculty Council after the body no longer included representatives from the engineering and nursing schools. In 1991, UFCAS voted to disband and reorganize as the Arts and Sciences Council. Records include bylaws, minutes, correspondence, memoranda, rosters, reports, and other records of the Undergraduate Faculty Council of Arts and Sciences at Duke University.

Formed in 1952, the Undergraduate Faculty Council (UFC) was responsible for the governance of undergraduate education at Duke University. The Undergraduate Faculty Council of Arts and Sciences succeeded the UFC in October 1971, when undergraduate education in engineering and nursing formed separate governing bodies. Collection includes minutes, memoranda, correspondence, questionnaires, reports of standing and ad hoc committees, and other papers pertaining to faculty oversight of undergraduate education. The bulk of the material consists of the records of the Subcommittee on Curriculum, a part of the Committee on Undergraduate Instruction. Other committees include Honors, Program II, the Faculty Advisory System, Residential Life, Study Abroad, Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid, and Academic Standards. One of the major accomplishments of the UFC was a report called "Varieties of Learning Experience," or the Krueger Report (1968), which led to major changes in the undergraduate course of study known as the "new curriculum." Since 1924, the student-run Undergraduate Publications Board, commonly referred to as the Pub Board or UPB, has overseen the production of each of the university's recognized publications (with the exception of The Chronicle and Towerview). The UPB also runs the Blackburn Literary Festival. The collection contains correspondence, memoranda, UPB constitution and bylaws, income reports, clippings, oral histories, and other materials relating to the daily operations of the Undergraduate Publications Board and individual publications produced by the Undergraduate Publications Board.

The Bassett Fund finances public lectures, defrays honoraria for the Blackburn Literary Festival, and supplements new undergraduate publications. The Blackburn Literary Festival honors the spirit of sharing and love of literature embodied by Professor William Blackburn.

Unidentified family photograph album, approximately 1850-1897 1.0 Linear Feet (1 box)

Collection comprises a photograph album maintained by an unidentified wealthy, possibly British, family; handwritten captions appear in several different hands. The 159 photographs either document family travel as souvenirs, or document both their travel and photograph collecting, because many of the photographs are albumen prints by famous late-19th-century photographers, including Bonfils, Zangaki, Samuel Bourne, Francis Frith, and others not identified except by the presence of their negative numbers and captions on the photograph. From these photographers there are images of Israel; Syria; Palestine; Jerusalem; Athens, Greece; and Agra, India, along with photographs of statues and other artifacts recovered in archaeological digs. Other photographs in the album were probably taken by family members, first in Venice, then in various places, including Scotland, England, and Jamaica. Among these photographs are albumen and cyanotype prints. Photographs in the album date between 1850 and 1897, and range in size from 1.5 x 2-inches to 8.5 x 11.5 inches.

United Cigarette Machine Company records, 1887-1955 and undated 40 Linear Feet Approx. 12,000 Items

Lynchburg, Virginia manufacturing company specializing in cigarette machine and car parts; plants were located in the U.S. and Germany. The bulk of the United Cigarette Machine Company collection, dating from 1887-1955, consists of thousands of brownprints ("Van Dyke photoprints") and blueprints related to the various cigarette machines and parts manufactured by the company. These include the Universal, U-K, Improved Bonsack (designed by James Bonsack), and Heckendorn cigarette machines; materials from the 1920s also pertain to the manufacturing of Buick, Dodge, and Chevrolet auto parts. Other files contain black-and-white photographs of products, and company catalogs. Additional material includes contracts, legal papers, appraisals, audits, patent lists, tax reports, and minutes documenting company operations and finances. The center of operations was located in Lynchburg, Virginia; the company also owned manufacturing plants in Germany. A few materials are in French and German.

The United Methodist Church Records are comprised primarily of bound volumes of quarterly conference minutes that document the administrative life of church units (circuits, charges, and churches) in the N.C. Conference (1784-1974, bulk 1841-1919) and the Western N.C. Conference (1884-1962, bulk 1893-1932) of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (MECS). Counties in N.C. represented in the collection include Alamance, Ashe, Bladen, Burke, Caswell, Catawba, Chatham, Cleveland, Dare, Davidson, Durham, Forsyth, Gates, New Hanover, Iredell, Lincoln, Perquimans, Randolph, Rowan, Yadkin, and Wake. However, this collection does not include complete runs of any set of bound minutes, correspondence, or other documentation for any N.C. county or district. There are also bound volumes of N.C. Conference, MECS, district conference minutes (1866-1939); financial, administrative, and legal records for the Board of Missions and Church Extension of the Western N.C. Conference, MECS (1909-1952); bound journals of annual conference meetings of the N.C. Conference, MECS (1838-1913); as well as some district, conference, and national records for non-N.C. conferences and for the MECS and the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC). National records include correspondence and financial records from the American Mission in North Africa, MEC (1909-1952). Although the entire collection dates from 1784-1984, the bulk of the material dates from 1800-1940.

United Nations Ad Hoc Committee on Slavery records, 1918-1956 and undated, bulk 1949-1951 5 Linear Feet

In 1949 the United Nations general assembly asked secretary general to create a committee to investigate the status of slavery and the slave trade. The committee, which was active in 1950-1951, was a joint effort of the Economic and Social Council and the International Labour Organization. The collection contains research files, clippings, minutes, notes, and other materials related to the work of the United Nations Ad Hoc Committee on Slavery.

The U.S. Army Department of Virginia and North Carolina was a combined military unit (merging the Department of Virginia and the Department of North Carolina) of the Union Army during the American Civil War, operating in Union-occupied territory in Confederate States. Many of the records in this collection relate to specific U.S. Army regiments which were stationed in and around Union-occupied New Bern, North Carolina, or Southern Virginia during the latter half of the American Civil War.

United States Army materials relating to the American Civil War, 1860s-1890s 0.5 Linear Feet

The United States Army, also referred to as the Northern, Union, or Federal army, fought against the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. This collection was assembled by Rubenstein Library out of miscellaneous and disparate archival and manuscript collections, including: U.S. Army units and regimental records, inventories, and orders; as assorted letters and correspondence from various Army soldiers and officers; maps, letterheads, and blank forms, all created or produced during the Civil War era. Many materials relate to troop movements; inventories of supplies, equipment, troops, and food; enlistment, pay, and service histories of various members of the U.S. Army; activities of particular regiments; action or battles against the Confederacy; examples of personal letters to and from soldiers' family members; reports and summaries of war conditions in Southern territories (poverty and hunger in Southern towns, destruction and seizure of property, and the difficult circumstances facing newly-freed Black populations); and other assorted bureaucratic and administrative Army records.

United States Commission on Civil Rights, North Carolina Advisory Committee papers, 1949-1962 5.2 Linear Feet approximately 3,900 Items

The United States Commission on Civil Rights North Carolina Advisory Committee Papers span the years 1949 to 1962, but fall chiefly in the period 1957 to 1962. They consist largely of correspondence, but also include reports, drafts of reports, minutes of meetings, and completed survey forms. Statistical charts and maps, transcripts of telephone interviews, signed affidavits, printed material which includes reports of other organizations, articles, brochures, and press releases, mailing lists, notes, and clippings are also included. The collection documents methods of data collection for social research that is directed to governmental policy change. The research particularly focuses on racial discrimination against and the civil rights of African Americans, and to a lesser extent Native Americans, in North Carolina. Most of the correspondence was generated from the office of Chairman McNeill Smith, and the collection therefore does not represent the work of other Committee members, except for their communications with Smith.
