Treasurer's Office Records span the years from 1928-1952, although the bulk of the material dates from 1928 to the 1940s. The collection documents the financial operations of JWT offices around the world and to a lesser extent in the United States. The materials consist of correspondence, financial records, and legal documents relating to the activities of JWT's Treasurer's Office. Correspondents include Earle Clark (Treasurer, 1921-39), Donald C. Foote, (Assistant Treasurer in charge of accounting and budgeting in JWT's international operations, 1937-52), Luther O. Lemon (Assistant Treasurer and Comptroller, 1937-46; Treasurer, 1946-57), and Sam Meek (Vice President in charge of International Operations 1930-64); senior staff members in domestic and international offices; JWT's legal counsel; and representatives from numerous financial institutions. Multinational clients represented in the International Offices Series are the Eastman Kodak Company, the Kellogg Company, the Gillette Company, RCA, and Reader's Digest. International offices well-documented include those in Antwerp, Berlin, Bombay, Bucharest, London, and Mexico City. Records for many of JWT's offices are not included in the Treasurer's Office Records, which indicates that the files in their present form may be incomplete.

The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Vergil Reed was director of the U.S Bureau of the Census (1940s), Director of Research and an economist with J. Walter Thompson Company (1940s-1950s), as well as a professor of marketing and foreign trade at Michigan State, Columbia and Boston Universities. Lubertus Smilde was Reed's colleague and successor in the Market Research Department at JWT. The Vergil D. Reed and Lubertus Smilde Papers span the years 1944 to 1960 and include correspondence, memoranda, office files, client files, reports, speeches, and newspaper clippings, as well as some advertisements. The material forms the body of extant records for Reed's work as Director of Research for JWT; however, a substantial portion of the collection originated in the office of Reed's colleague and successor, Lubertus Smilde. Topics include analysis of population trends and their influence on various markets; views of the private enterprise system; how research findings might be applicable to JWT clients; and work on JWT's World Markets Series. The diaries of William James Carlton span the years 1862 to 1877; the biography dates to about 1964. There are transcripts of the diaries and a draft manuscript of a biography, A Portrait of William James Carlton, 1838-1902, by Frankie McKee Robins. The transcripts are slightly annotated. For the years from 1862 to November 1864 the diaries chronicle William James Carlton's participation in the United States Civil War. From 1864 to 1877, the diaries primarily describe family events and church-related activities. A December 1873 entry indicates that no diaries were kept for the years 1865 to 1872. The bulk of the biography describes the years from 1861 to 1862.

Lee Preschel founded JWT Venezuela in 1964 and served as President of JWT Latin America from 1980-1987. Preschel also acted as Interim Director-Manager of JWT Italy in 1968, served on the JWT Board of Directors beginning in 1980, and became the chairman of the Latin America-Asia Pacific region in 1987. He was named Advertising Personality of the Year in 1987 by the Venezuelan Federation of Advertising Agencies. The W. Lee Preschel Papers span the years 1964-2001 and document Preschel's career as president of the J. Walter Thompson Company's Latin American operations. The collection includes correspondence, memoranda, speeches, presentations, reports, newsletters, clippings, photographs, conference programs and agendas, awards, publications, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and audiovisual materials. The J. Walter Thompson Company World War II Advertising Collection documents the war-related activities of the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) advertising agency during 1940-1948, including a few post-war assessments. In particular, it shows JWT's contributions to the war effort by its in-house documentation and work on government, civilian, and war-supporting charitable organization accounts. Materials include lists, memos, press releases, correspondence, notes, and advertisement tearsheets and proofs. Many of the materials in this collection are products of campaigns conducted under the auspices of the War Advertising Council, as well as those sponsored by civilian clients. These advertisements and pamphlets supported food rationing, fuel and rubber conservation, the purchase of War Bonds, the United Services Organization (USO), military recruitment, and women's employment in war-related jobs. Other advertisements arose from JWT's work in 1941 and 1942 for the Navy Relief Society. Items produced by the JWT London Office supported British War Relief (Ministry of Food, 1940-1941) and the Food Facts series (recipes and cooking tips for foods available despite rationing).

Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) is the largest enduring advertising agency in the United States. The Information Center of the New York Office began a collection of writings and speeches by former JWT executives. Later, scrapbooks and binders of speeches by Stanley Resor and Arno Johnson and Norman Strouse were added, and the Information Center expanded its activities to routinely collect texts of speeches given by current JWT staff. After the transfer of the JWT Archives to Duke University, additions continued to be received and interfiled. The J. Walter Thompson Company Writings and Speeches collection spans 1912 through 2000 and includes primarily printed texts of speeches given by advertising executives employed at the J. Walter Thompson Company. Also included to a lesser extent are clippings or reprints of articles, reports, and white papers, along with some books written in whole or in part by JWT staff. Topics include general trends in advertising and marketing, specific themes related to JWT's policies and philosophies, year-end reports, specific marketing strategies. Kay Leigh Hagan is a writer, teacher, and feminist. Much of her early career focused on raising women's consciousness by teaching how to recognize various forms of internalized oppression in private classes she called "Feminars". In addition to her writing and teaching, this collection documents Hagan's many public speaking appearances and workshops, including those at womyn's music festivals (1988-2000). Her published works include Fugitive Information: Essays from a Feminist Hothead (1993), Internal Affairs: A Journal Keeping Workbook for Self-Intimacy (1990), Prayers to the Moon: Exercises in Self-Reflection (1991), and Vow: The Way of the Milagro (2003) with photographer Richard Downing. She was also the editor of Women Respond to the Men's Movement: A Feminist Collection (1992), and co-author of A Peculiar Alchemy (2007), a centennial history of the School for Advanced Research, with Nancy Owen Lewis. Kenneth Hubbard (1942- ) is an avid collector of United States campaign memorabilia and is also a Duke alumnus (T. 1965) and former Duke University trustee. The Kenneth Hubbard Collection of Presidential Campaign Ephemera consists of printed and artifactural memorabilia from assorted presidential campaigns, dating largely from the late nineteenth century through the present. Items are chiefly relating to the Democratic and Republican political parties, with some materials from the U.S. Socialist Party and the Prohibitionist Party. Kenneth M. Johnson Sermons, 1951-2010 11 Linear Feet

Collection consists of typescripts of Rev. Kenneth Johnson's sermons, many containing handwritten notes and accompanying material on which the sermon topic was based. Sermons are numbered and are arranged by date, according to the church Johnson was serving at the time. The 2002 accession also contains card indices of sermons (ca. 3600 items), which arranges sermons by title, topic, and scriptures and texts. Johnson's sermons were delivered at United Methodist churches across North Carolina, including McKendree Chapel, New Mt. Vernon-Shady Grove, West Bend, Oak Summit, Asbury Memorial, Green Street, Saint Andrew's (Charlotte), Central (Mooresville), Leaksville (Eden), First (Newton), Burkhead (Winston-Salem), Aldersgate Methodist (Shelby), and Grace Methodist (Greensboro). Johnson also preached several sermons in Indonesia (1995, 1998).

Keystone View Company educational lantern slides set, 1904-circa 1919 0.2 Linear Feet (2 boxes)

Set of 96 black-and-white glass lantern slides used in the United States for the teaching of history and geography. All of the slides except one were published by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania. The 97th slide is a clear film transparency of a map of Germany following World War I, published by the Excelsior Illustration Company. Images include well-known United States historic sites; landmarks in colonial cities such as Williamsburg and Boston; views and cultural scenes from the Middle East, Japan, Hawaii, Korea, and the Philippines; a U.S. suffragists' parade in 1913; a set of Japanese and Western wedding scenes; and a few images of U.S. troops taken during the Mexican, Cuban and Philippine conflicts and in World War I. One slide shows the ruins of Belleau, France, circa 1918. Another features a memorial portrait of Secretary of State John Hay (d. 1905). The slides all measure 4 x 3.25 inches. They are accompanied by two booklets with detailed narrative entries for most of the slides. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Kimbei Kusakabe photograph album with costumes, portraits, occupations, and views of Japan, between 1885-1890 3.5 Linear Feet (3 boxes)

Large souvenir folio album from the Yokohama studio of Japanese photographer Kimbei Kusakabe, featuring 100 hand-tinted albumen prints on original mounts, most with title labels in English. Also included are the highly decorated black lacquer covers and original presentation box. Most of the prints measure approximately 8 1/8 x 10 3/8 inches; the mounts are sized 10 1/4 x 14 inches. Images were designed to appeal to tourists, and portray crafts and trades; rice cultivation; tea houses; hotels, gardens, temples, and other scenes, mostly in Kyoto, but also including Kobe, Yamato, Nagasaki, and Arima. Portraits of people include: geishas bathing, playing musical instruments, and dressing; Samurais and Sumo wrestlers; rural inhabitants; a physician; a rickshaw and passengers; a funeral; and numerous other subjects typical of these albums. A few of the prints are attributed to other photographers, notably Baron Raimund von Stillfried. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Papers of Kindred Avin Ritchie, a sergeant in the US Army Postal Regulating Section in Europe during World War II. The Kindred Avin Ritchie Papers span the years 1939 to 1977, with the bulk of the collection dated between 1943 and 1945. The papers are primarily comprised of correspondence, particularly between Kindred Avin (K.A.) Ritchie and his wife, Sara Meda Henderson (S.M.) Ritchie, while he was serving in the U.S. Army Postal Service during World War II in various locations in the United States and Europe, primarily in France and England. Smaller amounts of materials also were sent from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. Exchanges between K.A. and S.M. Ritchie include candid comments about marriage and sexuality, and references to Army censorship and the scarcity of goods on both sides of the Atlantic. Correspondence from S.M. Ritchie and other family and friends, including K.A. Ritchie's mother Mittie Hahn (M.H.) Ritchie, give a sense of some of the ways in which the war affected those at home. Photographs, programs and playbills, Nazi memorabilia, and other ephemera are included with much of the correspondence.

Kivie Kaplan papers, 1968-1971 1 Linear Feet

Kivie Kaplan was born on April 1, 1904 in Boston, Massachusetts, the youngest of three sons of Benjamin and Celia (Solomont) Kaplan. He joined the NAACP in 1932 and was elected to the National Board in 1954. He was elected president in 1966 and served until his death in 1975. This collection contains correspondence and associated materials of Kivie Kaplan, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1966 to 1975. The bulk of the materials are sixteen of Kaplan's letters sent to Harold Gilden, a noted Chicago labor attorney. The letters span the years 1968 to 1971 and provide information about the activities of Kivie Kaplan, while at the NAACP headquarters and speaking to gatherings around the country. Among the people referenced in the letters are Martin Luther King, Jr., the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and prominent civil rights activists in Mississippi and Chicago. The letters also discuss Kaplan's philanthropic activities. The collection also includes eight separately printed items related to the NAACP and the civil rights movement and two NAACP 'Life Member' plaques.

Knight family papers, 1784-1960 and undated, bulk 1840s-1890s 5.5 Linear Feet (13 boxes)

Correspondence, diaries and notebooks, financial papers, legal papers, genealogical documents, printed materials, and other materials pertain to the John Knight family of Natchez, Mississippi and Frederick, Maryland. Materials in the collection date from 1784 to 1960, and the bulk date from the 1840s to the 1890s. The majority of the papers concern the personal, legal, and financial activities of John Knight (1806-1864), merchant, plantation owner, lawyer, and investor; Frances Z.S. (Beall) Knight (1813-1900), his wife; and their daughter Frances (Fanny) Beall Knight McDannold; as well as their children, relatives, friends, and business partners, especially banker Enoch Pratt and William Murdock Beall. Significant topics include: life in Natchez, Mississippi and Frederick, Maryland; their management of plantations and enslaved people; slavery in Mississippi and other Southern states; 19th century economic conditions, especially concerning cotton, banking and bank failures; U.S. politics in the 1850s-1860s; the Civil War, especially in Maryland; cholera and yellow fever outbreaks; 19th century family life; and the Knights' travels to Europe, Russia, and other places from 1850 to 1864. Genealogies chiefly relate to the descendants of Elisha Beall of Maryland, and the McCleery, Pettit, and McLanahan families of Indiana and Maryland. Papers of John Knight's wife, Frances (Beall) Knight, include her diaries, correspondence, and legal papers. There are also diaries kept by Fanny, their daughter, documenting her travels in the 1860s, as well as her school notebooks and correspondence.

Biologist whose main area of research was in animal physiology, particularly that of the camel. Schmidt-Nielsen spent the bulk of his career at Duke University, from 1952 to 1995, during which he published approximately 300 articles, and key works such as Animal Physiology, and Scaling: Why Is Animal Size So Important? Collection contains correspondence, research notes, field data, published materials, lecture notes, memos, reports, grant applications, and other materials. The papers span the years 1939-1994, documenting Schmidt-Nielsen's active research and teaching careers.

Kris Graves American Monuments photograph portfolio, 2020 1.5 Linear Feet (1 box)

Kris Graves (1982- ) is an artist and publisher based in New York and California. The portfolio is made up of 16 images taken by Graves which speak to the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement as well as to public opinion about Confederate Civil War monuments. The photographs he shot at dusk and at night in July 2020 capture a series of projections superimposed onto a 60-foot tall statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, once part of Richmond, Virginia's iconic Monument Avenue. Run by multimedia artist Dustin Klein, the projections feature the faces of recent Black victims of white violence, including Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Christopher DeAndre Mitchell, Deborah Danner, Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. Several other photographs were taken by day and include a self-portrait at Stonewall Jackson's grave, and a monument in Tuskegee, Alabama, shrouded in a blue tarp. Includes printed sheet with essay by Diana McClure. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Kristin Bedford photographs, 1930s-2018 10 Linear Feet (15 boxes)

Kristin Bedford is a photographer based in Los Angeles. The 172 color photographs taken by Bedford from 2012 to 2018, derive from three projects: "Be Still: A Storefront Church in Durham," which consists of images of African American worshippers and their pastor in Durham, North Carolina; "The Perfect Picture," images from the multi-racial Peace Mission Movement religious community, founded by Father and Mother Divine in the 1930s, and the community's estate, Woodmont, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Bedford's latest work, "Cruise Night," a photographic essay on the lowrider community in Los Angeles, California. The "Perfect Picture" prints are accompanied by a variety of related materials (1930s-1990s), including movement publications and print ephemera, historical photographs, a CD of sermons, memorabilia, and other items; materials in this project speak to race relations in the 20th century, the civil rights movement, and African American religious culture. All three projects include a set of large color inkjet exhibit prints as well as a duplicate set of smaller handling prints, and an essay written by the photographer for each project. Ku Klux Klan collection, 1916-1987 and undated 5 Linear Feet

Twentieth-century secret fraternal group held to confine its membership to American-born white Protestant Christians. Collection includes a broad range of Ku Klux Klan pamphlets, flyers, and other ephemera regarding Klan membership, Anglo-American values, protests against African Americans, Communists, or non-Protestant people, and promotional Klan events. Early material highlights activities of the Women of the Klan in Pennsylvania during the 1920s, including their charity work and fundraising for the Klan Haven, an orphanage. This material also includes large panoramic photographs of 1920s Klan reunions. Later materials from the 1960s are largely from the Southeast and mid-Atlantic States, and include literature, flyers, and handouts on Klan history, segregation, school integration, Communism, Catholicism, and Judaism.

Ladies of Llangollen collection, 1774-1991 9.5 Linear Feet

In the late 18th century, Eleanor Butler (1739-1829) and Sarah Ponsonby (1755-1832), also known as the Ladies of Llangollen, left their lives in the upper tiers of Anglo-Irish society and made a home for themselves in Llangollen, Wales, to the disapproval of both their families. Butler and Ponsonby appeared to have understood their relationship as a marriage, and they were known for dressing alike in masculine clothing. They were part of an emerging culture of 'romantic friendship' between same-sex couples. While they lived a life of rural retreat, the Ladies' relative celebrity and social status meant that their home Plas Newydd became a salon. They hosted the many of the intelligensia of the day, including poets such as Wordsworth and Byron, and the reigning Queen Charlotte. The collection is largely made up of letters by the Ladies, as well as materials about Llangollen, the cultural haven of Plas Newydd, and images of the Ladies in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Wife of Viscount Feilding, 9th Earl of Denbigh. Diary (350 p.) and typed transcript describing a voyage to India and the social and religious life of a British Army officer's wife near Poona. Lady Feilding's description of the voyage aboard the troopship CROCODILE includes the bad conditions as well as entertainment on ship. Enroute to India they stopped at Malta, Port Said, Suez, and the Red Sea, and then went on to Bombay, Kirkee, and Poona.

Lane family papers, 1861-1916 and undated 0.75 Linear Feet

The Lane family were residents of Wallingford, Connecticut. Brothers Oscar, Josiah, Theodore, Charles, and William all served in the Union Army during the Civil War, largely as musicians in regminental bands. Collection consists of correspondence, three diaries belonging to Oscar Lane, a scrapbook, and other related materials. Letters and diary entries document activities and camp life of the 5th Connecticut Volunteers and Harland's Brigade bands, particularly those involving Oscar Lane. The scrapbook contains clippings concerning the Veteran's Drum Corps, the Grand Army of the Republic, members of the Lane family, and Wallingford, Connecticut, as well as photographs, badges, a survivors roster for the 5th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers, and postcards.

Lane Pryce letter to Joan Harris, 2010 3 items

Joan Harris and Lane Pryce are fictitious characters in the television drama Mad Men (2007-2015), set in a New York advertising agency during the 1960s. Consists of a letter from Pryce to Harris, dated October 7, 1965, promoting Harris to the position of Director of Agency Operations. The letter was a prop used in Season 4, Episode 13, "Tomorrowland" that originally aired on 2010 October 17. The collection consists of approximately 280 zine titles (some with multiple issues) collected by Cohen and several hundred pieces of correspondence addressed to her or to her zines, Runt and Oh Oh Cheri, dating from the 1990s. Larry Schwarm "On fire" exhibit photographs, 1990s, 2003 7 Linear Feet (6 boxes; 76 prints)

Collection comprises 76 color photographic prints, measuring from 11x14 to 20x24 inches, depicting the annual prairie fires that sweep across east-central Kansas. These images were taken during the 1990s; the artist has continued taking images of prairie fires up to the present (2015). For the 1990s project, published in a book entitled "On fire," Schwarm was awarded the 2002 Honigman First Book Prize in Photography by the Center for Documentary Studies in Durham, North Carolina. Laura Dean papers, 1966-2007 30.34 Linear Feet

Laura Dean (b. 1945) is an American choreographer and composer. In 1972, she established her company, Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians, where she created the choreography for forty works, and in most instances, created the music as well. A number of Dean's pieces were also accompanied by the music of Steve Reich. Dean continued to create works for her company until 2000. She received the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award in recognition of her accomplishments as a choreographer and composer in 2008. Collection includes photographic prints, contact sheets, negatives, slides, clippings, programs, printed materials, posters, VHS videotapes, and an audiocassette.

ALS. Relates the circumstances of Dreys' visit to Paris, namely the death of his sister, widow of Dr. Alphonse Sanson. Informs Blanche of a visit to M. Kaempfen in Paris. Asks Blanche to convey his gratitude to "le Directeur" for granting him leave to attend to the funeral. The letter also bears an ANS, dated 1887. Jan. 22, from E. Blanche, Auteuil, to "confrere et ami", presumably forwarding Dreys' letter to "le Directeur."

Lauren Henkin photographs, 2015 May 1.5 Linear Feet (1 box; 47 items)

The forty color inkjet photographs in this collection were taken by Lauren Henkin in May 2015 in and around Hale County, Alabama, part of the Alabama and Mississippi "Black Belt." The prints (17x22 inches) form part of a body of work titled "What's Lost is Found." Subjects include rural inhabitants, white and black; residences of all kinds, including many interiors; church exteriors and interiors; and rural and wooded landscapes, As part of the photographer's intent to capture the spirituality she perceived in the place and its people, captions for each image are taken from biblical verses. Collection includes five sheets with detailed captions and locations for each image. The Black Belt region is noted for its black topsoil, cotton plantations, the legacy of slavery, civil rights history, and photographic history: Walker Evans, Gordon Parks, and William Christenberry both produced some of their most well-known work in these same places. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection consists of 49 color inkjet prints from the documentary project "Test of Faith" by photographer Lauren Pond. The images are approximately 20x14 inches in size and are unmatted. Between 2011 and 2016, Pond documented the life, death, and West Virginian family of Pentecostal pastor and serpent handler, Mack Wolford, of the Full Gospel Apostolic House of the Lord Jesus in Matoaka, West Virginia. The series includes images of Wolford's death in his family home after he was bitten by the venomous snake. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Lawrence Chesterfield Bryant papers, 1865-1977, bulk 1942-1977 3.2 Linear Feet 30 Items

University professor, minister, academic dean, and chairman of the Guidance Dept. and Professor of Education at South Carolina State College. Collection contains thirty bound volumes of letters, documents, business records, research work, financial and legal papers, writings, and various other papers assembled by Bryant. Most correspondence dates since 1968 and is personal in nature. Writings and other materials deal with his career, the compilation of his memoirs, and his positions at S.C. State College. Included are the records of his genealogical research on lives of African American South Carolina legislators, and materials relating to politics and voting in Southern states. Dr. Bryant graduated from Shaw University in 1940 and received several more advanced degrees at other institutions.

Lawrence Sumulong is a Filipino-American photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. Collection consists of 15 black-and-white oversize inkjet images printed on banana-fiber paper, documenting the lived experiences and memories of Marshallese and Bikinian survivors who were forced to leave their Pacific island homes because of the nuclear bomb tests carried out in the late 1940s by the U.S. military. The Marshallese and Bikinian diaspora explored in these photographs is based in Springdale, Arkansas. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Leach Family papers, 1798-1994 3 Linear Feet

The Leach family of Randolph County traces its founding to Stephen Leach who appears in the records of provincial North Carolina in the mid-eighteenth century. The Leach family joined other white families in Randolph County to improve the local school, Brown's Schoolhouse, and continued to be involved with the school through to its development into Trinity College. This collection consists of materials regarding the family's history. Included are genealogy research files, correspondence, personal writings, photographs, scrapbook, autograph books, and clippings. Materials with known dates span 1798 to 1994.
