M. F. Wilson diary, 1903 September 21-1904 September 20 1.0 Volumes (196 pages)

M. F. Wilson was a midshipman in the gunroom of the HMS Leviathan, a Royal navy cruiser based in the China Station in 1903. Diary of life aboard a British war ship, maintained by M. F. Wilson over one year, including entries related to target practice and other drills, preparation of torpedos, coaling, mooring and unmooring, movements of sailors among the Royal Navy's ships, watches and duties, cleaning and painting, preparations for inspection, and the coming and going of other countries' vessels. He also records activities during free time, including playing football, hockey, rugby, cricket and taking part in boxing matches and hunting parties. Wilson outlines his shore leave excursions to Mato, China; Tokyo; Shanghai; and the Ming Tombs, where he attended dinners and the theater, bathed and swam, or held picnics and hiked. There are descriptions of hotels, bath houses, tea rooms and stores. In an entry for December 12, Wilson notes the purchase of his photographic gear, and in February he announces that war has been declared between Japan and Russia, the progress of which he follows in subsequent entries. Major ports mentioned include Nagasaki, Weihaiwei, China; Hong Kong, Yokohama, Woosung, and Nankin.

Michael Faraday letters, 1863 January 30, 1865 April 1 0.1 Linear Feet

The collection consists of two letters written by Michael Faraday, English physicist and resident of the Royal Institution of Great Britain, toward the end of his life. One is addressed to the Duchess of Northumberland thanking her for her generosity, and asking if she might send Faraday something in return, apparently a photograph of herself. The other letter is written to F. Gye, also thanking him for a gift, most likely tickets to a Covent Garden show: Frederick Gye was the prominent manager for the Royal Italian Opera productions. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Michael Francis Blake photographs, circa 1912-1934 1.0 Linear Feet (3 boxes)

Michael Francis Blake was one of Charleston, South Carolina's first African American studio photographers. Collection consists of 118 photographs, mostly studio portraits taken by Michael Francis Blake from about 1912 to 1934, with some outdoor settings. There is also a full set of copy prints. The great majority of the subjects appear to be African American; however, there are also individuals who are multi-racial, and possibly white and Asian. Formats comprise 91 photographic postcards and 28 black-and-white prints, many on card mounts but some in the form of more casual snapshots; there are also eight copy negatives. A few of the photographs may be taken by others. Thirty-six individuals in the photographs have been identified, including a portrait of the photographer. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

Michael Itkoff photographs, 2006-2008 1 Linear Feet (3 boxes)

The thirty 20x24 inch exhibition-quality color photographs in this collection form a body of work, entitled "Wrecked," that explores the world of American stock car racing and demolition derbies, as well as the drivers, mechanics, pit crews, and spectators who prepare for and take part in the events. The images were taken by photographer Michael Itkoff from 2006 to 2008 at speedways, fairgrounds, and garages in New York State, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The prints are accompanied by a video of a demolition derby, a demolition derby team t-shirt, and a safety vest. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The Michael I. Rostovtzeff Papers span the years 1897 to 1968 with the bulk dated 1926 to 1954. The collection chiefly consists of the correspondence of Michael Rostovtzeff and C. Bradford Welles, a colleague of Rostovtzeff's at Yale University, with other scholars in the fields of ancient history, archaeology, and philology. Other materials include autobiographical writings by Rostovtzeff, photographs, financial papers, and clippings. The papers primarily reflect Michael Rostovtzeff's tenure as a faculty member of the Classics Department at Yale University.

Michael Peterson papers, 1961-2019 and undated, bulk 1972 3 Linear Feet 500 Items

Novelist, veteran of the Marine Corps in Vietnam, and alumnus of Duke University. Convicted in 2003 of murdering his wife Kathleen Peterson; a retrial was ordered in 2011. In 2017 Peterson submitted an Alford plea to the reduced charge of manslaughter, was sentenced to time already served, and was set free. Chiefly consists of correspondence and writings that pertain to three novels written by Michael Peterson: A Time of War, The Immortal Dragon, and The Enemy. Peterson served in the Marine Corps and based these novels around his experiences during the Vietnamese conflict. The writings contain handwritten and typed drafts of the three novels. While an undergraduate at Duke University, Peterson served as editor of the student newspaper, The Duke Chronicle. Issues of this newspaper printed during his editorship are bound together and included within the collection.

Milo A. Jewett was a physician, amateur photographer, and American consul in Turkey (Sivas, 1892-1905 and Trebizond, 1905-1911). Collection comprises 19 images of various locations in the northern provinces, including 18 mounted albumen photographs probably taken by Jewett, along with one published view of Sivas attributed to Franklin Eng Co, Boston. All but one of the images is captioned, and several photographs an additional information written on the back of the mount.

Milo Guthrie papers, 1962-1987 20.2 Linear Feet circa 15,150 Items

The Milo Guthrie Papers consist mainly of periodicals and printed materials produced by American politically left organizations and document a range of issues including civil rights, feminism, environmental defense, nuclear freeze and disarmament, gay and lesbian rights, Latin American and Puerto Rican politics, labor issues, and various political parties and candidates, particularly the Socialist Party. Included is a small amount of original material, primarily correspondence with members of various organizations concerning support for issues and activities. Much of this is directly related to the political campaigns of independent party candidates as well as Guthrie's own political campaigns in Tennessee in 1982 and 1984.

Minnie Bruce Pratt papers, 1870s-2005, bulk 1975-2005 94 Linear Feet

Minnie Bruce Pratt was born in Selma, Alabama in 1946 and raised in nearby Centreville. She received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and a doctorate in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. An award-winning poet, Pratt has published collections of both poetry and essays. Pratt began teaching and grass roots organizing in North Carolina in the 1970s, and has continued her work as a professor and activist through 2008, the time of this writing. Pratt frequently makes speaking appearances at conferences and universities across the United States. Pratt has two sons, Ransom Weaver and Ben Weaver, from her marriage (1966-1975). As of 2008, Pratt resides with longtime partner, transgender activist and author Leslie Feinberg. The collection dates primarily between 1975 and 2005 and focuses on women's studies, sexual and gender identity, sexuality, and Pratt's fight against racism, sexism, imperialism and other forms of intolerance. A Writing Series comprises drafts, proofs, and galleys related to Pratt's major works through 2003, as well as materials related to shorter pieces by Pratt, reviews, print interviews, materials related to Pratt's editorial work, and personal journals. The series also contains materials pertaining to the outside funding from grants and speaking appearances that Pratt obtained to support herself as a writer. Major works represented are Pratt's poetry and essay collections The Sound of One Fork, We Say We Love Each Other, Crime Against Nature, Rebellion: Essays 1980-1991, S/HE, Walking Back Up Depot Street, and The Dirt She Ate. Miriam Slifkin papers, 1961-1994 7.5 Linear Feet 5000 Items

Miriam Slifkin was a feminist leader in Chapel Hill who was active from the 1960's-2000's. Miriam Slifkin founded the Chapel Hill chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the Orange County Rape Crisis Center. This collection contains NOW operational files including correspondence, newsletters, chapter organization records, speeches, fund raising, budget files, files on related organizations, and files related to sexual discrimination and sexual discrimination lawsuits. Other materials document the founding and early history of the Orange County Rape Crisis Center and her work on the Board of the Orange County Human Relations Commission. Slifkin's work to make the Morehead Scholarships at the University of North Carolina coeducational are also documented. Also included are materials for courses on Women's Studies and other educational materials, handbooks, personal files, issues of SPOKESWOMAN, NCC-LAW newsletters, and two audiocassettes of an interview of Slifkin, 1994. M. M. Haworth medical diary and journal, 1846-1908 0.8 Linear Feet (3 items)

Dr. Marmaduke M. Haworth was born 20 January 1823 in Guilford County, N.C., and died 23 March 1894 in Franklinville, Randolph County, N.C. He served the Franklinville area as a physician. He married Mary McMasters in 1852 and the couple had three children, Pandora, Viola, and Elizabeth. Collection comprises Haworth's medical diary and journal (approximately 156 pages), including his notes on treatment of physical ailments and on childbirth in the rural south before and after the Civil War. Haworth studied medicine at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia; he recorded the purchase of this notebook at Auner's bookstore to be used for his medical notes during 1846-1847. At the beginning he listed the titles and prices for the medical reference books he purchased. He then recorded 30 pages of remedies and cures, and provided a 4-page manuscript index to this material bound in at the back of the volume. He also included notes on course instruction (at one point mentioning the lectures of Nathaniel Chapman). The balance of the volume is, however, a record of over 750 obstetric deliveries that Haworth accomplished during his career, some with full case histories. The organization of the notebook is somewhat confused because Haworth stitched in pages with notes written longitudinally among the original medical course lecture notes he retained. The obstetric entries date from 1846-1894; there are two clippings inserted, one dated 1908.

Mobius Advertising Awards collection, 1970s-2002 and undated, bulk 1984-2002 1328 Linear Feet 19,024 Items

Collection consists primarily of television commercials, although it includes some radio commercials, which were entered for Mobius awards presented in 1971-1999. Most of the collection is divided into two main series, North America and International. Commercials are judged by product type/category as well as budget size. Also included are brochures and press releases which describe the award process ca. 1970s-1990s (98-156 box 68). There are compilation tapes documenting the award-winning entries for 1990-1997 (98-156 box 69). (Accessions 1997-0101: 12,237 items, 850.5 linear feet, dated 1984-1991, undated; 1998-0156: 1500 items, 105 linear feet, dated 1971-1997; 1999-0152: 1200 items, 112.5 linear feet, dated 1997-1998). Morrie Camhi photographs, 1960s-2012 and undated 12 Linear Feet Approx. 800 Items

Documentary photographer and instructor based in Petaluma, California; died in 1999. Collection features 167 black-and-white prints of documentary photographer Camhi's work on five projects: ADVantage, a series of portraits of individuals who have written personal want ads; Espejo and Farmworkers, which explore Mexican American labor activism and the lives of undocumented immigrants; Jews of Greece, portraits of Jewish people living in various places in Greece; and The Prison Experience, which documents inmates,their families, and staff of the California State Prison at Vacaville and their answers to the question Camhi posed to them about what they would like people to know about life in prisons. The gelatin silver prints range in size from 8.5x13.5 to 10.25x13.25 inches; most are in 16x20 inch mats. The collection of prints is accompanied by approximately five hundred original negatives and slides, many featuring Camhi's own family as well as several photographic projects not represented in the prints series. Morris and Dorothy Margolin film collection, 1947-1982 and undated 10.5 Linear Feet Approx. 4850 Items

The Morris and Dorothy Margolin film collection dates from 1947 to 1982 and includes twenty-five 16mm and seven Super 8 motion picture films created by Morris Margolin, chiefly documenting Morris and Dorothy's international travels. The films include footage from Pakistan, Bulgaria, Ethiopia, and Kenya -- rare destinations for Western travelers in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Highlights include an abundance of images of the Soviet Union and Israel, and images of Capetown documenting the apartheid years. All of the films are color, and a few include sound elements such as narration, music, or even sound effects. The collection also includes a handful of home movies that document family trips and events such as graduations and birthdays, and one film that appears to be a professionally produced documentary about the Soviet Union. The films are complemented by over 4,000 color slides of still images taken during their travels. The collection, arranged chronologically, also includes Digital Betacam preservation tapes, DVD masters and DVD use copies.

A hand-made photograph album by US Army Chaplain Morris C. McEldowney, dated 1954-1955. The album contains 190 photographs laid down on 172 stiff cardboard sheets, 7.5 x 4 inches, plus 6 small Japanese color woodblock views laid down on three more pages. The candid snapshots, with handwritten captions, are primarily of Seoul, Korea, the 8th Army military base, and the surrounding area. It also contains photograhs of Pusa, Korea, Tokyo, and Sendai, Japan.

Moses family papers, 1859-1951 14 Linear Feet (10 boxes)

Papers relate to a Jewish family originally from South Carolina and Georgia, and residents of New York City, whose members included drama critic and journalist Montrose Jonas Moses, his wife Dorothy Herne and other Herne sisters, and his sister, author Belle Moses. The collection primarily consists of manuscripts written by Belle Moses, as well as her research notes and letters. Notes, clippings, diaries, letters, and other papers of Montrose J. Moses and Dorothy Herne also represent a substantial portion. There are also five scrapbooks assembled by the Herne sisters. Also included are family and travel photographs, nitrate negatives, physician Montefiore Moses' visiting books, and memorabilia such as pins, calling cards, programs, and other keepsakes. Print materials include literature, poetry, and textbooks published around the turn of the century.

Moses T. Cilley essays on natural theology, theism, and creationism versus evolution, 1861 and undated 0.1 Linear Feet (1 volume) 1 v.

Methodist minister who preached in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Born in Salisbury, Mass., in 1830, to Jonathan Cilley and Abigail Fowler; married Sarah A. Eaton in 1849, and died after 1910. Collection comprises a volume, 250 pages, filled with handwritten religious essays (called themes or lectures, which are sometimes separated into chapters), on the topics of natural theology, theism, and creationism versus evolution. Whether the essays were written to support the author's theological studies, as material to be presented in convocations, or in response to the scientific revelations or debates of the time is unclear; however, a reader with initials "J.W.M" read, notated, and provided short comments on the contents. Cilley provided a few ink drawings, including a chart showing the geologic strata and time periods, as well as an image of the human heart. Many essays contain citations to theological writings of the period. Among the many philosophers and writers covered are Aristotle, Benedict Spinoza, Thomas Hobbes, d'Alembart, Diderot, Voltaire, Alexander Pope, David Hume, Hugh Miller, and Enoch Pond.

The Munford and Ellis families were connected through the marriage of George Wythe Munford and Elizabeth Throwgood Ellis in 1838. The earliest papers from the Munford family center around William Munford (1775-1825) of the first generation, George Wythe Munford (1803-1882) of the second generation, and the children of George Wythe Munford, notably Thomas Taylor Munford (1831-1918), Sallie Radford (Munford) Talbott (1841-1930), Lucy Munford and Fannie Ellis Munford. Papers of the Ellis family begin with those of Charles Ellis, Sr. (1772-1840), Richmond merchant; his wife, Margaret (Nimmo) Ellis (1790-1877); and his brother, Powhatan Ellis (1790-1863), jurist, U.S. senator, and diplomat. Later materials include letters from Thomas Harding Ellis (1814-1898), son of Charles and Margaret Ellis, as well as some materials from their other children and grandchildren. Collection contains family, personal, and business papers of three generations of the Munford and the Ellis families of Virginia. The papers contain information on politics, literary efforts, social life and customs, economic conditions, and military questions principally in nineteenth century Virginia. Muriel Henderson (1920-2009) and her husband, Lawrence (Larry), were originally from Tacoma, Washington. They served as missionaries to Angola from 1947 to 1969 and eventually retired to Durham in the 1990s. The bulk of the papers relate Muriel Henderson's personal and family history (for the Woods and Henderson families). She lived with her husband Lawrence (Larry) Henderson in Angola doing missionary work from 1947 to 1969 and the collection includes many materials from this time (including journals and letters). Henderson kept in touch with people from Angola throughout the remainder of her life. The collection also includes many materials documenting her family's life in the early 20th century in the Pacific Northwest (mostly in or around Tacoma, Washington), including photographs, diaries, children's drawings and letters, school report cards, diplomas, letters, recollections (many typed) from family members, and ledgers of household expenses. Collection comprises a set of 48 color photographs, 13 reproductions of historic postcards, and several introductory panels, from a project by photographer and artist Nate Larson entitled "Map of All the Railroads," inspired by H.V. The 13x19 inch digital color photographs, taken in 2015, explore social and economic aspects of thirteen railroad-centered cities and towns identified in Poor's publication, and their progress and potential future. Nathan Carter Newbold family papers, 1848-1952 and undated 3.5 Linear Feet

North Carolina family active in education, law enforcement, farming, and slavery. The bulk of the papers relate to Nathan Carter Newbold and his relatives, including his father William A. Newbold and grandfather William Newbold (Sheriff of Pasquotank County, North Carolina), his first wife Mabel Wooten, and his second wife Eugenia Bradsher. Nathan Carter Newbold was the Director of the Division of Negro Education for the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction from 1913-1950. The collection includes personal and professional correspondence, photographs, financial and property records dating from the 1840s, and recorded speeches given at Nathan Carter Newbold's retirement dinner. Some photographs have been identified as being of South Carolina during the late 19th century-early 20th century, which include portraits, street scenes (in Charleston), sail boats, as well as a few photographs of people of color, including photographs of "Lascar Sailors."Some photographs are of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point during the 1890s. Many of the legal and financial papers were generated by Nathan Carter Newbold's father and grandfather. The bulk of the correspondence relates to Nathan Carter Newbold's role as an administrator for North Carolina public schools and to his tenure as the Director of the Division of Negro Education during segregation and Jim Crow.

Collection comprises a manuscript booklet (stitched into contemporary wrappers, approx. 7-1/4 x 4-1/2 inches, 8 pgs.) likely begun and maintained by Bradley in 1833 in order to practice his handwriting. In addition, he maintained a record of itinerant preachers serving at New Lisbon Church (New Lisbon, N.Y.?), including the Bible text that served as the basis for the 18 sermons recorded, as well as the preacher's denomination. Preachers listed include "Christians" John H. Currier, Sarah Hedges, and Reuben Bergis; Methodist elders Brownell and Brown; and Baptist elder Amner. There are no dates provided for each sermon. There is also a small ink diagram on the inside wrapper explaining a solar eclipse.

Nathan Ockman programs collection, circa 1949-2006 1 Linear Feet

Nathan Ockman was born on December 29, 1926 in New York City. As a child in the 1930s, he was brought by his parents to an event that featured pioneering choreographers in modern dance, among them Anna Sokolow and Sophie Maslow. Though he received no formal dance training himself, this childhood exposure to modern dance sparked a lifelong passion for dance spectatorship. The collection contains the dance-related memorabilia (circa 1949-2006) saved by Nathan Ockman. Materials include performance programs and newspaper clippings, which are arranged chronologically. Many of the materials are annotated by Mr. Ockman.

National Biscuit Company photograph album, 1900-1935 0.6 Linear Feet

The National Biscuit Company was founded in 1898, the product of a merger among the American Biscuit and Manufacturing Company, the New York Biscuit Company, and the United States Baking Company. The new conglomerate was headquartered in New York City with 114 bakeries across the United States. Over the next several decades the company grew by acquiring companies such as the F.H. Bennett Company, maker of Milk-Bone Pet Products, and the Shredded Wheat Company, maker of Triscuit Wafers and Shredded Wheat Cereal. The name "Nabisco" was first used as the name for a cracker introduced in 1901, but the corporate name did not change to Nabisco until 1971. The Uneeda Biscuit, National Biscuit Company's first packaged cracker, was the subject of the company's first million-dollar advertising campaign. Collection comprises a photograph album containing 129 gelatin silver prints and two cyanotypes by anonymous photographers. The majority of the photographs feature storefront and grocery displays of National Biscuit Company cookies and crackers, including Oreos, Animal Crackers, Fig Newtons, Graham Crackers, Uneeda Biscuits, among others. Several of the photographs indicate that the images were taken in Buffalo, New York, and many document the National Biscuit Company's sales force there, posed formally, attending sales meetings, or engaged together in leisure activities. The album also contains photographs of horse drawn delivery wagons, a display for Milk Bone dog biscuits, children dressed in costumes that promote company products, and a classroom of children "playing store."

The National Cash Register Company was founded in 1884 in Dayton, Ohio. by John H. Patterson. Maker of the first mechanical cash registers and predecessor of NCR Corporation. Collection includes a binder (56 pgs.) containing advertisements for a cash register that automatically computes change, probably intended for use by representatives in the company's sales office. There is also a printed brochure for National's change dispenser machine and two store signs concerning sales receipts. Topics include the accuracy of the new machine and resulting sales records, times savings for retail clerks, and customer satisfaction. Additionally, a series of booklets aimed at retail store merchants address topics including advertising, store layouts, cost controlling, show windows and store displays, and promotional sales. National Council of Negro Women "Hunger USA" program ephemera, 1968-1970s 0.1 Linear Feet

The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was founded in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune to empower Black women. Hunger USA was an NCNW program that began in 1968 and worked to alleviate hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity in Mississippi and Alabama by establishing community-run food centers and farms. Collection includes circular letters, leaflets, and brochures sent by the NCNW to raise awareness about hunger and malnutrition in the Deep South and NCNW efforts to alleviate it. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture and as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

The National Press Company was a Chicago-based printing and advertising company active in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The company specialized in promotional materials and printed novelties (such as matchbook covers, calendars and postcards) produced for political figures and small businesses. The National Press Company Advertising and Promotional Materials Collection includes promotional pamphlets; brochures of available product lines; order forms; a brochure for matchbooks featuring Black models; and a handbook for salesmen associated with the National Press Company. Nell Irvin Painter papers, 1793-2021 and undated, bulk 1876-2007 186.5 Linear Feet

Nell Irvin Painter is a scholar, teacher, and writer in 19th- and 20th-century American and African American history who has been a faculty member of Harvard, Princeton, and the Universities of North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Collection spans the years 1793-2019, with the bulk of the material dating between 1876 and 2007, and contains correspondence, research notes, photocopies of original documents, manuscripts, publication proofs, syllabi, department memoranda, records of her speaking engagements, photographs, personal journals, papers, and photographs, many varying audiovisual formats, and computer diskettes.
