The early 1839 materials largely relate to negotiations and contracts with a railroad company; by summer of 1839, the clippings document the arrival and devestation of a yellow fever epidemic, which severely impacted Augusta and led to hundreds of deaths. A clipping with names of the deceased is included in the scrapbook. The 1841 clippings relate to Augusta's commemorations of Alfred Cumming's leadership during the crisis.

Volume consists of Alfred Cumming's journal documenting his trip from St. Louis to Fort Benson (in present-day Montana) to negotiate a treaty between the U.S. government and the Blackfeet tribal council. Entries are recorded daily, with varying levels of detail, and include his movements, the scenery, hunting and tracking herds of buffalo and other wildlife. Cumming describes different tribes and individuals he encountered or travelled with, and their mode of travel.
