Frederick Cowper was an educator, born in Island Pond, Vermont, March 3, 1883. He received his B.A.,1906, and M.A., 1911, at Trinity College, Hartford, CT, and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, 1920. Cowper also received an L.H.D, from Trinity College in 1956. He was the author of, The Sources, Date and Style of Ille et Galeron, by Gautier d'Arras, (1922), and other works. Cowper was a professor of Romance Languages, Trinity College, Durham, NC, 1918-1924, Duke University, 1924-1952. He married Mary O. Thompson, (1881-1968) in 1909. Dr. Cowper died in Durham on January 24, 1978. There were no children. This collection contains correspondence, diaries, manuscripts, printed material, photographs and film, with bulk dates 1920-1970, produced or acquired by Professor Cowper.

Courtland Cox (1941- ) is an African American civil rights activist, former member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and a manager and co-owner of Drum and Spear Bookstore in Washington, D.C. His papers consist of materials related to the Drum and Spear Bookstore and associated organizations, folders related to his tenure as the Secretary General of the Sixth Pan-African Congress in Tanzania, and subject files and audiovisual materias related to the civil rights movement in the South during the 1960s. Audiovisual materials consist largely of oral history interviews with veterans of the civil rights movement. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Personal papers, correspondence, and writings of Earnest Sevier Cox, a white supremacist who advocated for the separation of the races and supported the Back to Africa movement in the early 20th century.

The holdings within this collection are from the files of Harry W. Cox, accountant to Duke Farms throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The topics in this collection are widely varied although they are primarily focused on the personal and business accounting activities of Doris Duke, her estates, and her charitable foundations. Materials included are business correspondence and memoranda, tax returns, invoices, contracts, bills, and legal documents.

Banker and manufacturer of High Point, N.C. May have been a Quaker. The Jonathan E. Cox Papers chiefly consist of the business records of a banker and manufacturer from High Point, North Carolina. Records date from 1885-1938 and include many boxes of business and personal correspondence, chiefly letters to Cox; and a series of manuscript volumes, including journals, daybooks, order books, trial balance books, ledgers, profit-and-loss accounts, bill books, inventory records, rent book, check stubs, mill contracts, a letter book, and an account book of Joseph D. Cox. There are few personal items, but there is some biographical information on Cox's daughter, Clara I. Cox, a Quaker also living in High Point, who was active in civic and humanitarian affairs in that city.

Resita Cox is an award-winning documentary film director and producer, and creator of the documentary film, Freedom Hill. The collection features video files related to Freedom Hill including the film, interviews, and the student documentaries from the Freedom Hill Youth Media Camp. The film examines the community of Princeville, North Carolina and the effects of climate change, environmental racism on life for its 2000 residents. The media camp video files feature work from the inaugural cohort of student documentary filmmakers. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Major themes in the collection include journalism, human rights abuses, the Argentine Dirty War/El Proceso, the disappeared (los desaparecidos), censorship, human rights in Latin America, and Jews in Argentina.
