Fowler family papers, 1779-1870 4.2 Linear Feet (9 Boxes; 1 volume)

Included in this collection are records, 1779-1809, of a mercantile business run by Stephen Fowler, Fairfield, Connecticut, and after 1805 of Trenton, Jones Co., North Carolina, which engaged in trade between New York and North Carolina. Stephen's son Joseph about 1820 engaged in the export of lumber, naval stores, tobacco, grain, and blackeyed peas from North Carolina to Bermuda; and later in coastal trade from New Bern to New York. There is also correspondence relating to his duties as U.S. deputy marshal, Pamlico District, N.C., 1831-1860. Family correspondence predominates between 1840 and 1860. For the Civil War years there are many letters from Joseph S. Fowler, Jr., written largely from the Confederate Commissary Office, Kinston, N.C. The collection also includes two Yale university diplomas; a ledger of Joseph S. Fowler, (1817-1834), 1836, 1866, 1 vol.; financial and legal papers, 1800-1860; the logbook of Absalom Fulford kept on the Neuse River lightship, 1845-1849, recording weather and the passage of ships; and business letters to DeWitt C. Fowler and Brother, Bay River (N.C.) general store and liquor merchants.

Wallace Fowlie papers, 1911-1998 and undated 5 Linear Feet 516 Items

Writer, critic, translator, and faculty member at Duke University specializing in modern French literature. The Wallace Fowlie Papers span the years 1911 to 1998 and consist mainly of correspondence sent to Fowlie, but also texts from Fowlie's personal library, publications on French literature authored by Fowlie, typescript and handwritten drafts by Fowlie, amd clippings pertaining to Fowlie's career. A significant portion of the correspondence comprises exchanges between Fowlie and Thomas and Kit Foster. These letters mainly address personal and family matters (health issues, vacations and meeting with mutual friends), but also cover projects Fowlie was working on, teaching positions accepted and rejected and class progress, and other matters of professional relevance. There is also a folder of correspondence with Fowlie, almost entirely in French, that was maintained by John M. Dunaway, a Romance Languages professor at Mercer College in Georgia. It includes a few color photographs. Other smaller amounts of correspondence come from Robert Heslen, a former student of Fowlie, and well-known writers/artists including René Char, Jean Cocteau, André Gide, Alexis Léger (Saint-Jean Perse), Marianne Moore, Anaïs Nin, and others, discussing literary matters and their writings and careers. There are letters from Fowlie to Walter Muther. A folder of general correspondence contains single letters from a variety of colleagues and friends. Selections from Fowlie's library are sorted into works and translations by Fowlie, and works he used privately or for his own research.

John Hope Franklin was an African American historian specializing in Southern and African American history. The papers document his entire career as well as his personal life and political interests: his prolific writings on African American and Southern history; his role as a mentor and colleague, including his time as professor at Duke University; his role in associations such as Phi Beta Kappa, the American Historical Association, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and others; his participation in the civil rights movement, including his work with the NAACP Legal and Educational Defense Fund, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and Justice Thurgood Marshall; and his engagement with numerous civic, community, and educational organizations such as the Board of Foreign Scholarships and Fisk University's Board of Trustees. There is also a significant amount of material from Franklin's work on President Clinton's Advisory Board for the President's Initiative on Race in 1997 and 1998. Items in the collection include files of correspondence in original order; research sources and notes; writings by and about Franklin; materials relating to family history; papers and diaries of other family members, including his father, and wife, Aurelia; printed material; event folders; many informal and publicity photographs; video and sound recordings; and awards and other memorabilia.

Collection comprises twenty-five black and white gelatin silver 16x20 inch exhibit prints, representing a larger body of work on contemporary Iowa rural culture. The images portray a changing Midwest of vanishing towns and transformed landscapes. Scenes include cemeteries, slaughterhouses, farms, abandoned grain elevators, and fields. Individuals inhabiting the scenes include young people at leisure, fishermen on the Mississippi, hunters in fields, veterans on Memorial Day, Amish families, as well as more recent arrivals to Iowa, Lubavitcher Hasidic Jews at prayer and migrant workers in the fields and at home. The prints are housed in exhibit mats. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

It also includes materials related to Jewish students at Duke, the discussion around a mikveh in the Freeman Center, Hillel-Center for Jewish Life relations, the merging of the Center for Jewish Life and Duke Hillel, the Chronicle newspaper's Holocaust denial ad controversy, and events on campus.

Freewater Productions Films, 1967-2003 and undated 55 Linear Feet

Freewater Films is a student-run programming committee within the Duke University Union (DUU) responsible for both screening and producing films. Film exhibitions have included weekly and summer series, as well as special event screenings featuring particular directors, actors, or genres. As a film production resource, Freewater has provided grants of film stock, equipment, processing, lab work, and technical instruction to members of the Duke community. The collection includes paper records and various film and tape elements produced by Duke students in the making of their original films. Formats include 35mm film, 16mm film, 8mm film, Betacam SP cassettes, audio cassettes, VHS cassettes, DAT tapes, as well as DVDs. The collection also includes some paper documentation associated with particular films, as well as publicity materials and subject files. Film topics include North Carolina environmental issues, poverty in Durham, political rallies, faculty interviews, campus construction, and student performances. Also included are fictional films on psychological, philosophical, or romantic themes, which feature familiar campus locations such as Perkins Library, the Duke Gardens, the Chapel, or the Duke Hospital. The collection also includes compilation tapes of entries from the annual Hal Kammerer Film Competition, as well as film experiments undertaken during Freewater film workshops. The collection is organized chronologically, then alphabetically by film title. In cases where the creators had grouped multiple reels of a particular film into a small box or a can, these groupings were denoted as reel 1-3 of 3, etc. Where available, synposes written on film cans were summarized and included in this finding aid. The majority of these synposes were written by Freewater Productions participant Benjamin Epps.

Fuller Brush Company Fort Wayne District sales literature collection, 1941-1948 0.2 Linear Feet

Retailer of private-label household goods, founded in Hartford, Conn. in 1906 by Alfred Fuller. Collection consists of articles; catalogs; memos; newsletters; sales brochures and other printed materials distributed to sales agents primarily in the Fort Wayne sales district. Many of the items bear the name of William Levy, Fort Wayne area sales manager, or Emil "Doc" Joy, who was the manager for the Chicago sales region to which the Fort Wayne operation belonged. Materials address sales advice; ways to approach prospects during door-to-door sales efforts; promotional sales drives; and economic and community concerns related to the impact of World War II. Elias Fulp (1859-1924) was a physician and pharmacist from Walnut Cove, North Carolina. This collection consists mainly of the financial records of Elias Fulp's medical practice in Stokes County, North Carolina. It also includes a small amount of family and business correspondence (1869-1902), as well as legal and financial records (1903-1906) related to Fulp's role as trustee during Sidney H. Reid's bankruptcy proceedings. One financial account book (1870-1876) contains details of estates and guardianships administered by L. A. Paschall of Granville County, NC.

Funkhouser family papers, 1786-1941, bulk 1836-1908 6 Linear Feet

The Funkhouser family lived in Virginia with members moving West with the expansion of the Unites States. Other Funkhouser descendants moved into Ohio, Maryland and New Jersey. The collection contains correspondence, diary and other papers, chiefly 1836-1908, of the Funkhouser family of Mount Jackson, Va. including Andrew Funkhouser. Topics discussed include conditions in the West, opposition to slavery, and economic conditions in the U.S. after 1837; Civil War letters discuss camp life of Union and Confederate soldiers and the state of the South. Post-war letters are mainly personal. Includes a diary (1863) kept by G. H. Snapp, a minister of the United Brethren in Christ Church, telling of religious life among soldiers and civilians.

Businessman, philanthropist, and chairman of The Fuqua Companies and Fuqua Enterprises. The J.B. Fuqua Papers span the years 1929-2006. The collection is separated into two divisions according to place of origin: Fuqua's business office and his home office. The office files document Fuqua Industries and The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, and include annual reports, reading files and general business papers, as well as clippings, periodicals, and copies of articles about J. B. Fuqua and his businesses. The home office files primarily document Fuqua's early career and contain files for the various businesses he acquired. A large component of video cassette recordings chiefly contain speeches and programs related to Fuqua and the Duke University Fuqua School of Business.

Woolworth's was a discount retail chain founded by Frank W. Woolworth in 1879 in Lancaster, Pa. now doing business as Foot Locker, Inc. Collection is comprised of a photograph album depicting shop window and department store floor displays featured at the Spring Convention of the Woolworth Chicago District. Displays feature a variety of goods including candies and confections, cosmetics, sewing supplies, publishing and printing, and women's clothing. Gaess Outdoor was a family-owned outdoor advertising company founded in the 1930s in northern New Jersey, serving the New Jersey-Metropolitan New York market. It was acquired in 1997 by Universal Outdoor, a subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications, Inc. The Gaess Outdoor Advertising Photographs collection spans the decades of the 1950s and 1960s and includes black-and-white photographs and negatives of painted and blank billboard structures, locations, proposed locations and competitors' billboards. George Gage (1831-1903) and his wife Sarah Marshall Ely (1834-1909) lived in Beaufort, S.C. during the Reconstruction Era. George was a civil engineer who held various positions for the town of Beaufort. Sarah worked as a teacher in the Freedmen's Bureau schools. This collection consists of a journal written by Sarah and three letterbooks of outgoing correspondence by George.

Collection contains the business papers of Joseph Gales, Jr., and William W. Seaton, editors of the National Intelligencer. Correspondence pertains to subscriptions, advertising, announcements and letters to the editors. Some prominent names appear in the subscription correspondence. Of particular interest are fifty-six transcripts of Congressional speeches, resolutions, and motions. These were presented for publication and are marked for editing. Among the authors of the manuscripts are Henry Clay, James K. Polk, Martin Van Buren, and Daniel Webster. Many are signed. Part of the Harry L. and Mary K. Dalton Collection.

Sidney D. Gamble photographs, 1906-2007 15.25 Linear Feet

The Sidney D. Gamble collection consists primarily of contact sheets, hand-colored glass slides, 35mm duplicate slides, contact prints, negatives, and other photographic formats documenting Gamble's four visits to China from 1908 to 1932. In total, there are over 5,000 unique images in the collection depicting urban and rural life, economic conditions, public events, agriculture, religious statuary, architecture, and the countryside. In addition to photographs of China, the collection contains a handful of images captured by Gamble from Japan and Korea and images captured by David Gamble in the western United States, circa 1906. Also included are artifacts, audiovisual materials, including moving images captured by Gamble in China from 1926 to 1933, scrapbooks, a small selection of Gamble's personal papers, and records of the Sidney D. Gamble Foundation for China Studies, which relate to the exhibition of Gamble's photographs in China and the United States, 1980s-2000s. William T. Gannaway papers, 1853-1906 2.4 Linear Feet

William T. Gannaway was a white educator, college administrator, and farmer. From 1857 to 1892, he taught at Trinity College in Randolph County, North Carolina, and served as president pro tempore of the college from 1863 to 1865. The collection largely consists of grade books and account books containing the expenses and financial transactions for the Gannaway family and the college. Some of the account books contain the expenses for Cherokee Industrial School and the names, payments, and services of Black people who worked for Gannaway and Trinity College after the Civil War. Also includes a small amount of correspondence and notes.

Frank W. Gardner served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was killed in action in Lorraine, France, in 1944. The collection consists primarily of handwritten letters Frank W. Gardner sent home to his wife, Jennie, between 1941 and 1944, during his military service in World War II. Also present are some letters Jennie Gardner mailed to Frank around the time of his death, which document her life on the home front in Arlington, Mass. The collection also contains some letters from the United States War Department, greeting cards, postcards, and photographs. Materials range in date from 1938 to 1947.

Isabella S. Gardner diary, 1852-1874 and undated 0.6 Linear Feet (8 items)

Collection comprises a printed 1853 "West of England Pocket Book or Gentleman's Diary with an almanack" presented to Isabella Gardner by her husband in 1852. Gardner filled the volume with routine diary entries, usually briefly mentioning the weather and the health of family members, whether they were any visitors, along with any travel or activities and with whom the family took tea or had dinner. More unusual entries have to do with a tooth extraction, the birth of Frank, and a fire at their home. Entries became less frequent from October to December 1853. Also, several pages list household accounts and amounts paid, usually for food and servant salaries. Several items post-dating the diary were laid-in, including four brief letters to and from family members, a recipe for a throat tonic, a note with dates of ancestors, and a religious flier. A child later made drawings in available spaces on pages of the diary.

George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; the Miscellaneous Papers Series; and several series of additions.

Collection consists of 60 small black-and-white photographs dating roughly from the 1930s to the 1950s, belonging to Amy Ashwood Garvey, feminist and activist who traveled extensively and lived in West Africa, where most if not all of these images originated. The majority of the images are portraits of Amy Ashwood Garvey's many male and female acquaintances in Africa, who include female friends, politicians, heads of states, lawyers, and students. Other subjects include locales and native inhabitants of Nigeria and other unidentified places; gatherings such as meetings, a funeral, and a public hanging; and street and market scenes. Although there are photographs with inscriptions, names, and descriptions of the scenes, the majority are unlabeled; the few dates that appear are from the late 1940s. The travel snapshots are likely to have been taken by Amy Ashwood Garvey, but there are images that were sent to her by individuals as mementos, and some images of her taken by another unidentified person. Jill Gay papers, 1977-2006 2 Linear Feet

Jill Gay is an analyst and consultant that has worked with NGOs, foundations, and governmental and international organizations on projects related to women, health, reproductive issues, and policy. In 1981, Gay and Isabel Letelier founded the Third World Women's Project (TWWP) at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS); Gay was the Associate Director of the project until 1986. The project was designed to educate American audiences about issues in "third world" countries from the perspectives of female human rights activists living in those countries. The collection includes materials about twenty-five participants mostly from Latin America between 1982-1986 such as program evaluations, itineraries, reports, and clippings; writings by Jill Gay; files on the TWPP and IPS; posters and other ephemera related to the Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Award held by the IPS; and other assorted materials between 1977-2006. Collection comprises the entirety of William Gedney's photographic career, beginning with his student years at Pratt Institute in the 1950s to his early death in 1989. The materials reveal Gedney's intense and meticulous dedication to his work, and his interest in street photography, portraiture, night photography, and the study of human nature. His earliest serious project was undertaken in Kentucky, where he stayed with a coal-miner's family for several weeks in 1964 and again in 1972. His work took him across the U.S. several times, with extensive photographic projects in Chicago, Detroit, Pennsylvania, South Dakota - particularly the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, and southern and northern California. During these trips, as well as in New York City, he also photographed well-known composers. Fascinated by human group dynamics, he photographed parades, hippies and other street people, and crowds. He also traveled to Kolkata (Calcutta) and Varanasi (Benares), India, England, Ireland, Paris, and Amsterdam. The collection offers roughly 76,000 unique images represented by the over 2000 contact sheets, with over 19,000 selected images in the form of work prints and 1466 exhibit-quality large prints. Other formats include slides, a complete set of master negatives, and personal snapshots. The breadth of these materials offers deep insights into Gedney's editorial process and artistic vision. Additional perspectives on his life and work can be found in his many notebooks and journals; artwork; handmade books; correspondence files; financial, legal and medical records; memorabilia; audiocassettes; and teaching materials. Pontiac "Indians of North America" posters, 1954 1.0 Linear Feet

Pontiac was a division of automobile manufacturer General Motors from 1926-2009, based in Pontiac, Mich. The "Indians of North America" posters were part of a larger promotional campaign tying together mid-century American popular interest in Indigenous American peoples and Pontiac's two major Indian-themed automobile lines, the Chieftain (in production 1949-1958, after which it was renamed the Catalina) and the Star Chief (produced from 1954-1966). The posters feature color lithography depicting scenes from American and Indigenous history: Cliff dwellers; the Lewis and Clark expedition with Sacagawea; Thanksgiving narrative featuring Tisquantum (Squanto); Ojibwa (Chippewa) fishing in the St. Marys River. Lumber company founded in 1902 by Andrew and Nat Gennett, headquartered in Georgia and South Carolina, later in Asheville, N.C. The two Gennett brothers Nat and Andrew, founders of the company, were part of the effort to establish the South's national forest system. Subjects covered by materials in the collection include Civil War reminiscences, life at Nashville and at Tulane and Vanderbilt universities shortly after the war, the lumber business after 1890, economic conditions in the U.S. after 1900, forest conservation, U.S. politics and foreign relations during World War I, and travel in Europe after the war.

The David Gordon George Papers span the years 1919 to 1976, with the bulk of the collection dated between 1935 and 1965, and are organized into the Correspondence, Personal Files, Printed Materials and Writings, Photographic Materials, and Subject Files Series. The collection consists primarily of correspondence and files related to George's involvement in a variety of political and social movements, documenting his early involvement in grassroots socialist and leftist democratic organizing and electoral reform work, decades of involvement with national and regional labor organizations, and his late-life support of anti-communist and socially conservative politics, including segregationist platforms. His complex views on the political and social status of African Americans in the South, particularly in Virginia, are documented in his writings and correspondence. Walter B. Gibson (1897-1985) was a professional magician and author, who often wrote under the name Maxwell Grant, and is credited with defining and popularizing the pulp hero, The Shadow. The collection includes: Two Shadow story outlines, one from 1943 and another from 1980, which was Gibson's last Shadow story; 97 radio scripts from Strange, a seemingly lost 15-minute program that Gibson hosted in 1955; an unproduced television proposal, Mike Regan, Confidential Investigator, circa the mid 1950s; and two bookplates featuring a black and white image of The Shadow.

Gillette World Series sales promotion materials, 1953-1954 2.0 Linear Feet

Gillette is a manufacturer of safety razors and shaving equipment, founded by King Camp Gillette and partners in 1901. The collection consists of a set of "World Series Record Books" (edited by Hy Turkin) given away during the sales promotion campaign surrounding Major League Baseball's World Series in 1953 and 1954 in English and French versions, along with a flip chart presentation for Gillette retailers and sales representatives that features spokes-character "Sharpie the Parrot" among the illustrations. George W. Gillette (1888-1971) was a native of Onslow Co., N.C.; officer in the Army Corps of Engineers; executive director of the N.C. State Ports Authority. As a consultant, Gillette was associated with projects worldwide through the World Bank, the United Nations, and private agencies. Collection is chiefly papers and letters concerning the later period of Gillette's life. An extensive correspondent, Gillette expounded his personal beliefs and philosophy with a wide circle of friends and associates, including prominent civic and military figures such as General Raymond Wheeler, senators B. Everett Jordan and Sam Ervin, congressman Alton Lennon, and governors Linwood Holton and Terry Sanford.

Mine owners and speculators residing in Cid and Thomasville (Davidson County), North Carolina. Collection consist chiefly of correspondence, along with wills, deeds, and other personal, business, and legal papers of Mrs. Alberta Stith Jones Gillingham and of her brother, Fred H. Stith, mining speculator, of Cid and Thomasville (Davidson County), North Carolina. Most of the papers are Mrs. Gillingham's and center around the operation of gold, silver, copper, sulphur, and zinc mines in the Cid district of Davidson County, North Carolina, and the complications caused in family relationships because of contested inheritances and property rights. Alberta Gillingham was also a music composer, writer, and teacher; one of her compositions, "General Harrison's inaugural quick-step," was transferred to the post-bellum sheet music collection. Includes materials concerning Furnifold Simmon's campaign for U.S. Senate in 1930, letters from Stith's children in Trinity College (now Duke University), and correspondence between Mrs. Gillingham and William H. Bailey, a lawyer of Charlotte, North Carolina.

The collection consists of letters written to Charles Gilpin between the 1830s to 1874, many from British politicians, social reformers, and abolitionists. Topics include capital punishment, Hungarian exiles, parliamentary elections, foreign relations, prisons, Poor laws, and the abolition of slavery. Quakers are prominent, but the Society of Friends was not discussed. The content is varied and represents his social and political interests. The publishing business rarely appears in the correspondence. Correspondents include Elihu Burritt, William Lloyd Garrison, Joseph John Gurney, Samuel Gurney, Victor Hugo, Charles Mackay, Eliza Meteyard, and Grace Greenwood (Sara Jane Lippincott).
