Herman Snow was a Unitarian minister and spiritualist, as well as a religious book and newspaper agent. Collection comprises 41 items, including 36 letters written to Snow and five manuscripts. Many of the items were annotated by Herman Snow in purple pencil. There are two letters concerning the First Ecclesiastical Society of Brooklyn, Connecticut, and Snow's two-page handwritten memorial of his service there, 1845-1846; two 1866 letters on a white school in North Carolina and the "Freedmen's & Union Society, and the establishment of white and freedman schools in Wilmington, N.C.;" letters from spiritualists Seldes J. Finney, William Denton, A. E. Newton, and H. H. Brown; a 1888 letter from Mary Gunning regarding spiritualism and science; an 1892 letter containing a prospectus for the New World, a religious serial; as well as an 1892 letter from Richard Hodgson of the American Branch of the Society for Psychical Research. Manuscripts include an 1850 resolution for Snow's separation from the Rockford Unitarian congregation, the 1863 certificate issued to Snow by the Harvard University Theological School, and a letter of introduction authorizing Snow as a business agent for the CHRISTIAN EXAMINER.

Ann Barr Snitow was a feminist activist, writer, and professor of literature and gender studies at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts. The collection includes teaching files, subject files, materials documenting Snitow's involvement in various feminist activist groups and organizations, Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp, her work with Ellen Willis, feminist publications in Eastern European languages, writings, speeches, correspondence, interviews, Carol Jacobsen films, and recordings of Snitow's feminist radio shows on WBAI in New York.

The SNCC Legacy Project (SLP) was founded in 2010 to preserve and extend the legacy of SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee). The SNCC Legacy Project records have administrative files, budget and program materials, and correspondence between board members, including Courtland Cox and Larry Rubin, documenting the activities of the SLP.

Robert Smythe is a natural resources consultant and an officer of the North Carolina Chapter of the Sierra Club. Collection consists of correspondence, reports, clippings, and publications chiefly relating to Smythe's work in North Carolina with the Sierra Club. Includes information about environmental issues in North Carolina such as air and water quality, waste management, energy conservation, and land use, as well as the Club's efforts to influence the North Carolina Legislature on environmental matters.

Lawyer and U.S. Senator, 1950-1953, from Raleigh (Wake Co.), N.C. Personal, political and professional papers, including correspondence, notes and speeches, financial papers, clippings, printed material, pictures, and other miscellaneous papers. The major portion of the collection consists of personal papers; the office files from his years as U.S. Senator, much of which is routine correspondence; files kept while Smith was president of the American Bar Association, 1945-1946; papers relating to other legal organizations; and files pertaining to his service as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Duke University, 1947-1953.

William Doddridge Smith was a land owner, Justice of the Peace, and attorney in Clarke County, Virginia. The collection is mainly comprised of diaries, account books, ledgers, and an autograph album from several members of his extended family and covers multiple generations who lived at various times in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Ohio. Surnames represented are: Page, Smith, Thompson, and Williams. Three of the diaries are written by H.M. Williams (b.1842), who traveled to Cincinnati as a Christian missionary in 1882. Her diaries record her daily activities such as visiting the sick, attending meetings of various social and religious societies, and teaching Sunday school. One notebook was written by Mary Page Thompson (b. 1869) while she attended State Normal School in Baltimore (Md.) 1889, and includes notes on biology, psychology, and religion, including notes on a discussion of Christian missionary work in China. There are several items relating to Philip Doddridge Thompson (b. 1838), a Christian minister who worked in several states and one ledger that indicates that William Doddridge Smith was a Justice of the Peace in Clarke County, Virginia in 1866. The collection also includes one folder of indentures, deeds, and wills, the bulk of which was created during 1816-1854 and is related to the business and legal dealings of William Doddridge Smith and his father, Edward Jaquelin Smith, who were active in Virginia and West Virginia. There is also one folder of correspondence, photographs, clippings, and ephemera.

Correspondence, writings, and printed materials relating to Smith's advocacy for the abolition of slavery in Great Britain and in Britain's colonies in the West Indies. Collection contains notes, statistics, and research on the slave trade between Africa and the British West Indies; slave revolts and the conditions on sugar plantations in the Caribbean; abolitionist tracts discussing moral, economic, and religious opposition to slavery; and diagrams of slave ships documenting conditions for enslaved people and casualty rates during transport. The bulk of the collection's correspondence is addressed to Smith. Letters of William Wilberforce and the Wilberforce family discuss personal affairs, politics, abolition, and other matters. Letters from Thomas Clarkson discuss the antislavery movement. Letters from Smith's constituents discuss politics, social conditions, parliamentary reform, British foreign trade, slavery in the West Indies, and economic conditions. Correspondents include Priscilla Buxton, Thomas Fowell Buxton, and Zachary Macaulay. Also contains a partially unpublished poem of Robert Southey entitled To the Exiled Patriots.

William Alexander Smith was a textile manufacturer and businessman of Ansonville, North Carolina. Collection includes correspondence, account books, business records, and other papers, relating to Smith's career as a merchant, cotton textile manufacturer, farmer, and investor. Includes material relating to the family's agricultural, mercantile, and milling enterprises during the antebellum period, with references to Smith's interests in education, the Protestant Episcopal Church, the Civil War, and the United Confederate Veterans, and to automobile manufacture, banking, commercial finance, cosmetics, furniture, insurance, lumbering, patent medicine, personal loans, self-propelled railway passenger cars, real estate development, tobacco processing, and the mining of gold in Alaska and Montana, copper in Arizona, and mica in North Carolina. Correspondents include Bishop Joseph Blount Cheshire, Francis Johnstone Murdoch, and George Stephens.

Planter, banker, and lawyer, of Selma, Alabama Business and personal correspondence and other papers of Washington M. Smith and the Smith family, containing information on Smith's interests in banking, law, and agriculture, on economic conditions in Alabama after 1840, public schools and their establishment in Alabama, tax collection in the Confederate States, social life and customs in Selma, economic conditions during Reconstruction, Smith's successful efforts to reestablish in New York and England his former affluency, and family affairs. Includes a series of letters of Smith's daughter, Ella, and her husband, Hilary A. Herbert. Most of the items before 1850 and after 1869 are family letters and papers.

Walter H. Smith donated this collection of Beat Literature. The majority relates to the career and life of Allen Ginsberg, a founding member of the Beat Generation. Other writers represented include Anne Waldman, Diane di Prima, and Anselm Hollo. Accessions (2009-0113) and (2009-0130) (200 items; 3.5 lin. ft.; dated 1959-2003) include books, compilations, journals, magazines, and other publications with works by and about Allen Ginsberg. Also included are posters and broadsides advertising events, readings, or publications by Ginsberg; many of these are signed. Accession (2010-0098) (25 items; 0.6 lin. ft.; dated 1950-2009) includes writings and some correspondence from Diane di Prima, Anselm Hollo, and Anne Waldman; also includes some Allen Ginsberg materials. Vernon Smith (born 1927) is a Nobel Prize winner and Professor of Economics and Law at Chapman University. This collection primarily documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, research, teaching, and professional service. It forms part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Tim Smith (born 1978) is an award-winning photographer based in Manitoba, Canada. "The Hutterites" is part of an ongoing project by Tim Smith, entitled "In The World But Not Of It", documenting the Hutterites, Anabaptists who live communally in colonies in Canada and the United States, largely removed from broader society. Materials span 2010-2024 and include 25 color prints sized 18x24 inches featuring various Hutterite colonies particularly the Deerboine Hutterite Colony in Manitoba, Canada; a directory; a Christmas program; a tiechel (headscarf); journal notes written by Smith; postcards and small ephemera related to Smith's exhibitions; and one video file showcasing cattle branding at Forty Mile Hutterite Colony in Montana, United States. Topics include family life; marriages; communal living; farmwork, ranching, and livestock; depictions of women and youth; adoption of new technology; and religious practices. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Collection contains twenty-six 16x20 inch black-and-white matted digital prints used in Smith's book, THE WEATHER AND A PLACE TO LIVE: PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE SUBURBAN WEST, published by Duke University Press (2005). Subjects include tract housing in the West, construction sites, and other suburban landscapes that convey the impact of humans on the Western environment. His work received the First Book Prize for Photography by the Honickman Foundation and the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Collection also includes CD of artist talk given by Steven Smith at the 2005 exhibit opening, "Steven Smith: Photographs of the Suburban West." Smith Papers span the years 1947 through 1982 and document Smith's work as an art director for several advertising agencies, including Norman Craig and Kummel; and Ogilvy & Mather (O&M). The materials consist primarily of sketches; paintings; photographs and contact sheets; advertising layouts and proofs; storyboards for television commercials; and house advertisements for O&M. Clients include Consolidated Cigar (El Producto and La Palina brands); Diageo (Gilbey's liquors), DuBonnet; General Foods (Maxim coffee, Gaines dog food); IBM; Maidenform; Mars; Nabisco; Rand McNally; Ronson; Schenley Distillers (Melrose liquors); and Toro. Peter Xavier Smith was a member of a Catholic family living in Norfolk, Virginia. Chiefly personal correspondence centering around a Catholic family from Norfolk, Va. Many of the letters concern student life and events at Georgetown University. There are scattered letters from U.S. Congressmen.

Nancy Lee Smith was an undergraduate student at Duke University from 1950-1954. The topics of her scrapbook include: social and academic life at Duke, women at Duke, dormitory housing, North Carolina Methodist Youth Fellowship, and Women's Student Government Association.

Marilyn Crafton Smith is a retired faculty member at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC whose collection includes documentation of the activities of the National Organization for Women, the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, feminism in Western North Carolina, and LGBT printed matter.

A native of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Margaret Taylor Smith attended Duke University from 1943-1947. After graduating with a degree in sociology, Smith and her husband relocated to Birmingham, Michigan. Smith raised four children while taking an active part in her community through volunteer work and leadership. Smith's work as a research associate studying family life became the basis for a 1987 book, Mother, I Have Something to Tell You. Smith served as the chair of the Board of Trustees of the Kresge Foundation, a national organization that awards grants to support non-profit organizations. In addition, Smith continues her commitment to Duke University by holding leadership positions on multiple boards, by acting as a founding member and chair of the Council on Women's Studies, and by enabling the creation of the Sarah W. and George N. Taylor Endowment Fund for women's leadership and the Margaret Taylor Smith Endowed Directorship for Women's Studies. The Margaret Taylor Smith Papers contain materials dating from 1918 to 2010, with the bulk dating between 1980 and 2008. The collection documents Smith's voluntarism, leadership, and philanthropic activities at Duke University, especially in women's studies; her sociological research on American families, specifically relationships between mothers and children, that resulted in the publication of a book, Mother I Have Something To Tell You; her social and family life; and her professional activities and voluntarism, particularly at the Kresge Foundation. The collection is organized into five series: Duke University, Mother, I Have Something To Tell You, Personal Papers, Professional Voluntarism, and Additions.

M. A. M. Smith was the wife of a Civil War soldier who resided in Mazeppa, Minnesota. Collection comprises a letter (1863 June 5) M. A. M. Smith wrote to a friend, discussing the conduct of the war ("What is to become of the country. How long shall or must we wait for the right man in the right place to do the wash."), politics, her psychological state, the state of her farm, and the safety of her husband. She notes, "Cares, work, weariness, the blues, dumps, without the ling, are doing their legitamate [sic] business in bringing gray hairs & wrinkles. Will be a regular "roan," ha. ha."

Collection comprises Lola Frances Wilson Smith's 920-page typescript autobiography, including Wilson and Carroll family history, focusing on the period between 1909, when her parents married, and 1944, when she gave birth to her first child. Includes an additional 36 pages of introductory material where Smith describes herself. Smith accompanies her narrative with hand-drawn maps and illustrations or photocopies of illustrative material from other sources. She also includes copies of documents (marriage licenses, government documents, certificates, etc.) obituaries, genealogical charts, newspaper articles, family photographs, and private letters. Pages 885 to 920 are included as representative of Smith's working draft for the piece.

Speculator and one of the founders of the Columbia Mining Company in Columbia Co., Ga. Collection (672 items; dated 1802-1872, bulk 1845-1872) includes personal and business letters, letterpress books (1849-1855), scattered diaries (1845-1907), miscellaneous business record books, and other papers of Smith and members of his family, mainly concerning Smith's speculative enterprises in mining, railroads, cotton planting, the Columbia Minining Co., and grain mills in Georgia, Tennessee, and other parts of the nation. The bulk of the material is of the period 1845-1872. Includes information on gold mining in Georgia and Tennessee, business conditions in the South before and after the Civil War, and the development of the railroad system in the South.

African American farmer and family of Meadowview (Washington County), Virginia. Correspondence, legal, and financial papers of several generations of a rural black family in Washington County, Va., concerning personal and family matters, men working away from home, county taxes, black societies, religious activities, insurance and other topics.

Missionary of the Methodist Episcopal Church in India from 1930 to 1940, at Lal Bagh Ashram in Lucknow. Recalled to the United States in 1940 after participating in activities supporting Indian Indepedence and opposing India's forced participation in WWII as part of the British Empire. Collection comprises a telegram (8 Dec. 1939) to Smith from Jawaharlal Nehru inviting him to a meeting, an undated black-and-white photograph of that meeting or another Smith held with Nehru and others, a letter from Nehru regarding Smith's advancing in the United States the cause of India's independence (10 Jan. 1940) and commenting on imperialism, a letter from Rabindranath Tagore urging support of India's independence (16 Jan. 1940), and an undated booklet containing an"Homage" to Mahatma Gandhi following his death.

James Austin Smith (1880-1944) was a commercial artist largely based out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The collection span the years 1903 to 1929 and undated and include hand-drawn advertisements, tracings, scrapbooks, bibliographic information, and correspondence. The collection includes advertisements for steam ship companies; spark plugs and other automotive parts; and clothing and accessories. Companies represented in the collection include the Clyde Steamship Company, the Mallory Steamship Company, Bosch (Robert Bosch Gmblt), Mosler (Spit Fire Plugs), Red Head, Mezger, Black Eagle, and Herz, and the MOTOR advertising magazine. Reverend Dr. J. Alfred Smith, Sr. is a Black minister who served as Senior Pastor at Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland, CA for several decades. He also taught for many years at the American Baptist Seminary of the West (now Berkeley School of Theology). This collection contains recorded and written sermons, teaching materials, event files, and other papers that document Smith's pastoral and teaching career. Materials in the collection document Smith's work to bridge denominational, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic divides in California and throughout the United States. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Hilrie Shelton Smith began his long association with Duke University in 1931 as Professor of Religious Education. He remained at Duke until his retirement in 1963. He H. Shelton Smith was an expert on American religious thought and was considered the dean of American ecclesiastical thought and history. His collection contains material pertaining to his life including materials such as Smith's correspondence with colleagues; the correspondence and printed reviews concerning his individual books; and his sermons, addresses, and lectures. Materials in the collection date from 1941-1983.

Gerrit Smith was a leading United States social reformer, abolitionist, politician, and philanthropist. Collection contains two letters and a letter to the editor of a newspaper, all written by Gerrit Smith in 1865 and 1867. In the letters, Smith comments upon being married ("any married man is not his own keeper") and an invitation he must reject because of his age. The topic of the letter to the editor is Smith's relationship to abolitionist John Brown.

Sea captain and naval officer, of Linwood (Delaware Co.), Pennsylvania Correspondence and other papers of Franklin E. Smith and his family, concerning Smith's various sea voyages from about 1818 to 1860, his marriage to Mary Carolina Trainer, his service in the Mexican War, his blockading activities aboard the U.S.S. Bienville during the Civil War, other events of the Civil War period, Smith's post-war life, and his conversion to Catholicism. Correspondents writing to the Smiths include Thomas F. Bayard, Henry R. Bringhurst, John M. Clayton, Charles I. Du Pont, George P. Fisher, Arthur H. Grimshaw, and Henry H. Lockwood.

Outdoor advertising billboard and sign company established approximately 1906 in Scranton, Pa. Smith Company photograph archive consists of approximately 78 photographs of billboards and outdoor signs produced by the company. Most are location shots of roadside signs; a few show angles of approach to the signs. Signs represent primarily local businesses from northern Pennsylvania to Wilmington, N.C. Baptist minister; pastor of the University Baptist Church, Austin, Texas from 1943-1969. Radio talks, drafts of sermons, sermon transcripts, and a scrapbook of clippings from Smith's time as a pastor at the University Baptist Church of Austin, Texas. Also includes rosters of University of Texas Baptist students and an article on Darwinism in Texas.

North Carolina educator and superintendent of public schools in Greensboro, N.C. The papers of Benjamin Lee Smith, North Carolina educator and Duke University alumnus, span the years 1916-1961, and contain correspondence, memoranda, clippings, and other printed material related to public education at both the local and state levels in North Carolina. There are also several dozen photographs of N.C. school buildings and personnel, circa 1930s-1950s. Papers are arranged in the following series: Correspondence, Subject Files (the largest series in the collection), Clippings, Printed Material, and Speeches. Other topics include prohibition and the elections of 1928, and religion and politics in North Carolina. A small but significant amount of material concerns school integration in Greensboro and associated civil rights issues in North Carolina (located within boxes 10, 11, 14-16, 21, 24, 26 and 31). Collection also includes material on charitable organizations in which Smith was active, especially the Methodist Church, North Carolina Education Association (NCEA), Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts, and the Horace Mann League.

Author (fiction and non-fiction) and gender equity consultant from Durham, N.C. Collection includes materials from Smith's literary career as an author of mystery novels, files from her work as a gender equity consultant, her newspaper columns on gender in the workplace, and materials from her work with youth at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Durham. Also includes a small amount of correspondence from Smith's college years and family photographs from the early 20th century. The files relating to her fiction writing also include a set of audiocassettes related to one of her books. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Alva Carmichael Smith, businessman, managed the Southern Coal Company at Columbus, Georgia, from about 1911 until the early 1930s. He was active in politics in Columbus, where, in 1941, he had been a member of the local executive committee of the Democratic Party for 22 years.The bulk of the collection includes correspondence (1913-1933), relating to Smith's position as manager of the Southern Coal Company, dealing with miners and shippers in Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and customers in Alabama and Georgia. Includes material on his membership in the local Kiwanis and Masonic organizations.

Agnes Smedley was a journalist, writer, and left-wing activist remembered for her activity on behalf of the Communist cause in China during the 1930s. It is believed that she engaged in extensive espionage activities while she lived in Shanghai from 1929-1941. The Agnes Smedley letters consist of three letters by Smedley, the first of which was written while she lived in Shanghai, and the second two while she lived at the Yaddo artists' colony during the 1940s. The first letter is a request for a social engagement, and the second two letters discuss the particulars of her political observations and writings while she lived and worked in China.

Lawyer and U.S. Representative from North Carolina. Correspondence, legal documents, and other papers (chiefly 1850-1870 and 1912-1937) of John Humphrey Small; of his father-in-law, Col. Rufus W. Wharton, lawyer and planter; and of Col. David M. Carter, lawyer, planter, businessman, and court official, of Fairfield, N.C. Small's papers form the bulk of the collection and concern his North Carolina agricultural interests, his legal practice, his activities in Congress, river and harbor improvements, the Intracoastal Waterway, patronage, Southern financial conditions, U.S. and North Carolina politics, World War I labor problems, and the 1929 Depression. The papers before 1850 are mainly deeds, family papers, and legal documents. Wharton's and Carter's papers relate largely to the legal profession and to their agricultural interests.

Edward Featherston Small was a photographer and salesperson for the W. Duke, Sons & Co. tobacco company in Durham, North Carolina. His papers include correspondence regarding W. Duke, Sons & Co. sales tactics during the 1880s as well as typescript drafts by Small, including some undated autobiographical essays and a 1907 history of his work for W. Duke, Sons and Co.

Clarissa Sligh is an artist and author of works such as Wrongly Bodied, Reading Dick and Jane with Me, What's Happening With Momma? Jake in Transition, and It Wasn't Little Rock. Collection includes materials relating to Sligh's career as an artist, with particular focus on her various projects and exhibitions in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Projects represented include Jake In Transition/Wrongly Bodied, Witness to Dissent/It Wasn't Little Rock, Coast to Coast, Sandy Ground, Malcolm X: Man, Ideal, Icon, What's Happening With Momma? and an NC Reunion/Slavery project, along with several others. Sligh's files frequently include correspondence, research materials, drafts of essays and exhibition plans, clippings and other source materials, contact sheets and slides, and occasionally exhibit pieces and texts from the actual installation. Other items included in the collection are exhibition binders and scrapbooks kept by Sligh to document her career; correspondence and communication between Sligh and other artists, galleries, or publishers; catalogs and publicity materials from Sligh's many exhibitions, shows, and publications, artists' books, materials documenting Sligh's art and process, large framed photographic prints; and other materials. Miriam Slifkin was a feminist leader in Chapel Hill who was active from the 1960's-2000's. Miriam Slifkin founded the Chapel Hill chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the Orange County Rape Crisis Center. This collection contains NOW operational files including correspondence, newsletters, chapter organization records, speeches, fund raising, budget files, files on related organizations, and files related to sexual discrimination and sexual discrimination lawsuits. Other materials document the founding and early history of the Orange County Rape Crisis Center and her work on the Board of the Orange County Human Relations Commission. Slifkin's work to make the Morehead Scholarships at the University of North Carolina coeducational are also documented. Also included are materials for courses on Women's Studies and other educational materials, handbooks, personal files, issues of SPOKESWOMAN, NCC-LAW newsletters, and two audiocassettes of an interview of Slifkin, 1994. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Alonzo William Slayback (1879-1969), of St. Louis, Missouri, was the youngest of six children and the only son of Col. Alonzo W. Slayback (1838-1882) and Alice A. Waddell (1839-). The collection includes two diaries kept by Alonzo William Slayback from 1898 to 1901. The first diary consists of 17 double-sided pages of remarks fastened with a metal brad to several small slips of paper that serve as an index. The 43 numbered remarks, which range in date from October 20, 1898, to August 19, 1899, and undated, describe Slayback's conversations, encounters, and dates with several different women. The second diary, a small account book from the Merchant's National Bank of St. Louis, contains 42 pages of letters addressed to V, Veda, or Olga; the woman Slayback loved whose fickleness elicited passionate and conflicted feelings in him. Eighteen letters are dated from December 4, 1899, to November 16, 1901. Together, the diaries provide insight into dating and courtship in St. Louis, Mo., at the end of the 19th century.

Frank Slaughter was a white surgeon and author who published 65 novels mostly focused on medicine, historical fiction and biblical history. The collection includes personal and professional correspondence and writings, primarily manuscript drafts and some published works of Frank Slaughter as well as some manuscript drafts of Jane Slaughter, Frank Slaughter's wife and a children's book author. Also included are research and publicity materials. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collection.
