The Harry A. Siitonen papers document Siitonen's work with the Socialist movement on the national and local scale in the 1950s through the 1970s. Siitonen, an alum of Michigan State University and son of Finnish immigrants, was heavily involved in the Socialist Party USA through the mid 1970s. He was chair of the Los Angeles and San Francisco Locals of the Socialist Party-USA during the 1950s-1970s, and active in the national Social Party-USA committee after its reconstitution in the 1970s. The papers are arranged into the following series: Correspondence, Subject Files, Party Conventions, Regional and National Organizations, Socialist Party Action Committee, California Socialist Parties, and Printed Materials. The papers include incoming and outgoing correspondence, internal memos, meeting minutes, resolutions, position papers, constitutions, and other records of party activities at local, state, and national levels.

Collection comprises a handwritten letter Lydia Howard Sigourney drafted as Secretary for the Hartford Ladies' Association for supplicating justice and mercy towards [sic?] the Indians, to request assistance with the circulation of a petition among the women of Hartford. The letter also discusses the political process behind the petition and its circulation. Includes a faint handwritten addendum, written in another person's hand, noting a decision not to send the letter. The item is undated, but possibly dates to the 1830s.

Resident of Mount Jackson, Va. Collection contains personal correspondence, business papers, and receipts relating to William Sigler. Some correspondence concerns local politics and economic conditions. Sigler sometimes corresponded with prominent merchants in Baltimore, Md.

Prominent feminist, author, and political activist in the 1960s and 70s. Author of MEMOIRS OF AN EX-PROM QUEEN (1972), ON THE STROLL (1980), and DRINKING THE RAIN (1995). The materials in the Alix Kates Shulman Papers span the dates 1892 to 2000, with the bulk of materials dating from 1968 to 2000. These materials include: manuscripts, notes, clippings, published books, correspondence, photographs, audio and videotapes, microfilm, address and date books, family and business records. The primary focus of the collection is Shulman's writing and literary career. The secondary focus is the women's liberation and feminist movements, in which Shulman was and continues to be very active (from 1968 to 2000). However, feminism and feminist activism are inextricably intertwined with Shulman's writing career, and her 1972 novel MEMOIRS OF AN EX-PROM QUEEN is regarded by many as the first novel to "come out of" the women's liberation movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Mel Shimm was a professor of law and Associate Dean at the Duke Law School. The Mel Shimm papers include materials from Mel Shimm's time as a faculty member at Duke Law School. Included are class materials such as exams and readings, correspondence, committee materials, and other materials.

Jerome Shestack was a Philadelphia lawyer and human rights advocate. His papers chiefly document the leadership roles he undertook for legal and social justice organizations such as the American Bar Association, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the International League for Human Rights, the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, and many others, and the histories of those entities. Series include extensive correspondence and subject files, organization files, writings and speeches, publications and clippings, as well as a small collection of personal files, photographs, and Shestack's World War II diary. Topics covered in the collection include but are not limited to: the history of the American Bar Association, law and legislation related to international and domestic human and civil rights, American government policies on human rights, Jewish human rights issues, the defense of political dissidents such as Andrei Sakharov, disappeared persons in Argentina, the rights of the mentally disabled, and Shestack's role in standing against the Supreme Court nomination of Robert Bork. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

Anne Sherman graduated from Duke University in 1994 and the University of Chicago Law School in 1999. As an undergraduate, she majored in Public Policy Studies and was a varsity cheerleader. She held administrative roles at Duke University including Dean for Academic Advising and Student Affairs for the Law School. This collection consists of materials from Anne Sherman's time as a student at Duke largely related to cheerleading including photographs, a Coca-Cola Bowl banner, itineraries, directory, chants, a Chronicle article written by Sherman, and a letter from Duke alum, Ted Holmes.

Collection contains two letters written on one sheet of paper. Sheldon wrote (1883 October 3) to a "Miss Powell" regarding her travel plans. The letter was perhaps accompanied by the clipping regarding her activities and photograph reproduction of her that are also present in the collection. Another writer, "Minnie," forwarded Sheldon's letter to her parents by writing her own letter on the back. She mentioned that she visited Charles Dickens' daughter-in-law, and that she was on tour with "Maud," who may have been American actress Maude Adams. She added that "Miss [Susan B.?] Anthony is still here, but will leave for America soon. She is very proud of Maud as a representative American girl."

Political activist; nurse; owner of Internationalist Book Store in Chapel Hill, N.C. Sheldon was murdered in the store on February 21, 1991. Drafts of Sheldon's speeches, articles, diary and notes; news clippings; printed materials; and transcripts of trials and FBI files. Materials relate chiefly to his political activism as a draft resister in 1968; a visit to China in the 1970s, including slides; work with the Communist Workers Party in the 1970s and the Green Party in the 1980s; union organizing at Cone Mills Textile plant in the 1970s; and various Palestine issues in the 1980s.

Collection contains mainly letters (mostly between 1850-1869) to members of the Sheek family of North Carolina, from relatives who had migrated to Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Texas. The letters concern religion in the West, economic conditions, farming on the frontier, Texas during the 1840s-1860s, sectional strife, Civil War experiences, and conditions in the Confederacy and after the war.

Lambert Shears was a professor in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literature at Duke University from 1927-1959. The collection includes syllabi, exams, lecture notes, as well as Shears' graduate student papers from Columbia University and ranges in date from 1912-1959.

John D. Shaw was a 1932 graduate of Duke University where he played three seasons of varsity basketball. Scrapbook contains clipping and other assorted memorabilia documenting Duke basketball with the inclusive dates 1930-1932.

H. J. M. Shaw (b. 1876) was an English mining engineer and businessman who spent much of his time in China between 1902 and 1909. This collection consists of the diary of H. J. M. Shaw (b. 1876), an English mining engineer and businessman. The diary covers the period 1902-1909. The diary entries are in two distinct parts: June through August, 1902 during the start of a trip to China and April 1908 to March 1909 starting with Shaw travelling back to England with stops in Japan and Canada. Subsequent entries describe his vacation trips while back home including time spent in Ireland. The final entries describe his trip back to China and his daily activities once in Weihan, China.

David B. Shatzer was a salesman in Franklin Co, Penna. Census records indicate that Shatzer may have also been a shoemaker at this time. Possibly b. 1841 in St. Thomas (Franklin Co.), Penna. Collection comprises a copy (48 pgs.) of "Pierce's Memorandum and Account Book designed for Farmers, Mechanics and all people" distributed by the World's Dispensary Medical Association. Half of the pages were printed with advertisements and testimonials for Pierce's pharmaceutical products, along with his articles on the diseases of women, men, liver, blood, and lungs. It also includes an advertisements for the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. The rest of the pages contain handwritten notes made by Shatzer regarding his sales of Downing's galvanic battery, which was likely an electronic device used to treat various ailments, including headaches, rheumatism, neuralgia, and joint pain. Shatzer primarily recorded testimonies about the effectiveness of the device, but a few notes provide his sales figures. In addition, some notes suggest that Shatzer also sold pictures, copies of the Lord's Prayer and other prayers, and a product in bottles. It is clear that all of his sales were in Franklin County.

Notable correspondents include Frank Billings, Henry Ashbury Christian, John Miller Turpin Finney, Joel Ernest Goldthwait, Elliott Proctor Joslin, Richard Pearson Strong, Edward Wyllys Taylor, John Collins Warren (1866-1932), and Aldred Scott Warthin. Papers also include letters to the Arnold family of Paris from Shattuck's father, George Cheyne Shattuck, Jr. (1813-1893), and his grandfather, George Cheyne Shattuck (1783-1854). There is also a newspaper clipping of an obituary for G.C. Shattuck, Jr.

John Allen Sharpe, Jr. was a Duke alumnus who served as editor of the ROBESONIAN newspaper from 1947-1982. Collection includes correspondence, clippings, and photographs, along with business records for S. A. Edmund & Co.

The Duke Vigil was a peaceful demonstration, sparked by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that occurred at Duke University in April 1968. The Vigil involved students, faculty, and non-academic employees of the university and called for racial equality and improved wages for hourly workers. Barry Sharoff organized publicity for the Duke Vigil Strategy Committee. The collection includes fliers, newspapers, press releases, statements, notes, correspondence, and publicly distributed materials regarding the Duke Vigil gathered by Barry Sharoff in his role in charge of publicity for the Vigil, as well as materials related to the 20th anniversary of the Vigil in 1988.

ALS. Sewell writes to Rev. David Benedict, on fundraising efforts for the College, and to Tristam Burges, regarding the health of Burges' daughter and referring to various medical publications.

Samuel Sewall was a judge, businessman, and printer in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Collection comprises an affidavit sworn by Susanna Ramer before Samuel Sewall, testifying "that going up into her Garret this Monday Morning to call her Negro Alexander, she found Anne Staples Servant Maid of Samuel Eaton, in Bed with the said Alexander, which was a great surprise to her, not knowing that such an one was at all in the house. Sworn March, 16 1713 in presence of Anne Staples...." With attestation in a different hand, reading "April 10 1713 Sworn in Court at Boston Att. Davenport."

Physician and Confederate surgeon, of Paris (Fauquier Co.), Va. Alleged to have pronounced the death of abolitionist John Brown. Correspondence, travel journal, bills, presecriptions, deeds, receipts, records of land sales, and other papers (chiefly 1820-1900), concerning Settle's medical career, his interests in stock raising and farming, Civil War, events in Virginia (1861-1862), the Confederate medical service, activities of military units, and other matters. Includes letters from Robert H. Simpson, an offcer of the 17th Virginia Infantry.

ALS. Semelaigne and Henri Colin write about plans for the celebration of the centennial of the death of Philippe Pinel. Semelaigne was Pinel's grandnephew and head of the centennary committee.

Josiah and Mary Duke Biddle Trent collected and donated the Trent Collection, including these materials on U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Assorted printed materials about FDR, including his stamp collecting and obituary material; autographed portraits; and 2 signed letters from FDR dating from 1932 and 1933.

Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans (1920-2012) was the only daughter of Mary Duke and Anthony J. Drexel Biddle Jr. This collection documents her childhood in New York, enrollment at Duke University, and marriages to Josiah C. Trent and James H. Semans. She continued her family's legacy of philanthropy, with a focus on the arts, education, and medicine, and became civically active beginning in the 1950s, espeically in Durham and North Carolina.

James Hustead Semans (1910-2005) was an American urologist and the second husband of Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans. This collection documents the history of the Semans family of Uniontown, PA and his medical training and career, which involved stateside military service during World War II, private practice in Atlanta, GA, and teaching at Duke University. His clinical interests included medical rehabilitation and marriage counseling, and he was the creator of polylingual lecturing.

Collection consists of 898 nitrate negatives and two prints, all taken by amateur photographer Reginald Sellman from 1911 to 1935, chiefly in Baltimore, Maryland and environs. There is also a detailed handwritten index to over 100 images. Subjects include Susie Ford, possibly Sellman's fiancée; his wife Obedience (Bedie) Darden Sellman, and their son Bruce Darden Sellman. Places featured include Baltimore residences, streets, bridges, railway stations, monuments, parks, and hospitals and medical institutions such as Johns Hopkins Medical School and the Biedler and Sellman Sanatorium, founded by Reginald Sellman's father, William A. B. Sellman. There are many snapshots of family members, and photos taken during hikes, camping trips, and visits to parks. Maryland locations include Baltimore County historic sites and parks: the Owing's Mills area, Gwynn's Falls, Chatalonee, Loch Raven, Druid Lake, the Chesapeake's Eastern Shore, Elk River, and the Patapsco River. The Sellmans often visited relatives in North Carolina; thus, there are also many images taken in early 20th century Beaufort, Goldsboro, La Grange, Kinston, and Raleigh, including the Raleigh Methodist Orphanage. Some photographs feature commercial fishing scenes and cotton transport.

Cleveland Sellers is a veteran civil rights activist who helped lead the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. The Cleveland Sellers Papers consist of SNCC and other Civil Rights-era publications and correspondence, including items from the Holly Springs COFO office and the Virginia Students' Civil Rights Committee.

Peter Sekaer (1901-1950) was a Danish-born American photographer. Collection consists of fifteen black-and-white photographs taken by Sekaer from about 1937-1940, while working for the U.S. National Housing Authority to document living conditions and public housing projects in various places in the U.S. Known locations include Louisville, Kentucky; New Orleans, Louisiana; Williamsburg, N.Y.; Nashville, Tennessee; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Austin, Texas. Individuals in the photographs include African Americans and other people of color, and White Americans; there are quite a few photographs of children playing. The focus is typically on urban and rural dwellings and yards in areas of poverty; there are also a few images of public housing projects, small businesses, and warehouses. The gelatin silver print sizes range from 4 1/2 x 4 5/8 to 10 1/4 x 13 1/8 inches. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Lawyer, election clerk, and Virginia legislator, of Martinsburg and Hedgesville, Virginia (now West Virginia). Correspondence, account books, ledgers, and other professional, business, and family correspondence (chiefly 1820-1885), of Seibert and of his family. The collection relates to family matters, Virginia and national politics before the Civil War, migration into the Old Northwest, social life and customs, and slavery in Virginia.

Dr. Mab Segrest is a feminist writer, scholar, and activist who received her PhD from Duke University in 1979. She was born in 1949 in Tuskegee, Alabama and attended Huntingdon College from 1967 to 1971. Segrest is recognized for speaking and writing about sexism, racism, homophobia, classism, and other forms of oppression. Collection contains correspondence, activism, teaching, and writing files, as well as photographic and audiovisual materials that document Segrest's personal life, education, and professional life. There are significant materials relating to Segrest's work with the following organizations: The NC Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality, North Carolinians Against Racist and Religious Violence (NCARRV), The Center for Democratic Renewal (CDR), The North Carolina Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality (NCCGLE), National Women's Studies Association (NWSA), The World Council of Churches/Urban Rural Mission (WCC/URM), and The National Women's Studies Association/Southern Women's Studies Association (NWSA/SWSA). Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture and the History of Medicine Collection.

Theodore D. Segal received his undergraduate degree from Duke in 1977. As a student, Segal began studying Black and white student activism of the 1960s and continued after he retired from practicing law. This research resulted in his book, Point of Reckoning: The Fight for Racial Justice at Duke University, published in 2021. This collection contains papers and audio recordings related to Segal's research related to student activism and his book. Materials in the collection include oral history interview transcripts and recordings, surveys, notes, and articles.

John Seelye was a professor of English and American Literature at the University of California at Berkeley, University of Connecticut, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dartmouth College, and the University of Florida. The papers of John Seelye span the years 1862-2015, with the bulk of the papers dated between 1955 and 2007, covering Seelye's professional career as both an scholar and as an editor of the Penguin Classics series for literature. Although there are files related to his teaching and career as an academic, the emphasis of the collection is on Seelye's work as author and editor. The collection consists of correspondence (sent and received) and contracts; subject files Seelye maintained at each of his institutions and for his research; writings by Seelye, including book reviews, poetry, articles and prose, as well as books, including a copy of the Life of Asa G. Sheldon: Wilmington Farmer (1862); and personal items, which include incoming correspondence intended for Suzanne Everett Throop, who received a large number of love letters from "Marguerite" between 1897 and 1898 and some additional letters from "Harriet" and "Chandler" in the 1920s. Subjects in the papers include Mark Twain, the literary criticism and interpretation of Herman Melville's works and American literature generally, the West in fiction, rivers in the United States, cowboys in popular culture, the history of Plymouth Rock, and the publishing of poetry in the United States.

Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick (1950-2009) was a literary critic, teacher, artist, and poet. She is best remembered as one of the founders of the field of queer theory. Her work on sexuality influences our continuted understanding of contemporary culture. This collection contains materials that document her scholarly career, her visual art, and her personal life. It includes drafts and copies of her published and unpublished works, her correspondence, research files, and teaching materials, as well as her visual artwork, and some documentation of her personal life, particularly her experience living with breast cancer. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Seashore Summer School, Inc. was a school for teachers affiliated with Trinity College and Duke University and located at Oriental, North Carolina. The records contain files of correspondence, financial records, reports, and printed materials documenting the school's operations.

American retailer founded 1886 in Chicago, Ill. Consumer Information Services produced a series of instructional filmstrips and booklets on a range of home improvement projects. Consists of two boxed filmstrip series: Let's Decorate the Bathroom; and Your Space Age Kitchen. 35mm filmstrips are accompanied by reading scripts and handout booklets intended to instruct homeowners on tips and techniques for designing, planning, repairing and remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, with suggestions for electrical appliances and furnishings. Series was produced by the Sears Consumer Information Services Division. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Raleigh Sears was a member of the American Expeditionary Force, stationed in Siberia during World War I. Collection includes photographs and postcards from Sears' travels during his military service. Some of these are labeled as being from Vladivostok, Russia; others are of an unidentified Asian country, and still others are of Honolulu and miscellaneous naval vessels. The majority of the photographs are black and white prints or images sized 3.5x5.5 inches; most do not have labels or descriptions. There are also 4 panoramas that will require additional conservation work. In addition, there are some miscellaneous papers from Sears' post-war work on railroads, as well as research and photocopies about his military service.

Educator, gay rights activist, and author of many works on sexuality, identity, and sex education, and the history of homosexuality and the gay rights movement in the United States. The James T. Sears Papers span the dates 1918-2011, with the bulk of the material covering the period between 1950 and 2004. The papers are arranged into the following series: Audiovisual Material; Other Activities; Personal Papers; Photographic Material; Professional Papers; the largest series, Research and Writings; Jack Nichols Papers; and Oversize Material. The Research and Writings series is divided into subseries for major works by Sears, as well as subseries for other writings and editorial work, research files, and a small set of writings by other individuals. Formats include but are not limited to correspondence, research files, writings, interviews, recordings, serials and newspapers, photographs, and diaries. The collection also houses the personal papers of Hal Call (1917-2000) and Jack Nichols (1938-2005), both early activists for gay rights. Taken as a whole, the collection offers a deep and rich source of information on gay, lesbian, and bisexual culture in the United States, especially in the South, and its representation in literature and in the press, both positive and negative; the history of the gay rights movement in the U.S. and abroad, including the evolution of organizations such as the Mattachine Society and related gay movement publications; sexuality studies in the U.S. and teaching sexuality in primary and secondary classrooms; gays in the military; drag queen, lesbian, and bisexual communities; and many other topics relevant to sexual identity in society.
