Collection includes manuscript drafts, printed material, holograph manuscripts and typescripts of Tyler's novels and short stories, including Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant; clippings of articles about Tyler and her writings; serials containing articles by or about Tyler and her work; correspondence between Tyler and her publishers; and materials regarding adaptations of her novels, including the movie The Accidental Tourist. Collection consists primarily of manuscripts and research materials related to Turnipseed's writings (1902-1960s), in particular his multivolume, unpublished autobiography I Tried: An Autobiography of Andrew Spencer Turnipseed. The collection documents Turnipseed's ancestry, early life, and roles as a theologian and activist. Includes many folders of personal and professional correspondence (1929-1980s); lectures and sermons (including 13 audio cassettes); course materials; and travel files. In addition, there are subject files on topics such as Methodism; civil rights; race relations and Southern politics; and public education, including higher education for African-Americans in Alabama. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

William Clair Turner papers, circa 1960s-2013 18.5 Linear Feet

William Clair Turner, Jr. earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Duke University in 1971, his M.Div. from Duke Divinity School in 1974, and his Ph.D. in religion in 1984. He has held several administrative positions at Duke, including Assistant Provost and Dean of Black Affairs and Acting Director of the Afro-American Studies program. In 1982 he became a full-time faculty member in the Divinity School, directing the Office of Black Church Affairs before being appointed Professor of the Practice of Homiletics. He has pastored several churches, including his current position at Mt. Level Baptist Church and was previously ordained in the United Holy Church of America, Inc. denomination. The collection documents Turner's academic and personal activities. Materials include personal and administrative correspondence regarding Turner's roles as pastor and administrator, manuscripts of lectures and sermons, syllabi and notes for courses taught, notes from classes taken while a student, subject files, and records of the United Holy Church of America. The collection also includes VHS, CD, and DVD recordings of some of his sermons.

Philip Turner papers, 1751-1858, 1881 and undated 6 Linear Feet (9 boxes)

Philip Turner (1740-1815) was a noted surgeon from Norwich, Connecticut and New York, New York. His papers date from 1751 to 1858 and contain correspondence, military hospital returns (1777-1780) describing the Army's sick and wounded, printed material, a prescription and logbook, and ledgers; these materials document Philip Turner's career as a surgeon in private practice in Norwich, Connecticut and New York, New York, in the Continental Army, and in the United States Army up to the War of 1812, during which he was stationed at Fort Columbus, NY. There is correspondence with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, William Eustis, Henry Dearborn, John Morgan, William Shippen, and other prominent Americans. Also includes materials on Turner's family. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Turner family papers, 1778-1929 and undated 3.5 Linear Feet Approx. 1316 Items

The Turner family was based in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas. Correspondence, papers, diaries, and scrapbooks of Jesse Turner, Sr. (1805-1894), lawyer, jurist, and Whig politician of Van Buren, Ark.; his wife, Rebecca (Allen) Turner (1823-1917); their son, Jesse Turner, Jr. (1856-1919); and other members of the Turner and Allen families, relating to law practice, family history and personal matters, political activities in Arkansas and the U.S. (1840-1900), secession in Arkansas, the Arkansas Constitution of 1836, social life and customs in Arkansas, life during Reconstruction, and U.S. presidential elections of 1848 and 1860. Correspondents include prominent Arkansas attorneys Albert Pike and Absalom Fowler. There are also a number of letters between Rebecca Allen and Jesse Turner before their marriage, and letters from Rebecca to her son Jesse Jr., as well as diaries written by his mother (1857-1859) chronicling his early childhood.

Turner Family Letters, 1943-1945 and undated 0.2 Linear Feet 40 Items

Letters from three Turner relatives or friends in the U.S. Army during World War II: Johnnie Rice, Arthur Johnson, and Edward G. Walker ["Garl"?]. The letters were addressed primarily to Mrs. "Mom" Turner, and were sent from Fort Bragg, N.C.; England; and France. There are also a few other letters from relatives and friends, a sympathy card on a family death, and one undated letter from a woman to "Nellie" (probably a letter from Mrs. Turner to her sister). It is not clear if the "sons" are Mrs. Turner's sons-in-law or her close friends. The letter writers request news from home, describe life in camp and on the battlefield, and occasionally refer to conditions in French towns and rural areas.

Arlin Turner was a professor in Duke's English Department from 1953 to 1978 and served as department chair during 1958-1964. The collection includes department memoranda, correspondence, minutes and documentation relating to English Department policies. Also included are minutes, memoranda and correspondence related to various committees Turner served on. The collection ranges in date from 1953-1979.

Arlin Turner papers, 1927-1980 15.6 Linear Feet circa 9750 Items

The papers span Turner's career as a scholar of American literature, from his undergraduate education at West Texas State University in 1927 to his death in 1980, when he was an instructor at Southwest Texas State University. Comprised primarily of personal and professional correspondence with scholars and publishers of American literature, including Gay Wilson Allen, John Q. Anderson, Louis Budd, Robert Cantwell, James B. Colvert, Eddie Gay Cone, Benjamin Franklin Fisher, Albert Mordell, Norman Holmes Pearson, William Stafford, and Edmund Wilson. There are also letters, printed matter, reports, and minutes that Turner collected as a member or officer of organizations, including the American Literature Section of the Modern Language Association, Committee for American Studies, and the Associated Research Council. The Turner Papers also document the development of high school, collegiate, and graduate level instruction in American literature through the organizational records and course materials, the latter of which include Turner's personal writings and research notes, subject files, clippings, lecture notes, and other printed materials on various authors or genres of American literature, including Southern literature, American humor, Nathaniel Hawthorne and George Washington Cable.

William S. Turman Jr. papers, 1930-1942 0.2 Linear Feet (One half document box.)

William S. Turman Jr. (1911-1983) was a friend of the Josiah C. and Mary Duke Biddle Trent family and a resident of Durham, North Carolina from approximately 1937-1942. An Okmulgee, Oklahoma, native, he served in the Civilan Conservation Corps (1933) and the United States military (1941-1946, 1949-1967). This collection includes a scrapbook assembled by Turman documenting his Civilian Conservation Corps service and a photo album that, in part, shows his friendship with the Trent family and life in Durham. The collection also includes Turman's high school diploma, a class photo, and three handwritten pages of English-to-German translations.

Liberia to America poem, 1849 0.1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Martin Farquhar Tupper was an English writer and poet. Collection comprises Martin Farquhar Tupper's manuscript poem in four verses, "Liberia to America." Signed, with location Albury, England [crossed out], Surrey. Tupper was among the first to support the new country; he exhorts Americans to support their "sable" brothers and to recognize the state officially, "with gracious glance befriend Thine own sons, no longer slaves!" The poem is undated, but probably dates around 1849, with the United States' formal recognition of Liberia.
