Jim Hall (b 1930) was born in Buffalo, NY. He studied with Hall Overton and participated in many Jazz Loft jam sessions. He is a guitarist and composer/arranger. Jane Hall, wife of guitarist Jim Hall, is a psychoanalyst. She studied composition with Hall Overton during the loft years.

Lin Halliday (1936-2000) was born in DeQueene, AR. He moved to Los Angeles in his teens to begin playing the tenor saxophone professionally. Halliday participated in many loft jam sessions. Throughout the summer of 1961, Halliday and his girlfriend Virginia McEwan (now Wald) spent time in the loft with pianist Sonny Clark.

Irene Halsman is the daughter of Yvonne and Philippe Halsman, a photographer for Life Magazine with and friend of Eugene Smith. Yvonne Halsman was the wife of Philippe Halsman. She occasionally helped Eugene Smith make prints.

Gladys Clark Harris is a family member of jazz pianist Sonny Clark (1931-1963).

Dave Heath (b 1931) was born in Philadelphia. He began taking pictures in the late 1940s, and by 1959 he was studying photography under W. Eugene Smith in New York.

Margaret Hennessey contributed to the Jazz Loft Project.

Peter Ingram is a scientist from England, recruited to work in the Research Triangle Park in the 1960s. In 1968, Ingram, also a drummer, opened the Frog and Nightgown, a jazz club in Raleigh. In 1970, Thelonious Monk, a North Carolina native, played at the club.

Chuck Israels (b. 1936) was born in New York City. As a bassist, he is best known for his time with the Bill Evans Trio from 1961-1966. In 1966, he left the trio to study composing and arranging with Hall Overton.

Ira Jackson was born in Detroit, MI. A saxophonist, he participated in many loft jam sessions in the early 1960s. Jackson knew loft resident and bassist Jimmy Stevenson and other young Detroit musicians from their youth.

In this oral history, Tomas Janda focuses on his relationship with W. Eugene Smith, whom he met in 1958. Janda talks about helping move Smith's materials into his space at the Jazz Loft building and visitors to Smith's space including Salvador Dali, Zoot Sims, and Nechama Hendel. Also of note is Janda's discussion of his own interest in photography, his work in construction, and his memories of Hall Overton.

Paul Jeffrey (b 1933) was born in New York City. A tenor saxophonist, bandleader, and composer, Jeffrey participated in sessions with Hall Overton.
