Theodore W. "Ted" Minah records and papers, 1941-1975 and undated 41.4 Linear Feet

Theodore W. "Ted" Minah, was the Director of Duke University Dining Halls from 1946-1974. Over his 28 years at Duke, Minah worked hard to serve the best quality food at as low a price as possible without incurring deficit to the University. By his retirement in 1974, Minah had transformed the dining halls at Duke University from a small operation to an operation of 12 dining halls serving approximately 15,000 meals per day. Materials in the collection include administrative records, work and purchase orders, food pricing, menus, financial and statistical reports, job descriptions, survey results, banquet logs, blueprints, union handbooks, black and white and color photographs, and other materials documenting the activities of the Duke University Dining Halls and the Director of Dining Halls.

Anna Mitchell letter regarding the illness and death of her son, Preston, after 1920. 0.1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Anna Mitchell was a resident of Upland, California. Collection comprises a letter (14 pages) written by Anna Mitchell to Sarah, dated September 10, probably written later than 1920. Anna describes the illness and death of her six-year-old son, Preston, giving a day-by-day, sometimes an hour-by-hour, account of his symptoms, as well as treatments and diagnoses by a female doctor, Dr. Gregory. At first the diagnosis is rheumatism, then typhoid, then meningitis. Anna describes his "suffering so with the heat," with "pain down the right side in the region of the liver," "sunken cheeks," and crying with headache, fever, and vomiting. Paralysis comes later. Anna goes on to describe his death, the preparation of his body, the home viewing, and his cremation in Pasadena. She also describes her regrets and her grief; "... whose life was so much dearer to me than my own life, that since he is gone, nothing but darkness & sorrow is left us. Even for those that are left me--I cannot feel that I have courage or strength to make the effort to live."

John Kearsley Mitchell papers, 1827-1849 7 items

Mitchell corresponds with Oliver Wendell Holmes and Jacob Whitman Bailey regarding his book, On the cryptogamous origin of malarious and epidemic fevers. Papers also include a line drawing, removed from Mitchell's son's copy of Gower's lectures on the diagnosis of diseases of the brain, pub. 1885; a letter of recommendation for Andrew Ellicott Kennedy; and printed sheet music, Oh! Fly to the prairie, with lyrics by Mitchell.

Joseph Mitchell Papers on Max Wicker, 1932-2006, bulk 1954 1 Linear Feet

Max Wicker was head of Duke University's Baptist Student Union (BSU) in 1953. He was dismissed by the North Carolina Baptists' General Board in 1954, along with state BSU director Jimmy Ray and UNC-Chapel Hill BSU secretary J.C. Herrin, after events surrounding the invitation of a controversial speaker, Christian theologian Nels Ferre, to the 1953 BSU Convention. Their termination followed a six-hour hearing before the Board. The student leaders' dismissal made the pages of the April 12, 1954 TIME magazine. Joseph Mitchell graduated from Duke Divinity School in 1953, where he met Max Wicker. After his retirement, Mitchell began to research and write the account of his friend's dismissal. This collection contains the materials he gathered in the course of his research, including biographical information about individuals involved in the controversy; correspondence related to Wicker's BSU activities, his hearing and termination; Max Wicker's public statement about his beliefs; other documents related to the activities of the BSU at Duke and elsewhere in the state; and news clippings that appeared in regional and national publications. The collection also contains appendices and drafts of Mitchell's account, and his final bound paper, "The 1954 Firing of Max Wicker and Two Other North Carolina Student Directors, Jimmy Ray and J.C. Herrin" (2006).

Nina Cornelia Mitchell papers, 1854-1958 13 Linear Feet

Chiefly family correspondence, including that of Miss Mitchell, of Flushing, N.Y., and Shepherdstown, W. Va., relating to her relief work in Europe during and after World War I. Topics include U. S. Army camps, British Expeditionary Forces hospitals and nurses in France, refugees in Italy, various organizations for wounded soldiers, such as Le Phare de France, and the role women played in relief work. Some letters after World War I relate to continued European relief work and the Food for France Fund. Other correspondence includes that of John Fulton Berrien Mitchell, Sr., an officer in the 2nd New York Volunteer Cavalry, 1862-1864, concerning ordnance and camp and garrison equipage.

U.S. physician, neurologist, and author. Papers date from 1809-1915 and include correspondence and documents sent to Mitchell relating to matters personal and professional. Transcripts are often present. Principal correspondents include his relative Mitchell Henry, his publisher Frank H. Scott, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jeffries Wyman, Charles-Edouard Brown-Séquard, Louis Agassiz, Elizabeth Cabot Cary Agassiz, Anna Eliot Ticknor, Sir W. T. Gairdner, Louis Lee Lawrence, Charles Leonard Moore, Julian Stafford Corbett, Harrison S. Morris, T. Lauder Brunton, Sir William Osler, and Hideyo Noguchi, among others. A complete list of correspondents is available in the collection. Papers are arranged chronologically. The principal language is English, although there are some letters in French and German. Also includes a set of Mitchell's diplomas. The papers form part of the Trent Manuscripts Collection and were acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

ALS. Letters to surgeon Valentine Mott, horticulturalist William Robert Prince, to auditor and naturalist William Lee relate to natural history. Papers also include verses from Le Brun dedicated to Mitchill by Francesca Pascalis and a letter to her from her father Felix Pascalis Ouviere. Mitchill also receives a letter of introduction from Roberts Vaux. In 1928 Mary Mayes writes Dr. Braislin regarding the sale of Mitchill papers in her possession.

W. H. Mixon was a Black man from Alabama who was a reverend in the A.M.E. Church. The W. H. Mixon papers include newsclippings about the A.M.E. Women's Conference called by Mixon in 1895, his diaries for the 1890s-1910s, and a ledger containing reports and records of church activities for the early 1890s.

Mobius Advertising Awards collection, 1970s-2002 and undated, bulk 1984-2002 1328 Linear Feet 19,024 Items

Collection consists primarily of television commercials, although it includes some radio commercials, which were entered for Mobius awards presented in 1971-1999. Most of the collection is divided into two main series, North America and International. Commercials are judged by product type/category as well as budget size. Also included are brochures and press releases which describe the award process ca. 1970s-1990s (98-156 box 68). There are compilation tapes documenting the award-winning entries for 1990-1997 (98-156 box 69). (Accessions 1997-0101: 12,237 items, 850.5 linear feet, dated 1984-1991, undated; 1998-0156: 1500 items, 105 linear feet, dated 1971-1997; 1999-0152: 1200 items, 112.5 linear feet, dated 1997-1998). The Modern Language Association, American Literature Section (ALS) Papers date from 1921 to 1993(bulk 1928-1993).Most of the Section's records consist of correspondence saved by Secretaries or Chairs and mechanically-reproduced reports, minutes, and ballots. These last materials are contained in folders designated "Reports" and dated by year. Additionally, there are folders of material used to compile reports (such as institutional polls and other "raw" information) generated by committees, concerning the American Literature journal and Section organization, and copies of papers to be delivered at Section meetings. The W. Eugene Smith Reference Reference CD Collection includes 5,087 compact discs containing audio originally recorded to quarter-inch open reel tape by photographer W. Eugene Smith. Smith recorded the bulk of the 1,740 reels represented in this collection between 1957 and 1971, while living in the "Jazz Loft" at 821 Sixth Avenue in New York City. The original tapes are housed in the W. Eugene Smith Collection at the University of Arizona's Center for Creative Photography.

Documentary photographer, writer, and lecturer based in Florida. A collection of 100 16x20 black-and-white gelatin silver prints shot by Gary Monroe from 1980 to 1998 in Haiti, in Haitian neighborhoods in Florida, and in Krome Camp, Florida, where Haitian refugees are detained by the U.S. government. Images depict individuals, families, and groups of Haitians and Haitian-Americans in a wide variety of locations, including city streets in Port Au Prince and Miami, rural locales, marketplaces, religious centers, housing interiors, and other locations. Some images of protests and ceremonies are included. Prints are identified by unique number assigned by photographer and arranged by country and then chronologically by number. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts.

"Pee Wee" (Numa Smith) Moore (born Raleigh, N.C., 5 March 1928; died Raleigh, N.C., 13 April 2009) was a professional jazz saxophonist, who performed and recorded with musicians including Louis Jordan, Illinois Jacquet, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, and Mary Lou Williams. The Pee Wee Moore Papers contain materials created and collected by Moore from throughout his career as a jazz saxophonist, including photographs, newspapaer clippings and other paper materials, as well as audio and moving image recordings of concerts, rehearsals, and oral history interviews.

The collection documents the personal, political, and professional aspects of the life of an important feminist writer of the twentieth century. The largest group of materials consists of documentation on all of Morgan's significant written works: DEMON LOVER; DEPTH PERCEPTION; DRY YOUR SMILE; GOING TOO FAR; A HOT JANUARY; LADY OF THE BEASTS; SATURDAY'S CHILD; her well-known feminist anthologies, SISTERHOOD IS POWERFUL, SISTERHOOD IS GLOBAL and SISTERHOOD IS FOREVER; and other materials on her poems, articles, and other writings. In addition, Morgan's papers hold many items of correspondence with a wide range of individuals, including prominent activists and feminists as well as family members and close friends. There is also a significant amount of correspondence and other material that documents Morgan's role as founder of the Sisterhood is Global Institute, and records related to her role as editor and writer for MS. magazine.

May Morris papers, 1909-1931 and undated 0.2 Linear Feet (24 items)

Mary "May" Morris was an English artisan, embroidery designer, jeweller, socialist, and editor. Collection comprises letters, an article, a few photographs, and several drawings. There are 16 letters and notes, dated 1909-1931, addressed to "Ada," who was Ada Culmer, the companion/caregiver for May Morris' sister, Jenny. Fifteen of these items were written by May, with one by Jenny. Subjects range from personal matters to Kelmscott business, including May’s editing of her father’s collected works. Much of the content centers on mutual friends and relatives (with a focus on Jenny's ill health); several letters also mention foreign travel. The article, "Mrs. William Morris," The Athenaeum, 1914 Feb. 7, contains the author's memories of Jane Morris, following her death. There is an albumen photograph (4.25 x 5.75-inches) by Ernest Hall of Oxford, showing May Morris at work on one of her tapestries at Kelmscott, as well as a developing out paper copy by Haines of London of a 1905 Carter and Co. photograph (6 x 4.25-inches) of Jane, May, and Jenny Morris, with Ada Culmer. In addition, there is a reproduction of a photograph of Kelmscott manor. Includes three undated reproductions of portraits of female figures.

Moses family papers, 1859-1951 14 Linear Feet (10 boxes)

Papers relate to a Jewish family originally from South Carolina and Georgia, and residents of New York City, whose members included drama critic and journalist Montrose Jonas Moses, his wife Dorothy Herne and other Herne sisters, and his sister, author Belle Moses. The collection primarily consists of manuscripts written by Belle Moses, as well as her research notes and letters. Notes, clippings, diaries, letters, and other papers of Montrose J. Moses and Dorothy Herne also represent a substantial portion. There are also five scrapbooks assembled by the Herne sisters. Also included are family and travel photographs, nitrate negatives, physician Montefiore Moses' visiting books, and memorabilia such as pins, calling cards, programs, and other keepsakes. Print materials include literature, poetry, and textbooks published around the turn of the century.

John Moses photographs, 1974-1993 1.0 Linear Feet (2 boxes) 31 prints and 2 typed manuscripts

Collection of 23 photographs taken by John Moses, pediatrician and photographer, of teenaged parents and their children, chiefly in Durham, North Carolina and surrounding communities, and eight photographs of farmworkers taken in the South. Seeking to find the "human stories behind the statistics," he photographed the adolescent parents - almost all young women - in their homes and urban surroundings. A few images include grandparents. The photographs of farm laborers were taken in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida from 1974-1979, and include portraits of children, adults, and older people of all races at work and at home; also includes one of farmworkers protesting on a road as a bus with a Minute Maid sign rolls by. The gelatin silver prints all measure 11x14 inches. Includes an index of image titles and a three-page statement by Moses about his photography and its relevance to his medical work. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.
