Robert Melton (b. 1951) is a gay man and a retired curator and librarian with multiple subject specialties in the humanities. Melton compiled this collection over decades, which focuses on literary works and theatrical representations created by, for, and about gay men or homoerotic desire. The archival collection includes select periodicals and book dealers' catalogs, issues of The New Yorker with writings by David Sedaris and other authors, and materials from Diversionary Theatre such as playbills, programs, and mailers. Also included in the collection are similar materials from other theaters, as well as literature reviews and ephemera.

Correspondence and clippings cover every facet of his career: teacher and superintendent of schools in Mayfield, Ky.; service in the Army in World War I, library, teaching, and administrative positions at Columbia University; his involvement with Duke University and with major fundraising organizations such as the Carnegie Corporation, and the Council of Southern Universities, where he was director of the Southern Fellowship Fund. One volume of memoranda from the Southern Fellowship Fund includes a 1966 proposal for faculty development among predominantly Afro-american colleges and universities. Lester's addresses and speeches chiefly concern education, philanthropy, and library issues. Collection also includes papers relating to other Lester family members, and to Lester's Chapel in Shelby County, Alabama.

Robert Solow (1924-2023) was a Nobel Prize winner and Emeritus Institute Professor (of economics) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This collection documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, teaching, and professional activities. It forms parts of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Robert Preston Harriss was a white journalist, arts critic, and author based in Baltimore, Maryland. Collection spans the years 1913-1989 and includes correspondence; autobiographical information on Harriss; clippings (including Harriss' writings); printed material (menus, programs, press releases, travel brochures, itineraries, and maps); biographical sketches of associates and artists; photographs and slides; ledgers containing articles and reviews on music, ballet, opera and the stage; tear sheets; and audiovisual material. Individuals sending letters or referred to in the materials include Gerald W. Johnson, Sara Mayfield, Lizette Woods Reese, August Mencken, H. L. Mencken, Robert Minford, Eugene Ormandy, Art Buchwald, and Harriss's sister, Ruth Tyson, among others.

Robert P. Stewart was a lawyer and Duke alumnus who served as a legal aide at the Nuremburg Trials. The Robert P. Stewart Papers consist of 26 letters written by Stewart while serving as a legal aide at the Nuremberg Trials from 1945 September-1946 October. The collection also includes clippings about Stewart's service.

Robert Renbert Wilson served as a professor of political science at Duke University from 1925 to 1975. He also acted as chair of the Dept. of Political Science (1934-1948), Director of Graduate Studies (1937-1947, 1949-1966), lecturer in the Law School (1948-1966), and chair of the Commonwealth Studies Center (1959-1966) at Duke University, and as an adviser on commercial treaties to the U.S. State Department. The Robert R. Wilson Papers primarily consist of correspondence, but the collection also contains writings, teaching materials, subject files, and photographs. Major subjects include American politics and government, treaties, international law, political theory, and the American Journal of International Law. English.

Colonel, 2nd Maryland Eastern Shore Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army. Chiefly Civil War papers belonging to Colonel Robert Rodgers, including military correspondence; telegrams; muster rolls; rosters of officers and staff; lists of deserters, recruits, reenlistments, and voluntary enlistments; reports of sick, wounded, and convalescents; inventories of personal effects of the deceased; hospital and army paroles; morning reports; ordnance returns, invoices, requisitions, issues, and transfers; quartermaster papers; letter book containing routine military correspondence; and general and special orders. After 1863 there are references to African American contrabands. There is also a fragmentary account of the regiment's war experiences concerning the actions in Maryland in 1862 and 1863, including the battle between the U.S.S. Monitor and the C.S.S. Virginia, and in Virginia and West Virginia in 1864. Also included in the collection are papers relating to the Rodgers family of Maryland, including Rodgers's son Robert Slidell Rodgers, practicing law in Missouri following the Civil War.

Natural resources consultant. The Robert Smythe papers comprise correspondence, reports, clippings, and publications chiefly relating to Smythe's work as an officer with the North Carolina Chapter of the Sierra Club. Includes information about environmental issues in North Carolina such as air and water quality, waste management, energy conservation, and land use, as well as the Club's efforts to influence the North Carolina Legislature on environmental matters.

Robert Stanley Rankin (1899-1976) taught political science at Duke beginning in 1927 and was chairman of the political science department from 1949 to 1964. He retired from teaching in 1969. The collection includes departmental records, correspondence, reports, notes, student papers, questionnaires, publications, and other materials of Robert S. Rankin and the Duke University Department of Political Science. English.

Robert S. Rankin was a professor of Political Science at Duke University and member of the United States Commission on Civil Rights. Collection documents Rankin's work on the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, 1960-1973 and consists of agendas and minutes for the monthly meetings of the commission, 1959-1973, and material on special meetings; memoranda, correspondence, statements, and news clippings dealing with the operational aspects of the commission; background studies; transcripts of proceedings; news clippings from fact finding investigations, 1960-1973; statements of commissioners; and transcripts of testimony before congressional committees. Robert Summers (1922-2012) was a professor emeritus of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. This collection consists of selected writings and personal items. It forms parts of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Robert Taylor Cole was a professor in Duke's Political Science department, specializing in comparative politics, Europe and the British Commonwealth and served as Provost to the University from 1960-1969. The collection includes correspondence, student recommendations, and writings. The material ranges in date from 1933-1991.

Robert Osborn was a Professor of Religion at Duke University. His collection includes clippings, correspondence and trial-related documents relating to a civil rights protest in Chapel Hill in January 1964.

Robert Ward was a composer primarily of operas, instrumental works, and symphonic choral works. He won the 1962 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his opera, The Crucible, which remains his best-known work. Ward served as Chancellor of the North Carolina School of the Arts and as a faculty member at Columbia and Duke Universities. His papers span from his time as a student at the Eastman School of Music in the 1930s to his final years composing in 2012. They include scores, music sketches, recordings, libretto drafts, correspondence, scrapbooks, research and information files, writings and speeches by and about Ward, as well as concert programs, newspaper clippings, photographs, awards, and other materials that document his professional life and work as a composer.

Robert Watts "Pete" Hudgens (1896-1973), an investment banker, government official, corporation executive and amateur printer, was born in Laurens County, South Carolina. Personal and professional correspondence, writings, speeches, topical publications and notes, and other papers, relating to rural development programs in the U.S. and other countries, especially Latin America, U.S. Farmers Home Administration, Chapel Hill, N.C., The Citadel, Cosmos Club, Faith at Work, International Development Services, Society for International Development, Southeast Public Health Foundation, National Sharecroppers Fund, National Advisory Committee on Farm Labor, and Latin America.

Robert Clower (1926-2011) was the Hugh C. Lane Professor of Economic Theory, Emeritus at the University of South Carolina. This collection primarily documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, research, teaching, and professional activities. It forms part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Robert White is an Appalachian State University professor who studied and taught in China during the 1980s and 1990s. The collection contains pins, posters, objects, textiles, and printed material, largely produced for a Chinese audience, promoting the ideals and persona of Mao Zedong, the establishment of the People's Republic of China, and the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).

Christ was assistant librarian for Duke University from 1948 until his death in 1951. Primarily materials pertaining Robert Wilson Christ's professional activities with the American Librarian Association. The papers also include a talk given to the North Carolina Negro Library Association. Christ collected the writings of Walter de La Mare and his papers contain seven letters by De la Mare and one by the illustrator W. Graham Robertson.

Robert Wolf was a forester with the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of the Budget, and the Office of Investigations for the Comptroller General. He is credited with drafting the National Forest Management Act of 1976. Collection includes transcripts of over 50 interviews for the Bob Wolf oral history project. Vincenzo Andrei was a professor at the Royal Institute of Music in Florence. Collection comprises a manuscript volume (133 pages) containing Vincenzo Andrei's "Robespierre. Dramma in 5 quadri. Epoca dal 1789 al 1793," handwritten in Italian. The volume is dedicated to (Costantino?) Ressman, an Italian ambassador.

Robin Chandler Lynn Duke held office or was active in a number of organizations including Population Action International, the National Abortion Rights Action League, The Packard Foundation, the Draper World Population Fund, and several major corporations. Married to Ambassador Angier B. Duke. Collection (22100 items, dated 1942-2000) contains items related to Duke's extensive involvement in abortion rights, family planning, and population studies organizations. Series within the collection include correspondence, clippings, writings, publications, miscellaneous, photographs, and subject files. A substantial amount of correspondence from Duke was written to members of the U.S. House and Senate, and was written by Duke in her capacity as National Chair of Population Action International. Books and pamphlets report on population studies, child education, family planning, violence against women, and international education. Organizations represented in the collection include Population Action International, the Draper World Population Fund, Planned Parenthood, NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League), "The Anatomy of Hate" conference, and the National Abortion Federation.

Robin D.S. Higham is an aviation and military historian who is professor emeritus at Kansas State University. Collection consists of scrapbooks and binders of British airplanes and ships (primarily airplanes) as well as news clippings. The scrapbooks are almost exclusively from the World War II period.

Robin Kirk is the Faculty co-chair of the Duke University Human Rights Center at the Franklin Humanities Institute. At the time these files were created, Kirk was serving both as a journalist and a Human Rights Watch researcher. Subject files include notes; research materials; newspaper clippings, magazines; reports, many from human rights organizations; correspondence; copies of governmental documents; notebooks; and other items on human rights, primarily in Peru. There are small amounts of material related to Colombia, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Bolivia. Publications primarily address politics and human rights issues, particularly in Colombia.

The collection documents the personal, political, and professional aspects of the life of an important feminist writer of the twentieth century. The largest group of materials consists of documentation on all of Morgan's significant written works: DEMON LOVER; DEPTH PERCEPTION; DRY YOUR SMILE; GOING TOO FAR; A HOT JANUARY; LADY OF THE BEASTS; SATURDAY'S CHILD; her well-known feminist anthologies, SISTERHOOD IS POWERFUL, SISTERHOOD IS GLOBAL and SISTERHOOD IS FOREVER; and other materials on her poems, articles, and other writings. In addition, Morgan's papers hold many items of correspondence with a wide range of individuals, including prominent activists and feminists as well as family members and close friends. There is also a significant amount of correspondence and other material that documents Morgan's role as founder of the Sisterhood is Global Institute, and records related to her role as editor and writer for MS. magazine.

In a letter to the New York printer and publisher Justus Starr Redfield, Dunglison writes regarding his biography in "Men of the times" and about the use of burnt sponge in the treatment of goitre. He refers to various people and affairs at the Jefferson Medical College. The treatment of goitre is also the subject of his letter to Henry Randall.

Rockett, Burkhead & Winslow (RBW) was a Raleigh-based advertising agency that operated from 1985-2009. Accession (2009-0133) includes CDs, videotapes, DVDs, samples of print advertisements, awards, and USB drives with documents from RBW. Clients include Glaxo, Cort, Dollar Tree, Volvo, and Reed's.

Roderico Yool Díaz is a Kaqchikel Maya photojournalist born in Guatemala and based in North Carolina. The Roderico Yool Díaz papers include photographs and audiovisual materials documenting legal proceedings (2012-2015) against former Guatemalan military dictator Efraín Ríos Montt and his head of military intelligence José Mauricio Rodríguez Sánchez on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity targeting Guatemala's Ixil Maya people, linked to their actions during Ríos Montt's rule from 1982 to 1983. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive and the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Rogers Display Studios was a design and construction firm specializing in product displays and demonstration booths for trade show exhibitors. It was founded by Van Rensselaer Rogers in 1945 in Cleveland and currently operates under the name The Rogers Company. Collection includes black-and-white photographs of exhibit fixtures taken at various trade shows, along with some detail photographs of display elements, props and construction scenes. Clients documented in the collection include Eaton, Reliance Electric, and St. Luke's Hospital. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

The Roland Alston family was an African American family residing in Durham, NC. William Roland Alston Sr., known as "Roland," became the head gardener for Mary Duke Biddle at Pinecrest then Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans at Les Terraces. This collection contains eight oral history interviews with Roland and ten photographs of his family.

American photographer devoted to recording the lives of rural and urban African Americans. Collection consists of Freeman's Portfolio, a 1997 limited edition portfolio of twelve 16x20 gelatin silver prints depicting everyday life in the South, dating 1969-1985. This Portfolio is Number 33 of 45. Prints include Freeman's signature on the bottom right corner. Accompanying pamphlet includes essays about the photographer and a title list for the photographs. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts (Duke University).

Greensboro, North Carolina developer and construction company executive; originator of the concept and name for Research Triangle Park. The Romeo Guest Papers span the dates 1925-1987 with the bulk of the collection dated 1950-1986 and consists of correspondence, business records, clippings and printed material, and plans documenting the development of Research Triangle Park from conceptualization and groundbreaking through periods of growth and success in the 1970s and 1980s. The collection is organized into series for Appointment Books, a Condensed File of key events, Chronological Files, Corporate Files, Manuscript Material, People, Pinelands Company Files, Printed Material, and Audiocassettes. The Appointment Books Series houses Guest's annual schedules for the bulk of his professional life, consisting chiefly of notes on appointments but also containing ideas and thoughts as they occured to him. The Condensed File Series contains files on important events in the development of the "Research Triangle" and individuals instrumental in the bringing that vision to fruition. These people include Guest, business investor Karl Robbins, William Newell, Gordon Gray, and NC governor Luther Hodges. More detailed files on events and people described in the Condensed File can be found in the Chronological Files Series. These document the coordination efforts between the three major research universities in the area, private corporate interests, and the North Carolina state government. The Corporate Files Series contains files related to Guest's construction company, C.M. Guest and Sons, including some files on Research Triangle projects as well as other construction works in North and South Carolina. A series for Manuscript Material houses drafts and notes of Guest's unpublished history of the inception of Research Triangle Park. The People Series houses additional files on people of interest to Guest, including some involved in the success of the Research Triangle as well as research work on Guest and the Research Triangle. The Pinelands Company Files Series contains files documenting the work of the company created to acquire and develop land for Research Triangle Park. A series of additional Printed Material includes newspaper clippings documenting the construction of Research Triangle and the success of companies there as well as publicity for the then-new Research Triangle. The Audiocassettes Series, containing recorded oral histories and interviews with important figures associated with the development of the Research Triangle, completes the collection.

Ronald Anthony Cross was an American science fiction and fantasy author. Collection includes a wide array of Cross' creative work, including short stories and novelettes, poems, essays, song lyrics, novels, and copies of his published work. In addition there is research he conducted for his published books, and often material related to the publishing process, including tracking sheets, correspondence, contracts, reviews, and royalty statements. Material dated past Cross' death has to do with republishing agreements.

The images in this collection were taken by photographer Ron Reis from the 1950s to 1979 and from 2004 to 2014. The earlier body of work (1962-1974) contains 289 black-and-white photographs, accompanied by negatives and contact sheets. The later body of work (2004-2014) contains 3,719 black-and-white and color laser inkjet prints, with a majority of images dated 2012 to 2013. Reis focused his camera on street scenes primarily in New York and New England, but also in Colorado and the midwest, in Europe (Italy, England, Ireland, and Greece), and in the Middle East. His images capture anti-war demonstrations, feminist and gay pride parades, and ethnic festivals, while also documenting the more quotidian life of urban neighborhoods, street markets, and other public spaces such as Speakers' Corner in London's Hyde Park and New York City's Washington Square. The earlier black-and-white gelatin silver prints measure 11x14 inches, while the laser inkjet prints measure 11x17 inches. There are also manuscript and printed materials such as a curriculum vitae, some correspondence, exhibition publicity, articles, and photo essays. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Ron Grunwald was an undergraduate at Duke University during the late 1970s. This collection contains materials reflecting his participation in student activism movements at Duke University and in the community, especially the Duke Southern Africa Coalition and the Radical Academic Union. Types of materials included are: printed matter, posters, newsletters, flyers, clippings, correspondence, memoranda, financial records, and an audiocassette. The bulk of material is from 1977 to 1980. Major subjects included are: student activism at Duke University, Associated Students of Duke University, international politics, human rights, Radical Academic Union, the Ku Klux Klan, Southern Africa Coalition, South Africa, unionization, Terry Sanford, and International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation. Reuben Oscard Everett was an attorney and civic leader in Durham, N.C. The R. O. Everett Papers includes Everett's extensive diaries, 1915-1971, chronicling Everett's professional career, his interests, his family's careers, and social, civic and historical aspects of life in Durham, N.C. The collection also contains a small amount of correspondence, clippings, lecture notes, printed material, pictures, and other papers. In addition, transcripts for all the diaries in the collection have been converted to electronic documents that have been transferred to the Special Collections file server.

Rosa Bonheur was a nineteenth century French painter and sculptor. The collection consists of examples of Bonheur's correspondence, including one letter referencing her painting and her partner, Nathalie. Acquired as part of the Lisa Unger Baskin Collection in the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Roscoe Conkling Simmons was an African American orator, journalist, and community leader who strongly supported the Republican party in the early twentieth century. This collection consists of pamphlets, speeches, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera documenting his public life and service to the Republican party.

Department store in Portland, Ore. Collection consists of three volumes of photographs that depict window and retail sales floor displays, store staff, staff events, and interior and exterior architecture. Displays include ties, hats, shoes, sportswear, golf apparel, outerwear, sleepwear, shirts, sweaters,business attire as well as toiletries and other merchandise. Companies represented include Hart, Schaffner & Marx and Jantzen. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Rosetta Reitz (1924-2008) was a business owner, stock broker, university lecturer, and writer on issues including food, feminism, women's health, and female jazz and blues musicians. She was also the founder and owner of Rosetta Records, a company most prominent in the 1980s that was dedicated to re-releasing historic recordings by female jazz and blues musicians. The Rosetta Reitz Papers address aspects of the entirety of Reitz's career, with the majority related to Rosetta Records and to Reitz's associated music research since the 1970s. The collection contains company documents, research notes, manuscripts, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photocopies, photographs, a variety of audio and moving image formats, as well as magazines and books.

The Rotary Club of Durham was chartered in 1915 as part of Rotary International, an organization of service clubs. The records from the Rotary Club of Durham include bulletins, committee files, membership cards, board minutes, anniversary projects, photographs, scrapbooks, and other miscellaneous materials relating to the activities and members of the club.

Rotary International was established as a men's service organization in Chicago in 1905. This collection contains records relating to Rotary International, District 7710, which includes counties in central North Carolina. Includes the district's conference programs, conference minutes, executive committee minutes, correspondence, directories, policies and procedures. Also includes information about the district's exchange program and various club histories, including numerous club rosters and club bulletins for the Chapel Hill and Raleigh Rotary Clubs. There are also clippings, newsletters, photographs, and slides related to the organization's activities.

Roundell Tristram Toke (1896-1957) was a British Army officer from Folkestone, England who was stationed in China during the Boxer Rebellion, and in Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. Collection comprises diaries and photographs documenting in detail his military service in China and Japan during the Boxer Rebellion, 1900, and Russo-Japanese War, 1905 to 1907. The first diary is set in China; the other three in Japan. All four contain daily descriptions of weather, social and administrative activities, military engagements, rations, medical training, diplomacy, and other details, with some sketches of formations and drill patterns. The diaries are accompanied by 146 photographs from China and Japan. The earlier group shows officers and soldiers from the eight allied nations, ruins and battle sites, and other scenes in Tianjin and Beijing following the Boxer Rebellion, 1900; later images show civilians and street life; military camps; drills; equipment; engagements; Russian war prisoners and their camps; towns; landscapes; harbors; and a few social gatherings. The collection also includes Toke's leather cigar case, inscribed on the inside with his postings with dates, beginning with Weihai, China, 1900.
