William Lemuel Clegg was a Methodist minister in the North Carolina Conference and a Duke University graduate and Trustee. Collection contains sermons, notes, clippings, diaries, photographs, and printed material from Clegg's student days at Duke University (Trinity, 1924; Divinity, 1930); and his career as a Methodist minister and Burlingon District Superintendent of churches in the North Carolina Conference. Clegg was elected a Trustee at Duke University in March 1961, but passed away suddenly at a Duke football game in Durham, N.C., November, 1961.

Contains personal and professional papers relating to the life and work of James Tough Cleland, preacher, Dean of the Duke University Chapel (1955-1973), and Professor of Preaching in the Divinity School (1945-1968). Materials include addresses, sermons, lecture notes, speeches, clippings, printed materials, correspondence, a tape recording, committee records, course materials, photographs, subject files, a scrapbook, diaries, and gift albums. Albums include sketches, engravings, frontispieces, and colored illustrations from printed materials. The Coalition for Positive Sexuality is a grassroots, not-for-profit, activist organization funded through grants and donations. CPS seeks to give teens information about sexual health and safe sex, and to facilitate dialogue in public schools about sex education. This collection consists of nine 18x24 posters produced by artist Jeanette May for the CPS Girl Germs campaign.

Cobb, Jr., from 2012 to 2014, with members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and others around the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer and for research for Cobb's book, THIS NONVIOLENT STUFF'LL GET YOU KILLED: HOW GUNS MADE THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT POSSIBLE.

Frances Power Cobbe was an Irish writer, social reformer, anti-vivisection activist, and leading women's suffrage campaigner. Cobbe wrote the first letter to Mrs. Madden, undated but probably in 1886, regarding vivisection along with the poor treatment of horses. She wrote the second, undated, letter to Miss Galtz[?], regarding a planned visit.

The Coca-Cola Company was founded in Atlanta in 1886 by John Pemberton. The Star Salesman Kit was part of a program developed to train Coca-Cola salesmen. The Coca-Cola Company Star Salesman Kit dates from 1949-1951 and consists of numbered training lessons, memorabilia buttons, 35mm filmstrips and accompanying phonograph records, which together comprise a training program for Coca-Cola sales employees. Topics covered include increasing sales, product placement, stock magazines, coolers and vending machines, and selling to women. Acquired as a part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

The Coca-Cola Company and its flagship product, Coca-Cola (a carbonated soft drink), were founded by John S. Pemberton in 1886. Collection contains seven advertising "Fact Sheets" created by the Advertising and Sales Promotion Department of the Coca-Cola Company in 1969. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Arthur Auckland Leopold Pedro Cochrane served in the British Navy from 1839-1886, where he fought in the Anglo-Chinese war and rose to the rank of admiral. He was also instrumental in administering the Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company during its early years. His brother, Ernest Grey Lambton Cochrane was also active in the Royal Navy from 1847-1873, participating in the British campaign to suppress the slave trade in West Africa during the 1860s. He was also a landowner and landlord of the Redcastle Estate in County Donegal, Ireland, and served in his later years as High Sheriff for County Donegal. The collection contains correspondence, legal and financial documents, notes and writings, notebooks and diaries, clippings, printed books and pamphlets, photographs, maps, charts, diagrams and technical drawings pertaining to the lives and careers of Arthur Auckland Leopold Pedro and Ernest Grey Lambton Cochrane, and to the Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company. The papers span the years 1777-1957, with the bulk of the collection being dated from 1850-1905, and document the naval careers of Arthur Auckland Leopold Pedro Cochrane and Ernest Grey Lambton Cochrane, the role of the Cochrane family as landlords in Western Ulster, and the development of the colonial asphalt industry in Trinidad during the 19th century.

Rhodes scholar and lawyer of Asheville, N.C. Collection is divided into the following categories: Correspondence (1815-1969, some transcribed); Writings (1682-1965); Speeches (1896-1965); Miscellany (ca. 1908); Clippings (1792-1975); Printed materials (1865-1977); Volumes (1886-1954); Pictures, late 19th and early 20th centuries; and an Alphabetical file (1787-1977), arranged by topic. Most of the material spans the years 1900-1960. Included are personal correspondence and materials relating to Cocke's political and civic interests; family correspondence and photographs; clippings; and scrapbooks. Cocke's many correspondents include Sam Ervin, B. Everett Jordan, and Terry Sanford. Correspondence topics include the Democratic Party; life as an American law student in England; English law compared to American law; and travels in Europe. Some letters refer to Thomas Wolfe, whom Cocke knew.

Copy writer and advertising executive for several agencies primarily in the Atlanta, Ga. area. The Adrienne Cohen Papers span the years 1963-2000 and include print advertisements, copy designs, direct marketing mailings and brochures, storyboards, audiotapes, 16mm and 35mm films of radio and television commercials that document Cohen's work as an advertising copy writer and creative executive. Companies represented include Marschalk, Young & Rubicam, and McCann-Erickson. Clients include Coca-Cola, Drackett, Eastern Airways, Gulf Oil, and Texize. Acquired as part of the John W. Lara Langer Cohen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She started collecting zines, including trading zines and corresponding with Sarah Dyer, in the early 1990s. The collection consists of approximately 280 zine titles (some with multiple issues) collected by Cohen and several hundred pieces of correspondence addressed to her or to her zines, Runt and Oh Oh Cheri, dating from the 1990s. Acquired by the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Roberta Cohen is one of America's earliest international human rights professionals. Over the course of her career, she has served as diplomat, policy maker, scholar, author, and activist who has worked with the United Nations and for the Jimmy Carter Administration on humanitarian and human rights issues. The Roberta Cohen papers document Cohen's involvement with many NGOs, think tanks, government and United Nations bodies working on issues of international human rights, displacement, war, and humanitarianism.

Bert Cole (1869-1958) was a circus performer, announcer, and advertising agent who developed a marketing scheme called the Bert Cole System in which circus elephants were draped with business advertisements during circus parades and local events. Collection includes black-and-white photographs and postcards, receipts and licenses, and correspondence that document Bert Cole's advertising business while working with circuses including the Charles Sparks Circus and the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus. The banners promoted a variety of businesses, including automobiles and automobile dealers; automotive tires; banks; flour and other food products; local retail and clothing stores; and tobacco products. Many of the photographs are annotated with the date and place the photograph was taken. Circus performers and clowns identified in the photographs include Bert Noyes, Louis Plamondon (1872-1934), Lon Moore (1865-1920), and Mickey McDonald, as well as images of Bert's father, circus owner George S. Cole, with his elephant-based advertising service he ran prior to Bert assuming the practice under his own name. Also represented in the photographs is the elephant Mary, part of the Sparks rail show, notable for having been executed in 1916 after killing her handler. Photographs depict locations throughout the South and upper Midwest, including Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Indiana, Wyoming, and Little Big Horn, Montana. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

John Nelson Cole, Jr. was an undergraduate student at Trinity College from 1905-1909. The scrapbook includes diary-style entries, photographs, clippings, receipts, tickets, poems, short stories, correspondence and other memorabilia related to his final year at Trinity College and his subsequent career. The scrapbook ranges in date from 1905-1919.

Residents of Canada, Europe, and Asheville, N.C. Collection consists largely of a two-volume diary, 1895-1919, of Isabel Fleury Coleman, a twenty-three volume set of diaries, 1904-1971, belonging to Mary Augusta Coleman, and photographs of Fleury-Coleman family members and some of their residences. There are also two volumes pertaining to Mary Coleman's personal accounts and the "French Broad River Garden Club, 1967-1969," a few items of correspondence and genealogy, and a number of clippings and printed materials. Topics covered by the materials include music instruction (violin and piano), women's society life in Asheville, N.C., and women's travel in European countries during the 20th century.

Robert Taylor Cole was a professor in Duke's Political Science department, specializing in comparative politics, Europe and the British Commonwealth and served as Provost to the University from 1960-1969. The collection includes correspondence, student recommendations, and writings. The material ranges in date from 1933-1991.

Employee of the Lepetkatta Tea Co., Ltd., in Barbaru, Assam, India. Cole signed his letters "Johnson." Collection comprises weekly letters Johnson wrote to his parents in England while he served as an engineer for a tea estate, and provides commentary written from a late-colonial perspective. There is information regarding the management of the tea estate, tea manufacture, tea prices and trade, and the transformation of work processes and personal lives by mechanization, the introduction of electricity, and brick making. In addition, Johnson wrote about local customs, labor, wildlife, weather, religious festivals, disease outbreaks (esp. cholera), and Indian politics. He also wrote about various engine repairs he undertook; transportation; his favorite pastimes (including hunting and playing polo); his various horses and pets; medical and dental treatments; people he met; as well as his activities in the volunteer British military guard, where he participated in military tests, drills, and sports, and served as Farrier Sergeant. His final letters contained extensive commentary on England's role in World War I, as well as the impact of the war on Assam. Includes a few postcards, one photograph, a clipping, and a tea invoice. There is also one undated letter written to Johnson by a native missionary who requested assistance.

Materials in the collection relate to Collaborations in the Creative and the Sacred, Inc., an artistic and creative educational organization operating from 1980-1992. Collection includes records related to the annual summer conference, held by the group from 1981-1992.

Joséphine Collomb was a nursing student in 1905 at the Maison-êcole d'infirmières privées, founded by Léonie Chaptal in 1905 with a class size of 24 students, in the Plaisance quarter of Paris. Collection comprises a nursing manuscript notebook (179 pages) maintained in French by Joséphine Collomb during her studies at the Maison-êcole d'infirmières privées. There are 175 pages of notes and 4 pages listing medical instruments. Topics of the notes include microbes, sterilization, operating in the countryside, a nurse's duties, suturing, dressing, antiseptics, dislocation, setting limbs, contusions, burns, epistaxis, blood disorders, hypodermic injections, morphine, caffeine and its uses, ether, serotherapy, fevers, cauterizing, prophylaxis for cholera, measles, typhoid, and tuberculosis, with an explanation of causes and treatments. The volume includes a color map of France with a table of Départements.

CBS is an American commercial broadcast television and radio network that grew out of a Chicago-based radio network in the late 1920s. Collection consists of 8 reports produced by CBS in the late 1930s addressing trends in radio broadcasting and advertising. Acquired as part of the John W. Duke admitted the first five African American undergraduates in September, 1963. In 2013, the University held a year-long celebration called Commemorating 50 Years of Black Students at Duke with a variety of academic, artistic, and service-oriented events. The collection includes programs, brochures, clippings, materials kept by Staff Director of the commemoration Keith Daniel, reflections written by alumni, and interviews with some of the first black undergraduate students recorded in 2012.

Selection of reports and publications issued by the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, formed in 2001 in Washington DC. Topics of reports include: North Korean surveillance, gulags and prison camps, political propaganda, women and children's health, living conditions in the country, refugees and asylum seekers in China, and state violence against North Koreans.

Progressive policy think-tank based in North Carolina. Spanning the years 1983 to 2008, the Common Sense Foundation (CSF) Records contain manuscript, print, audiovisual, and electronic materials related to the foundation's administration and work on various policy initiatives, which include the death penalty, taxation and economic justice, the environment, gay rights, health care, testing in public schools and other education issues, the tobacco industry, and North Carolina politics. The collection primarily contains clippings, reports, administrative documents, and correspondence, including emails, and is organized into the following series: Administrative Files, Audiovisual Materials, Board of Directors, Photographs, Printed Materials, Research Files, Staff Files, and Website. The largest group of materials relates to CSF's research on public policy. Several thousand electronic files in the collection have been migrated to a library server. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

Lesbian feminist choral group established in the Durham-Raleigh-Chapel Hill area (N.C.) in 1983. The Common Woman Chorus records contain material dating from 1985 to 2010. The records primarily comprise sheet music, concert programs, publicity, correspondence, and administrative records. Although the records contain mostly print material, they also include some color photographs, audiocassettes, videos, electronic word documents, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

The Communist League of America (CLA) was founded in 1929 by James P. Cannon, Max Schachtman, and Martin Abern following their expulsion in 1928 from the Workers (Communist) Party. In 1934 the CLA merged with the American Workers Party to form the Workers Party of the United States. Collection contains correspondence, memoranda, internal party bulletins, financial reports and other documents relating to the activities of the Communist League of America.

The Community Service Center (CSC) was established at Duke University in 1990 to promote community service on campus and to coordinate activities between campus service groups and similar organizations in Durham, NC. The collection contains administrative records and materials related to events and programs hosted by the Community Service Center. This includes correspondence, proposals, reports, newsletters, marketing materials, clippings, and photographs.

Compton Advertising, Inc. was founded in 1937, formed out of the former company Blackman Advertising, Inc. In the 1980s Compton merged with, and was eventually absorbed by, Saatchi & Saatchi. The Compton Advertising, Inc. Records cover the years 1915-1956 and includes proofs of house advertisements and brochures promoting Blackman Advertising, Inc.; its successor Compton Advertising, Inc.; and the Blackett, Sample & Hummert, Inc. agency. Contains an album of mounted photographs; and credentials charts intended for new business presentations. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

The Confederate States of America (CSA) was formed in 1861 by eleven states in the southern United States that declared secession from the U.S. in order to protect their right to own slaves. The CSA collapsed in 1865 after its defeat in the American Civil War by Union forces. Collection was assembled from various sources and includes a variety of materials originating from administrative bodies within the Confederate States of America, including the Army, Executive Department, Congress, state governments and agencies, and the Navy. In addition to official records, the collection also includes some personal correspondence and miscellany.

Edwin Grant Conklin was a biologist and an educator. Collection contains chiefly family and professional correspondence. Includes letters addressed to Conklin; to his wife, Belle Adkinson Conklin, and to other family members. The majority of letters are written by Conklin and his wife, parents, and children. Conklin's correspondence with wife Belle pertains largely to their dating courtship. There are lettters from other relatives, friends, academic and scientific colleagues, Freedmen, educators, and Methodist clergymen.

Grace Walcott Hazard Conkling was an American author, a poet and an English professor. Collection comprises two letters written to Conkling. The first was written by Florence Converse at the Atlantic Monthly, dated 1918 October 19, in regard to the publishing of Conkling's poem, "Names," in the magazine. The second was written by Elisabeth Cutting at the North American Review, dated 1925 June 22, asking Conkling to be a book reviewer, and mentioning Amy Lowell in association with a speech Conkling made.

Elizabeth Hatcher, Duke University class of 1939, was a photographer and member of the Explorers' Club, along with her future husband Bob Conner. The collection includes many photographs, a scrapbook, letters, and other materials documenting campus life at Duke in the late 1930s.
