Charles W. Hoyt Company records, 1894-1973 and undated, bulk 1909-1928 4.4 Linear Feet 3,300 Items

The records of the Charles W. Hoyt Company advertising agency span the years 1894-1973 with the bulk dating between 1909-1928. The collection primarily documents the founding and operation of the company, and to a lesser extent the personal activities of the Hoyt family (Charles, Effie, Winthrop, and Everett) and Winthrop's service during World War II in the U. S. Army Air Force. Materials include correspondence, scrapbooks, company publications and manuals, financial records, clippings, diaries, writings, drawings, photographs, house advertisements, Nazi medals, song lyrics, and printed material. Very little information exists in the collection concerning the Hoyt Company's clients. The only client advertisements that survive were produced for Merck and Co. The Hoyt company scrapbooks document some activities for clients including Arnold Bakers, Golden Blossom Honey, Jamaica Tourist Board, KLM, Stanley Home Products, the Charles B. Woolson Co. and the State of New Hampshire. The collection contains correspondence between family members as well as between the company and Merck and Co., the Charles B. Knox Co., and William Benton, one of the founders of the Benton and Bowles advertising agency. Another notable person mentioned in the collection is Hoyt Company employee Samuel Meek, who would go on to become an important executive for the J. Walter Thompson Company advertising agency. The collection is organized into the Company Series; the Family Series; and the Winthrop Hoyt World War II Series. Large-format items are located in the Oversize Materials.

Charlie Steinmann was an executive in the outdoor advertising industry, primarily in the Pennsylvania region, working with Superior Sign Systems, Penn-York Advertising and Lamar Outdoor Advertising. He was inducted into the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) Hall of Fame in 1995. The Charlie Steinmann Papers span the years 1937-1988 and include printed materials, photographs, videocassettes, correspondence, financial reports and maps. Companies represented in the collection include Bishop-Holder Advertising, Lamar Outdoor Advertising, Penn Adams Advertising and Penn-York Advertising, all of which operated in the central Pennsylvania region. Charlotte Brontë letter to Ellen Nussey, 1840 November 12 0.1 Linear Feet (2 items)

Collection comprises a autographed letter (4 pgs., 19 cm x 23 cm) written by Charlotte Brontë to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey on 1840 November 12, possibly from Yorkshire. Pages also hold sketches of her and of a horse head created by William Weightman (1814-1842), who was assistant curate to Patrick Brontë beginning in 1839. Topics include Weightman’s drawings; an invitation to her to provide entertainment; procuring students for a local school; and the abusive and dissolving relationship between Mr. Collins, who was a curate, and his wife. Includes Brontë’s negative assessment of Mr. Collins’ character. Collection includes a typescript transcription of the letter.

Charlotte Brontë needlepoint flower study, approximately 1840 0.9 Linear Feet

Decorative needlepoint flower study on a cream background, possibly worked in wool thread, of a white lily at top, with light pink accents on leaves and blue stamen, surrounded by five green and blue-green leaves. At lower left is a deep pink peony with white accents, surrounded by three green and brown leaves with veins in brown and blue. At lower right is a red carnation, with pink and brown petal edges. It is surrounded by a carnation bud, and two green leaves with veins in brown and blue. Brontë completed the piece around 1840. It was placed underneath a green velvet mat with oval center opening measuring 11 x 14 cm, then enclosed in a wooden frame 25 x 31 cm, which was painted gold, then "antiqued" on three sides. In hand-painted black lettering on gold paint at the bottom of the frame appears the statement, "Sampler by Charlotte Bronte," although the work is not a sampler.

Medical illustrator, sculptor, and exhibit designer, affiliated with the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. Collection consists of the exhibit detail book containing text and illustrations for the exhibit "Ostetrical Forceps Delivery," curated by Dr. Frederick H. Falls and illustrated by Charlotte S. Holt, as well as five large and one small exhibition panels. The exhibit consisted of five sections: Anesthesia; Technique; Management of Newborn; Pathology; and History and Indications. Within each section, Falls and Holt presented examples of situations leading to a forceps birth, correct technique for the use of forceps, the issues arising from this method, and the treatment of the newborn after this procedure. Produced mostly by the Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio of China, documentary films and newsreels were two of the major mass media and communication channels in China from the 1950s through 1970s. This collection consists mainly of film advertisements and transcripts of Chinese documentary films from 1946(?)-1985. Other materials include printed advertisements and other publicity for Chinese and foreign films and theatre productions. Chinese women's health and family planning posters, 1950s-1978 2.0 Linear Feet

Posters were used in cities and villages across China to promote health and hygiene, including for pregnancy and childbirth via the Patriotic Health Campaign from the 1950s through the 1970s, and to communicate limiting family sizes in the 1970s and the "one child" policy in the 1980s. The Chinese women's health and family planning posters include posters with images and text about childbirth, women's hygiene, and family planning.

Chris Costner Sizemore papers, 1952-1989 (bulk 1956-1979) 8 Linear Feet

The Chris Costner Sizemore Papers span the time period 1952-1989, with the bulk of the papers dating between 1956 and 1979. The collection consists largely of correspondence; diaries and writings by Sizemore; publicity centered on film and book promotions or speaking engagements; materials related to her appearances; interviews and documentary materials (including film, video- and audiocassettes); and assorted materials including photographs, legal and financial papers. Most items relate to Sizemore's struggle with multiple personality disorder (dissociative identity disorder), both personally through letters, writings, and diaries, and publicly through interviews, documentary media, and news clippings. The papers provide an in-depth look into the life of a woman with a rare disorder who later came to clearly articulate her life to the public and become a mental health advocate. A biography was written by her doctors in 1957, Corbett Thigpen and Hervey Cleckley, called The Three Faces of Eve. It was turned into a film the next year. Under the pseudonym, Evelyn Lancaster, Sizemore co-authored The Final Face of Eve with James Poling in 1958. In 1977 she wrote, under her given name, the autobiography I'm Eve. The Correspondence Series is arranged chronologically, and consists primarily of incoming letters. Dr. Corbett Thigpen, the doctor to deliver the original diagnosis of multiple personality disorder, is prominent in much of the collection. This series documents his relationship to Sizemore during treatment and continuing well into the 1970s. He corresponded with Sizemore about his writings, revealing much about the publication of The Three Faces of Eve (book), and its subsequent movie release. The series also contains correspondence with other doctors, family members, Sizemore's editors and publishers, and organizations for which she lectured. The Writings Series is comprised primarily of the holograph manuscript, typescript, final galley proofs, and paperback edition of I'm Eve, the memoir written by Sizemore with the help of Elen Pittillo. This comprehensive view of the book's publication is represented from handwritten copy to final edition. The Writings Series also includes some short descriptions of Sizemore's life and examples of her poetry, as well as a few writings by others. There are six diaries in the Diaries Series, kept during parts of the 1950s and 1970s. Within these volumes, Sizemore discloses inner thoughts, which reveal very personal information about enduring mental illness and its effects on her family. The Publicity Series includes news clippings and journal articles about Sizemore and multiple personality disorder, as well as media related to her published works. The Events Series contains materials and ephemera related to Sizemore's public life of art shows, lectures, broadcasts, and appearances, often for mental health organizations. It also contains materials from her book tour for The Three Faces of Eve. The Photographs Series contains pictures from these events and of Sizemore's family life. The Additional Materials Series contains financial and legal papers, medical files, and identifying documents. There is also an Audio Visual Materials Series that contains interviews and documentary materials that again reflect the public's interest in Sizemore's life, as well as her own desire to document and share her experiences in writing, speaking, and art. Included is a documentary film by Dr. Thigpen, and video and audiocassettes of television interviews, other appearances, and of family members discussing a shared past (sound quality of some of the audiocassettes is very poor).

Chris Johnson farmworker photographs, 1990s 1.5 Linear Feet (2 boxes)

Collection comprises 124 black-and-white digital photographic prints taken by North Carolina photographer Chris Johnson, portraying North Carolina farmworkers and migrant laborers in work settings as well as in their field camps and homes, many of which are revealed as dilapidated and unsanitary. Several series document labor organization and protests, including a five-year strike protesting working conditions for Mount Olive Pickle company workers. Other subjects in the images include the children and families of the farmworkers; volunteer teachers and organizers, some of whom are from the organization Student Action with Farmworkers; tobacco and Christmas tree growing in North Carolina; and street scenes from the border crossing areas of Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros, Mexico. Christopher Burkett is a photographer from Vernonia (Columbia County), Oregon. Collection includes twenty-eight Cibachrome photographic prints taken by photographer Christopher Burkett of Christian icons appearing in two 15th century Ethiopic manuscript books of scriptures (MS. Ethiopic 34 and 35) located in the Rubenstein Library of Duke University. The images were painted by two distinct hands, probably copying the images from an original and earlier unidentified source. Themes include a series of scenes from the life of Christ, and images include angels, St. George, and the Virgin Mary.

Christopher Sims photographs, 2005-2018 3 Linear Feet (3 boxes)

Christopher Sims is a documentary photographer from Atlanta, Georgia, currently on the faculty at Duke University, Durham, N.C. The 71 color digital photographs in this collection appear in his book, The Pretend Village: Inside the U.S. Military Training Grounds (2021). The photographs were taken by Sims from 2005-2018 at fictitious Iraqi and Afghan villages constructed on U.S. Army bases in remote areas of North Carolina and Louisiana, and in Death Valley, California. Images taken between military training exercises show actors, many of them real-life immigrant Afghans and Iraqis, playing police officers, doctors, craftspeople, farmers, and café owners. Images taken during training include American soldiers in motion or at rest, fictional civilians and insurgents, and simulations of dead or wounded soldiers and civilians. Other images are of buildings, streets, fake interiors, props, rubble, and graffiti and murals. The inkjet prints measure 17x22 inches. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Chuck Stone papers, 1931-2007 and undated 36.2 Linear Feet (18,650 items)

Charles Sumner (Chuck) Stone was a prominent African-American journalist, with a career spanning from his early days at the New York Age (1958-1959) to his position as editor and columnist at the Philadelphia Daily News (1972-1991). Between 1965 and 1967 he was special assistant and press secretary to New York representative Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. He served as mediator between the police and suspected criminals for over 20 years, most notably in his negotiation of the Graterford Prison hostage crisis in 1981. He is the author of multiple books, from political analyses to a novel about his time with Powell and (in 2003) a children's book. He was also an educator for many years, as Professor of English at the University of Delaware from 1985-1991 and Walter Spearman Professor of Journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill from 1991 to 2005, when he retired. The collection contains clippings, correspondence, writings, scrapbooks, photographs, video, audio, research files, and printed materials pertaining to the life and career of Chuck Stone. The papers span the years 1931-2007 and document Stone's journalism career and writings, his political career and relationship with Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., and his role as an educator.

Cipe Pineles papers, 1925-2005 and undated 18.0 Linear Feet

Cipe Pineles was an Austrian-born Jewish artist noted for innovations in magazine design, illustration and typography, based primarily in New York. Collection includes correspondence, photographs, drawings and illustrations and other design work, paintings, advertising and promotional materials, drafts of manuscripts, recipes, financial records and other printed materials that document Pineles's professional and private life, including correspondence and service orders during World War II. Collection also includes materials relating to a number of individuals: Ben Shahn, Carol Burton Fripp, Edward Sorel, Jay Leyda, John Alcorn, Mehemed Fehmy Agha, Sidney Meyers, Will Burtin and William Golden. Civil Rights Movement and Wayside Theatre photographs, 1960s 0.2 Linear Feet (1 box)

Collection comprises 18 black-and-white photographs taken in the 1960s, assembled by a private collector and organized into two distinct groups: nine journalistic photographs documenting civil rights movement events, some credited to Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) photographers Cliff Vaughs, Danny Lyon, and Rufus Hinton, with others unattributed; and nine prints of an unidentified multi-racial dramatic performance, circa mid-1960s, found in the archives of the Wayside Theatre in Middletown, Virginia. The Civil Rights prints typically include detailed press captions on the backs, and include images of injured and jailed demonstrators, police, bombed-out churches, and portraits of activists Fannie Lou Hamer and Atlanta's Markham Street rent protest leader Willie Williams. Civil War Manuscripts Map collection, 1861-1865 1 Linear Feet (14 items)

Sketch maps from the Civil War period representing geographic areas in Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and one unidentified location. These maps chiefly depict roads, waterways, mountain ranges, fortifications, counties, cities, and towns. There are two battlefield maps present, including Bull Run (Va., 1861; a Confederate map) and Spring Hill (Tenn., 1864). Most maps are unsigned; however, there are maps drawn by A. M. Thornton, Barbette Sims, and Edward Fontaine, as well as Confederate Army engineers A. B. DeSaulles and Jeremy F. Gilmer. Primarily drawn in ink on paper or linen cloth. Sizes of maps vary between 24 x 20 cm. and 63 x 60 cm.

Clarence Holte advertising portfolio, 1944 and undated 1 Linear Feet

Resident of Harlem, N.Y., advertising executive, and bibliofile. Collection comprises one spiral-bound portfolio (21 pgs.) containing clippings, drawings, and typewritten notes, intended as a prospectus for a proposed new magazine supplement targeted at African Americans, to be carried in newspapers nationwide. In the prospectus, Holte explained the historical role played by African American newspapers in their community, as well as economic growth that made them stable consumers and an attractive targeted market. The advertising opportunity was directed at Lever Brothers Company. Includes 5 pages of correspondence between Holte, Lever Brothers, and THIS WEEK MAGAZINE, all laid-in at the end of the prospectus, that made it clear that Holte's proposal was rejected. Holte prepared for John Bowles, President of Rexall Drug & Chemical Co. Topics addressed include location, geographic divisions, climate, population, age, occupations, literacy, ethnic groups, income, consumer and government expenditures, distribution of companies by taxable profits, health and health facilities, government revenue and expenditures, balance of trade, political parties, transportation, telecommunications, periodicals, and cinemas. Includes an appendix, maps, and tables.

Clarence Louis Frank Gohdes papers, 1811-1990s and undated, bulk 1905-1981, bulk 1905-1981 6.2 Linear Feet (11 boxes) 4650 Items

Collection consists of research materials, correspondence, writings, clippings and other printed materials, and a few photographs, mainly from the latter half of Gohdes's career. The earliest date (1811) refers to reproductions of original research materials. Correspondence with other American Literature teachers and authors, combined with other materials relating to Gohdes's institutional and organizational affiliations, in particular with Duke University, the Modern Language Association (MLA), and the journal AMERICAN LITERATURE, comprise the most substantive aspects of this collection. They provide insight into American literary scholarship in the early and mid-twentieth century. Noted authors and scholars of the time whose letters and other writings are in the collection include Alexander Blackburn, Oscar Cargill, Lewis Chase, Robert Elias, Norman Foerster, Arthur Rubin, Arthur Quinn, and Upton Sinclair. Original manuscripts by Gohdes, inscribed reprints of writings by his colleagues, and materials relating to many major British and American literary figures, make up the rest of the collection. There is substantial material on Edgar Allen Poe and American humor. The collection also includes papers documenting Gohdes's research and writing for his last book project, a history of the muscadine grape in North Carolina entitled Scuppernong, North Carolina's Grape and Its Wines. Clarissa Sligh papers, 1950-2010 70 Linear Feet

Clarissa Sligh is an artist and author of works such as Wrongly Bodied, Reading Dick and Jane with Me, What's Happening With Momma? Jake in Transition, and It Wasn't Little Rock. Collection includes materials relating to Sligh's career as an artist, with particular focus on her various projects and exhibitions in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Projects represented include Jake In Transition/Wrongly Bodied, Witness to Dissent/It Wasn't Little Rock, Coast to Coast, Sandy Ground, Malcolm X: Man, Ideal, Icon, What's Happening With Momma? and an NC Reunion/Slavery project, along with several others. Sligh's files frequently include correspondence, research materials, drafts of essays and exhibition plans, clippings and other source materials, contact sheets and slides, and occasionally exhibit pieces and texts from the actual installation. Other items included in the collection are exhibition binders and scrapbooks kept by Sligh to document her career; correspondence and communication between Sligh and other artists, galleries, or publishers; catalogs and publicity materials from Sligh's many exhibitions, shows, and publications, artists' books, materials documenting Sligh's art and process, large framed photographic prints; and other materials. The Classical Club, founded in 1910, was a social academic club for male students and faculty of Trinity College (now Duke University). Female students joined the club in 1924. The club promoted interest in the language, literature, and art of ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Materials include minutes, constitutions, bylaws, a sketch, calendars, membership lists, correspondence, a draft of a paper, and clippings. Major subjects include Trinity College history, Duke University history, student groups, male college students, study of classical languages and appreciation of classical literature. Materials range in date from 1910 to 1944. English.
