Active in Disciples of Christ in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and other states. Husband, Louis Riddell, was a minister for the denomination. Collection contains correspondence, diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, photographs, and other materials relating to Riddell and her husband, Louis Riddell. The materials document not only Riddell's personal life as the wife of a minister and her involvement in the Disciples of Christ ministry, but also the evolving role of women in American religious communities. Notebooks contain sermons that Ettie Riddell delivered to women's groups. Her diaries date chiefly from the 1930s to the 1960s, but there are also two early diaries from 1894 and 1896. Other materials, especially correspondence, clippings, and sermon notes, document the ministry of Louis Riddell and the lives of other Riddell family members.

Marilla Ricker was an influential suffragist and pioneering woman lawyer. Her scrapbook consists chiefly of newspaper clippings by and about Ricker, chronicling her long activist career and public life advocating for suffrage and equal rights for women. It also includes correspondence and ephemera.

Dr. McMurry Richey was a faculty member of the Duke Divinity School and long-time director of the school's continuing education program. His papers cover a variety of topics, including materials related to continuing education, Duke Divinity School's annual convocation, the church and society, ethics, race relations, Duke's integration, and poverty.

Collection consists of audio cassette tapes, transcripts, notes, photographs, and collected printed materials from Evelyn Rich's doctoral research on Ku Klux Klan ideology, conducted between 1984 and 1986. Contains interviews with Klan leaders and white supremacists David Duke, Don Black, Glen Miller, Stanley McCollum, and others, as well as recordings of rallies and speeches. Also includes documentation of Klan activities and copies of literature published by Invisible Empire, Knights of the KKK; the White Patriot Party; Knights of the KKK; the Populist Party; Mountain Church; NAAWP; Institute for Historical Review; and other white supremacists and white Christian nationalist groups.

Merchant in Augusta, Georgia. Chiefly correspondence of William T. Richards and his family and friends. Richards was a New England native, and three early letters from the 1840s are from a sister in Danbury, Connecticut. One letter from Chattooga County, Georgia (1865 Aug. 31) speaks of the devastation in that area from the Civil War. An early item is a power of attorney of 1833 from the merchant Joseph Ganahl to Francis Ganahl. Also includes a bill for goods bought in New York, N.Y. in October, 1865; invitations; announcements; and clippings which relate to William Hill, once Secretary of State for North Carolina. One item is an announcement of William T. Richard's retirement in 1903 as treasurer and paymaster of the Georgia Railroad. Some materials relate to the Hill and Thomas families in N.C., but their relation to the Richards family is unknown.

Nancy Richardson is a feminist, lesbian, anti-racist theologian and ordained minister with the United Church of Christ. Collection includes biographical and personal materials, correspondence, publications, speeches, and other writings. The material highlights her feminist, anti-racist theological and ministerial work, particularly that with the Women's Theological Center in Boston. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Judy Richardson is a veteran of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee who worked in Mississippi during the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project in 1964. She later worked with Blackside, Inc., on the Eyes on the Prize civil rights documentary series, and co-edited Hands on the Freedom Plow, about women's experiences in SNCC. Her papers include materials from her years working on staff at SNCC in Atlanta and Mississippi; her involvement with the Drum and Spear Bookstore in Washington D.C.; extensive print and audiovisual materials from her work in documentary film, including projects like Malcolm X: Make It Plain, Eyes on the Prize, and Scarred Justice: The Orangeburg Massacre; her correspondence and drafts from the editing of Hands on the Freedom Plow; project and event files from numerous committees, speaking engagements, and panels; personal files, including her FOIA about her SNCC service in the 1960s; and subject files collected from various projects.

James Burchell Richardson was a plantation owner, of Sumter District, S.C. This collection contains family letters and business papers of James B. Richardson, plantation owner and slaveholder, and of his descendants. The letters and papers contain references to the allotment of slave labor for road and railroad construction; the impressment of slaves for work on fortifications during the Civil War; political wrangles; James B. and Richard C. Richardson's activities in the Confederate Army; social and economic conditions on South Carolina plantations before, during, and after the Civil War; the postwar depression and poverty in the South; and tenant farming during the postwar period.

North Carolina born and raised composer, Duke alumnus, and composer-in-residence and professor at Carleton College. Collection comprises primarily scores, music sketches, recordings, professional files, and correspondence that follow the development of Rhodes' compositional career. Includes published compositions and unpublished student works for both vocal and instrumental ensembles, as well as concert programs, newspaper clippings, and other publicity related items from performances of his music.

Madame de Rhinfeld, née St. Clair, grew up in a convent in France, where she was instructed in the construction of artificial flowers. She later used this skill to make a living in England. Collection comprises an handwritten, unpublished manuscript volume (256 written pages, plus 45 watercolor and 5 pen and ink plates of illustrations) by Madame de Rhinfeld, written around 1830. In the manuscript, Rhinfeld provides detailed instruction on how to create 24 different artificial flowers, and describes the tools used to make them. Flowers include pomegranate, hyacinth, roses, pansies, narcissus, geraniums, and orange flowers, among others. Includes watercolor diagrams regarding the construction of each flower, with additional paintings of the finished piece. The instructions are accompanied by a chapter of poetry, stories, quotations, and commentary related to each flower. Scattered throughout the manuscript are other pen and ink drawings. Includes an index to flowers and to poets.

Grindall Reynolds was a Unitarian clergyman and historian of Concord, Massachusetts. Collection comprises a letter from Grindall Reynolds to Mr. Clute (1885 August 5) where Reynolds provides encouragement regarding support of a parish.

Adam Reynolds is a conceptual documentary photographer whose work explores contemporary political conflict, primarily in the Middle East. His series "Architecture of an Existential Threat" was the 2016 winner of the ADA Collection Award for an Emerging Documentarian. Taken in Israel between 2013 and 2015, the photographs document bomb shelters and sealable rooms to which residents of the State of Israel are required to have access. There are over 10,000 of these public and private bomb shelters in Israel and the Occupied Territories. The photographs show the way these spaces are normalized in Israeli life, using them as community centers, places of worship, or bars. Reynolds writes that "these shelters are the architecture of an existential threat--both real and perceived."

Henriette Reybaud was a French novelist. Collection comprises two letters written by Reybaud. Recipients include Virginie Ancelot and Paul Lacroix. Collection includes transcriptions of the letters.

The Revolutionary Workers League (RWL) was a radical left group in the United States active from 1935 until about 1947. The League was formed by Hugo Oehler in November 1935 following a split from the Workers Party (WP), a split precipitated by the party's decision to merge the WP with the Socialist Party. It published the Fighting Worker newspaper. Collection contains letters, memoranda, meeting minutes, party bulletins, financial reports, circulars, and other documents relating to the activities of the Revolutionary Workers League, 1935-1945.

A non-profit organization, located in Durham, N.C., founded in 1977 for the purpose of providing support for women in ministry, persons of faith working for justice in the South, and religious organizations that address women's needs. The records are relevant to the study of the relationships among religion, politics, and society, particularly how women in ministry have confronted a number of social issues facing the South. Information pertaining to the Equal Rights Amendment, sexism, economic justice and poverty, gays and lesbians in the Church, feminism, abortion, racism, and rural ministry is included. Also includes materials on retreats and conferences, some organized by the Resource Center, which focused on many of the issues above and other concerns, including gender and language, spirituality, medical care, housing and homelessness, women in ministry, and women in the workplace.

The Reproductive Rights National Network formed in 1978 in response to the nationwide abortion debate launched by Roe v. Wade. It eventually included about 50 feminist organizations and devoted itself to making reproductive choices available for all women. R2N2 campaigned for safe abortions; for the right of gay couples to adopt and raise children; and against the sterilization of poor or unfit mothers. It disbanded in 1984. Collection includes an International Planned Parenthood Federation report (Spring 1970); Reproductive Rights National Network newsletters and other coverage of the abortion debate; and administrative materials from the operations of the R2N2, including proposed platforms and policies, clippings and testimonials, and other miscellaneous notes and material. Subjects include abortion rights and protests; birth control; women's sterilization, particularly of Hispanic women; and gay and lesbian rights. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

William W. Renwick was an enslaver and cotton planter from Newberry and Union counties, S.C. Collection includes correspondence and other papers of Renwick, his wife, Rosannah Rogers Renwick, and related members of the Beard, Bothwell, Lyons, Renwick, and Rogers families, including material on South Carolina cotton planting, slavery, politics, social life, and customs; U.S. Representative James Rogers; and the Renwick and Rogers families.

Rosetta Reitz (1924-2008) was a business owner, stock broker, university lecturer, and writer on issues including food, feminism, women's health, and female jazz and blues musicians. She was also the founder and owner of Rosetta Records, a company most prominent in the 1980s that was dedicated to re-releasing historic recordings by female jazz and blues musicians. The Rosetta Reitz Papers address aspects of the entirety of Reitz's career, with the majority related to Rosetta Records and to Reitz's associated music research since the 1970s. The collection contains company documents, research notes, manuscripts, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photocopies, photographs, a variety of audio and moving image formats, as well as magazines and books.

The images in this collection were taken by photographer Ron Reis from the 1950s to 1979 and from 2004 to 2014. The earlier body of work (1962-1974) contains 289 black-and-white photographs, accompanied by negatives and contact sheets. The later body of work (2004-2014) contains 3,719 black-and-white and color laser inkjet prints, with a majority of images dated 2012 to 2013. Reis focused his camera on street scenes primarily in New York and New England, but also in Colorado and the midwest, in Europe (Italy, England, Ireland, and Greece), and in the Middle East. His images capture anti-war demonstrations, feminist and gay pride parades, and ethnic festivals, while also documenting the more quotidian life of urban neighborhoods, street markets, and other public spaces such as Speakers' Corner in London's Hyde Park and New York City's Washington Square. The earlier black-and-white gelatin silver prints measure 11x14 inches, while the laser inkjet prints measure 11x17 inches. There are also manuscript and printed materials such as a curriculum vitae, some correspondence, exhibition publicity, articles, and photo essays. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The Scrolls of Fire screen prints is a partial collection of the images created by Israeli painter and graphic artist Dan Reisinger (1934-2019) to illustrate verses by Israeli poet Abba Kovner. Reisinger's illustrations and Kovner's verses were published with parallel Hebrew and English text in 1981 as Megilot ha-esh [Scrolls of Fire: a nation fighting for its life: fifty-two chapters of Jewish martyrology].

Collection includes correspondence, grant proposals, teaching materials, and articles on and by Haim Reingold.

Lieutenant Enos Reeves served in the Pennsylvania Line during the Revolutionary War, and later worked as a silversmith in South Carolina. This collection consists of three volumes from an original set of journals he kept as letterbooks documenting his activities during his Continental Army service, between 1780 and 1782. Topics include troop reviews by George Washington, the treason of Benedict Arnold, the execution of Major John Andre, the Battle of King's Mountain, the seige of Yorktown, and troop movements, discipline, and encampments. Reeves describes a visit to the army camp by the Oneida and other Indigenous nations, including their leader Akiatonharónkwen (John Louis Cook, who Reeves describes as "Colonel Lewis"). Reeves' letterbooks also discuss his encounters with enslaved people and his opinion that slavery was "a great sin" but that "it would be some what difficult to alter it at the present." Also present in the journals are his accounts of his entertainments, flirtations with various women, dinners with officers, and social engagements, including a "genteel country dance" where the men dressed and danced in women's clothes.

Albert Rees (1921-1992) was a former professor of economics at Princeton University and economic advisor to President Gerald Ford. This collection documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, and teaching. It forms part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Collection pertains to Reed's political and community activism, the civil rights movement, and race and labor relations issues in the South. Consists of the records of the Durham, N.C. organization founded by Reed, Trumpet of Conscience, and a run of the newsletter of the same name, 1987-2000. Other papers include correspondence, chiefly to Reed; photographs; obituaries, interviews, speeches, and new articles by and about Sam Reed; fliers, invitations, and other items stemming from community events; and awards. Topics covered or touched on by these materials include the history of race relations in Durham, N.C.; Durham politics; activism in North Carolina and Durham; the involvement of Duke University and North Carolina Central students, faculty, and administration in local events; labor issues and unions; and, more generally, human rights issues in the South. Radiologist who served in the U.S. American Expeditionary Forces Medical Corps during World War I; originally from Newburgh, Orange County, New York. Collection contains a few pieces of correspondence, telegrams, military orders, booklets, photographs and negatives, and ephemera collected by Captain Charles Bailey Reed during his service with the U.S. Medical Reserve Corps in France, 1918-1919. The items are mounted in two French-made scrapbooks or housed in loose groups. Materials relate to Reed's time as a medical radiologist at Evacuation Hospital Number One, Sebastopol Barracks, Toul, France. Hundreds of photographs, both loose and mounted, were taken by Reed in the U.S., 1914, 1918, 1924, and in Paris, 1918-1919, and in the Evacuation Hospital camp, 1918-1919. Commercially published photographs depict battle scenes and damage in France. Other items include newspapers reports of the Armistice; images from the Paris Inter-Allied Games, summer 1919; printed items produced for American soldiers stationed in France; and Reed's identity card. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Forty-one manuscript letters from Charles Bailey Reed to his mother (Delia B. Reed), his father (Dr. William Reed), his sister and his grandparents (Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Bailey). Most of the letters are written during his Medical Corps tour of duty in France, 1918-1919. There is also a typed transcript of a poem, "The doings over there," by Kent Thurber.

Union soldier in the 102nd Regiment Infantry, U.S. Colored Troops. Collection consists of 21 personal letters of Alonzo Reed written while stationed in South Carolina during the latter part of the Civil War. Reed seems to have written some of the letters himself, while others were written for him by friends; all are addressed to his mother. He seems to have been in a camp in Detroit, Michigan, then was stationed in Hilton Head, S.C. in the summer of 1864; he remained there until 1865, when he was sent to Charleston, S.C., and then to Savannah, Georgia, and back to eastern S.C. for the duration. The letters indicate that Reed's regiment was often on picket duty, but also provide some descriptions of warfare and the ransacking of plantations. Reed, who was nearly illiterate, provides brief insights into daily camp life in terms of references of illnesses, hunger, not being paid for many months, and life as a soldier in the midst of war. Reed occasionally refers to the reception they received from both whites and blacks in the South. He also writes about fixing railroad supply lines and utilizing surrendered Confederate soldiers to aid in this work. In November 1864, he inquires as to whether African American men are being allowed to vote in the North and indicates that they are in the South. Arranged in chronological order.

Edward Parker Read (1868?-1944) was a Black pharmacist, jurist, entrepreneur and activist based in the Philadelphia area. Collection includes flyers, mailers, postcards, pamphlets and broadsides that advertise a range of products and services provided by Edward Reads's several business entities: patent medicines; herbal remedies; mineral-spring tonics; sanitarium facilities; palm readings; perpetual calendars; and ready-reference encyclopedias. Company and product names reflect contemporary interests in health spas, folk medicine; spiritualism; and Native American imagery. Materials also reflect an interest in economic development and social networking within the Black community. R.C. Maxwell Company of Trenton, N.J., was one of the earliest enduring outdoor advertising companies, founded in 1894 by Robert Chester Maxwell (1873-1955) and continued to operate primarily in the New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania area until the company was sold in 2000. The R.C. Maxwell Company Records span the years 1891-2001 and include photographs and negatives, videocassettes, ledgers and account books, scrapbooks, correspondence and legal papers relating to the company's operations in outdoor advertising. Photographs and negatives in several formats (film, glass negatives, polaroid prints) document billboard designs for a variety of advertisers as well as depicting billboard and electric sign structures and their location relative to the surrounding environment. Urban locations include Times Square in New York and the Atlantic City, N.J., Boardwalk, where a number of photographs also document the Miss America beauty pageant parade and other parades in which the R.C. Maxwell Company participated. A few photographs document billboard construction and erection; there are also photographs of the Maxwell family and of Maxwell company staff and employees. Scrapbooks contain images of billboards and wall paintings produced by the Maxwell company as well as by David L. Clark, a High Point, N.C. artist and sign painter who was R.C. Maxwell's guardian. Other scrapbooks document primarily Coca-Cola signs of the early 20th century, as well as World War I support efforts including the U.S. Food Administration (under the direction of Herbert Hoover), the U.S. Fuel Administration, and Liberty Bond campaigns. Companies represented in the collection include the Boardwalk Advertising Signs Co., C&B Electric Signs Co., Trenton Advertising Co., and Trenton Poster Advertising Co. Calla Raynor began her career at Duke in the Physical Education department in 1962 and served as the women's varsity tennis coach from 1967 to 1973. Raynor was instrumental in co-founding Duke University's women's basketball program. This collection contains correspondence, teaching materials, materials related to Ms. Raynor's education at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro), UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke University. The collection also includes sporting event materials, student athlete records, tournament materials, newspaper clippings, audiovisual materials, collegiate sports institutions and organizations for women, and other records from Raynor's career at Duke.

Henry E. Rauch was an accountant, businessman, and executive who served on the Board of Trustees of Duke University. An executive and Chairman of the Board at Burlington Industries, he served on Duke's Board of Trustees from 1964-1974. He largely was responsible for the Trustee response to the Duke Vigil in 1968 and closely involved with the expansion of the Duke Medical Center from 1970-1978. The Henry E. Rauch papers include materials related to Henry Rauch's time as a member of the Duke University Board of Trustees, some autobiographical notes on Henry Rauch's personal and professional life, and excerpts from Board of Trustee meeting minutes related to Henry Rauch. Much of the material related to Rauch's tenure in the Board of Trustees was gathered together as a scrapbook, and includes correspondence, clippings, photographs, reports, and typed notes on his particular role and involvement in events, such as the Duke Vigil and in the development of the Duke Medical Center.

Joel Raphaelson was an advertising executive with Ogilvy & Mather in New York and Chicago. The Joel Raphaelson papers include correspondence, speeches and presentations, writing drafts and other printed materials as well as audiovisual materials in multiple formats (videocassettes, optical disks, audio reels). Topics include agency and account management, management philosophy and strategic direction, and theories of writing for business and advertising copy.
